Read more about RBD’s conference on the next page.

Organised by Rail Business Daily (RBD) and sponsored by RISAS, the conference was a prime opportunity for delegates visiting RSN to understand the latest focuses for major players within rolling stock and gain valuable market intelligence.

Neil Ovenden, head of engineering, Rail Partners, gave everyone in attendance a brief introduction to the organisation — which exists to make the railway better by harnessing the expertise and creativity of private sector operators for the benefit of those who use the railway, passengers and freight customers, and those who pay for it, including taxpayers. He also looked at the post-pandemic world and what opportunities it will bring. Tim Robinson, a founder and chairman of DigiRail, spoke next. DigiRail delivers smart, sustainable, fit-for-purpose tailored digital solutions and offers a blend of digital and engineering expertise combined with an in-depth knowledge of the rail industry.

Paul Harwood, programme director, industry commercial, from the Great British Railways Transition Team, talked about the work they do laying the foundation for Network Rail’s successor. Looking to the future of our networks, he explained how Great British Railways will be a strong commercial partner.

Graeme Clark, the head of business development for Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, took a light-hearted look back at his career on the railways. He also looked ahead at the bright, exciting times the industry will have.

Step by step, they explained the timeline, the industrial strategy, the strength of partnerships built and the lasting legacy the programme will leave.

Maria Griffin and Bernie Rowell from Alstom and HS2 took the rail professional audience through the sheer scope of their high-speed project and its major ambitions for the sector.

Hosted throughout the day by RBD compere Nigel Wordsworth, the IConference aimed to inspire and inform those who attended with insight and an understanding of how their businesses can get involved from a procurement perspective.

Inspiring rail people Main sponsor RISAS opened the IConference after an opening speech from Amanda Solloway MP. Tony Howard joined RSSB with responsibility for the supplier assurance function in August 2021. Previously he was a director setting up standards, apprenticeship schemes, assessments, and industry certification schemes at the Building Engineering Services Association (BESA). During his speech at the IConference, Tony discussed RISQS and RISAS and the crucial need for assurance systems.

“It complemented the exhibition perfectly, giving visitors a perfect opportunity to network, catch up with old friends, and learn from key people in the industry. We are delighted to be part of RSN and look forward to hosting future editions of the IConference.”

Tim told delegates where he sees great opportunity for the rail sector supply chain as it embraces digital technology at greater scale.  A great occasion Chris Leech, managing director for RBD, said: “This year’s IConference truly encapsulated what RBD is trying to do – we aim to arm people across the industry with the information and intelligence they need to grow within rail. “The speaker selection this year provided that insight through not only exploring future opportunities for their businesses, but also sharing insight and learning across other industries and how it can be applied to rail.

A quick and easy process Job hunters appreciate the jobs board because the registration process is quick and easy — they can even now partially complete their registration using information derived from their social media accounts — simplifying the process immediately. And recruiters have been equally impressed by how easy the site is to navigate. They can add and change jobs quickly, use advanced filters to find and connect with the talent they are looking for, and they can set up alerts to ensure they are talking to the best people as soon as they become available.

“RBD Rail Recruiter is the next chapter in our service to the railway, and comes at a time when the jobs’ market is tough. We have spent months researching and developing a jobs board that is set to shake up recruitment in the railways as a direct response to calls by those working in the industry.

railbusinessdaily.com | 7 Railtex ReviewShowRSN 2022

Much more than just a jobs board

Dean Bruce, managing director of RBD Rail Recruiter said: “The feedback we’ve received since launching RBD Rail Recruiter has been phenomenal. “As soon as the site went live, the momentum and excitement quickly gathered pace as the industry immediately took notice. “Although we are only a few months old, we are already working with some of the industry’s leading recruitment agencies and major employers.

New jobs board revolutionises rail recruitment

David McLoughlin, CEO of Rail Business Daily, said RBD Rail Recruiter has made an instant difference to the rail jobs market. He said: “Our ambition in creating railbusinessdaily.com in 2017 was to be a force for good for the railways, championing the great businesses and people who make such a positive difference in keeping passengers and freight on the move across Britain.

“Clearly, working closely with the wider team at Rail Business Daily has also been invaluable; the connections, marketing power and sector experience have given us a flying start, and we will continue to work closely with other businesses in the group to provide a comprehensive service to any organisation working in the rail industry. “Timing has played an important part too. There’s upcoming investment – including the Integrated Rail Plan – which brings huge opportunities for those working in rail and those wanting to start their career in the industry. We are also proud to be working with HS2 to bring their jobs to a wider audience.”

Rail Recruiter has become the biggest rail recruitment website in the UK within just three months of launching

Part of the reason for the site’s instant success is the fact the it offers a one-stop-shop for job seekers where they can create a bespoke and detailed CV, access regularly updated careers advice, and easily view jobs similar to their previous searches. They can also sign up for alerts to avoid missing out on the latest opportunities.

