GAYGUIDE 2016/2017 FREE GUIDE
WELCOME TO COPENHAGEN
COPENHAGEN is a very open-minded and tolerant city. We have a history of sexual liberality and on many levels we are frontrunners when it comes to LGBT rights. The Copenhagen LGBT scene boasts numerous nightclubs and cafés, and we have a vibrant and colourful cultural life. As Lord Mayor I do my very best to ensure the social and sexual tolerance that Copenhagen is so famous for. In Copenhagen, we are proud to protect and promote the freedom of expression for all minority groups. We do not tolerate hate crimes and discrimination based on gender or sexual orientation, and we have many initiatives to curb prejudices and make room for diversity. For instance, we have an app to report discrimination in the nightlife, and we have made equality and LGBT rights an obligatory part of education in our schools. Besides this, we support several organisations and events such as Copenhagen Pride and 2 Copenhagen Gay Guide 2016/2017
MIX Copenhagen Film Festival – events, which enable the LGBT community to contribute to the rich diversity that makes Copenhagen the city, it is today. I hope that you during your stay will find that Copenhageners are indeed open-minded people and help us keep Copenhagen a diverse city with room for everyone. I welcome you to Copenhagen and hope you will enjoy your stay in our beautiful city. Sincerely
Frank Jensen

SHOPPING IN COPENHAGEN DANISH DESIGN, whether it is furniture or clothing, is characterised by its clean, simple lines, great materials and classic creations that never go out of style. Copenhagen offers a huge variety of shopping possibilities spread over different areas in the city. In and around the pedestrian shopping street Strøget, you will find flagship stores by leading Danish fashion designers such as Mads Nørgaard, Henrik Vibskov, and Wood Wood. Copenhagen is also a great place to shop interior design. The gayowned shop Nordic Nesting in Studiestræde 51 has a broad selection of Danish and other Nordic designs, both classic and new brands. At Illums Bolighus you can also find a big selection of Danish design classics, and nearby you find the flag stores of Royal Copenhagen porcelain. Georg Jensen silverware, Hay modern and colourful designs, and Stilleben ceramics.
Both design and fashion is available at Copenhagen’s two big department stores, Magasin du Nord and ILLUM. In February 2016, ILLUM was named one of the world’s most spectacular department stores by the New York based Travel + Leisure magazine. If you are more into small and quirky shops, move away from the pedestrian streets and explore the smaller streets in the Inner City and areas like Vesterbro, Nørrebro and Østerbro.

AXGIL GAYGALLA 2017 Galla 2017 will take place in the beginning of 2017 in Copenhagen.

THE AXGIL GAYGALLA is an anual award show in Copenhagen, hosted by Rainbow Business Denmark. The event is a great party – a gathering for homosexual, bisexual, transgender and straight people, young and old, ordinary citizens and celebrities. They pay tribute to people, organisations, and businesses that have contributed towards creating better living conditions for LGBT people in Denmark and a more vibrant life in the LGBT community. The nomination process will take place in November 2016. Anyone will be able to nominate people, organisations and businesses within the eight different prize categories. From the many inputs, the AXGIL GayGalla steering committee will select three nominations per prize category, with an online public voting procedure, taking place in January 2017 to select the winners. Obviously, the names will only be revealed on the big evening: the AXGIL Gay

GETTING AROUND Bicycling Copenhagen is a great city to ride a bicycle. There are 369 kilometres of separated bicycle tracks and 58 kilometres of green bicycle routes. You can rent bicycles at most hotels around the city as well as at special bicycle rentals. Copenhagen has several bicycle taxi companies and especially during summer, you will see rickshaws all over the inner city. You can use the bicycle taxis as a fun, fast, inexpensive and environmentally friendly alternative to regular taxis. Cars and car rental All major car rental companies have offices in Copenhagen. However, parking is complicated and very expensive in the city centre. Metro, bus and trains Copenhagen’s driverless Metro is praised for its design. It is fast, efficient and runs 24 hours a day. Buses and harbour buses are also part of Copenhagen’s public transport network. S-trains are available from early morning till after midnight. During Friday and
Saturday night, the S-trains run all night. Regional trains can take you to North, West and South Zealand, and the Øresund trains to the airport and to Copenhagen’s Swedish twin city, Malmö. The train service between Copenhagen and Malmö runs 24 hours a day: Every 20 minutes during the day and evening, and once an hour during the night. Because of the refugee crises in Europe, Sweden has introduced ID-controls which means that you may have to change trains at Copenhagen Airport station before being allowed to travel to Sweden. Taxi and Uber Danish taxis are authorized and priced according to the taximeter. Most accept credit cards, but please inform the driver as you get in the car. Tips are included in the fare. The legal situation of Uber in Denmark was unclear when this Gay Guide was send to print. At the streets of Copenhagen there are many Uber-drivers, and Uber works like in most other countries where it hasn’t been outlawed.
Several bus routes stop at the central station. 30 Copenhagen Gay Guide 2016/2017
BEACHES & CRUISING Amager Fælled At Amager Fælled gay men have sex year-round, but many gays also come to sun-bathe during summer. Go to Zigøjnerpladsen, situated near the parking lot at the beginning of Lossepladsvej after entering from Artillerivej. Amager Strandpark Amager Strandpark has a long sandy beach, but if you prefer to avoid sand, go to Helgoland at the northern end of Amager Strandpark. However, Helgoland is only open to the public from May till September. The nearest Metro station is called Øresund. Bellevue Strandpark A few metres from Klampenborg station, a short train ride from the city centre you will find this lovely beach. The northern end of the beach is a combined nude and gay beach. Ishøj Strand Beach park south of Copenhagen with some gay action. From Ishøj Station it is a 1.5 km walk or bicycle trip to the beach.
The gay section is between Pilehuset and Lynghuset. Tisvildeleje Strand Tisvildeleje is 60 km from Copenhagen. A beautiful and fairly secluded beach with action in the dunes and pines. From Tisvildeleje Station walk down the hill towards the beach. After the beach parking lot, follow the coastline for about half an hour until you see fewer straight families and more gay men. Ørstedsparken The busiest and most central cruising area. During the day cruising primarily takes place around the public toilets. From sunset till early morning the cruising is all over the park, but particularly around the trees on both sides of the bridge in the middle of the park. Occasionally gay and bisexual men are attacked at night and in the early morning. Be careful and don’t hesitate to contact the police. Copenhagen Police are strongly committed in the fight against hate crimes.
