‘
The attempt to reduce compositions down to their barest minimal lines and hues defines these paintings. There is often the sense of a landscape coming into being, suffused with early light or the indeterminacy of dusk. The floating softness of the image allows the viewer to move their gaze within it as one would upon a hazy view’
Over the course of a career spanning 25 years, Richard Whadcock has established himself as one of Britain’s leading landscape painters Known for his ethereal depictions of the East Sussex countryside, Whadcock’s primary source of inspiration is the shifting effects of light and shade experienced during long hikes across the chalk hills and rolling fields of the South Downs
Through the meticulous layering of transparent oil glazes, Whadcock captures a sense of light refracted through weatheral prisms of mist, fog and water. The sublime Romanticism of the resulting images recall the late, unfinished works of J M W Turner but Whadcock’s world is less disturbed by the destructive forces of nature Instead we are invited to gaze, meditatively, into glowing fields of diffused colour that draw influence from another of Whadcock’s great inspirationsAbstract Expressionism. Peering through the gossamer of shimmering hues, shadowy forms emerge to suggest great masses of prehistoric rock but the fluidity of the paint softens our focus and reminds us that the natural landscape is anything but permanent Whadcock finds magic here in the falling light of dusk, the interval between day and night, when reflection meets anticipation and horizons evaporate into air.
Since completing an MA in Printmaking at the Royal College of Art, Richard Whadcock has exhibited extensively in the UK, Europe and America. His works are represented in private and public collections worldwide Falling Light presents 24 new works in oil on canvas and paper comprising Richard’s first solo exhibition at Gloucester Room
