How is it possible to love surfing when living in Denmark? Christoffer Hartkopp is one of the best surfers the small country of Denmark has ever seen. But is that the same as success? Journalist Lasse Lindhardt Jensen took a trip to the seaside to hear the story of a young and hardworking Danish surfer.
A white Suzuki Swift pulls over at the train station in Helsingør, Denmark. A curly blond guy steps out in baggy grey pants, cap and a winter jacket. He looks like a snowboarder, but he is a wave surfer. Christoffer Hartkopp, or just Chris, aged 22, is on his way for a Sunday surf session. When people hear the word ‘surfing’, they expect boardshorts, 30 degrees sunshine and tanned onlookers in bikini, but surfing in Denmark is far from Hawaii. “Today, when it is cold like this, I will wear my winter suit. With this northern wind I will freeze to the bone,” Chris says. The car just fits his 5.10’ board. It says 7:55 AM on the display, it is November, windy and five degrees outside, but the sky is clear. Chris drives past the local windsurf club and shortly after pulls over to have a closer look at the sea. “I think we could be expecting breast-high waves during the day,” he says.

Surfing - the cold industry Although Chris nowadays surfs in Denmark, it all started a place much warmer on a vacation to Lanzarote with his professional athlete parents where 11-year-old Christoffer Hartkopp tried surfing for the first time. For him, surfing was like love at first sight and he was hooked immediately. When returning to hometown, Ålsgårde, on the North coast of Zealand in Denmark, he met up with a couple of local surfers who taught him about weather conditions and the different wave spots in the area. “Then we rode our bikes or skateboards to the wave spots. Many thought it was a little hard-core to surf in air of minus five degrees and two degrees cold water. Sometimes we even biked in the snow

European Tour, Chris is having a hard time getting sponsors and has been turned down in several meetings. “People have said to me: ‘I know you are good, Christoffer, you are the Danish champion. But who sees what you are doing? Who is the recipient? Had I been playing golf, soccer or something else, there might have been better chances of getting sponsors.” Therefore, Chris has to spend of lot of energy promoting himself and trying to convince companies that surfing is worth paying attention to. A very important tool in doing so is social media.

The golden shot So to get more fans, Chris is always searching for that golden shot of him ‘nailing’ a difficult trick on his board in the sunset - a picture that can be shared around the world or maybe even make it to a surf magazine. A grey station car parks right next to us. A man in his fifties with blond middlelong hair and a grey hoodie steps out of the car. It is Mark Wengler, Christoffer’s photographer. “He is kind of like a father and manager to me, but I have actually only known him for three or four years,” Chris says, before he gets out of the car and starts chatting with a group of other locals who have shown up. Mark tells the story of when he was in Portugal to take photos of Chris in a competition he was in. On the first day of the competition Chris had been out partying the night before and as a consequence his surfing suffered very badly. When the day was over, Mark told

getting sponsors.
“The next two days he did not drink and stopped eating fast food. And then he surfed like a dream,” Mark finishes. It is shivery cold and everyone is covering themselves. The wind has been building up the waves, which are now up to 1.5 meter high. Chris takes a pee. The wind is from northeast. With a green towel around his waist he changes into his wetsuit, standing in the lee of the open trunk. Finally, he waxes the board with his bare rose hands and then starts making his way towards the water. Knowing this spot as his own hip pocket,

time. He turns his board towards the coastline, looks behind in search for a wave, finds it, takes three strong paddle strokes and jumps the board. He is on it, but it is a short one. The next wave takes him 20 meters down the coast, but he has to ‘pump’ with his legs to keep it going. He catches the third wave too, but when trying to take a sharp left turn, the wave punches away the board underneath him and he ends up in the white foam. On the coast Mark has set up his camera equipment and searches for Chris in the viewfinder. He is on the board again, paddling out for the next wave with his name on it. A cold surge of water comes at him, but like a seal, he elegantly swims underneath it. After making his way behind the breaking waves, he sits on the board for a while. Chris’ mom happens to come by as well. She was exercising on her MTB and is now standing on the windy coast looking at her son, as she has done so many hours when he was younger. Chris gets down on his board again and puts a hand up as a signal to Mark. He starts paddling, goes for it, and gets it. This one is better and faster than the others, and as he picks up speed he does a quick, sharp turn back and forth, as if he slices the board into the lip of the wave.
Going pro in Europe Two and a half hour later, and with only a few breaks to have a look in Marks viewfinder, Chris is done for today. The wind has calmed down a bit and so have the waves. A few other local surfers have been in the water at the same time as Chris, including a small seal that popped his head up the water and swam around only 20 meters away. But none of the other surfers lasted as long in the cold water as the 22-year-old surf champion. Surfing in Scandinavia is no thing for weaklings. “We are surfing in full winter suits, which get really heavy when they start taking water in. The water is cold and it drains your energy. There are a lot of things making it much easier to surf in warm water,” Chris says. If you feel like driving a lot and making an effort, it is possible to surf up to 150 days a year in Denmark, Chris says. Though, compared to e.g. Portugal and France, the waves are much smaller and rarely good for doing tricks. But actually, Chris experiences that the difficult conditions for a surfer in Scandinavia are making him stronger when attending competitions. “Often, when I go from waves like this to surfing The European Surf Tour with way better waves, then it is suddenly easier to surf,” he says.

