DEPAC PHILOSOPHY

2 Transparency of the market? Advantages for the Customer!

?

In the process industry, mechanical seals in pumps, compressors, reactors etc. represent a small but essential contributor to the overall operating reliability and economic efficiency of every piece of equipment.

In this catalogue topics signified with a question mark require detailed analysis.

It must be realized that the interests of machine manufacturers are not always the same as those of their customers. Manufacturers often choose components that are not the best for the application. Reasons for this are purely economic. The spare parts market for the equipment is so lucrative it has created whole industries dedicated to satisfying the “after-market” demand.

mark shall signify alternatives, which you can rest assured, describe not only a technically superior design but also a more economical solution.

In our product range we not only offer the most advanced and efficient seals, but also certain technically questionable In the complexity of production cycles, products due to market demand. interruptions or shut downs of production However, we strongly feel other designs caused by the replacement or repair of are better and more sensible and should single components such as a mechanical be considered if not specified. seal can result in enormous expenses. In this catalogue an exclamation

In this industry it is questionable if true competition exists, which in other industries is the driving force for innovation and development of technically advanced products. How else can it be explained that current industry standards have not incorporated the latest technical advances in seal design.

!

Our market position as innovative specialists in the mechanical seal industry has always been to provide the highest reliability, process safety, and the most economically sound choices through market transparency. This will be evident throughout this catalog. DEPAC developments, such as the stationary mechanical seal, introduced by DEPAC in the early 1980’s, have even been adopted by the internationally respected American Petroleum Institute (API) specifications. DEPAC’s wide range of mechanical seals will convince you, especially if all life cycle costs are calculated, to use them exclusively on a long term basis.

OLD LIABILITIES ARE COSTLY LIABILITIES

3 More pressure, more wear!

unbalanced

Unless a mechanical seal is hydraulically balanced, the full force of the hydraulic pressure present in the process will act on the sealing surface. This is in addition to the necessary spring force, which is already designed into the seal. Therefore, an unbalanced seal will always have additional unnecessary load on the seal faces. This additional face load increases friction, which results in heat and increased wear thus shortening the service life of the seal.

Pressure balancing minimizes your operating costs!

balanced

It has been a known fact in the market for years, that the life expectancy of unbalanced mechanical seals is shorter than those versions that have hydraulic pressure balancing. A number of industries, such as refineries, have specified years ago in API 610 / 682, that ALL mechanical seals should or must be pressure balanced.

Top Quality at the same price! In the past it was common to recommend seals without hydraulic pressure balancing to the process industry, supposedly for reasons of economic efficiency. Statements like “with this pressure you don’t need expensive pressure balancing are well known to all end users. It is difficult to follow this recom-

mendation given by some seal manufacturers and suppliers because the parts required to make up a mechanical seal in balanced or unbalanced designs are basically identical. The only difference is a small step in the seal face. From a manufacturing point of view, this step has no effect on the manufacturing costs and therefore should not effect the sales price.

If a hydraulic pressure balanced seal has less wear and offers a longer service life for the same price, there should be no reason not to change to this technology. This change will result in reduced maintenance and operating costs.

DYNAMIC DESIGN

4 Dynamic Design In a dynamic seal design the spring element is mounted in the dynamic (rotating) portion of the seal.

The following calculation will illustrate the resulting problems:

The various seal and related pump parts all have manufacturing and installation tolerances, e.g. the retaining ring, the spring(s), the face of the stuffing box, the shaft, the housing gasket and gland, and their positions in relation to the shaft axis. The summary of all these tolerances result in the fact that the stationary face of the seal is effectively not at a right angle to the pump shaft. This results in seal misalignment that cannot be avoided.

If a pump operates at 3.000 rpm for 24 hours, the relevant seal components will do the following axial movements:

In a dynamic design where the spring element rotates with the shaft, the rotating face that is set at an angle due to the previously mentioned tolerances, needs to adjust twice per revolution to keep in contact with the stationary face. A back and forth movement of the seal parts result.

3.000 rpm x 2 axial movements per revolution x 60 min./hour x 24 hours/day = 8.640.000 axial movements per day These enormous movements within the mechanical seal parts result in tremendous vibrations reducing the service life of the seal considerably. These movements also groove the shaft-protecting sleeve through fretting, and also accelerate the weakening of the spring(s), which results in the seal faces opening more frequently. All these problems contribute to premature seal failure.

Fretting corrosion of shafts or protective sleeves Dynamic seal designs, with O-Ring, PTFE wedge or similar secondary sealing elements, require shaft protection sleeves. We need to remember that the dynamic secondary sealing element on the sleeve (O-Ring, wedge, V-Ring, etc.) has to move back and forth axially on the shaft twice per revolution in order to keep contact between the seal faces to ensure effective sealing. The sleeve is usually made of stainless steel with approximately 16% chrome content. This chrome content along with oxygen from the air forms a protective passive chrome-oxide layer on the stainless steel surface. The extreme axial movement of the secondary seal, however, polishes this layer off. As a result, the underlying chromium, which is within the stainless steel, again comes in contact with the O2 of the air and forms a new chrome-oxide layer. This same process is obviously continually repeated. There is also the view that this extreme axial move-

ment even prevents the chromium from forming the protective oxide layer at all. Therefore, the stainless steel is subject to a continuous so called fretting corrosion. Whatever the case may be, the result is the same. Significant wear takes place resulting in a groove on the shaft or sleeve. The secondary seal will either develop a leak or get held up so that the seal faces open. Seal failure is inevitable. Please note that even if the seal is still in perfect working condition, the customer is now forced to take the pump or equipment apart in order to replace the sleeve. The seal itself is now only a small factor in the repair. The disturbing fact is that the seal has had a destructive effect on a pump part (sleeve), which, in most cases, is more expensive than the seal itself!

