Hidden Objects The educational displays engage visitors with the outdoor narrative utilizing creative education. Narrative is an important aspect of learning. By providing cues and encouragement for developing engagement, the establishment of personal contexts makes sense of an exhibit and leads to deeper learning. As the viewer looks for the shapes (i.e. that comprise the catfish), he/she is also learning the basic concepts of design and spatial recognition, as well as other core concepts such as cognitive, memory and vocabulary.

The creatures are a representation of some of the most well known flora and fauna stretching from the swamps of South Louisiana to the Gulf of Mexico. Each creature was hand develped in cubist style, to be comprised of layered aluminum planes. The shape of each plane is inspired by the water wall and the organic shapes of each animal. The layering process was inspired by the multiple sealife paintings and curved line aesthetic located throughout the NICU. We combined all these elements to create unique yet recognizable 3 dimensional forms. Each of the creatures are placed within their normal environment. Accompanied with the educational boards, these forms allow children and adults alike to play a Hidden Objects game and learn interesting facts about their local ecology.

Plan

Site, Fabrication and Installation:

A

During Design Development, we will work closely with the Woman’s Hospital review committee to further advance the project. Through concept refinement, full-scale prototype review, detailed construction documents, and pricing reviews; we will develop an optimal design, fabrication and installation approach.

Maintenance Approach: We anticipate using familiar and durable architectural materials for the art program elements. We realize that maintenance will probably be limited to infrequent cleaning of the artwork surfaces—the artwork will perform as any architectural components would. The maintenance manual that we produce will include the construction documents for all art program elements and specific maintenance procedures.
