GEORGE TOOKE SHIELD
WRAP 22 & 23 JULY 2017 WODEN VALLEY RAMS 24 TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 24 (Tries: M Gilmour 2, R Leapai, D Prior; J Carroll 3) drew
(Tries: T Vatubuli, I Afemui, A Tupou, D Ewings; Goals: J Mitchell 4) Tuggeranong’s run towards the finals hit a Michael Gilmour scored his second try shortly minor speedbump on Sunday afternoon, as afterwards, but a fantastic right foot step from the Woden Valley Rams fought back from 18-6 Isileli Afemui meant the Bushrangers hit back down to earn a 24 all draw. straight away. An easy afternoon appeared to be on the cards for the Bushrangers as Timoci Vatubuli opened the scoring with a soft try from dummy half. Dayne Ewings crashed over the line shortly afterwards, but Woden hit back thanks to Michael Gilmour who busted through Tuggeranong’s defensive line to score. However, poor ball security and a lack of fifth tackle options prevented Woden from building any momentum and Tuggeranong made them pay as Atu Tupou scored to give Tuggeranong a 12 point lead at halftime. Woden ran onto the field with a more purpose in the second half, and Ron Leapai swung the momentum firmly in the Ram’s favour with a 50 meter tackle busting try.
The Tuggeranong centre gathered a cut-out ball from Blake Hansen and produced an excellent right foot step to carve his way through Woden’s defence. However, Hansen dropped the ball from the kickoff and the Rams capitalised on the mistake when Brad Prior latched onto a Charlie Hallam grubber kick to close the gap to two points. A serious looking knee injury forced Prior from the field shortly afterwards, but Woden managed to dig deep and were rewarded when Jayden Carroll kicked a penalty from 30 meters out to level the scores.
WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 60
(Tries: C Brebner 2, R McQueen 3, R Thomas 3, R Fulivai, R Roberts, C Thorley; Goals: R Roberts 8)
D BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS 0 The West Belconnen Warriors have continued their recent good form with a thumping 60-0 win over local rivals Belconnen United Sharks. Having lost to the Sharks earlier in the season while key players were missing due to the Country Championships, the defending premiers were a class above the lacklustre Sharks.
Captain Ryan McQueen and centre Ryley Thomas were both missing in the corresponding fixture early in the season and they both proved their value to the Warriors with both players scoring hattricks. The win sees the Warriors move two points above the Bushrangers before their crucial clash next weekend.
QUEANBEYAN BLUES 52 D YASS MAGPIES 6
(Tries: J Ulrick 2, B Nicoll 3, T Ruediger, M Cullen, B Spears 2; Goals: T Campese 6, B Taueki 2) (Tries: J Vatikani, Goals: S Davis) The top of the table Queanbeyan Blues brushed aside the third placed Yass Magpies 52-6 on Saturday afternoon. Queanbeyan Blues halfback Ben Nicoll scored three tries in just his seventh appearance this season, while James Ulrick and Brendon Spears both scored doubles.
The win sees the Blues secure another two competition points as they remain on track to finish the regular season undefeated. The loss sees the Yass Magpies remain in the third place but only one point ahead of the fourth placed Warriors.
GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 48
(Tries: C Hart 2, N Cornish 2, M Worboys 2, P Cooke, M Dodson; Goals: Blake Hewitt 7, Brad Hewitt)
D GUNGAHLIN BULLS 22
(Tries: R McGinn 2, R O’Sullivan, K Madden; Goals: S Keita Opo 3) The Goulburn Workers Bulldogs returned to Ross McGinn scored two tries for the Bulls winning ways with a 48-22 win over the injury while Kye Madden scored his third try in as depleted Gungahlin Bulls. many matches. Having lost their previous three matches, doubles to Chris Hart, Nicholas Cornish and Matthew Worboys helped the Bulldogs to a 26 point win.
The win sees Goulburn move ahead of the Bulls and into seventh place with three matches remaining.
CRRL HONOUR KATRINA FANNING
Canberra Region Rugby League is proud to announce the renaming of the Open Women’s Tackle competition to the Katrina Fanning Shield in honour of the former Jillaroo. Over the course of a 14 year playing career, Fanning played in the inaugural Jillaroos test in 1995 and was captain-coach of the Gungahlin Bulls as they won three premierships in the previous Canberra women’s competition. In total, Fanning made 24 appearances for Australia and also captained NSW and Country NSW. Since retiring from playing, Fanning has maintained a high involvement in rugby league, having served as president of Australian Women’s Rugby League as well as Canberra Women’s Rugby League. In addition to this, she also established the first ever indigenous women’s rugby league tournament.
In addition to this Katrina has heavily contributed to the local community in her voluntary work for not for profit services focusing on homelessness and family violence. For her services to the Canberra community, Fanning was appointed Canberra Woman of the Year and ACT NAIDOC Person of the Year in 2014 before being awarded a Public Service Medal in the Queen’s Birthday Honours List for outstanding service to Indigenous Australians in 2015. Recently, Fanning was nominated for ACT Australian of the Year along with Ricky Stuart and Alan Tongue and was also elected to the ACT Aboriginal Advisory Board working with the ACT Government.
