WRAP 29 & 30 JULY 2017 TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS 34
Tries: J Papalii, D Ewings 2, M Uluakiola, Q Cannon, S Fetuani; Goals: J Mitchell, D Ewings 4
D WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS 18
Tries: C Thorley, H Brown, A Greenwood; Goals: R Roberts 3 The race for the top four took another twist on Sunday afternoon as the Tuggeranong Bushrangers defeated the West Belconnen Warriors 34-18. Entering the match two points behind the fourth placed Warriors, Tuggeranong knew they needed a win to keep their season alive. After the opening fifteen minutes of the match, it appeared that their season would be over as the Warriors scored two early tries thanks to Harry Brown and Chris Thorley. The Warriors caught the Tuggeranong defence off guard for the first try when Ryley Thomas decided to run the ball on the last play. The centre busted through the line out wide before passing the ball in field as Brown finished off the attack. However, Tuggeranong second rower Dayne Ewings scored two quick tries in similar fashion as he leapt above the Warriors defenders
to ground the ball from well placed kicks. Quinlyn Cannon gave the Bushrangers a two point lead before halftime as the utility crossed the line but an injury to captain Josh Mitchell in the lead up gave Tuggeranong plenty to think about at halftime. With the game in the balance, Tuggeranong seized the match by the scruff off the neck as Michael Uluakiola busted through four defenders to cross the line before John Papalii added four points of his own. Determined to consolidate their position in fourth place, the West Belconnen Warriors gave themselves a chance of salvaging the match when Harry Brown set up Aidan Greenwood to score but it wasn’t enough as Seteki Fetuani scored scored a spectacular Tuggeranong try.
GOULBURN WORKERS BULLDOGS 54
Tries: S Conlon, C Hart, Brad Hewitt, J Roberts, P Cooke 2, T Hazleton 2, D Stephens 2; Goals: Blake Hewitt 7
D BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS 4 Tries: M Kirk
The West Belconnen Warriors have continued their recent good form with a thumping 60-0 win over local rivals Belconnen United Sharks. Having lost to the Sharks earlier in the season while key players were missing due to the Country Championships, the defending premiers were a class above the lacklustre Sharks.
Captain Ryan McQueen and centre Ryley Thomas were both missing in the corresponding fixture early in the season and they both proved their value to the Warriors with both players scoring hattricks. The win sees the Warriors move two points above the Bushrangers before their crucial clash next weekend.
QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 36
Tries: J Simbiken 3, M Connolly, T Aroha-Tuinauvai, L Spaander, J Essex; Goals: J Essex 4
D YASS MAGPIES 28
Tries: Scott Naughton, Steve Naughton, J Vatikani, W Peace 2; Goals: S Davis The Queanbeyan Kangaroos celebrated the 200 game milestones of Josh Ayers and Troy Whiley with a win but it wasn’t straightforward as Yass threatened to spoil the party.
From that moment, the Kangaroos put their foot on the accelerator and broke the deadlock when a powerful run from Aroha-Tuinauvai was rewarded with a try.
Andrew Swaffield was the first to score as the fullback linked up with the Naughton brothers to create a gap in the Queanbeyan defence. However, the Kangaroos hit back through Mitch Connolly.
A tense finale ensued but as Yass tried desperately to win the match with a high kick towards the in goal, Jedidiah Simbiken collected the ball and ran the length of the field to confirm the win.
The two teams continued to trade tries and with twenty minutes to go, the scores were locked a 28 all.
QUEANBEYAN BLUES 20
Tries: B Spears, T Stevens, J Stuckey, M Cullen; Goals: T Campese 2
D WODEN VALLEY RAMS 14
Tries: C Jenksinson, T Hicks, J Hickson; Goals: J Carroll The Woden Valley Rams season is officially over after they succumbed to a narrow defeat at the hands of the Queanbeyan Blues. In a match where they were widely considered underdogs, the Rams more than held their own as they took the lead thanks to tries from Tom Hicks, Jack Hickson and debutant Curtly Jenkinson.
