1ST GRADE MATCH REPORT BLUES RETURN TO FORM IN EMPHATIC FASHION The Queanbeyan Blues have ensured the grand final will be an all Queanbeyan affair after they beat the Yass Magpies 30-0 at Seiffert Oval on Sunday afternoon. Having suffered three consecutive losses, Blues captaincoach Terry Campese was pleased that his side managed to return to winning ways to secure a grand final berth. “Obviously you want to be in the big game at the end of the year,” Campese said. “We took the hard way, we lost three in a row and it was a pretty poor performance from us last week. “Westies and then Tuggeranong the week after that embarrassed us as well. I didn’t know what to do, obviously it’s the first time I’ve been in this position, I had a lot of questions and a lot of sleepless nights.” The Blues didn’t let their leader down either and raced to a 12-0 lead inside the opening ten minutes when Michael Cullen latched onto good passes from Campese to cross the try line twice. Yass fought their way back into the match but were unable to convert their effort into points before a Campese penalty made the score 14-0. Blues prop Aaron McInnes added another try to the tally when he barraged his way over the line before he had to limp off the field with a lower leg injury in the second half. Stunned from the first half, Yass fought their way back into the grind before Campese once again broke the deadlock with a chip for Thomas Ruediger before a try from Brendon Taueki on his return from injury made the score 30-0. The loss sees Yass denied a chance to replicate their feats from 2006, while the Blues will attempt to win their third premiership in four seasons next Sunday.

KATRINA FANNING SHIELD MATCH REPORT GOULBURN THROUGH TO GRAND FINAL The Goulburn Stockmen are through the inaugural Katrina Fanning Shield grand final after defeating the Yass Magpies 18‑10 in icy conditions at Seiffert Oval. “It feels really good,” said Goulburn hooker Jennaya Ottaway. “It was a heaps good effort by all the girls today, especially in this weather.” The Stockmen got off to a quick start through five-eighth Pearl Rakete before Ottaway doubled the score when she crossed from dummy-half. Gabbie Suckling ensured that Yass remained within striking distance when the five-eighth ran straight though Goulburn’s defence. Nicole Parspane dropped a chance for the Magpies as the rain continued to bucket down, but she made up for it shortly afterwards to bring Yass within two points of Goulburn. Ottaway once again managed to get her name on the score sheet with a scoot from dummyhalf but Yass continued to threaten the Goulburn defence. Tayla-Jayne Chapman managed to go over the line for Yass but the ball slipped out of her grasp in the process while Suckling latched onto a grubber but was adjudged to be offside. Hollie Deaton was prevented a late try by some brilliant Yass defence but it wasn’t enough to stop Goulburn from progressing through to next weekend’s grand final. Goulburn coach John Thomas said he was pleased to see his side through to the inaugural grand final and believes his side can compete with the undefeated Blues. “We can match them,” Thomas said. “In both games (against the Blues this season), we’ve been more than competitive. “I reckon with the confidence we have now, we’ll be spot on.”

PREMIERS CHALLENGE ANNOUNCEMENT INAUGURAL PREMIERS CHALLENGE The buildup for the inaugural Katrina Fanning Shield grand final has increased with the winner of Sunday’s match qualifying to play in the first edition of the annual Premiers Challenge. The Premiers Challenge will pit the premiers of the Katrina Fanning Shield against the premiers of the Illawarra league. CRRL General Manager, Mark Vergano, said the opportunity for women in the Canberra region was exciting. “It’s fantastic that we could team up with Illawarra to create a unique competition for women playing rugby league,” Vergano said. “It provides women in the Canberra region an opportunity to test themselves at a higher level.” The two sides hoping to represent CRRL in a fortnight’s time are the Queanbeyan Blues and Goulburn Stockmen. The Blues enter this weekend’s match as favourites, having remained undefeated throughout the season so far. However, the Stockmen have shown glimpses of their potential throughout the season, including giving the Blues an early scare in the major semi-final. The Premiers Challenge will take place at 10:15am, Sunday 10 September at WIN Stadium.

