Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill approved!

T

he Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, has approved the proposal of the Ministry of Finance to introduce the Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018 in Parliament. The Bill would help in laying down measures to deter economic offenders from evading the process of Indian law by remaining outside the jurisdiction of Indian courts. The cases where the total value involved in such offences is Rs.100 crore or more, will come under the purview of this Bill. The Bill is expected to re-establish the rule of law with respect to the fugitive economic offenders as they would be forced to return to India to face trial for scheduled offences. This would also help the banks and other financial institutions to achieve higher recovery from financial defaults committed by such fugitive economic offenders, improving the financial health of such institutions. It is expected that the special forum to be created for expeditious confiscation of the proceeds of crime, in India or abroad, would coerce the fugitive to return to India to submit to the jurisdiction of Courts in India to face the law in respect of scheduled offences.

Salient features of the Bill: i.

Application before the Special Court for a declaration that an individual is a fugitive economic offender;

ii.

Attachment of the property of a fugitive economic offender;

iii.

Issue of a notice by the Special Court to the individual alleged to be a fugitive economic offender;

iv.

Confiscation of the property of an individual declared as a fugitive economic offender resulting from the proceeds of crime;

v.

Confiscation of other property belonging to such offender in India and abroad, including benami property;

vi.

Disentitlement of the fugitive economic offender from defending any civil claim; and

•

vii. An Administrator will be appointed to manage and dispose of the confiscated property under the Act.

razil Minerals, announced that a new field in one of its properties in the Jequitinhonha River valley in Brazil is beginning to produce gold and diamonds. The Company is actively removing alluvium-type mineralized material found after excavating 60 feet deep in a dry area. Every truckload of material processed in the modular recovery unit operated by the Company has yielded fine gold. The concentration of gold obtained from each production run has varied, which is expected from an alluvium-type deposit, and ranged from economically feasible to highly attractive.

Additional production data will allow the calculation of a gold concentration average for the deposit. Gem-quality diamonds have also been recovered from sectors of this deposit. A photograph of the mining area follows. As the dry season begins next month, the Company also plans to execute drilling campaigns on several targets. Some of the drilling will be near the current gold and diamond mining area, looking for additional deposits. Other high potential targets to be evaluated will come from claims owned by the Company and ranked from within the BMIX Mineral Bank, its repository of properties. Brazil Minerals intends to prioritize evaluation of its new lithium claim. Additionally, the Company is actively analyzing other high-quality claims in various minerals to add to the BMIX Mineral Bank.

The only 100-facet diamond

T

he revolutionary cut of the Cento diamond is an exclusive patent. With 100 facets, almost the double of a standard cut, it captures and reflects the light through a process which is much longer and more complicated than that used with other diamonds. The result is a veritable kaleidoscope of lights in a floral pattern defined by the shape of the 100 facets. Roberto Coin is a name that implies moments of joy and excitement, a name that means stylistic originality and design in any language, there for you to discover in all of its many expressions. 100 is the number that symbolizes perfection and completion; the virtues that Roberto Coin payed homage to with the diamond he launched in 2003 after years of research and experimentation with the best experts and craftsmen in the field. The name of the diamond is Cento which in Italian means 100. For the first time in history, a diamond was cut with 100 facets instead of the typical 57. The light it radiated from within was like none that had ever been seen before. Only the diamonds whose color and purity make them the most precious and rare are chosen to become Cento diamonds. Their infinite brilliance must show the world all of the magic and perfection of nature. n Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 24

