Welcome to railbusinessdaily.com’s Rolling Stock Networking 2021 Show Review F
or the first time in over two years, Derby Arena hosted Rolling Stock Networking, the international indoor rail show with a focus on passenger and freight rolling stock, technical enhancements, depot equipment, ancillary services and the rail supply chain. Visitors and exhibitors were delighted to get involved in this unique exhibition to re-kindle contacts, meet with industry colleagues, promote their products and service offering and seek new opportunities. In total over 145 exhibitors were present on the day, with displays from new train builders, tier-one suppliers, maintainers, technical equipment suppliers, designer integrators and railway products companies. Rail Business Daily was of course pleased to be involved, as we hosted our RBD Conference during the show. It was exciting to get back to taking part in the live event circuit, particularly this year as the rail industry led the way in building back better as lockdown restrictions have been lifted. Despite the uncertainties ahead, we remain optimistic that better days are on the horizon and we can look forward to a brighter future for rail. As well as the excellent networking opportunities, the show provided some great speakers that took to the stages throughout the day, including a series of technical seminars organised by AEGIS, and a productive Meet The Buyer event hosted by the Railway Industry Association. More than just a rail exhibition, RSN was an opportunity for delegates to meet many organisations not traditionally seen on the exhibition circuit, meaning new leads and potential partnerships could be generated. I hope you enjoy reading this review and to learn more about some of the organisations that offer the exciting innovations needed to transform the passenger and freight industry. Best wishes,

A day (and event) to remember at Derby Arena O
n 30th September 2021, 150 diverse organisations came together for the annual Rolling Stock Networking (RSN) exhibition, for the industry’s highly anticipated event which is aimed specifically at Passenger and Freight Rolling Stock, Technical Enhancements, Depot Equipment, Ancillary Services and the Rail Supply Chain. Held at Derby Arena, RSN provided a major networking platform for suppliers and customers looking to strengthen existing and build new relationships in the sector. With companies large and small travelling from as far afield as Austria, Canada, The Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Italy, the show had an international flavour, as well as welcoming some new and well established names from our UK shores. On the day, visitors were able to meet with a range of exhibitors, including leading rolling stock manufacturers such as Alstom UK, Stadler, Vivarail, and CAF. Major equipment suppliers including LPA Group, FISA, Westermo, Depot Rail and GBR-Rail were also in attendance throughout the day. RSN 2021 offered an opportunity for visitors to meet many organisations not traditionally seen on the exhibition circuit, meaning new leads and potential partnerships were generated through the networking event. It was also exciting to see visitors experience first-hand some of the exciting innovations needed to transform the passenger and freight industry.
A bustling event held in the heart of the rail industry
A major benefit of RSN 2021 was its central location in Derby, the heart of the rail industry. Following the ending of COVID-19 restrictions, anticipation was high for a bustling event. Despite this, safeguards remained in place, with government guidelines followed throughout, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of all in attendance throughout the day. Created back in 2019 to mirror the highly successful RIN (Rail Infrastructure Networking) series of events, RSN brough a focus on the Traction and Rolling Stock Market to the rail industry event calendar. The day was a unique opportunity for railway rolling stock-related supply chain companies to make contact with a wide range of operators, leasing companies, depot infrastructure companies, consultancies, maintenance companies, new train builders and other supply chain companies. 4 |