STATIONARY DESIGN

5 Stationary Design In a stationary design the spring element is placed in the stationary part of the mechanical seal. Even for the stationary design, the previously mentioned tolerances of the relevant pump and seal components remain the same. The main difference is that the spring element compensates for the misalignment between the gland and stationary face only once during installation. After this one time adjustment, the seal stands still and runs without additional axial movements. Of course the possibility exists, even with this design, that the seal may “wobble if working in a pump with a bent shaft. Such a remaining but extremely small wobbling movement is negligible and in nearly all cases is compensated for by the elastomer (O-ring) mounted within the seal. This contrasts sharply with the dynamic design, in which 2 axial movements per shaft rotation must occur to keep the seal faces together.

The success and reliability of this design principle was proven a long time ago in other equipment and industries. It has been in use for many years in automobiles, washing machines, aviation, ships, submarines, agitators, desulphurization plants, high-speed pumps, etc. Stationary designed seals have been used in the previously mentioned applications for virtually no other reason than their reliable performance.

The shaft protective sleeve will no longer serve as a wear part when used with stationary seals, thus eliminating the need for replacement. The result is that economic efficiency is improved and savings are realized by avoiding production shut downs, equipment repairs, and eliminating the need to purchase expensive sleeves.

With the use of a stationary mechanical seal design, such as DEPAC Type 191 or 196, there is no dynamic secondary seal on a shaft or sleeve and thus fretting corrosion no longer occurs. Existing sleeves can still be used, but now only as an anti-corrosion device for steel shafts and / or whenever a pump has been designed in such a way that the sleeve also serves as a positioning part for the impeller.

Therefore, it is understandable that mechanical seals with a stationary design are more reliable than those seals with a dynamic design.

6 ISO INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR STANDARDIZATION

Excerpts from DIN 24960

DIN GERMAN INSTITUTE FOR STANDARDS

DIN 24960 In connection with the INTERNATIONAL ORGANIZATION FOR STANDARDIZATION (ISO and their standards (ISO 3069), the GERMAN INSTITUTE FOR STANDARDS issued standard proposals, under DIN 24960, for mechanical seals. These proposals refer to the stuffing box, main dimensions, specifications and codes of materials. The actual design of the seals is not specified.

Single Seal Form U unbalanced

Single Seal Form B balanced

These standards, however, do not represent today’s technological design knowledge in any way. Therefore the selection of seals, according to DIN / ISO, sometimes proceeds according to outdated data, which often leads to early failure of seals and disruption of production.

Double Seal ”BACK TO BACK” Form U unbalanced

The result for the operator is considerably more maintenance work than necessary and naturally costs which could have been avoided. For this reason we show, in comparison to DIN, some important criteria which should be considered when selecting mechanical seals to reduce down times and operating costs dramatically.

DEPAC is one step ahead

Mechanical seals are still being specified, manufactured and installed according to the pressure “balanced” and “unbalanced” principal

To reach an optimal service life, only balanced seals should be used, whenever possible. Balanced seals are not more complicated or expensive to produce and should therefore be available at the same price as unbalanced seals of the same series (DEPAC Type 186, 196).

The use of balanced seals is exclusively referred to with the inclusion of a step on the sleeve or shaft. Due to these specifications actually a second sleeve for balanced seals are essential. These special sleeves are, however, unnecessary.

Balancing can also be achieved by using a stationary design, which does not necessitate a stepped sleeve and / or recess on the shaft or sleeve (DEPAC Type 196).

Dynamic designs are still recommended and are even used as a basis for measurement specifications of stuffing box dimensions.

Stationary seals should always be given priority. The production prices, in most cases, correspond with those of dynamic seals, however, stationary seals offer higher operating reliability (DEPAC Type 196). These seals also fit into those spaces designed for dynamic seals.

DIN specifications still show mechanical seals where the springs are located in the pumped media.

Springs within a slurry media can clog and cause premature failure of the seals. To prevent this, whenever technically possible, we recommend that the spring parts are always arranged outside the pumped media (DEPAC Type 186, 196).

The standard does not mention that many dynamic seals damage the shafts / sleeves which have to be replaced at high cost. Due to this oversight, the number of sleeve manufacturers has flourished at the expense of the customer.

DEPAC recommends that all seals be chosen in such a way that shafts or protective sleeves cannot be damaged. The price differences for such seals will be negligible, but the savings of shafts or sleeves will be enormous. (DEPAC Type 186, 196)

Seals made of several components are still recommended.

Wherever possible, for ease of installation and reduction of installation failures, cartridge designs should be used. The higher price will only be noticed for the initial installation. The following repairs and spare part prices will correspond with component seals.

DIN 24960 shows double seals with the absolutely outdated “Back to Back” design.

To reach optimal operating reliability of double seals it is advisable to choose tandem active stationary cartridge seal designs with double pressure balancing (DEPAC Type 321 series).

The broadening of DIN to DIN 24960 C (cartridge) was drawn up in a most complicated and tedious way.

Seen from an economic point of view the DIN specification has made the production of cartridge seals problematic and therefore uneconomical. DEPAC proves that cartridge seals can be designed at the utmost up-to-date technology and manufactured economically to provide customers with the highest quality at affordable prices (DEPAC Type 321).

According to the norm, the same or similar narrow stuffing boxes are provided for mechanical seals as for mechanical packing.

For the best seal performances the seal chamber should be substantially larger. The API 610 / 682 specifications as well as the new ANSI standards have considered this for some time and are therefore today’s trend setters in regards to technical specifications for mechanical seals.

8 ANSI AMERICAN NATIONAL STANDARD INSTITUTE

ASME AMERICAN SOCIETY OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERS 1962 the first attempt to standardize pumps for the chemical process industry was made.