RBD Rail Recruiter is now the ‘go-to’ website for recruiters looking for fresh talent and job seekers searching for their next move in rail. The website, which has been designed exclusively for the rail sector, has 1,300 jobs available to search at any one time – more than any other rail jobs board in the UK. Since its launch in May 2022, the site has posted jobs from more than 35 rail businesses, including some of the biggest recruitment agencies and employers, and seen more than 500 job seekers sign up.

You can visit RBD Rail recruiter at www.RBDRailRecruiter.com Email dean@rbdrailrecruiter.comDean: or call 01924 665960. Search for RBD Rail Recruiter on LinkedIn and Facebook to connect on social media.

“There was a clear gap with insufficient provision existing within the sector, and current suppliers are out of touch, but RBD Rail Recruiter has successfully filled this gap.”

The website has been launched by Rail Business Daily – the most powerful media business in UK Rail — at a time the industry needs it most, and in direct response to the sector’s call for a fresh, new and different approach - to modernise the jobs market. Already the website is racking up impressive stats as it attracts tremendous levels of interest, with more than 130,000 page views by 23,000 users, growing daily.

Recruiters also value the fact they can work closely with the RBD Rail Recruiter team who can help create job adverts, deliver real-time results on advert performance and boost and share jobs to a qualified audience of rail professionals via Rail Business Daily and its social media channels.

T raditional train washing solutions are enormous, expensive, and environmentally damaging. Old methods can result in a lot of water being lost. Chemicals are used, and the process wastes valuable time. But Orange Train Wash has a much more appealing solution. In short, its new product is a game-changer.

Simply put, the system is designed to recycle 90 per cent of its resources, filtering, deionising and reusing the same water. This makes it both cost-effective and environmentally friendly – priorities for our increasingly green-minded customers.

Train washing hasn’t changed in the last 30 years – until NOW!

Martin added: “Imagine an eight-car train arriving at the depot at the end of a long, busy day. The train, covered in dust and detritus, pulls up a road different to yesterday – the depot has a new maintenance project under way. “Small orange units sit at either side of the track. Each one is only three metres by one metre. As the train approaches, powerful motors lift part of the cleaning units up into place – and then 60 jets fire into life, with deionised, 85-degree water blasting away a day’s worth of dirt. Powerful rotating brushes buff the train to a shining finish. “Each carriage on the train takes just 22 seconds to clean. In four minutes, the whole train is finished.”

With the Orange Train Wash system, each carriage takes just 22 seconds to clean. Even a depot with four roads handling 60 trains a day can clean every train every day. Martin Whitbread, creator of The Orange Train Wash, said: “We were determined, not simply to address the problems of traditional cleaning methods, but to change the way the industry thinks about and approaches rolling stock maintenance.“That’swhy we developed The Orange Train Wash – because we saw a need for a fast, convenient, and, perhaps most significantly, water-saving alternative to traditional cleaning methods. “In fact, because the system is designed to constantly clean and recycle, it uses just one per cent of the water typically taken to clean a vehicle. For fleet managers looking to improve their environmental sustainability report, it’s a real gamechanger.”Orange Train Wash was developed with three guiding principles in mind – reduce, reuse and recycle.

Moving trains in and around workshops with zero emissions, the range of compact movers can reduce the need for trained drivers and the attendance of additional staff enabling local movement of any rolling stock. Recently launched by Multi-Mover UK, the MOVE-IT exhibited at RSN is a handheld device which allows a single operator to safely move rolling stock on rails with a battery-powered device. A single MOVE-IT offers operators the ability to push rolling stock weighing up to 150 tons or multiples thereof without the need of locomotives or heavy devices which require authorisation or a permit and is therefore more cost effective. “It’s incredibly safe, easy to operate, and because it’s battery-powered, it saves the environment,” says James Dixon, sales director. “But it also helps save on money; in rail, the conventional way to move a train is using another vehicle.“Diesel locos can cost between £200,000 to 2 million and uses litres of fuel per hour. Purchasing one of our MOVE-IT machines will cost in the region of £18,000 and, unlike a train, it’s easily stowed in a car or van. “We’ve already had feedback which suggests its use will also be important in breakdown situations, where the priority is to stop a locomotive obstructing the network.

Premier Rail Pits arrive on site with the access steps, lights and air points built in, and pit installation times are cut by up to 70 per cent, compared with reinforced concrete. There are five pit types in the Premier Rail Pit range, each designed to cater for various maintenance of the bogies and undercarriage of any type of loco or rolling stock. We can also work with you to create a bespoke product tailored to your requirements.

Alongside the MOVE IT, Multi-Mover UK supplies a range of rail shunters. BEAZ electric and hybrid shunters have a tractive effort of 500kg through to 10,000kg — 700T to 1000T train weight, and are ideal for a range of applications such as depots, loading and unloading, and rolling stock on rails.

“Our mission is to let people know that there is a better way of moving rolling stock that is more cost-effective as well. “If you work in rolling stock maintenance, our shunters and movers are the perfect tool.”

Multi-Mover UK offers a wide range of material handling equipment designed for the rail, industrial and commercial sectors.