However, the Blues came back strongly and managed to secure the result through tries to Brendon Spears, Tyler Stevens, Josh Stuckey and Michael Cullen. The win sees the Blues remain undefeated with two final rounds of the regular season remaining.
KTS MATCH REPORT: BLUES OVERCOME DRAGONS
A dominant second half performance has helped the Queanbeyan Blues ease to a 36-0 victory over the third placed Valley Dragons on Friday night.
“We restarted and said that we aren’t playing our natural game,” said Meakes. “We needed to improve our ball security and just run straight and it made a big difference.”
A tense opening stanza saw both sides defend their line stoutly as they tried to not give each other an inch.
From that point on, the Blues broke the deadlock when Meakes broke through a three player tackle to score next to the corner post before Samantha Wood scored shortly afterwoods to give the Blues a 10-0 halftime lead.
“They really stuck it to us,” said Queanbeyan try scorer, Yasmin Meakes. “That first fifteen minutes was really brutal.” It looked like the Blues would break the deadlock when they created an overlap but Nirvana NganWoo bundled the winger into touch just as it appeared she was going to score. However, a serious looking knee injury to Nirada Phonsaya and a knock to Samantha Bodle shortly afterwards halted the Dragons’ momentum as the Blues took the stoppages as a chance to regather themselves.
The second half belonged to Queanbeyan as Paris Robinson scored the first of her two tries in the first set after the restart. Meakes set up Cailah Welch for the first of her two tries not long afterwards with a wonderful offload while Emma White also managed a try. An injury to Ahlivia Ingram didn’t help the Dragons cause as they were reduced to 12 players before Chloe Smith was sent to the bin alongside Queanbeyan’s Taylor Thorpe as frustration boiled over late in the match.

The Warriors have a great opportunity to head into the finals undefeated as they prepare to face the bottom two sides, Bungendore and the Queanbeyan Kangaroos. Goulburn and Yass currently sit on 26 points and remarkably have the same for and against. With Goulburn enjoying the bye this weekend, Yass must win against the Gungahlin Bulls before facing their Hume Highway rivals in the final round to claim second place. The Belconnen United Sharks are sitting comfortably in fourth place and will remain in that position as they head into finals.
U18’S The top four places are all locked up for the U18’s with the Queanbeyan Kangaroos, West Belconnen Warriors, Woden Valley Rams and Goulburn Workers Bulldogs all securing themselves finals football.
The Kangaroos have already cemented first place as they remain undefeated this season. The race to secure second place is wide open, but the Warriors currently hold a two-point lead over the chasing pack. However, the fourth placed Bulldogs remain a strong chance to steal second place as both the Rams and the Warriors have to face the Kangaroos.
RESERVE GRADE The race for the finals is wide open as only the undefeated Queanbeyan Blues and West Belconnen have mathematically secured their place. Second placed West Belconnen Warriors sit four places ahead of the fifth placed Yass Magpies and due to the Magpies taking on fourth placed Gungahlin this weekend, the Warrior cannot be caught. Merely three points separate third down to sixth as outsiders Yass and Tuggeranong will be hoping to win their two remaining fixtures and capitalise on any slip up from the leading pack. This weekend, the fourth placed Gungahlin Bulls will take on the fifth placed Yass Magpies in what is a must win match for both sides. With Yass facing the struggling Goulburn Workers Bulldogs in the last round, they appear to be the team best positioned to strike should any of the current top four sides slip up.
FIRST GRADE The top four has almost taken shape with the two Queanbeyan sides securing the top two positions on the ladder. The Blues appear destined to claim first place and could wrap up the minor premiership this weekend if they avoid defeat against West Belconnen. Having lost to Tuggeranong on Sunday, West Belconnen have slipped to fifth place. Although they are level on points with Tuggeranong, they are behind on goal difference with arguably the two toughest fixtures in the competition remaining as they prepare to face both Queanbeyan sides. Tuggeranong, on the other hand, have a kinder draw as they face the bottom placed Sharks before facing the Blues in the final round.