ASME B73.1 M - 1991 HORIZONTAL END SUCTION CENTRIFUGAL PUMPS FOR CHEMICAL PROCESS INDUSTRIES Naturally, in these specifications the seal parameters are taken into account.

Especially positive:

These efforts were summarized by the American Voluntary Standards (AVS).

ASME B73.1 M – 1991 clearly distinguishes between the installation of packings and of mechanical seals.

1968 AVS was revised and confirmed as ANSI.

The stuffing box dimensions for packings conform with traditional measurements (see fig. 1).

1991 ASME B73.1 M – 1991 was introduced as a revision, which will now be analyzed.

STUFFING BOX for the installation of packings

According to seal requirements, the spaces for installations have grown in size. Sometimes even conical spaces are suggested (see fig. 2 + 3). This development of industrial standards or recommendations are welcome since they can improve the service life of mechanical seals.

Please note: Not all pump manufacturers follow these “Standards”. In fact most manufacturers, especially the larger ones, do not apply the larger seal chambers when supplying mechanical seals. Not every detail of the recommended seal specifications listed in the “Standards” is technically up to date (unbalanced / balanced etc.)

AA – AB x = 7,94mm (5/16”) A05 – A80 x = 9,52mm (3/8”) A90 – A120 x =11,11mm (7/16”)

There are still many old pumps in operation not manufactured in accordance with these latest recommendations. Even the large pump manufacturers still supply seals with stuffing boxes designed for packings. There are also many pumps operating with packings as sealing elements, which the operators would like to convert to seals. Therefore, please take into consideration that seals produced for a seal chamber with a cross section of 19,05 mm (3/4”) can certainly not be used in stuffing boxes with a cross section of 7,94 mm (5/16”) or visa versa. While choosing a mechanical seal, please compare the equipment data accordingly.

Environmental controls, Plan numbers

Applications

Environmental controls are referred to in the ANSI Standard as Plan-numbers. The ANSI / ASME standards list a series of Plan-numbers which are essential for seal applications and performance.

The industry requests service life improvements of seals to avoid costly maintenance work and shut downs. However, often the same industry is not willing to choose the proper seal design and necessary Plan-numbers so that a longer service life can actually be achieved. It would be desirable if this attitude would change.

The use of one or more Plan-number can often extend the service life of mechanical seals drastically. For a specific seal application the consideration of various Plan-numbers might be necessary. (Details see page 10, 11).

DEPAC offers more! With the high technological standard of DEPAC seal designs, especially with the stationary sealing principle, the requirements of the standards are more than satisfied. DEPAC offers many advantages which exceed the standards. These features increase reliability and economic efficiency of mechanical seals considerably.

10 Plan-numbers for mechanical seals

ASME and API recommendations contain a wide range of applications and Plan-numbers. With the use of DEPAC’s high technology and high quality standard of seals, a lot of Plan-numbers are either obsolete or irrelevant. Therefore, only the most important ones are listed here.

ANSI PLAN-Nr. 7311

RECIRCULATION FLUSHING

API Nr. 1, 11

Recirculation Flushing

Recirculation flushing is only recommended for applications where pumping is performed in the vicinity of the liquid’s boiling point. The danger here is that the additional frictional heat causes the medium to evaporate between the seal faces, causing the seal to run dry and subsequently fail.

Customers can of course use DEPAC seals also with other PLAN-No.’s. For an overall evaluation of all PLAN-No.’s, which will help to increase the service life of mechanical seals, we refer to ASME and API recommendations.

The flush should never be introduced perpendicular to the shaft axle, but always in a tangential or axial manner. A base ring should be used as a throttle bush in the seal chamber and the recirculation line should be cooled.

With this plan system the pressure in the seal chamber will be increased. The danger that the volatile medium evaporates is drastically reduced.

ANSI PLAN-Nr. 7332

API Nr. 32

Flushing from an alternative source

FLUSHING FROM AN ALTERNATIVE SOURCE Flushing from an alternative source should, if at all possible, be used to keep a problematic pumped medium (e.g. abrasive solids) out off the seal chamber. The flush medium, which replaces the pumped medium in the seal chamber, should be a cool, clean and lubricating liquid, which is compatible with the pumped medium. The flush should always be introduced tangentially or axially to the shaft, but never perpendicular to

ANSI PLAN-Nr. 7362

API Nr. 62

Quench (in general we only recommend steam or gas)

the shaft. It should also be introduced at a higher pressure (1 to 2 bar / 15 to 30 PSI) than the pump pressure in the stuffing box or seal chamber. Depending on the seal size, the flow of the flush can be reduced to 3 and 10 l/hr (1 to 3 Gall./hr) when using a DEPAC seal. A base bushing and a flow meter will help reach and control the amount of flush needed.

QUENCH For crystallizing media, DEPAC usually recommends a quench of low pressure steam. In rare applications involving low temperatures at the seal faces, dry air or nitrogen can also be applied as a quench to prevent icing. Steam is applied to the atmospheric side of the seal to keep all dynamic parts of the seal moist and warm. This prevents crystals from forming, and those crystals already developed are either dissolved or are removed by the steam from the seal faces. Hard faces should

be used in all of these applications. Due to the gluing effect of some crystals, Silicon Carbide is often not suitable. With the possible sticking effect of the crystals, Silicon Carbide faces can break at the retainer pins when starting the pump. Tungsten Corbide would be recommended for those applications. It should be confirmed that steam is compatible with the pumped medium and does not cause unwanted chemical reactions. Additional quench sealing devices can be applied to the atmosphere if needed.

DOUBLE SEALS with barrier fluid

ANSI PLAN-Nr. 7352

In special cases where the medium is not allowed, under any circumstances, to come in contact with the atmosphere, it is necessary that the barrier liquid pressure be higher than that in the stuffing box or seal chamber. A pressure of 1 to 2 bar (15 to 30 PSI) more than the seal chamber pressure of the pump / equipment is in most cases sufficient.

