Elevating connectivity and boosting productivity
I am very pleased to welcome all UK rail suppliers to the UK Pavilions at InnoTrans 2024 and to have the opportunity to showcase some of the talented and innovative organisations operating within the UK rail supply chain in this publication. Whether you are a first-time visitor or a seasoned veteran, the world’s pre-eminent international trade fair for the railway industry boasts nearly 3,000 exhibitors from more than 50 countries. The innovation and expertise on display from across the globe over the course of the week is always exciting and inspiring.
This year’s event comes at an encouraging time for the global rail market with European rail supplier body UNIFE forecasting growth of 3% a year until the end of the decade fuelled by the prospect of 10,000 future rail project orders including greenfield investments, replacements and modernisation projects.
What’s more, key global macroeconomic trends such as urbanisation, digitalisation and sustainability are driving demand for transport which, in turn, enhances the competitiveness of rail not least because of its low carbon credentials. International investors look at rail as a destination for green finance. UK suppliers, including those who are featured in this publication, are well placed to capitalise on this upward trajectory given the growth in the export of rail-related goods and services across the world in recent years, particularly in regions such as the Middle East and Australia.
That reflects positively on the strength and depth of the UK’s domestic market as well as the future potential for leveraging this internationally.
Projects such as the Elizabeth Line and HS2 (so far) have been a superb showcase for the very best of our world-leading construction, consultancy, design, engineering and manufacturing expertise within the UK rail supply chain.
The recent change of Government in the UK is a further opportunity for a reset of the country’s international trading relationships. The commitment of the new ministerial teams across Whitehall to boosting trade and their recognition of the value of rail exporters and suppliers is welcome.
Elsewhere the UK rail reform agenda promises to deliver a more co-ordinated approach to the management of the railways which we hope will enhance the export capacity of UK rail suppliers. In particular, the Government has pledged to align international trade strategy with domestic industrial policy and strategy. This is positive news for UK rail manufacturers and their suppliers, both in developing a clear pipeline of procurement at home while fully leveraging export potential abroad.
An InnoTrans highlight is always the networking, the conversations and the
collaboration initiatives which can help deliver better railways around the world. Rail is a brilliant catalyst for elevating connectivity and boosting prosperity all around the planet.
May I and the RIA team wish you a successful week in highlighting the very best of UK rail supplier innovation, and hope that this will translate into tangible opportunities for you and your business in the months ahead. I also hope that you find UK @ InnoTrans to be a useful guide to activities and exhibitors in the UK Pavilions and a source of valuable information and networking opportunities.
Kind regards
Darren Caplan, Chief Executive, RIA

Aluminium Lighting Company
STRUCTURAL CONDITION MONITORING SYSTEM
Metal structures, eg lighting columns, are subject to slow decay and can fall over. Our Structural Condition Monitoring System (SCMS) has been developed to meet structural condition problems identified by Network Rail.
The SCMS encourages accurate planning and budgeting for maintenance and replacement, allowing cost effective interventions and better planning of disruption. It should also reduce the need for regular inspections, with much reduced inspection costs.
ALC’s Structural Condition Monitoring System reports on a structural support’s performance and estimates the Remaining Useful Life.
We have a Framework Agreement with Network Rail.
The SCMS offers:
Remote structural monitoring and analysis of all aspects of a support, creating a digital twin of the structure
Regular and better information about the relative structural condition of a support including awareness of its Remaining Useful Life
Early indication of potential problems
Prompt alerts of catastrophic failure, minimising risk and allowing a speedy response.