BINALONG FIGHTING MOTOR NEURON DISEASE WELCOME TO BINALONG. POPULATION 543. HOME OF THE BINALONG BRAHMANS AND THE HUB OF A TIGHT KNIT COMMUNITY RAISING MONEY FOR THE NSW MOTOR NEURON DISEASE ASSOCIATION. One year ago, Binalong Brahmans captaincoach Jason Brown felt the impact that MND can have when the girlfriend of his brother’s best mate died from the disease aged only 23 leaving behind her 12 month old child. “Timmy’s (Jason’s brother) been mates with them for a long time and it’s the same for myself,” Brown said. “Personally for me with young children, I would hate for my kids to be in that situation. “If we can contribute by raising some funds to try and stop the disease, that’s the ultimate goal.” Having seen the devastation that MND can have first hand, Brown spoke to Binalong President Ben Spencer about what the club could do to raise money for the foundation. When Brown raised his idea, he wasn’t
surprised to hear from Spencer that others within the Binalong community were affected by the disease, including the cousin of Binalong’s League Tag coach, Johnathan Pack. “Unfortunately, it’s a disease that doesn’t get much credit,” Brown said. “Quite a few families are suffering from it. It’s not real good, there’s a lady in Binalong who’s affected by it too.” Throughout the season, players from Binalong as well as their opposition in the George Tooke Shield have been donating money each home game towards the cause. Binalong’s fundraising efforts continue this weekend as Binalong will be wearing special MND jerseys as they host the Boomanulla Raiders before hosting an auction after the match at the Binalong Community Club to raise further funds.
Binalong President Ben Spencer was pleased by the efforts of the community in getting behind the cause. “We’re a really tight knit community,” Spencer said. “Whatever is happening in town, they get involved with. “Our aim this weekend is to raise as much money as we can.”

MATCH PREVIEW 29 & 30 JULY 2017 QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS VS YASS MAGPIES 3PM SATURDAY AT SEERS WORKWEAR OVAL Troy Whiley and Josh Ayers will be playing their 200th first grade game as the duo lineup for the Kangaroos on Saturday afternoon. The Kangaroos will be without top point scorer and goal kicker Brent Crisp, which has forced a re-shuffle of their squad on an important day for the club. But the Kangaroos currently sit comfortably in second position with a seven point gap over third placed Yass Magpies ahead of this week’s game. The Roos are coming off the back of the bye and will be well-rested and refreshed coming into the clash. However, the Magpies are still recovering from a heavy
52-6 thrashing at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues last week and will be looking to make amends against another Queanbeyan team this weekend. Despite the significant occassion, Whiley is modest about playing his 200th first grade game and is just focusing on coming away with the two points. “It’s a pretty big thing for me and I’m just worried for the boys and hope we can be there come September,” Whiley said. “Every game we play we want to and I dare say Yass will be coming out all guns blazing.”
QUEANBEYAN BLUES VS WODEN VALLEY RAMS 3PM SATURDAY AT SEIFFERT OVAL The Woden Valley Rams will need to be the team to topple the Blues for the first time this year if they are to keep their finals hopes alive Woden need to win all three of their finals games if they are to play finals football but they first have to beat the previously unbeaten Queanbeyan Blues The Queanbeyan Blues notched up their 13th straight victory after they
demolished the Yass Magpies 52-6 last week Captain coach Terry Campese is weary of Woden and knows they have a quality team and are capable of playing good footy. “It’s going to be a big game for them and they are going to come prepared and ready to go,” Campese said. “They play some great football and have a big pack and are very dangerous.”
BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS VS GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 3PM SATURDAY AT O’CONNER OVAL The Belconnen United Sharks are hoping their young team can step up and upset the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs this Saturday. The Sharks lost 60-0 last week at the hands of their cross town rivals West Belconnen, which is sure to fire the young team up ahead of their clash with the 6th placed Bulldogs. Things were different for the Bulldogs who beat the Gungahlin Bulls 48-22 in an important win which keeps them in touch with the top four.
Goulburn needs to win once again to keep their slim finals chance alive while the Sharks are playing for pride at this stage of the season. Sharks captain and hooker Jason Brown knows his young team is capable of competing against the Goulburn side. “They have a strong spine,” Brown said. “If we stop their forward pack and halves, that’s an area we should get them.”
WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS VS TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 3PM SUNDAY AT RAIDERS BELCONNEN Both West Belconnen and Tuggeranong are treating this clash as a grand final in what is sure to be an exciting matchup in our game of the round. Last year’s premiers West Belconnen currently sit in 4th position, but a win for the 5th placed Bushrangers would move them above Belconnen on the ladder. With just three games remaining and with both teams with tough matches yet to play, this match is a must win for both teams. West Belconnen will be full of confidence after they cruised past the Sharks in the battle of Belconnen last week winning 60-0. Warrior’s front rower Aidan Greenwood has been great for the Warriors this year and is expecting a tough hit out between the forwards.
“This week is our grand final,” Greenwood said. “In the middle they have a very tight, big forward pack, we need a bit more talk in defence and it’ll be a good game that’s for sure.” The Bushrangers are coming off a draining 24-all draw with Woden last week. The tied score line makes it the second time this year the Bushrangers have finished 80 minutes of football only to be awarded one point. But Bushrangers forward Wayne Bullock knows the importance of this week’s match and has full confidence in his team. “We are playing every week like it’s our grand final, we know if we lose one it’s going to get hard,” Bullock said. “There’s a lot of feeling against Tuggeranong, if we turn up and play well we can beat any team on the day.”
