Research / Selecting a Director

I chose three on list director — Jean Pierre Jeunet, Wes Anderson, Gus Van Sant. The reason I choose them because their all have some films that I prefer or like. My thoughts was if I am going to do this for three months, I had have to at least like the films. I finally chose Gus Van Sant. I like his movie's mood.Which is a suitable for making into a film festival.

GUS VAN SANT Gus Green Van Sant, Jr. Born July 24, Louisville, Kentucky, He is an American film director, screenwriter, painter, photographer, musician and author who has earned acclaim as both an independent and more mainstream filmmaker. His films typically deal with themes of marginalized subcultures, in particular homosexuality. “In the late 1980s, Gus Van Sant commenced establishing himself as one of America’s leading and most influential independent filmmakers. His films, often peopled with characters scuffling along on the fringes of American society, explore human feelings and frailties in often-understated fashion, and for the most part, Van Sant has proven himself a filmmaker with a deft touch. it was Drugstore Cowboy that established him as one of independent filmmaking’s most authoritative new voices. The film’s low-key tale of a pack of 1970s-era junkies in perpetual pursuit of drugs won near-unanimous accolades.”

1989 Drugstore Cowboy 1991 My Own Private Idaho 1993 Even Cowgirls Get The Blues 1995 To Die For 1997 Good Will Hunting 1998 Psycho 2000 Finding Forrester 2002 Gerry 2003 Elephant 2005 Last Days 2007 Paranoid Park 2008 Milk 2011 Restless 2012 Promised Land 2015 I Am Michael 2015 The Sea Of Trees

Why have I chosen him? Gas Van Sant is considered one of the most prominent auteurs of the American Independent filmmakers. His films, often peopled with characters scuffling along on the fringes of American society, explore human feelings and frailties in oftenunderstated fashion. In his film I always can find the resonance. Everyone will have the trouble of adolescence. Good Will Hunting is my favorite one. Is the story of is about a genius who can change, and grow, if he chooses to. In my point of view everyone has tough time in life, sometime we fail it, we make a mess of everything. But we can have choice if we want. The magic power is in your hand to fix everything, make your life better.

Wales Anderson Wesley Wales Anderson was born on May 1, 1969, in Houston. Texas. He is an American film director, film producer, screenwriter, and actor. His films are known for their distinctive visual and narrative style. Anderson attended the University of Texas in Austin, where he majored in philosophy. It was there that he met Owen Wilson. They became friends and began making short films, some of which aired on a local cable-access station. One of their shorts was Bottle Rocket (1994), which starred Owen and his brother Luke Wilson. The short was screened at the Sundance Film Festival, where it was successfully received, so much so that they received funding to make a feature-length version. Bottle Rocket (1996) was not a commercial hit, but it gained a cult audience and high-profile fans, which included Martin Scorsese.

12

Why have I chosen him? As a visual stylist, Anderson has gotten progressively more inventive with each film. His films are also casting, music, mood and even production design-driven he works with more or less the same key production personnel every time. I think his film looks like oil painting, every shot has beautiful and balance. I like the movie color from him. My favorite one is The Grand Budapest Hotel. The Grand Budapest Hotel is a 2014 comedy film written and directed by Wes Anderson, from a story by Anderson and Hugo Guinness, inspired by the writings of Stefan Zweig. It stars Ralph Fiennes as a concierge who teams up with one of his employees (Tony Revolori) to prove his innocence after he is framed for murder.

1991 Delicatessen 1995 The city of Lost Children 1997 Alien: Resurrection 2001 Amelie 2004 A Very Long Engagement 2009 Micmacs 2013 The Young and Prodigious T.S. Spivet

Jean Pierre Jeunet Jean-Pierre Jeunet was born in Roanne, Loire, 3 September 1953, France. He is a French film director and screenwriter known for the films Delicatessen, The City of Lost Children, Alien: Resurrection and Amelie. He bought his first camera at the age of 17 and made short films while studying animation at Cinémation Studios. He befriended Marc Caro, a designer and comic book artist who became his longtime collaborator and co-director. They met at an animation festival in Annecy in the 1970s.

Why have I chosen him? Jeunet’s films often resonate with the late twentieth century French film movement, and allude to themes and aesthetics involving German expressionism, French poetic realism, and the French New Wave. I love French poetic realism in Jeunet’s films. Amelie is my favorite one. In the movie Amelie is an innocent and naive girl in Paris with her own sense of justice. She decides to help those around her and, along the way, discovers love. In my point of view, I like the concept about this movie. The film gave me a great deal of inspiration about life, and also taught me how to look at the world in another way. Believe love believe yourself. love believe yourself.

Gus Van Sant's hometown Portland. HollyWood Theatre 4122 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland July 24th - 26th

Hollywood Theatre The Hollywood Theatre is a Portland landmark with a national reputation for award-winning film programming, innovative educational programs, and providing fiscal support for local filmmakers. We show classic and contemporary films, host live performances and special guests, and produce innovative film series like Hecklevision, B-Movie Bingo, and Kung Fu Theater. The Hollywood Theatre opened its doors on Saturday, July 17, 1926, with a showing of the silent film MORE PAY - LESS WORK. A 1,500-seat silent movie palace complete with an 8-piece orchestra and organist, the Hollywood was the last venue in Portland built as both a vaudeville house and a movie theatre. Designed by Bennes & Herzog architects of Portland, a local advertisement called it a “palace of luxury, comfort and entertainment unsurpassed by any theatre on the Coast. It proved such a popular destination that Portland's Hollywood District ultimately took its name from the Theatre.

Photography

I wanted to develop a overall theme about a 17 year old runaway boy wandering in an abandoned industrial factory area with his skateboard around Portland. Escaping from a dysfunctional family and seeking an identity to obtain meaningful engagement with some community on the road.I generated my photos by shooting the place and find right time to photograph. The best time is 5am in the early morning.