Barrier fluid for double seals

Therefore, it is recommended that all seals are double pressure balanced. This assures not only optimal process safety but also the most reliable service life.

In any case, only seal designs should be used where the seal faces remain closed, even if the barrier pressure should fail due to process or plant related reasons.

ANSI PLAN-Nr. 7354

API Nr. 52, 54

Barrier fluid for double seals with Thermosyphon-System filling inspection glass

reservoir

DOUBLE SEALS with Thermosyphonsystem When using double seals it is necessary to have a barrier fluid between the two seals in order to lubricate and cool the outer seal. This effect can be accomplished by using a Thermosyphon system.

To ensure good circulation of the barrier fluid, a separate circulating pump (DEPAC TS 50) should be used to assist with the thermosyphon circulation.

It is recommended to keep the barrier fluid at a higher pressure than that of the seal chamber (1 to 2 bar / 15 to 30 PSI).

if specified drainage

ANSI PLAN-Nr. C Heating / Cooling with cooling chamber

HEATING / COOLING Heating or cooling with a jacket is used when the medium in the seal chamber has to be heated or cooled in order to achieve the best possible service life of the seal through temperature control. The heating or cooling jacket should be checked on a regular basis to prevent internal calcium deposits from forming. These deposits act as insulation and reduce or prevent the heating or cooling effect.

It is important that, when using this system, a throttle bushing is mounted in the seal chamber to increase the heating or cooling effect at the seal.

12 API “American Petroleum Institute” API is a part of ANSI “American National Standard Institute”. API describes, outlines and recommends various fundamental criteria of pumps for the petroleum industry. In general, these standard proposals are, at this time, the best for design features and application requirements of mechanical seals. Even though they are intended for the petroleum industry, they are also most suitable and applicable in all other industries. In particular, API indicates that the costs of leakage, sleeve wear, down time and length of service life of equipment using mechanical seals should be taken into account considerably more than the purchase price of a seal. It is pointed out that these extensive API proposals are not necessarily binding for the customer, but can be used as modern basis for purchasing seals. Therefore, no supplier is excluded even if the API criterion is not met. The authors of API thought it important that while purchasing or selecting seals, up to date knowledge and technology should be considered to the advantage of the user.

This file of standard suggestions contains over 120 pages. Therefore, it is understandable that only some of the many details can be mentioned here. A few important details, that are recommended and applicable also to general industries are as follows: ● Large sealing chambers ● Preference for stationary seal designs ● Tandem active double seals ● Pressure balance ● Preference for cartridges ● Slotted glands ● Additional safety seals ● Springs and bellows of Hastelloy C material ● SiSiC reaction bounded silicon carbide (DEPAC SC) as standard and SSIC sintered silicon carbide (DEPAC SSIC) for special use only ● Tungsten carbide with nickel binder (DEPAC TC) ● To seal media containing solids the face combination SiSiC (DEPAC SC) versus tungsten carbide (DEPAC TC) should be preferred Out of the few above mentioned recommendations, it is obvious that DEPAC’s first developments of stationary seals, that DEPAC brought to the market in the early 80’s, were at that time very far advanced. Today the internationally respected API specifications still recommend DEPAC’S long standing design philosophy as industry standards.

14 THE PROBLEM There is seemingly an endless list of chemicals and media, which have to be sealed. A typical question the customer asks the seal manufacturer is: “what or which seal is recommended for the product “XYZ”? No seal manufacturer can possibly know all media and medium variations. Nevertheless, many seal manufacturers want to impress customers and publish long lists of chemicals with corresponding seal recommendations.

The ideal liquid will not affect the performance of the seal in a negative way. It should be cool, clean and lubricating. Under these conditions, any stationary seal can achieve a reliable and good service life. Unfortunately, there are only a few “ideal” media. Therefore, it must be considered how the various characteristics of liquids will have a negative effect on the seal. Then the decision can be made how to feasibly avoid difficulties at the seal, change the characteristics of the liquids, or at least minimize the effects on the seal significantly.

Plan numbers

This, however, is completely irrelevant and even dangerous to the end-user, since a 10 % change in concentration or a temperature difference of 10 °C can produce a completely new behavioral pattern of the media, which in turn can have an adverse effect on the performance of the seal.

To achieve these objectives the following help in form of environmental controls, “Plan numbers”, (see also pages 10 and 11) are readily available: PLAN numbers

ANSI

It must also be recognized that there are innumerable blending possibilities or additives, which can result in a dramatic change in the behavioral pattern of the basic chemical.

This is practically impossible! How can the end user be helped in making his own selection of the proper seal or materials?

API

Double seal with thermosyphon-system No. 7354 No. 52, 54 Heating / cooling

First, due to its reliability, a stationary mechanical seal should be chosen. Then the right materials and Plan numbers are to be selected which enable the seal to survive in the medium and reach the proper service life. DEPAC takes a new direction to simplify the additional selection process and this is that the criteria should be evaluated according to the general behavior of the various liquids.

Therefore, the question is not which liquid needs to be sealed, but rather what characteristics does the liquid have and how do they affect the seal?

If a medium contains solids but is otherwise chemical neutral, cool and lubricating, then it is irrelevant what the name of the medium or the solids are. What is crucial is that the solids may penetrate the seal faces and subsequently destroy them. a) FLUSHING PLAN No. 7332 with base bushing Despite other criteria, it is a basic requirement to keep the solids away from the seal. An external flushing with Plan number 7332 in combination with a base bushing should be used. For face materials, wear resistant materials (e.g. silicon carbide / tungsten carbide) should be selected. If, despite the small amount of barrier fluid required (3 to 10 ltr./hr., 1 to 3 Gall./hr.), none is available or prohibited in the process, then only a double seal can be used. b) DOUBLE SEAL PLAN No. 7352 / 7354 Tandem active double pressure balancing and higher barrier fluid pressure should be specified. c) If case a) and b) are not possible then a single seal with hard faces is the last alternative. If so, then one must accept a shorter and uncontrollable service life.

