St Ann’s School field - View Road, Rainhill FREE PARK N’ RIDE FROM RAINHILL HIGH FIRST BUS 11:20
Rainhill Gala 2016 30th May 2016 -11:30am St Ann’s School Field, View Road Hi and thanks for picking up this year’s Gala programme, it’s great to be back once again and I’d like to thank you for taking the time to read through our programme. If you’re new to Rainhill a HUGE welcome awaits you at this year’s Gala, if not you’ll know that the event is Rainhill’s biggest party of the year and everyone’s invited. So what’s this programme all about? Well it’s a way of reminding everyone about the Gala on the 30th May, we also hope to help and support our local businesses (why not keep the programme and use it when you need a tradesperson?), but what it does do is help us raise funds to put the event on without impacting on the funds we give away. The money raised from selling advertising space in this programme all helps towards covering some of the expenses we incur such as insurance, toilets, tents, chairs etc., and by doing this we aim to raise even more money for local good causes in and around the Rainhill area. Last year we gave away over £8,500 of Gala Cash and supported lots of local groups. If you’re involved in a local group read on to find out how you could benefit from any surplus this year!!
Of course the event wouldn’t run without the team of splendid volunteers who give their time freely to put on various events throughout the year. In 2011 we were awarded the Rainhill Good Citizen award and since then our volunteers keep winning the award, not for their involvement in the Gala but for the other valuable work they carry out in the village, this year we want to congratulate Chris Tigwell for his award, yet again keeping it quiet from us! Well done Chris. We are always looking for more people to help us, either on the committee, working behind the scenes or up front in public facing roles, in fact it doesn’t matter if you have an hour to spare on Gala day or if you want to come to our monthly meetings and out your ideas across, we’re all really friendly and everyone is welcome. Anyway we hope to see you on Gala day this year, the gates open at 11:30 and don’t forget the free park and ride from Rainhill High which runs all day. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for more details on the lead up to the event. See you there.. Steve Clarke, Chairman

2015 donation recipient - special report The Armchair Yoga group for patients and carers affected by cancer, were extremely pleased to receive a cheque for £270 from the Rainhill Gala Committee. Sadly, over the last few years our numbers had become depleted and we were struggling to find the rent for the hall where we hold our yoga sessions. With your generous donation we were able to pay 12 weeks rent in advance, giving us the opportunity to build up a kitty towards future shortfalls in the rent. For those who haven't heard of our group, Armchair Yoga therapy was first taught by Shirley Doolan at the Lilac centre, St Helens hospital. Shirley is a fully qualified yoga teacher who volunteers her time and expertise, free of charge, to provide gentle yoga exercises, including breathing techniques and relaxation.
14
This in turn improves respiration, increases energy levels, clears toxins, releases tension and restores balance and calm. All our group can testify to the great benefits they get from the sessions, both cancer patients and carers alike. Because the exercises are Armchair based and very gentle they are suitable for everyone regardless of their level of fitness and medical history. The group are extremely friendly and supportive and we usually round off our sessions with a nice cup of tea and a natter, the tea kindly provided by St John's Church. If anyone would like to try a session of Armchair Yoga please either ring Shirley on 07979155153 or come along on Tuesday afternoons, 1pm-2.30pm, to St John's Community Centre, Crossley Rd, Ravenhead, St Helens, WA10 3ND,(Close to the A57, St Helens to Prescot Rd)

A Magical Christmas Santa Trail It was the last event of 2015 but was a real magical occasion despite the British weather. The plans had been set for months using the grounds of Blundells Hill Golf Club with a winter forest planned for a Sunday in late November, hundred of costumes, decorations and props were all ready, but then the news nobody wanted, the strongest winds of the year and the event was due to be cancelled. However we’re Rainhill Gala and we don’t do cancelling so working quickly with Phil and Steve at Blundells Hill the committee, led by Cultural Director Julie and Secretary Zoe set about reworking the trail indoors. Then came Sunday and so did the wind proving it was indeed the right decision but moving the event indoors didn’t spoil the fun! Over 400 children were greeted by characters, invited to play games and told stories along the trail and at the end all meeting Father Christmas who even brought Mrs Christmas along. The committee would like to thank everyone who helped with the event, especially Blundells Hill Golf Club for allowing us to use their clubhouse for the event, Elm Construction who built Santa’s Grotto, several members of Rainhill Rotary who stood outside during the extreme winds, Rainhill Musical Theatre Company for dressing up and guiding the children around the trail, St Helens Air Cadets for their help in marshalling people, staff and volunteers at Willowbrook Hospice and of course the dozens of local people and businesses who donated props, came along on the day and helped in many other ways. See more pictures of the event on our Facebook page by going to facebook.com/rainhillgala Got an idea for a future event? Get in touch, we’d love to hear it!

