The Ten Basics of Square Foot Gardening LAYOUT

CARE

BOXES

SELECT

Arrange your garden in squares, not rows. Lay it out in 4’ by 4’ areas.

Build boxes to hold a new soil mix above ground

AISLES

Space boxes 3’ apart to form walking aisles.

SOIL

Fill boxes with Mel’s special soil mix: 1/3 blended compost, 1/3 peat moss, and 1/3 coarse vermiculite.

GRID

Make a square foot grid for the top of each box. A MUST!

No Kidding

Location Pick an area that gets 6-8 hours of sunshine daily.

Locate Anywhere Close to Your House

Stay clear of trees and shrubs where roots and shade may interfere.

Economical Reduce Everything 5-to-1

Have it close to the house for convenience and protection.

Efficient Twice as Much - Half the Space Easy to Protect From Pests and Weather Earthy Friendly Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Highly Productive Fivefold Harvest

Existing soil is not really important. You won’t be using it. Area must not puddle after a heavy rain. Your purchases help support the Square Foot Gardening Foundation’s educational and humanitarian projects around the world.

NEVER WALK ON YOUR GROWING SOIL Tend your garden from the aisles.

Plant a different flower, vegetable, or herb crop in each square foot, using 1,4,9, or 16 plants per square foot.

PLANT

Conserves seeds. Plant only a pinch (2 or 3 seeds) per hole. Place transplants in a slightly saucer-shaped depression.

WATER

Water by hand from a bucket of sun-warmed water.

HARVEST

When you finish harvesting a square foot, add compost and replant it with a new and different crop.

Compost What is it?

Compost is a clean, crumply, rich, earthy substance you can make for your garden soil. Properly made, it has all of the nutrients your plants need. No chemical fertilizer needed in SFG. In just about a month you can produce your own compost. Pile up weeds, kitchen waste, barnyard manure (NOT dog or cat), dry grass clippings, leaves, etc. The greater the variety, the richer the compost. Don’t add fats, meats, dairy, or bakery products. Keep mixing in new things, turn the whole pile weekly and keep it moist.