To make the selection procedure simple, only 9 different media characteristics or equipment criteria have to be considered: 1) Solids 2) Crystallizing 3) Sticking / hardening 4) Vaporizing / gaseous 5) Extreme temperatures 6) Dangerous / hazardous 7) High pressures 8) Aggressive chemicals 9) Special conditions of the machinery

With crystallizing media it is also irrelevant what the name of the fluid is, it is important only why or how it crystallizes. Fluids can crystallize, for example, if they come in contact with the atmosphere or when the temperature changes. If this happens, crystals will develop at the atmospheric side of the seal faces. At this point the crystals build up and push the faces apart, causing the seal to fail.

SELECTION OF MECHANICAL SEALS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONTROLS

15 The most important principle for crystallizing media is that for all sealing faces in contact with the medium, hard and durable materials such as Tungsten Carbide and Silicon carbide must to be used. Brittle materials, e.g. silicon carbide, should however, despite their hardness, be avoided if the crystals have also some bonding or sticking effect. To avoid the opening of the faces due to the formation of crystals, one of the following possibilities can be selected. a) FLUSHING PLAN No. 7332 with base bushing In this case the crystallizing liquid in the seal chamber is replaced by a non crystallizing liquid flush (3 to 10 Ltr/hr., 1 to 3 Gall./hr.). b) QUENCH (steam) PLAN No. 7362 A warm and moist atmosphere is introduced to the outside of the seal face by the use of low-pressure steam. This will prevent the formation of crystals, or in the case of already formed crystals the steam will flush them away. c) DOUBLE SEAL PLAN No. 7352, 7354 If a) and b) are not possible or allowed, the possibility of using a double seal should be evaluated. d) Are a) to c) not feasible, again only a single seal can be used with hard faces. No optimal or predictable service life, however, can be achieved.

3) Sticking / Hardening fluids The name of the medium is again irrelevant, what is important however, is how and why sticking and hardening of the medium takes place. If a medium hardens due to contact with the atmosphere or when the temperature changes, one has to make sure that the seal does not come in contact with the atmosphere or a certain temperature is kept. To achieve this, there are the following possibilities: a) FLUSHING PLAN No. 7332 with base bushing

c) HEATING / COOLING PLAN No. C, QUENCH PLAN No. 7362 If for example, temperature changes cause the medium to stick or harden, one has to make sure that the temperature at the seal is controlled in such a way that sticking and hardening becomes impossible. Here Plan No. C is recommended. In any case, tungsten carbide faces have to be used. This is because residue of the sticky medium between the seal faces bond the faces together. Brittle materials such as silicon carbide do not resist the torsion stresses and often crack at the retainer pins, especially with repeated start-ups of the pump or equipment. If there are other reasons for sticking and hardening, the plan numbers have to be assessed and chosen accordingly.

4) Evaporating or gaseous media The temperature has to be lowered or a cool, lubricating and clean liquid applied to the seal. The alternatives are: a) FLUSHING PLAN No. 7322 with base bushing b) HEATING / COOLING PLAN No. C c) DOUBLE SEAL PLAN No. 7352 / 7354

5) Media at extreme temperatures The alternatives are repeated: a) FLUSHING PLAN No. 7322 with base bushing b) DOUBLE SEAL PLAN No. 7352 / 7354

6) Hazardous Media The operator should always know the level of danger involved with a medium pumped. There are general directives, statutory orders and by-laws that must be followed to determine what is hazardous, for example in Germany the „TEA-Luft“. In those cases the customer or OEM has to consider which logical and statutory directives are suitable to ensure maximum protection of man, animal and environment. The consideration always has to focus on ensuring that no hazardous medium can get into the environment. It is possible to avoid the use of a seal completely by using an electro-magnetic pump. However, this has its disadvantages. Electro-magnetic pumps have very high power consumption and cannot be used in every media. They are also not available in all sizes. If mechanical seals are to be used, a DOUBLE SEAL with PLAN No. 7352 or 7354 must be applied.

7) Media with extreme pressure For this application either a specially designed seal must be offered, or one considers the use of a DOUBLE SEAL to achieve a step by step reduction of the pressure from the seal chamber to the atmosphere (PLAN No. 7352 or 7354).

8) Extremely aggressive chemicals First of all it is important to choose materials that are resistant to the specific medium. Otherwise the selection of Plan No. follow the above described criteria.

c) SPECIAL SEALS Special seals can be developed and offered by the seal manufacturer after discussing all relevant or required details with the customer. In all cases, seal materials, especially those of the secondary seals eg. O-Rings, must be chosen according to the operational temperature, which includes the frictional heat.

9) Special machinery For machines with either high shaft speeds, large shaft diameters or large shaft movements the seals should be selected accordingly (e.g. DEPAC Type 325/365). When conditions are too extreme and standard seals are not sufficient, then special seal designs become necessary.

Also in this case this plan number can be applied, which is always the ideal choice for the seal. b) DOUBLE SEAL PLAN No. 7352 / 7354 The barrier fluid used for the double mechanical seal should be at a higher pressure than the medium pressure in the seal chamber. The barrier fluid separates the atmosphere from the inner seal, which is in contact with the pumped medium. The temperature of the barrier fluid can also be controlled if needed.

All media to be sealed by mechanical seals fall into one of the above described criteria or a combination of them. In case there is a combination, each criteria has to be considered separately. The result is not only the correct mechanical seal but also the required environmental controls.