Oakwood Pre-School
Playgroup welcomes all children aged 2 to 5 years through their doors during 8am and 3pm in school terms. We offer 15 hour places for 2 , 3 and 4 year old funded children as well as places for parents who wish longer hours or pay for their children’s sessions if not funded. The children recently invaded Underwater Street in Liverpool and investigated different science activities through play with many enjoying the bubble play and making a volcano. We are looking forward to a visit to Martin Mere in Burscough to learn about new life with the younger children while the older group will be visiting Acorn Farm in Kirkby to milk a goat, pet the baby animals and learn about the new life on a farm. The children created a field of poppies for Rainhill Civic Society world war event in St Ann's Church and enjoyed looking at all the exhibits in September. We also enjoy our storyteller visits every month and have recently started a Stretch-n-Grow session learning about exercise and Healthy Living each week. We enjoyed Lunch with Santa in a local pub and delivered our Christmas cards and gifts as well as singing our Christmas songs for the Luncheon Club Christmas Party in Rainhill Village Hall. There were lots of Nursery Rhyme Characters and Storybook Characters in the room for our Book Day Celebrations with a visit from Peppa Pig and Iggle Piggle to add to the excitement. You will regularly see us around the village shops, parks and joining in with story time at Rainhill Library and Giggletots sessions. We will be saying goodbye and good luck to 25 children as they move onto their next big adventure in the local Primary Schools in July with a celebration of their time in Oakwood and graduation ceremony with their families in a local venue. If you would like your child to join in our fun then p l e a s e contact Diane on 07768 063 564 or call in and see us in the Scout Hut on Old Lane, Rainhill.
2016 programme competition To celebrate the 2016 Olympics in Rio, we tasked youngsters in Rainhill to design a front cover for this programme in a carnival theme and once again the Gala committee had a really difficult time choosing a winner however after some deliberation, and several cups of tea, the design of Phoebe Griffiths was chosen and is printed on the front cover. Well done to Phoebe who went against some really tough competition.
Runner-up Kieran Rose
As there were so many we couldn’t even choose one runner up so we decided to have two so congratulations to Hollie McDonald and Kieran Rose. All three children receive a free wristband to go on all of this year’s funfair attractions, well done!

IMPORTANT EVENT SAFETY Whilst we make every effort to ensure the safety of your children, the Rainhill Gala is a public event and as such we would ask that you ensure the safety of your children by supervising them at all times and not allowing them in restricted areas marked with tape or barriers. Please look for the lost children meeting point on site when you arrive which will be ‘Gala Hospitality Stall’ and make your child aware of what to do if you lose each other. Tell them not to panic and look for a Gala steward wearing a Hi-Visibility vest, police officer or security personnel.

Can we help your organisation? Since 2007 we have distributed nearly £40,000 to local groups in and around Rainhill and this year will be no different. Willowbrook Hospice will remain as our main beneficiary however we still want to give away Gala cash to smaller local groups. The 2015 Rainhill Gala was one of the best yet with record crowds, the success of the day reflected in the huge sum we managed to give away last year and we are once again inviting you to get in touch if you represent a local group and you think you can benefit from Gala cash. We aim to award money to groups in and around Rainhill who may find it difficult to find funding elsewhere. We don’t have the same criteria as some funding providers, the dreaded 30 page form, nor do we discriminate either. We do however insist that for a group to be eligible, that the entrance or joining requirements are not overly restricted and that the group operates in the interest of many people. We’ve made awards to dozens of local groups and always prefer to support smaller community groups in and around Rainhill with smaller amounts We don’t know how much we will be able to award this year, if anything, however any surplus funds will be divided between Willowbrook and local causes. If you would like to apply for funding, please apply by sending an email to funding@rainhillgala.co.uk giving as much detail as you can about your organisation. The closing date for applications is 1st July 2016 at which point we will reply to all applicants to indicate if we will be looking further into their application. We will of course need to verify all groups and someone from Rainhill Gala will need to come along to a group meeting or event. Terms and conditions apply, these are available on our website at www.rainhillgala.co.uk/funding and we promise to reply to all applicants.

RAINHILL MODEL RAILWAY CLUB Rainhill Model Railway club was founded in 1995 and from an initial twenty one people who attended the inaugural meeting in St. Ann’s Parish Rooms. The club meets on two evenings a week in designated clubrooms and the members are busy constructing a number of layouts in gauges from N (1:160) to G (Garden Railway size), as well as working on personal projects. The club holds two exhibitions a year, one a family show at Christmas time with Santa as an honoured guest, and a main show held over two days on the first weekend in March. Both these events take place in the Rainhill Village Hall. In addition to our own exhibitions the club attends other events put on by model railway clubs and organisations all over the North of England and Wales. Since inception the club has supported many charities, such as Willowbrook Hospice, NCH, and Rainhill Guides to name but three. The members see the club as an essential part of the Village scene and are proud to be part of the Rainhill Gala organisation. Paddy’s Barn Dance 2016 This year marked the SEVENTH annual barn dance in the Village Hall however as it was a couple of days after St Patrick’s day we adopted an Irish theme for the evening. In addition to the normal fun, live music and dancing, the crowd enjoyed a wholesome plate of Irish Stew (with a crusty lid) and there was Guinness a plenty. Over 100 people came to the fun filled evening and yet again the people of Rainhill demonstrated how much they like a good time! The barn dance was the first in the 2016 calendar for the Gala and has been a way of raising vital funds which help us to make bigger donations following the main event. The Barn Dance, disco’s and other smaller events are run with the aim of raising funds to p u r c h a s e equipment for the main event, ie gazebo’s, chairs etc., plus paying for toilet hire, l i c e n c e s , insurance and all the other necessities needed to run the Gala. Of course the Barn Dance, along with all other events, is run entirely by our team of s p l e n d i d volunteers. Keep an eye on our Facebook page for the next event.

PS you can get clues on our website, Facebook page and Twitter site (ask a grown up to help you with this!) Good luck!
