WRAP 19 & 20 AUGUST 2017 WRITTEN BY JAMES COMAN

QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 48

Tries: B Crisp 3, J Simbiken 2, B Cronan, M Connolly, A Gorrell; Goals: B Crisp 8

D QUEANBEYAN BLUES 24

Tries: J Wheeler 2, G Stewart 2, T Ruediger; Goals: T Campese 2) A hat-trick from the returning Brent Crisp has helped the Queanbeyan Kangaroos defeat their cross-town rivals, the Queanbeyan Blues, 48-24 and book a grand final berth.

However, Jedidiah Simbiken halted the Blues’ comeback with a try in the right corner before Bryan Cronan put the final nail in the Blues’ coffin when he latched onto a Josh Essex grubber.

The McIntyre Medalist, showed his class from the opening moments in the match as he gave the Kangaroos an early lead.

Thomas Ruediger added four points for the Blues when he was first to react from Francis Fainifo’s tap back from a high ball, but Crisp once again stole the show as he leapt highest to reel in a towering kick from Essex.

Captain-coach Aaron Gorrell celebrated his 100th game with a try from dummy half before Crisp grabbed his second thanks to a Josh Essex intercept. Jedidiah Simbiken added more points to the scoreboard when he ran 70 meters from a kick return to score before Mitchell Connolly gathered a Bryan Cronan no look pass to give the Roos a 30-0 lead within the opening 30 minutes. The Queanbeyan Blues hit back as George Stewart – filling in for the injured Brendon Taueki – scored on either side of halftime while fullback, Jake Wheeler leapt above the Kangaroos defence to ground the ball over the line.

Wheeler did well to grab his second try of the afternoon, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Blues from slumping to a 48-24 defeat – their third straight loss. The Blues will now face the Yass Magpies in next weekend’s preliminary final.

YASS MAGPIES 32

Tries: J Vatikani 2, S Davis, J Collins, J Smith, S Aiolupo; Goals: S Davis 4

D TUGGERAONG BUSHRANGERS 18

Tries: J Papalii, A Tupou, I Afemui; Goals: J Mitchell 3 Yass’ dream season has continued as the Magpies defeated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers 32-18 in their elimination final at Raiders Belconnen on Sunday afternoon. Tuggeranong started brightly as they muscled their way up field to score when Atu Tupou popped up a perfect offload for his front row partner, John Papalii, who barged his way over the line. Yass hit back shortly afterwards when Shaun Davis finished off a remarkable passage of play. With no obvious attacking threat, Scott Naughton kicked the ball into the path of Yass winger Jesse Collins. Instead of attempting to pick up the ball, Collins kicked the ball back in field and Davis grounded the ball for a try. Collins added a second try as he sprinted down the touchline while Saipani Aiolupo barged over from short range to score before Junior Vatikani scored from dummy-half just before the break. Tuggeranong stormed back into contention after halftime as Isileli Afemui crossed the line before Atu Tupou bulldozed his way over the line to bring margin to only two points.

However, Yass’ nerves were calmed when a cutout pass was deflected by Tuggeranong and gathered by Jai Smith. The Magpies winger, darted towards the line to score out wide to give Yass a 24-18 lead. The Yass fans were brought to their feet 15 minutes from fulltime when Junior Vatikani busted his way through the Tuggeranong line to score a brilliant 80 meter try. Shaun Davis wrapped up the result in the last five minutes when the second rower slotted a penalty from right in front of the posts.

MAGPIES DOWN DRAGONS IN THRILLER A last second Gabbie Suckling try has seen the Yass Magpies claim a memorable 12-10 win over the Valley Dragons to progress through to the preliminary final.

Having gone behind in a match for the first time this season, the Queanbeyan Blues rallied and constantly targeted the edges of Goulburn’s defence.

“The line was right there,” said Suckling. “I saw the biggest gap and thought, I have to score this!”

“It was just something that worked and we adapted,” Meakes said. “They have big forwards as well, so they were sticking it to our forwards.

Having gone behind early in the match through tries to Nirvana Ngan-Woo and Dorothy Carroll, the Magpies dug deep to fight their way back into the game.

“Once we started scoring a few on the outside edges, we kept doing it.”