CHEMICAL PROCESSING INDUSTRY

16 DEPAC SPECIAL SEALS for chemical / pharmaceutical industries In these industries, a large range of sealing problems exists, which demand specially designed mechanical seals. For most applications DEPAC offers a standard seal. The remaining applications are individually engineered to provide a custom made solution. This guarantees a high degree of operating and processing reliability. The following is an example of a special custom made solution:

Application A special machine has to be sealed where pressurized gas is blown through a hollow shaft into the product for atomization.

The DEPAC solution Mechanical Seal Type 320-S-50 This seal has three sets of sealing faces. The first set of faces serves to seal the barrier fluid from the atmosphere. The second set seals the barrier fluid from the gas and the third set seals the gas from the medium in the equipment. The gas is blown between seal sets No. 2 and No. 3 at high pressure and then enters the process through holes in the seal sleeve and through the hollow shaft.

The problem For this special application a triple seal had to be designed.

18 DEPAC Stationary parts – Extremely versatile! A mechanical seal consists of several components such as the rotating part, the stationary part and the gland. The replacement market offers, besides the actual seals, a variety of glands in different designs and measurements for the equipment in use. Taking this into account and to offer the customer an alternative to his existing parts,

DEPAC offers a large range of stationaries. The selection of an optimal mechanical seal asks for a corresponding selection of the right stationary.

DIN 24960 Designation

After the selection of the optimal stationary, it is then possible to select a new gland or adapter, which are listed on page 21 to 23.

GLANDS / ADAPTERS

21 DEPAC GLANDS / ADAPTERS – A program for all Applications! Glands must be selected according to the chosen or existing stationary part of the component mechanical seal.

To fit or use DEPAC glands with other stationeries, their measurements should be checked and compared carefully.

DEPAC offers a complete range of glands and adapters for various DEPAC stationaries, as well as for already existing ones.

For cartridge seals, which already have 1/4” NPT connections their placement or direction is not always optimal for the feed lines. Therefore, DEPAC offers an adjustable adapter, Type 480, for easier and more practical connection possibilities.

The market offers an obscure number of different stationaries. Therefore, it is impossible to provide adapters and glands for all existing parts. DEPAC offers adapters and glands, predominantly, for DEPAC stationaries.

Some cartridge seals from other manufacturers provide no connection for a flush.

On the other hand, sometimes design features prohibit flush connections on the glands. In order to also offer flush possibilities in these instances, DEPAC can supply a special tangential flush adapter – Type 490, which is placed between the pump housing and the seal gland. The special feature of this adapter is, that it has a single 1/4” NPT connection which guarantees tangential flushing for either direction of shaft rotation.

THIS IS CONVINCING! DYNAMIC unbalanced seals are manufactured for general applications. Typically, OEM companies buy these seals in large quantities. The selection of one or the other design depends on the preference of the OEM, the application and the mounting requirements of the customer.

TYPE 159 ● PTFE (graphite)-wedge ● Direction of rotation independent

Important to know is that dynamic mechanical seals with an O-ring or wedge construction can damage the shaft through their axial movement. Therefore these seals should only be used in connection with shaft protecting sleeves. Mechanical seal designs containing multiple springs guarantee a more even face load, avoiding unnecessary vibrations within the equipment. Stepped sleeves make the positioning of seals easier. If this is not possible, retainer rings set screwed to the shaft / sleeve are used for proper positioning. As far as technically possible, stationary faces should be flexibly mounted to dampen general shock and vibrations within the equipment. This should preferably be done with an elastomer (O-Ring, cup, etc.).

TYPE 140

Pressure balanced seals have a lower face load and therefore lower friction which in turn results in less wear of the faces. The seal lasts longer.

● ● ● ● ●

If only a small space in the stuffing box is available, an outside mounted seal design is the solution. Additionally there are no metal parts that come in contact with the medium. For highly aggressive media this seal (Type 140) is an economical alternative to expensive special alloy seals. Welded bellow seal, Type 200, and multi-spring seal, Type 186, have a self cleaning effect if used in media containing solids. Solids cannot build up and the secondary seal (O-ring) moves “away” from the solids during face wear.

TYPE 191

Stationary seals from DEPAC are all pressure balanced.

● Mechanical seal for any open stuffing box ● No special gland necessary ● Mechanical seal as alternative to packing

Due to this design with lower face load and corresponding reduced wear, a reliable, longer service life is offered. With all of the shown seal designs DEPAC offers more reliability in every seal application. Critical applications, such as hot water or media, which contain abrasives or other solids, are effectively and economically sealed with these alternatives. Stop sleeve wear and short seal life caused by dynamic, non-pressure balanced seals. Use DEPAC stationary seals!

TYPE 270

World wide the preference and use of Cartridge seals is ever increasing.

● O-Ring design ● 1/8” NPT connections for flush and quench (up to Ø 70 mm - 2 3/4”) ● Extremely short design

The simplicity of installation and removal is convincing. Installation difficulties and mistakes are largely avoided, also making this feature a deciding factor. Since wear and spare part costs are the same, total running costs are the same as for component seals. DEPAC offers a wide range of cartridge seals. The various alternatives are based on the general design details with O-Rings, rolled bellows or welded bellows as secondary sealing devices. Most glands are produced using the investment casting method, which combines high accuracy and excellent surface quality with cost effective production. This results in very competitive sales prices. The stationary design principle, which DEPAC developed for the process industry in the early ‘80’s, offers the highest reliability in the most difficult seal applications.

For some exceptionally small pump designs, only very small SB cross sections are available. Therefore, it is essential to compare D1 with the relevant pump dimensions. The distance D1 to the SB - ID should be no less than approximately 1 mm (0,039”) in the radius. To avoid axial movement of seals on the shaft / sleeve under pressure conditions at or above 15 bar (225 PSI), DEPAC recommends drilling the shaft / sleeve where the set screws are to be tightened.

