Redux / Polariod Print
Famed for his creation of electrifying ima ges of a now bygone era. His technique of lighting, colour and composition helped to produce extraordinar y variety in his own unique visual style. This career path ha s its origins in Westenberg’s lifelong romance with the adventure of Rock & Rol l. Westenberg star ted this photo jour ney in 1980 a s a curious no vice but it wa sn’t until 1982, spending a fateful 6 months in Copenha gen, DK while in Architecture school, then a further 6 months in Barcelona, Spain, that the real serious work began. Westenberg’s brand of photography worked best when there wa s 100% instant enga gement with the subjects. Most times, he’s meeting these people for the first time, which creates it’s own set of chal lenges. Many subjects keep their guard up and ne ver give an inch. Musicians get bored almost immediatel y. They’re used to being on sta ge worldwide in f ront of tens of thousands of hot sweaty bodies so suffer no fools. This is not na vel gazing chin stroking anal ytical “zone” photography. It’s al l about catching moments of inspiration with famous faces in order to make them tr ul y iconic in the eyes of their fans and the eyes of the world. There is no let up. If you expect to ha ve any success, it’s tough and physical l y br utal on e ver y le vel up and down the scales. If you can’t cut it, you’re out. If you don’t produce, they mo ve on to the next person. Westenberg sur vived 35+ years in this business and wa s one of the busiest photographers on ear th for much of that time. There wa s no patience or time for those photographers who spent al l their own time seeking fame and glor y, it wa s ONLY about the work and producing great results. If world famous musicians are seeking you out to create for them, the lea st you can do is give 100+ percent to create world-beating ima ges for them. Ma ssivel y in demand by the World’s Record Labels and editorial press during the 1990’s, 2000’s and 2010’s in par ticular. He ha s photographed many of the most wel l-known ar tists, and his work ha s appeared in 1000s of books, CD’s and album co vers. Photographic contributor at Mojo Ma gazine for now almost 25 years. This wil l be Westenberg’s big gest exhibition since the first London show back in 2006 and represents an impor tant and significant record of this era’s music and photography. Now a number of these ima ges are final l y relea sed for purcha se in limited editions via Agnes B.