Meet the Buyer and Technical Seminars At this year’s event, the organisers were especially delighted to welcome the Railway Industry Association Meet the Buyer and the AEGIS Technical Seminars as additional attractions to the show in 2021.
A comprehensive RBD Conference
This year RSN also welcomed the railbusinessdaily.com conference, where an impressive array of industry-leading experts delivered engaging presentations, sharing their knowledge, experience and innovative working practices during a series of sessions throughout the day. Speakers from throughout the rail industry were present, including Achilles’ Senior Vice President of Customer Engagement and Quality Assurance Katie Ferrier, East West Rail’s Head of Systems - Rolling Stock and Depots Louise Shaw and Customer Strategy Executive Sara Brooks, Rail Operations Ltd’s Chief Executive Karl Watts, CAF’s UK Procurement Manager Pablo Moreno, Railway Industry Association’s Policy Director Kate Jennings, and Railway Support Service’s CEO Andrew Goodman. The conference, included panel discussions and Q&A sessions, helping visitors learn about projects, innovations, successes and real-life railway experiences to support their own businesse objectives. The conference was well received and delivered in railbusinessdaily.com’s simple but impactful style. David McLoughlin, CEO at railbusinessdaily. com, said: “It was great so to see such a strong reception at RSN 2021, and we thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to host the conference on the day. There were so many engaging sessions and it was pleasing to see such a positive response to live events again after the challenges of the last 18 months.”
To support the charity RSN 2021 hosted a raffle and Vintage Trains has donated a fabulous prize of four First Class carriage tickets on a Vintage Trains excursion, with all proceeds donated to the Railway Children.
Supporting causes for good
Looking ahead to RSN 2022
Organisers at RSN were also proud to support the Railway Children charity, an organisation that fights for vulnerable children who live alone and are at risk on the streets. Railway Children provides protection and opportunity for children with nowhere else to go and nobody to turn to.
After such a fantastic turnout to the 2021 edition we are thrilled to be planning for RSN 2022’s return to Derby on Thursday, 7 July 2022. To book your space and secure an early stand reservation you can emai info@rsnevents.co.uk, with returning exhibitors receiving a £100 discount.

Building Back Better at RSN 2021Achilles’ seminar addresses supply chain sustainability and diversity At this year’s railbusinessdaily.com conference at RSN 2021, Achilles Information delivered an engaging seminar on how organisations can help better incorporate sustainability and diversity into their supply chains.
A
s one of the world’s leading global supply chain risk management companies, Achilles collects, validates and maintains essential supplier data through online questionnaires and physical audits. With 550 buyers using its services to search, source and monitor compliance with their suppliers, and a pool of 100,000 vetted and qualified suppliers, the team at Achilles is well placed to address the issue of supply chain sustainability and diversity. Led by Katie Ferrier Senior Vice President Customer Engagement & Quality Assurance at Achilles, the seminar addressed the challenges associated with incorporating 6 |
sustainability and diversity into supply chains. Katie outlined the importance and value now placed on supply chain sustainability and diversity, demonstrating how data can enable decision driving insights for both buyers and suppliers. Katie explained how Achilles helps its customers to improve standards and business performance by improving governance and compliance. She described how the firm provides clear and consistent ways to make sure compliance is adhered to, and outlined the consequences of not doing it, including commercial risk, prosecution and legal fines and the dropping of shareholder price.
Katie also explained how Achilles builds on its 30 years of supply chain data and expertise, by combining open-source information with an Achilles Score to deliver market leading insights on supply chain risk. The presentation outlined the rising risks supply chains have experienced in Q2 of 2021, including timber, HGV and retail delivery driver shortages, which are affecting multiple sectors, including the rail industry. The Achilles Supply Chain Risk Index (ASCRI), is a quarterly-released time series index measuring changes in supply chain risk. Trusted technology delivered through reliable service Fenix Rail Systems is an experienced and trusted provider of high-quality Terminal, Depot and Intermodal Train control systems and mainline signalling services. They bring quality, safety and reliability to the railways and its projects.
I
n a highly regulated industry such as rail, there is no compromise on system performance or safety. Fenix Rail Systems utilises proven technology and modern design methods to ensure that safety, reliability and maintainability are optimised on all of its systems. One of these technologies, which depot operators across the country are adopting is the trusted Tie-FenLock Train Control System. Widely used in Europe in more than 1,000 Train Facilities, the system has more than 30 years of operational use with a proven track record in increasing safety and providing a return on investment by year 4, on average. While many depot systems currently still operate from a Hand Point system, Fenix is the only UK provider to be able to install the system in any depot and future-proof the system to allow it to adapt to any future growth.
The difference it makes Digitalisation in rail has long been a hot topic, but choosing the right system is always essential to make sure it has maximum impact. Craig Purcell, CEO Fenix Rail Systems, said: “We know that this system has a proven track record in improving safety, reliability
Fenix is the only UK provider to be able to install the system in any depot and future-proof the system to allow it to adapt to any future growth and quality for all users. We’re essentially automating processes so operators can be used elsewhere, which reducing maintenance and a reliance on shunters and even the reliance on vocal communication. 12 |
railbusinessdaily.com
“From the conversations we’ve had with depot operators so far, we can tangibly see the difference that this is making to them and the fact that we have been able to provide accurate cost benefits analysis specific to their depot beforehand helps them to build a sensible business case. “As a company, we are on a mission to improve safety in Terminal, Depot and Intermodal facilities across the UK and we are delighted with the response so far.”
By automating the process of operating train facilities e.g. (Freight Terminals, Train Depots or Intermodals), it reduces the risk of accidents and incidents and provides a better working environment for all railway colleagues. Craig said: “The number one focus for any business working on the railways is safety. Companies can have the strictest regulations in place, but it can be sometimes down to simple
human error which can cause an accident or incident. “It’s important that we have systems in place to reduce that as much as possible, and by centralising the controls to one area in the depot, we are taking those risks away.” To find out more about the Tie-FenLock Train Control System, call Craig on 01926 358428 ext: 2003 for a free consultation.
Reducing strains and pains The TUC biennial survey of safety representatives identified the main reasons for loss of working hours for operational staff were due to: Back strains (35%) Slips, trips and falls (40%) Manual Handling injuries It also reports an estimated 35% of incidents or close calls are not fully captured by SMIS11 and there are issues with reporting. Taking into account legal proceedings, medical charges, damage to equipment, loss of production and insurances, a cost per fatality of anywhere between £2 to £7 million has been suggested. An additional risk occurs in depots with 3rd rail traction with conductor rail run at ground level.