TYPE 270 P

No mechanical seal lasts forever. To increase sealing reliability sometimes double seals have been installed. However, double seals cannot be considered as “safety” seals, since both seals are installed at the same time and thus have the same running time. No manufacturer can guarantee that the second seal will hold after the first one has failed.

● O-Ring design ● Alternatives – Welded bellows TYPE 296 P – Rolled bellows TYPE 299 P

Even the “Disaster Bushings” required by the oil industry (API) offer no leakage protection after a seal failure. Through controllable leakage, DEPAC’s safety seals guarantee a high level of process safety even after a possible seal failure. The emergency seal can be adjusted to an acceptable leakage rate and operated until the next planned shut down. In extreme conditions, where a double seal is required, an additional safety seal can be offered as well. The extra charge for a DEPAC safety seal has no relation to the costs occurred due to an unscheduled production shut down!

● Rolled bellows design

In some pumps, only a very short free length is available from the SB face to the bearing housing. Therefore, it is essential to compare L1 and L4 with the related pump dimensions.

The distance D1, D2 to the SB-ID should be no less than approximately 1 mm (0,039”) in the radius. Alternative designs with larger packing cross sections and / or packing rings are available on request as specials. Double cartridge seals incorporating this special DEPAC safety feature are available as well.

THIS IS CONVINCING! With the use of cartridge seals most installation difficulties, especially with the many seal components of double seals, can be avoided. No more surprises of negative leak tests after the seal is installed in the equipment. The cartridge is assembled in the factory or workshop and can be tested for leakage, before it is installed in the equipment. Attention should always be given to ensure that tandem or tandem active double seals are used. With this installation system, the medium to be sealed will be thrown away from the inner seal faces by the centrifugal force of the shaft. The faces stay as clean as possible. The DEPAC double seal designs have tandem action and, with their stationary design, guarantee utmost reliability for operating and service life.

TYPE 321 ● A development out of DEPAC’s long standing technology of stationary double cartridge seals

TYPE 322 ● Patentent covered design for circulation support of barrier fluid ● Barrier fluid shroud ● 322 Z for small stuffing box cross sections Dshaft 1“ – 1 3/8“

PLEASE NOTE

● Patentent covered design for circulation support of barrier fluid

For smaller SB cross sections Type 322 or 322 Z are usually used.

● Barrier fluid shrouds under inner and outer faces

If, however, adequate SB cross sections are available Type 323 would be recommended as a standard seal. Standard glands for sizes up to Ø 70 mm (2 3/4”) are available in an economy version. Above Ø 70 mm (2 3/4”) the glands are round.

Glands

To avoid axial movement of seal parts on the shaft / sleeve under pressure conditions at or above 15 bar (225 PSI), DEPAC recommends drilling the shaft / sleeve where the set screws are to be tightened.

TYPE 345 ● Single seal

THIS IS CONVINCING! The latest addition to the DIN 24960 C is a recommendation for cartridge seals to the chemical process industry. It recommends mainly the design advantages which DEPAC already offered in their cartridge program in the early 80’s. For this reason DEPAC is able to offer the customer the most experience when it comes to this mechanical seal sector. The modular system offers the ability to change from a single to a double seal by simply adding the outside seal faces. A pumping screw incorporated in the seal sleeve allows for positive circulation of the barrier fluid, as well as flushing and cooling the faces with the largest amount of fluid possible.

● Especially suitable for change over from packing to mechanical seal ● O-Ring design ● Extremely short installation length ● 1/4” NPT flush and quench connections ● To fit SB of 7,94 mm (5/16”) cross sections

THIS IS CONVINCING! The ANSI / ASME B73.1 M... divides seal chambers into 2 categories. For packings the use of a tight stuffing box is recommended and for seals a “big bore” seal chamber is recommended. Many customers who are still using packing would like to change over to seals. For these applications DEPAC offers the standard seal Type 301 (see also pages 36 and 37). This seal will fit into the smallest standard stuffing boxes of 7,94 mm (5/16”) cross sections. For the use of seals in “big bore” seal chambers, DEPAC offers a variety of seal design variations with O-Ring, welded bellows and rolled bellows. For further information on these designs please see the corresponding pages.

For measurements see page 36/37

POWER PLANTS

48 DEPAC SPECIAL SEALS for the power plant industry Application

The DEPAC solution

In coal fired power plants the cleaning (washing) of exhaust gas takes place in flue gas de-sulphurization plants. Within this process lime milk is used that naturally has to be pumped within the process system. The sealing of these liquids is most difficult and presents great demands on the seals.

TYPE 370-S-60 The seal shown is a double seal design that incorporates bearings according to the standard DEPAC Type 370. It also includes an additional, in series, safety standstill seal.

Problem definition Special difficulties arise when mechanical seals are fitted into pumps that are connected to large tanks used for lime milk preparation or reconditioning. A pump shut down has to be avoided under any circumstance since it can result in a total plant shut down. For this reason seals must have a safety seal, standstill seal, which can be activated at seal failure or time of seal replacement.

In addition to the safety standstill seal there is also an O-Ring loaded seal face on the product side. This achieves a rough pre-sealing that is independent from abnormal“radial shaft movements.

TYPE 326 THIS IS CONVINCING! Especially with exceptionally large pumps, agitators, mixers, autoclaves, filters, colanders, fermenters and similar equipment with large shafts, the shafts tend to have considerable deflections. This applies to axial, radial and angular movements. Standard seals cannot handle these extreme conditions. In the past, additional bearings have often been integrated in the seal to stabilize the shafts. These designs are not only significantly more expensive, but will also fail immediately if the bearings are damaged due to wear or overload. DEPAC offers new seal designs with “floating” faces, which will absorb the extreme movement transferred to the seal and will keep the face loading constant, independent from the shaft movements. The reliability of these seal applications have therefore improved drastically.

