C A R O L I N E AT TA N EXHIBITION PREVIEW
This catalogue features a preview of a selection of new artworks by Caroline Attan, created for an exhibition that we had scheduled for May but which is now to be postponed to later in the year.
We welcome enquiries regarding these artworks, which are available for purchase ahead of the exhibition.
Caroline Attan’s work is characterised by circular grids that underpin meticulously folded paper collage forms, creating geometric and rotating compositions. The formal repetitions of the collaged elements are used in combination with hand-inscribed poetry. The titles of the pieces are suggestive of a deeply personal response to the content of the poems.
Latin American poetry is a rich source of inspiration for Attan and, in particular, the work of
Pablo Neruda whose explorations of conflicting emotions of desire, humour, anger, frustration and affection are translated into intricate combinations of text and delicately folded coloured paper.
C A R O L I N E AT TA N To Dream in this Valley Through the power of memory the land lives Also the blood of the ancestors Can you see, can you see why, he asks I still want to dream in this valley? Elikura Chihuailaf The title for my forthcoming exhibition, To dream in this valley, references a poem by the Chilean poet, Elikura Chihuailaf. The idea of memory embedded in the land is echoed in my work as the written narrative emerges and disappears under the rotating, folded shapes. In my circular compositions, contradictions are revealed through oppositional elements; light and dark, background and foreground, large and small, revealed and concealed. My large-scale circles invite an immersive experience where colours simultaneously harmonise and clash. Smaller works allow for quiet contemplation, a private dialogue likened to ancient calligraphy, where secrets are not quite revealed. My new works incorporate poems by the Latin American poets, Carol Bracho, Elikura Chihuailaf and Octavio Paz, inscribed in both Spanish and English. Profound and unsettling in their complexity, these poems express multiple viewpoints simultaneously. The form of the circle in my work allows me to explore a similar diversity, kept in balance through the repetition of motifs held in continual rotation. Caroline Attan, April 2020

The works featured in the next few pages are a selection of earlier works from previous collections which include a series of richly coloured monochrome works designed to hang as a set and one of the largest pieces that Attan has ever made.
“noche (night), crepūscula (twilight), noche clarete (claret), noche azul (blue), noche de amatista (amythyst), noche de la ciudad (night of the city) These minimalist pictures reference the sky at night and demonstrate how black is never completely dark or absent, black is a colour we create in our imagination. The folded card shapes are arranged in a circular composition so that they appear almost textural. Night skies appear quite dense and change the environment completely. The twilight sky is grey and the colours of city lights effect the sky at night, warm, cool or misty, these pictures convey the sensual effect of different night skies where absence is a tactile presence.” Caroline Attan Noche Series A set of Six works in Paper Collage Each 59.5 x 59.5 cm Price for the Set of Six £7,000
