WRAP 15 & 16 JULY 2017 QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 60 D GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 6
Tries: A Greenwood, T Moa, R Fulivai 2, R McQueen 2; Goals: R Roberts 3 Tries: C Hart; Goals: B Hewitt
The Goulburn Workers Bulldogs’ finals hopes were dealt a blow as they suffered a 60-6 loss at the hands of the Queanbeyan Kangaroos at Seears Workwear Oval on Saturday afternoon.
However, the second half was a different story and with Tyler Cornish not returning to the field for Goulburn after halftime, Queanbeyan ran rampant.
Having suffered consecutive losses against the Tuggeranong Bushrangers and the Queanbeyan Blues, Goulburn needed an upset win but a Brent Crisp masterclass blew the Bulldogs away.
A hat-trick from Brent Crisp turned the tide firmly in Queanbeyan’s favour, with his third try a magnificent length of the field run.
Starved of possession in the first half, the Roos made their limited opportunities count as they took a 16-6 lead into halftime.
As the game wore on, the Kangaroos continued to pile on the points as Troy Whiley scored the final try to give the Kangaroos a 60-6 win.
YASS MAGPIES 24 D TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 22 Tries: Steve Naughton 2, J Vatikani, M Smith; Goals: S Davis 4 Scorers not provided
The Yass Magpies returned to winning ways with a vital 24-22 win over the fourth placed Tuggeranong Bushrangers.
Two tries to Isileli Afemui started Tuggeranong’s comeback but it wasn’t enough as the Bushrangers fell short by two points.
With only two points separating the two sides heading into the round, Yass raced out to a 24-8 halftime lead with Steve Naughton adding two tries.
The win sees the Magpies solidify third place as Tuggeranong slip out of the finals positions.
However, the Bushrangers returned galvanised after the break and threatened to defeat Yass for the second time this season.
WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 30 D WODEN VALLEY RAMS 16
Tries: A Greenwood, T Moa, R Fulivai 2, R McQueen 2; Goals: R Roberts 3
Tries: J Hickson, J Taws, J Morgan; Goals: C Johnson 2 The West Belconnen Warriors have moved into the top four with a 30-16 win over the Woden Valley Rams. Warriors captain Ryan McQueen continued his impressive form as he scored two tries in his return to fullback, while Ricky Fulivai also chimed in with two tries of his own.
The result sees Woden’s finals chances all but disappear as the loss sees them drop four points out of the finals positions with only four rounds remaining.
Woden managed tries thanks to stand in captain Jeff Morgan as well as Jack Hickson and Jesse Taws but ultimately it wasn’t enough to defeat the reigning premiers.
GUNGAHLIN BULLS 48
Tries: S Bramich, L Hall 2, R O’Sullivan, B Scholes, T Sherd, J Smith-Shields 3; Goals: C Smith 3, D Williams 2, L Withers
BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS 24
Tries: M Butz, K Jobson, J Mecham-Crane, S Tupuola, A Johnson; Goals: D Eason 2 The Gungahlin Bulls have managed to claim their first win in four matches as they defeated the Belconnen United Sharks. A hat-trick to second rower Jese Smith-Shield helped the Bulls on their way as they scored nine tries at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval. The Sharks managed five tries of their own as they managed to produce their equal second best attacking performance of the year but it
wasn’t enough to stop the Bulls from claiming their second win over the Sharks this year. The win sees the Bulls move to ten competition points, only two points behind Goulburn and Woden.
OWT MATCH REPORT: BUFFALOES CLAIM SECOND WIN A Nora Lal hattrick has helped the Tuggeranong Buffaloes defeat the Queanbeyan Kangaroos 40-6 on Sunday afternoon at Northbourne Oval. Tuggeranong rake Amanda Kyburz said although the team performed well, there is still room for improvement. “It’s just given us experience for what we’ve been working on in training,” Kyburz said. “We’ve been doing new sets and to be able to bring them out in the field has been a really good improvement but it’s something we still need to work further on for our future games.” Despite fielding only twelve players due to a mounting injury toll at the club, the Kangaroos fought valiantly in the first half before running out of steam. Lal gave the Buffaloes the lead after she crashed over the line early in the first half before running 50 meters to score her second of the match. The Roos had a sniff from the restart when a Buffaloes error gave them prime field position and Emily Johnstone took advantage as she steamrolled over the last defender to score. However, from that moment it was all Tuggeranong as Jessica Stanley scored with a simple run from first receiver before Lal broke through the line to produce another stunning 50 metre try to give Tuggeranong a 24-6 halftime lead.
Tuggeranong captain, Karen Lyons, continued Tuggeranong’s try scoring with a double after the break with her second try a try a length of the field effort after intercepting a stray Kangaroos pass. Tiana Collins put the icing on the cake late in the game with Tuggeranong’s seventh try, and Amanda Kyburz made no mistake with the conversion as she kicked her sixth goal. The win sees Tuggeranong move two points clear of the Kangaroos at the foot of the table with four games remaining in the regular season.
RACE TO THE FINALS: GEORGE TOOKE SHIELD WITH ONLY FOUR ROUNDS REMAINING OF THE REGULAR, WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE RACE FOR THE FINALS IN THE GEORGE TOOKE SHIELD. LADIES LEAGUE TAG The finals race appears to be sorted for the ladies as fifth placed Boorowa hold a six-point lead over Gunning and Binalong with only four matches remaining in the regular season.