Engineering excellence trusted by the UK rail sector

Building on extensive experience of delivering complex projects, particularly in power generation and other sectors requiring bulk materials handling equipment, and general specialist engineering solutions, it is now establishing itself as a key supplier to the rail sector. Following a decade of unprecedented change in its traditional markets, the company took a strategic decision to look at opportunities to diversify, with an emphasis on building closer relationships and partnerships with other UK manufacturers and engineering companies. Based near Derby, a city long associated with railway engineering, for Greenbank the rail sector was a natural focus of its efforts to explore new opportunities closer to home. As a result, the company has built extensive links with major rail suppliers, particularly in relation to the fabrication of train, rolling stock and infrastructure components. To facilitate this shift of focus, Greenbank has 34 |
made a significant investment in achieving a globally recognised rail industry standard. What if you could clean every train in your fleet, every day?
M
artin Whitbread, creator of the Orange Train Wash, painted a vivid picture for visitors to RSN. It was of a revolutionary train wash that would epitomise speed, convenience and environmental consideration. The Orange Train Wash is, he told visitors to stand J5, something brand new for rolling stock. He asked people to imagine an eight-car train arriving at the depot at the end of a long, busy day. The train, covered in daily dust and detritus, pulls up a road different to yesterday – the depot has a new maintenance project underway, and so the train’s destination today is a little different. The train moves up a point in the track where a small orange unit is sat at either side. Each one is only three metres by one metre. As the train approaches, powerful motors lift part of the cleaning units up into place – and then 60 jets fire into life, with deionised, 85-degree water blasting away the dirt from the day. Powerful rotating brushes buff the train to a shining finish. Each carriage on the train takes just 22 seconds to clean. In 4 minutes, the whole train is done. The water from the wash is nowhere in sight. Powerful air blades have pushed the water down into a track pan for recycling. Then another train passes through, and another. By the time the day is done, a whole fleet of sixty trains has been washed. The technology behind this powerful new Orange Train Wash is, Martin says, an attempt to change people’s view of how train maintenance 36 |
teams should imagine what’s possible. According to him, very little has changed in the way trains are cleaned over the years. The result, he says, is that generally this can mean a lot of water is lost in the cleaning process, chemicals are used, and vast swathes of time are taken up. Meanwhile, depot owners and fleet managers are bound by hard-to-move or entirely static machinery in terms of where the cleaning can take place. None of this is the case with the Orange Train Wash. In fact, overall, because the system is designed to constantly clean and recycle, it uses just one per cent of the amount of water typically taken to clean a vehicle.
And because throughout its efficient cycle the temperature is always kept at a comfortable twenty degrees, there’s no danger of the machine failing to work. A common pitfall, Martin says, is when water drops below a certain level – three degrees – and the washer is out of commission for a time. And when the work is done, the unit is simple to maintain. Its filtration system is set on a sliding door, allowing for an effortless changing process, the result being that the water is kept perfect for the job time after time. Everything is kept as convenient as possible – the whole patented system being overseen by software that integrates everything into one package. railbusinessdaily.com