54 DEPAC SPECIAL SEALS for the oil industry The large variety of applications in the oil industry requires special sealing solutions to guarantee the highest degree of operating safety. Again the DEPAC experience is asked for.

The Application For the shown example, the existing shaft and sleeve design was needed for the impeller mounting and positioning, and therefore could not be changed. A second difficulty was the short installation space on the outside of the sealing chamber.

The DEPAC Solution Type 306-S-135 To avoid an uncontrollable plant shut down, it was a special customer requirement to have an adjustable packing set as a backup or safety seal. DEPAC designed the seal accordingly, incorporating additional features like external flush possibility into a cartridge design, for ease of installation and maintenance.

56 Introduction

DIAGRAM

The DEPAC TS Thermosyphon system is a simple and reliable support system for double seals. It can be used with DEPAC double seals as well as those of other manufacturers.

PAPER, STEEL, FOOD PROCESSING INDUSTRY

58 DEPAC SPECIAL SEALS for the paper, steel and food-processing industry The Application

The DEPAC Solution

In many of the above industries, certain applications require special sealing devices, often called hydraulic or rotating couplings.

Due to the extreme temperatures of appr. 280 째C (536 째F) to 300 째C (572 째F) elastomer materials had to be avoided. This was achieved by the use of Hastelloy C rolled bellows.

The Problem Definition If hot oil or cooling fluids are used for heating or cooling a hollow rotating shaft, extensive experience is needed to be able to offer reliable seals for these uncommon applications.

To guarantee the optimal service reliability, DEPAC designed this seal arrangement also on the stationary design principle.

INSTALLATION

59 Installation

Set screws

During installation it is imperative that all the seal parts For set screws, which tighten the seal to the shaft or are kept clean and free of dirt. Dirt particles on the sleeve, and for connecting bolts, which tighten the seal faces or O-Rings can cause instant leakage and seal gland to the equipment housing, an anti looseneven damage the seal faces. ing agent such as Loctite 241 should be applied. All DEPAC seal shipments contain installation and operating instructions with corresponding drawings for To avoid axial movement of seals on the shaft or the seal. Operating instructions should obviously be sleeve under pressure conditions at or above 15 bar read and appropriate measures should be taken before (225 PSI), DEPAC recommends drilling the shaft / installing a seal. Most important is that the installation dimensions are checked in comparison to the related sleeve where the set screws are to be tightened. Please ask your DEPAC representative for further dimensions of the equipment. information.

Springs Attention! If single springs (conical springs) are used, the direction of spring winding has to correspond with the direction of the shaft rotation (exeptions are rubber bellow seals). For this reason it is important at the time of seal selection, to check if the seal’s direction of rotation is dependent or independent. The following drawings clearly show the necessary spring winding direction in relation to the direction of the shaft rotation.

View from motor side Shaft rotation: right

Corners O-Rings or other elastomers, which for installation reasons need to slide over edges, are very sensitive and should be protected. Therefore all edges on sleeves or shaft recesses, over which seals are to be pushed, have to be clean of burrs and should be chamfered to no less than 25 to 30 ° x 3 mm (0,12”).

Face protection Single seals are supplied by DEPAC with a special wax protective coating on the faces which should be removed completely. The wax leaves an oily film on the face, which is useful when starting the seal. However, no dust or dirt particles should be allowed to stick to the film. This can cause leakage or damage to the faces.

Welded bellows / Rolled bellows Please note that welded and rolled bellows seals are not to be over compressed during installation! If this happens, a pressure set occurs which reduces the calculated spring rate and causes the seal to fail. These seals have to be assembled with a mounting tool, which bridges the bellows. This enables the thrust applied to the seal during installation to be transferred to the connecting part without damaging the bellows. Mounting tools are either delivered with the seal or should be prepared accordingly.

Secondary seals

Double seals

For the lubrication of secondary seals like O-Rings, etc. silicon grease or silicon oil should be used during installation. Conventional mineral oils are to be avoided since some elastomers might not be resistant to them. Special care should be taken that rubber bellow seals are to be installed with soapy water as opposed to oil or grease.

It is of utmost importance that the barrier chamber is vented. DEPAC seals of the series 321, 326 and 365 have special venting devices incorporated, which should be used accordingly. In all situations, dry running of the seal must be avoided since this would result in seal failure due to overheating.

Spring winding direction: right During installation the seal / spring should be pushed onto the shaft / sleeve with a right turning motion

Left winding direction Left shaft rotation

Right winding direction right shaft rotation

If possible, a set of small springs equally spaced around the seal face should be preferred and selected. Please also note that sinus, “super sinus” or waver springs are only available with a relative steep spring rate. With the wear of the seal faces, the seal quickly loses the spring force it needs and therefore its potential service life is artificially reduced.

MINING INDUSTRY

64 DEPAC SPECIAL SEALS for the mining industry Description Special drilling machines used in tunnel and mining applications are subjected to the most extreme service conditions. For the shown example, the required sealing system was to be integrated with the bearing and was to allow high pressure cooling water to be injected into the drill head at certain segments only. The water was to be introduced under pressure of 70 bar (1050 PSI) during continues operation. The whole system, including bearing and segment flushing, needed to be developed.

The DEPAC solution DEPAC designed the complete system which met all the complex requirements.

Between the inner and outer sealing set, water with a pressure of up to 70 bar (1050 PSI) is sealed. The water is dispersed between the two seals and then distributed over 16 holes in the rotating disc. As the drawing shows, a spring loaded sealing segment controls the flow path which allows water to flow only through 30 % of the holes at one time. The result is that at any rotary position of the drill head, the liquid exits at the same angle. An additional benefit of this solution is the ability to “blind” mount the seal with an axial housing position within a ± 2 mm (0,08”) tolerance.