Yass need to win their two remaining matches to clinch third place, but poor results against Gungahlin and Goulburn could see them Magpies slip outside the top four. Goulburn could sneak into the top four but with a worse for and against, their hopes remain unlikely.

MATCH PREVIEW 5 & 6 AUGUST 2017 YASS MAGPIES V GUNGAHLIN BULLS 3PM SATURDAY AT WALKER PARK The Yass Magpies and Gungahlin Bulls will both aim to return to the winners’ circle when they cross swords at Walker Park in this week’s live‑streamed game. The Magpies will look to make amends for a narrow 36-28 loss to the second-placed Queanbeyan Kangaroos. It followed another mountainous challenge in which they succumbed to a 52-6 thrashing at the hands of the undefeated Queanbeyan Blues. Perched in third on the ladder on 19 points, Yass has an eye on returning to winning ways as they look to secure a finals berth. Gungahlin, who have been riddled by injuries this season, enjoyed a bye on the weekend after being put to the sword in a 48-22 belting at the
hands of the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs the week prior. Gungahlin centre Brad Scholes is well aware of the difficult challenge the Magpies are set to pose. “They’re always tough,” he said. “They’re a country team, so they’re always tough. They never give in in the forwards especially. They love their go-forward and they like to get quick play-the-balls.” But he has faith in his side’s chances. “I reckon we can beat Yass,” Scholes said. “We got pretty close last time and we beat them twice last year, so hopefully we can pip them.” Having made the semi-finals last year, the eighth placed Bulls are out of the finals race for 2017.
WODEN VALLEY RAMS V QUEANBEYAN KANGAROOS 3PM SATURDAY AT PHILLIP DISTRICT A premiership contender will also square off with a competition battler when the Woden Valley Rams and Queanbeyan Kangaroos meet at Phillip District.
The Rams will be out to produce a similar performance to the one that saw them nearly upset the Blues, while the Kangaroos are looking for their fifth straight win.
Floundering in seventh on the ladder on 13 points, the Rams are no longer a chance to qualify for the finals and are set to face a Kangaroos side flying high in second on the ladder on 28 points.
Having already sewed up a top-two finish, the Roos are intent on building momentum in the lead-up to finals footy.
TUGGERANONG BUSHRANGERS V BELCONNEN UNITED SHARKS 2:15PM SATURDAY AT GREENWAY A similar scenario will carry out in the Tuggeranong Bushrangers’ clash with the Belconnen United Sharks at Greenway. Tuggeranong, who sits in fourth on the ladder on 18 points, will look to bolster their finals hopes in their match with the last-placed Sharks who have just one 2017 win under their belt. The Bushrangers clinched a 34-18 victory over the West Belconnen Warriors on Sunday, who sit one place below them in fifth on the ladder on the same amount of points.
Tuggeranong coach Justin Giteau was pleased with his side’s performance. “It’s easily the proudest I’ve been of them all year,” Giteau said. “A lot of guys were injured and they showed a lot of courage to keep playing.” Meanwhile, the Sharks are licking their wounds after a 54-4 thumping at the hands of the Bulldogs and will look to turn in a much more inspired performance on Saturday.
WEST BELCONNEN WARRIORS V QUEANBEYAN BLUES 3PM SUNDAY AT RAIDERS BELCONNEN This week it will be the West Belconnen Warriors’ turn to confront the so far unstoppable Queanbeyan Blues. Terry Campese’s Blues stunning run has seen the ladder-leaders climb to 32 points as they start preparing for the run into the finals. Their 20-14 win over the Rams on the weekend was preceded by a 52-6 smashing of the Magpies. The fifth-placed Warriors will do their best to knock off Queanbeyan in a sustained quest to clinch a finals berth.
“I suppose we’ve got our back against the wall,” said Warriors coach Troy Thompson. “If we want to be in the finals we have to play these teams anyway so it’s going to be a pretty good game.” Although West Belconnen are on equal points with the fourth-placed Bushrangers, the Warriors’ task to make the finals doesn’t get any easier as they have the Kangaroos next weekend.
