ra Rajeev Atha Architecture, a junction where society, culture and tradition converge. It has been my inspiration to change and enhance the society through architecture by bridging the contemporary and traditions aspects of architecture. Studying architecture and later practicing it, has provided me with the sensitivity required to work in the social and cultural aspects of design. This has been a driving factor to create resilient societies by blending sustainable design practices with socially driven designs, which has been a driving force in my style of architecture design.

R.A.D. River Arts District (R.A.D.) is an interdisciplinary project that addresses rural challenges at multiple scales. The site of our investigation is Austin, MN, a city that has grappled with persistent challenges such as flooding, demographic changes and loss of cultural identity. Recognizing these ongoing issues we’ve developed a framework that reimagines Austin’s identity as a vibrant and inclusive cultural hub that repositions people’s relationship with water and the built environment.

The City of Austin has been struggling with finding their cultural identity. There have been buildings in the city which have been demolished to make way for newer buildings and infrastructure. This has resulted in loss of historical and cultural values for Austin. With this project, we are proposing the city of Austin to retain their assets, simultaneously providing them an option to turn the value of these assets through the process of adaptation, repurposing and restablishing a renewed identity for the city. The model of “Creative Economy has been identified in order to create a synergy between the built environment and the society. This model identifies arts and culture as amenities which feeds to create a better quality of life for Austin, MN.

Terp Ballroom is rebranded as Terp Arts & Incubator Center, through repurposing, adapting the existing structure and elevating its value. Terp Ballroom was established in 1938 and has been vacant since 1967. This creates an opportunity for us to tap into the identity of the Terp throughout its history and proposing a destination for artists, entrepreneurs, concerts, and families with the brewery acting as the catalyst. In the process of designing, we have taken into consideration at the cultural assets of Austin, along with annual events such as Artist for Austin, Artworks Festivals, etc. The re-established and reformed Terp Arts & Incubator Center would be a prime destination to host these events. An extension to the Terp is proposed keeping the exiting building in consideration. The materiality shows strong distinction between the existing building and its addition is seen on the facade. Iconic feature of the terp such as the canopy is retained.

Water Management is a critical part of the project as a measure for flood mitigation. As a part of the city infrastructure, the adaptation proposed for Terp Arts and Incubator Center would be required to manage its own water. The basic system for this management involves capturing water from the roofs which is then treated for building use. Surface runoff water collected in the storm chambers is also collected for the purpose of irrigation. Excess water from the cisterns would be directed to the nearest rain garden or landscape on the site. Roof gardens are an integral part of this system that contribute to the water cycle by adding evapotranspiration of rainwater. Implementing this management on a building/site scale could impact the flood levels in Austin.

Artist’s Bungalow An inspiration for a piece of art is what an artist yearns for. From the noisy city to a peaceful countryside, with a keen eye an artist finds the inspiration and interprets it in his own way. Similarly, an artist from the city has expressed his/her desires to move to the countryside for remainder of his/her life with his/her spouse. The brief provided by the artist is comprehensive which involves a small gallery space, a studio workspace within the house, a living room, dining space, kitchen, and two bedrooms – master bedroom and guest bedroom. The site that has been selected by the artist is adjoining a river which can provide soothing sounds with an instant connection to nature and environment.

The two distinctive functions that the artist has asked for namely, his house and his workspace that includes a studio and a gallery. The concept for this project revolves around the integration of both the functions within one building at the same time have their individual identities. The phenomenon of unification through separation is the base of the concept which is expressed through the concept development. The functions are separated by the circulation of the building but unified by the structure itself.

Puerto Rico In January 2019, a group of interdisciplinery students from the University of Minnesota’s College of Design, Humphery School of Public Affairs and the Institute on the Environment converged to conduct a research regarding energy transition systems of post Hurricane Maria Puerto Rico. This travel experience gave students insites of design, architecture and its relation to socio-cultural belonging of a community, and place. An experience which expressed how different professions provide architecture with questions and solutions. The study abroad course ended with an individual research project, “Passive Methods of Design Based on Puerto Rico’s History and Culture.”

5JVPD 5,JVPD is a residential project of an extravagant scale. A bungalow residence for the client of a joint family is proposed in the existing site at Juhu, Mumbai. Juhu being one of the most sought after neighborhoods in Mumbai, this project had to be unique and needed to stand out from the surrounding buildings. The client has a family of two married sons, parents, and himself with a requirement of duplex for each of them along with a fitness level. This project was strategized in a way where every one of them had their own privacy at the same time were connected as well with each other. Unification with separation concept was implemented for this project. The site is a small parcel of land at the crossroads of two major roads. The height wasn’t a restriction for the project. A view to the sea was also achieved from the top floors of the building.

The design was developed with cross ventilation playing a vital role to locate the opening and their sizes. However openings also invited heat. Hence, a decision to implement screen which would cool the air as it passes thrrough the building because of its perforations. This also gave the user an added control over the natural elements and micro climate within and around the building.

30

The selection of materials played a vital role in achieving a sustainable building. In case of this project, due to its close proximity to the sea, concrete was the most favourable material. However, for the screens, a light weight metal, zinc which was obtained as a by-product of pharmaceutical companies was implemented. A green wall was added on parking levels between ground and habitable floors which extended the existing landscape vertically. This not only added towards the greener approach to the project but it also served as a mode to reduce the urban heat bubble. Sensitivity towards the design, selection of materials, optimization of energy consumption pushed this project to have a benchmark in the neighborhood for a modern-vernacular fusion for architecture design.