With only two points separating Boomanulla and Crookwell, both sides will be hoping to secure third place to give themselves a second chance in this year’s finals series.
Bungendore currently hold a two-point lead, as the undefeated side hope to wrap up the minor premiership with their remaining fixtures but Boorowa and Crookwell will be doing their best to spoil the party.
Meanwhile, fifth placed Boorowa only need two more wins to mathematically secure their place in the finals should Gunning (sixth) and Binalong (seventh) win their remaining fixture.
If Bungendore manage to claim the minor premiership, they will enjoy a week off in the first week of finals. Harden and Boomanulla currently sit in second and third respectively with Crookwell right on their tails.
However, with three of Boorowa’s last four matches coming against the bottom three sides, only a major upset will prevent them from playing finals football.
MEN’S Crookwell appear to be well on track to secure this year’s minor premiership as they currently sit three points clear of both Harden and Boorowa on 24 points. Harden and Boorowa are currently locked on 21 points and look destined to play each other in the first week of finals as they hold a three point lead over the fourth placed Bears.
both Boorowa and Harden so far this season, the Bears won’t be fearing any of the teams around them. With the sixth placed Bungendore Tigers only one point outside the top five, North Canberra and fifth placed Binalong are no certainties to play finals football.
Last year’s runners up, Harden, have only suffered two losses this season while Boorowa haven’t suffered a loss since round three.
However, the Tigers will have to navigate their way through one of the hardest set of fixtures possible [Boorowa (A), Crookwell (H) and (North Canberra (A)] if they are to make the top five.
Defending premier’s, North Canberra, currently sit in fourth place and could cause the other finalists plenty of headaches. Having beaten
The UC Grizzlies remain a slim chance of making the finals but are four points adrift of Binalong with a worse for and against.

MATCH PREVIEW 22 & 23 JULY 2017 BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS VS WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 2PM SATURDAY AT O’CONNER OVAL In the battle of Belconnen both the Sharks and the Warriors will want to leave with the bragging rights when they face off in a local derby this weekend. The Warriors need a win to stay in touch with the top four while the Sharks are playing for pride as they sit on the bottom of the ladder. The Warriors are coming off a strong win over Woden last week and will be full of confidence when they take on their cross town
rivals. But Sharks halfback Darcy Eason says his team knows where they are going wrong and hoping to put together a complete performance. “We need to tighten up our middle and our right edge defensively,” Eason said. “We know we can score points if we hold the ball, we just need to focus our energy into defence.”
YASS MAGPIES VS QUEANBEYAN BLUES 2PM SATURDAY AT WALKER PARK After a tense finish to their tight two point win last week, Yass will be out to knock off competition leaders the Queanbeyan Blues and move further inside the top four. After just edging out the Tuggeranong Bushrangers last week 24-22, the Magpies have another tough challenge in front of them coming up against an undefeated Queanbeyan Blues side. The Blues had the luxury of the bye last week and will be
well-rested and ready to go coming up against a Yass side full of spirit. Yass Magpies captain and halfback Steve Naughton is confident in his team but knows just how tough the Blues will be. “We’ve got plenty belief in our own side,” Naughton said. “We need to put a full 80 minutes together if we are any chance to get a win over the Blues.”
WODEN VALLEY RAMS VS TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 3PM SUNDAY AT PHILLIP DISTRICT OVAL In the match of the round, the Woden Valley Rams take on bitter rivals the Tuggeranong Bushrangers in a local derby which is sure to entertain. With both teams sitting alongside each other on the ladder, a win for either team is as good as gold at this stage of the season. Currently sitting in 5th place, Tuggeranong are coming off a tight defeat last week going down by just two points despite a spirited second half comeback. Michael Uluakiola has been a driving force behind Tuggeranong this year leading from the front with his tough carries. But Uluakiola knows his team isn’t perfect and they will need to play well this weekend if they are to come away with the win. “We just need to work on playing 80 minutes and start and finish good,” Uluakiola said. “When we put our minds to something we can come out with the goods.”
Woden sits just below the Bushrangers in 6th position making a win even more important. After a tough defeat at the hands of West Belconnen 30-16, Woden will have a point to prove when the local derby gets underway Former Tuggeranong player Jeff Morgan has switched sides and will line up for Woden in this weekend’s clash. Having played for both teams, Morgan knows how physical the game will be and how important a win against Tuggeranong this weekend is. “It’s always a good game against bushys,” Morgan said. “For me it means a heap [Local Derby], I’ve played on both sides and you just wanna get out there and rip in.” “We did it pretty tough last week, but we are close to full squad this week and hopefully we can go out there and bet them convincingly.
GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS VS GUNGAHLIN BULLS 2PM SATURDAY AT WORKERS ARENA Despite a severe lack of troops, the Gungahlin Bulls showed that they are still a force in the competition after they beat the Sharks last week. With just seven players available for training this week, the Bulls are severely down on numbers but know they have it in them to still come away with a win this weekend. The potential return of former Raider Drury low is a massive boost for the Gungahlin side that need a win if they are any chance of making the finals. Standing in their way is an imposing Goulbourn
pack which will be out to make amends for their poor performance last week going down 60-6 against the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. Gungahlin Coach David Howell, knows how hard it can be travel down to Goulburn but is confident in his teams determination and attitude. “It’s going to be a big ask going to Goulburn on Sunday,” Howell said. “Hopefully we can dig deep and put in a big effort and get the win.”