Even though Chris loves Denmark, he is still thinking of moving to Por tugal to chase his dream of becoming a full time p r o s u r f e r.
So far he has managed a top-35 on the European Tour and he is hoping for more. But it takes hard work. “The level in Scandinavia is way lower than in Europe. So when you go down there and meet professionals in e.g. France who surf every day, then it is very hard. Also, when I am surfing in Europe and cannot stay at a sponsors place, then I live in my car, while the others stay at four or five star hotels. So it is a little hard-core.” But when it is this tough to make a living from surfing, why bother then? “It is the rush and adrenaline you feel when being out there and the days never look the same. Today, waves were small and onshore. On other days, they are bigger. A skateboard ramp is always the same, where you can go find a new ramp. With surfing you can go the same place, same beach actually, but being out on the water is never the same. One day you find head-high waves and the next day, they are only knee-high. No matter the height, it is always fun.” Even though Chris loves Denmark, he is still thinking of moving to Portugal to chase his dream of becoming a full time pro surfer. “Portugal is nice and close and you do not need a Visa. My sponsor also has a surf school there, so maybe I can work as an instructor and work at a bar. I will probably only make 500 Euros at the bar, but at least I can surf every day.”
Forget the air reverse Back on dry land Christoffer is chatting with a few local surfers while changing into a grey t-shirt saying ‘Hart Knocks’ on the front, which is his artist name. Quickly, he is back to looking like a snowboarder in baggy trousers and winter jacket. Cheeky, he walks to Mark, who is packing his equipment in the car. “Mark, there are three tricks I would have wanted you to have on that little screen of yours. That air reverse would have been worth gold,” Chris says and laughs. With a grin on his face, Mark shrugs his shoulders and reminds Chris that he is an old man. Together, they have a look through the pictures of the day. “That one is awesome! It is awesome! Forget about the air reverse then,” Chris says and pats Mark on the back before they split up, get in their cars and call it a day – a day of surfing in Denmark.

About Collaboration For its first collaboration with Rains, BWGH applies their vision of fashion as a bridge between the street wear codes and the high fashion scene. Designer David Obadia drew inspiration from these two universes to design two models. The first model is impulsive and takes the spirit and energy of street wear with prints on the sleeves, chest and on the back shield. Symbols are references to Paris, Copenhagen and Brooklyn, describing an urban trip between these three fashion centres. The second model is made from a strong fashion orientation and mixes three colours in a design that is inspired by contemporary art and especially the work of the Danish artist Kasper Sonne. Combining BWGH with the clear Scandinavian expression and the unique material quality and feeling of RAINS, the BWGH x RAINS collaboration is about two young and very different brands, coming together in their common enthusiasm for modern and functional fashion.

THE GOLDEN DREAM 40 ISSUE FOUR The golden dream

ISSUE FOUR
In each issue of Rains Journal, you can read a fishing story from the mad, Danish adventurer and fly fisherman, Peter Andreas Christensen. Peter lives in Copenhagen, but spends as much time as possible in far-flung corners of the world trying to catch giant fish with his fly rod. Getting to where those fish live takes him through some pretty dangerous areas, including the muddy backwaters of the Yukon River and the barren wilds of the Canadian Arctic. In a world where most people travel to relax, Peter travels to get in trouble. Easy doesn’t do it.

I n t ro Follow four Danes on a 700-kilometer odyssey through the wildest regions of the Canadian Arctic in search of giant fish, happiness and wonder.
I n search of connec t ion What is fishing really about? Certainly, to catch fish is a central part of the equation. However, fishing’s classic concept of ‘the fish of a lifetime’ is strangely singular, as it rarely happens more than once. Most of the time, less magnificent catches must suffice, and the moment where one might catch the supreme monster of the sea will merely exist in a dreamy future. And what is more, many fish of a lifetime are, let’s face it, only fictitious fables, fuelled by too much bourbon and failure. At times, fishing is a shortcut to a world

deep into the untamed and wondrous. See, the fish of a lifetime is mostly a mythological creature locked in the lush turbulence of oblivion. It can remain there, a ghostlike spirit, forever. To catch it, you must set out to find its tangible counterpart in the material world.
The m usic of t he wil d It is often said that the first thing you notice in a remote and wild place is the silence. As the roar of the Twin Otter’s engines fade, and the plane disappears in the distant horizon, there is no such silence. A subtle beat echoes over the tundra; a humming buzz from a choir of millions of mosquitoes creates an understated base. Rolling waves rhythmically break on the shoreline of the lake. Two chattering ravens and a loon’s unnerving shrieks take turns as the supreme voice in nature’s howl. Whispers of what is left behind and what is to come echoes within. The land extends for as far as the eye can see in all directions, alluring and frightening in its vastness. Maybe we’re in over our heads? On second thought, I’m satisfied with the situation, even if the outcome is uncertain, the route unfamiliar and failure an option. The point is to be in over the head, submerged in this no man’s land normally empty of intruders, and to fight for weeks just to get within casting distance of the creatures of the watery world. The first leg of our trip is a long stretch against the current of a medium-sized river, before we reach a series of lakes, feeding a mighty river that plunges into

by the wild. Maybe there are fishermen in those planes, effortlessly flying directly to where the fish are. I like to think there isn’t. I prefer to cling on to the idea that there are still blanks on the map - that the wild is not just an idea, but a real place that the bold and daring can find if they do their damned hardest.

ISSUE FOUR
MADS NØRGAARD x RAINS
In the previous collaboration between RAINS and Mads Nørgaard, we made a specific style combining the traditional expression of a classic rain jacket with modern and street wear inspired fitting and pockets. This time we have challenged ourselves with a more ‘noisy’ and striking style, consisting of a huge inside graphic print as a suppressing element in the single-colour jacket. The same print style appears on the chest pocket. Combined with new strong fittings in solid rubber material, the jacket sets its own unique standard of material combinations, once again bringing together the best elements of RAINS and Mads Nørgaard.