However, after levelling the scores at 8-8 apiece thanks to a Hollie Massey try and a penalty, the Dragons took the lead once more through a penalty of their own. Determined to keep their season alive, the Magpies fought their way back for the second time in the match with Suckling latching onto a grubber kick and sending the crowd into raptures. “I knew we were going to stick it to them all the way,” Suckling said. “I knew we had it in us. “So many times I thought we were going to score but Valley Dragons held us up the whole time. I put it to our team, we got the quick play the balls, we got down there and we beat them down in their own half.” Yass will take on the Goulburn Stockmen in next week’s preliminary final after the Stockmen lost to the Queanbeyan Blues 34-10 with Yasmin Meakes and Shaenice Allan scored four and three tries respectively.

The win sees the Blues book their place on grand final day which takes place in a fortnight’s time. “It’s really exciting considering it’s the first women’s rugby league competition in Canberra,” Meakes said. “That’s really exciting to be a part of.”

MATCH PREVIEW 26 & 27 AUGUST 2017 AUSTBROKERS CANBERRA RAIDERS CUP QUEANBEYAN BLUES V YASS MAGPIES SUNDAY 3PM AT SEIFFERT OVAL The Queanbeyan Blues will be out to make amends for their defeat last week and keep their dominant season alive when they come up against the Yass Magpies on Sunday. The Blues enjoyed a successful season which only saw two defeats all year, but they were a shadow of their former selves when they fell to the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 48-24 last week. A form slump of three consecutive losses comes at the worst time possible for the Blues as Yass are hitting their straps. Having dominated the Tuggeranong Bushrangers last weekend, the Magpies are currently on a three match winning streak which includes a 4822 smashing of the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs.

After finishing in third spot on the ladder, Yass are capable of upsetting the competition and knocking the Blues out early. Blues assistant coach Adam Monahan is well aware of how dangerous Yass can be but is confident his team has the ability to find the form which secured them the minor premiership. “They’ve got good middle boys, good props and their centres are probably two of the best centres in the competition,’’ said Monahan. “We have to match them in the middle and hopefully we can get them in the backs.” With the winner advancing into the Grand Final to play the Queanbeyan Kangaroos both teams have everything to play for.

GEORGE TOOKE SHIELD BOOROWA ROVERS V NORTH CANBERRA BEARS SATURDAY 2.45PM BOOROWA SHOWGROUND The Boorowa Rovers will be looking to keep their season alive with a win over rivals the North Canberra Bears. After beating the Bears 24-12 just two weeks ago, Boorowa will be out to book a spot in the preliminary final and finish off a stunning turnaround after finishing on the bottom of the ladder last season.

However, the Bears won’t go down without a fight and are looking strong after they sailed past the Binalong Brahmans 26-12 in last week’s elimination final. With the winner securing a spot in the Grand Final qualifier, both teams have plenty to play for and will be doing everything they can to get in front.

GEORGE TOOKE SHIELD CROOKWELL GREEN DEVILS V HARDEN HAWKS SUNDAY 2.45 AT CROOKWELL MEMORIAL OVAL The Crookwell Green Devils are aiming to continue their season of dominance but first need to get past the Harden Hawks.

the Devils are hot favourites to take out the competition, but Harden has hit form at the perfect time of the year.

With the winner advancing straight into the Grand Final both sides will be fired up ahead of this top of the table clash.

No team has scored more than 16 points against the Hawks since round 10 while Harden has scored over 40 points in their past four games.

After finishing the season with just one loss,

KATRINA FANNING SHIELD GOULBURN V YASS MAGPIES 2.10PM AT SEIFFERT OVAL Goulburn will be hoping to repeat their previous performance against Yass as they play for a spot in the grand final.

But Goulburn coach John Thomas in confident in his talented team and is expecting the match to go down to the wire.

After beating Yass 40-22 in their last meeting, Goulburn are full of confidence coming into the match but aren’t underestimating their opponent.

“It will be a very close game that’ll go all the way,” said Thomas. “We know we can compete with them our forwards have been playing well.”

Yass finished the season with two big wins and brought that form with them into the finals when they came from behind to beat the Valley Dragons 12-10 last week.