DUMAS SWAYED BY ROOS CULTURE When Luke Dumas found out his wife had to move down to Canberra for work, there was only one club the versatile back wanted to play for. “When I first came down, I’d heard a lot of stories about what sort of club to go to,” Dumas said. “All the guys said that with the Roos, the culture was quite good there. “I had a lot of family tell me to go to the Roos and I had a cousin that was here as well.” Helping Dumas pick his club was the fact he recognised a few familiar faces through his time plying his trade in the Queensland Cup for Tweed Heads. “I knew Josh Essex,” Dumas said. “I also knew Brent Crisp, I’d played against him a few times. I knew playing with him that it’s always going to be a good year with him, with his kicking game especially.” However, Dumas wasn’t sure as to whether or not the Kangaroos would be playing with their star playmaker in the grand final this Sunday against the Queanbeyan Blues. “I’m not sure what’s going on, I think it’s a bit of a secret,” Dumas said. “I don’t think he’ll miss it but we’ll see how it goes.” With Crisp having played at fullback at various times throughout the season, Dumas isn’t too worried if he needs to play at fullback or center this weekend.

RDR1899_CRRL Local Program_Final 3_V4.indd 14

“I’ve adapted to most positions,” Dumas said. “I think the only sort of tough thing is the fitness required going from center to fullback.” Regardless of whether Crisp plays or not, Dumas knows his side are in for a tough match against the Blues in this Sunday’s grand final. “It’s about those first 20 minutes,” Dumas said. “If we don’t come out firing, they’re going to give it to us like they did in that first time we played them this year. We came out quite slow and the Blues put 30 points on us straight away. “We’ve got to come out firing and be on our game pretty much straight away.” Although the Blues won the two matches between the two sides during the regular season, the Kangaroos blitzed their crosstown rivals with a 48-24 victory a fortnight ago. Despite the heavy win in the last outing, Dumas knows that the Kangaroos are in for a tough match as they chase the club’s sixth premiership. “It’s going to be a close game that’s for sure,” Dumas said. “The way the Blues played against Yass (in the preliminary final), I think they’ll take that advantage and bring it into the final.”

FROM ROUND BALL TO WRECKING BALL Three years ago Jake Stein was putting on his football boots to play soccer. Now the former left back is preparing to line up for the Queanbeyan Blues as they attempt to win their third premiership in four years. Despite having grown up playing the round ball game, Stein’s transition to playing rugby league was expected due to his passion for the game. “When I was 19 I gave up on soccer, it just wasn’t my thing,” Stein said. “Then I thought I’d give footy a crack and I’ve loved it ever since.” During his first two seasons at the Blues, Stein played on the wing and found himself motivated by matching the feats of his dad who also played in the backline. “My old man used to play rugby league when I was a kid. Once I put on a bit of weight, I wanted to do a bit better than him to show him up,” Stein laughed. Shortly after making his first grade debut, Stein was in for a shock when he was told he was moving off the wing to prop. Not that it fazed him. “Well, I’ve always liked contact,” Stein said. “So it was just more contact so I enjoyed it.” Overseeing Stein’s rise to first grade has been Queanbeyan Blues assistant coach, Adam Lenihan.

“It wasn’t through lack of trying or lack of application, it was just getting used to playing in the middle through first grade.” After that performance, Stein continued his education as a prop through reserve grade before getting a recall just before the finals series. In his return, Stein has managed to increase his input for the Blues having managed to earn a starting berth and while doubling his minutes. “His mobility is one of the reasons he’s there,” Lenihan said. “If you take a look at our boys like Day, Rutland, McInnes and Ngata, they’re big, big boys. “They’re not as agile as Kyle [O’Donnell] and Jake are. They give us a point of difference and that’s one of the good things about Jake, he’s a little bit more mobile…his line speed and retreat speed is better than those real big boys.” Having made his first appearance as a prop against the Kangaroos, Stein will be looking to continue his progression against the same team this weekend. Whatever the result in this weekend’s grand final, Stein has certainly found his calling. “I just love my footy,” Stein said. “I couldn’t go back to soccer now.”

“The first time he played in the middle was against the Kangaroos at Freebody Oval,” Lenihan said. “He went absolutely flat out for about eight minutes and then he was absolutely gone.