nhorgenta Munich strengthens its profile in the “Fine Jewelry” segment. 25 new exhibitors will present finest jewelry of the highest quality in Hall B1. This is an increase of 14 percent compared to the previous year. Fine jewelry continues to be sought-after all over the world. This trend is reflected in the demand for booth spaces at Inhorgenta Munich. “We have received as many inquiries in the “Fine Jewelry” segment as hardly ever before”, reports Stefanie Mändlein, Exhibition Director of Inhorgenta Munich. “The strong demand also results from the fact that we have continuously further developed our concept in close cooperation with the exhibitors in the last few years.” All spaces in Hall B1 are occupied. Visitors of Inhorgenta Munich may thus look forward to an increasingly diversified “Fine Jewelry” segment. Inhorgenta Munich is offering new possibilities of presentation to its exhibitors. In addition, manufactories are provided with new opportunities to present selected pieces of jewelry on what is referred to as “Design Isles”. Furthermore, the Jewelry Shows at which professional models present selected pieces of jewelry on the catwalk, have been a firm component of the hall for two years now. “We are pleased that the shows are being so well received by the exhibitors. They are an attraction for visitors and media representatives alike”, says Stefanie Mändlein. The face of the forthcoming third show will be Zoe Helali. Namdeb holdings seeks buyer

N

amdeb Holdings, a 50/50 joint venture between the Government of the Republic of Namibia and De Beers Group, announced it is to seek a buyer for its Elizabeth Bay mine to secure its long-term future. The mine was commissioned in 1991 and is located along the southwestern coast of Namibia near the town Lüderitz. It employs around 160 people and produced around 200K carats in 2017. Elizabeth Bay mine has contributed significantly over the years to the local economy of Lüderitz, particularly in providing high quality job opportunities for the local community. In 2009, following the economic downturn, the mine was put on care and maintenance. In 2011, the operation was restarted through the implementation of the Elizabeth Bay Optimisation Project which, at the time, projected a four year Life of Mine (LoM) to 2014. However, continuous innovation ensured that the mine has continued to operate well beyond this time, with a current LoM extending to 2019. Following a recent review, it was concluded that the best way to secure a longer future for the mine, beyond the projected 2019 life, was to find a more suitable lowcost operator that could allow the mine to continue to contribute to Namibia and Lüderitz through continued employment and economic activity. Riaan Burger, Chief Executive Officer, Namdeb, said: “Elizabeth Bay mine continues to play an important role in the development of Namibia’s diamond industry, so we have not taken this decision lightly. We are constantly reviewing new mining opportunities. As this mine nears the end of its current life, we are focused on finding a buyer that can sustain operations beyond 2019, protect jobs and contribute sustainably to the Namibian economy.” n

34.8 kilowatt solar roof at IIDGR Surat

The solar plant to generate about 56K units of electricity a year!

T

he International Institute of Diamond Grading & Research (IIDGR), part of De Beers Group, has installed a 34.8 kilowatt solar roof at its grading and inscription facility in Surat, India, to provide the operation with a renewable energy supply. Generating an average of 56,000 units of electricity each year, the solar plant will reduce the heat load of the building by 90 per cent and significantly decrease the electricity used for air-conditioning, delivering both environmental and financial benefits. The IIDGR Surat lab is among the first in the diamond industry to use solar power, with the panels being installed on its uniquely

curve-shaped roof. The solar plant has a 25-year lifecycle and will have paid for itself within five years as a result of the savings on electricity expenditure. Jonathan Kendall, President, IIDGR, said: “Over the past two years we've measured our carbon footprint and used this information to adapt our business practices in order to reduce our environmental impact and generate cost-savings in our energy and water consumption. “Sustainability is key for De Beers and this new solar operation is very much in line with our core beliefs. Meanwhile, the installation of the plant provides financial benefits alongside the positive environmental impact, so we hope to see a continued focus on initiatives such as this across the sector.” n

Nirav Modi gave vague offers!

P

TI: Scam-hit PNB said Nirav Modi, who allegedly defrauded the bank of about Rs 11,400 crore, has come up with "some vague offers" to repay the amount, even as the Enforcement Directorate continued raids at properties connected with the jeweller designer. The country's second largest PSU bank has detected a USD 1.77 billion (about Rs 11,400 crore) scam where billionaire jeweller Nirav Modi allegedly acquired fraudulent letters of undertaking (LoU) from a branch in Mumbai to secure overseas credit from other Indian lenders. The Enforcement Directorate today conducted multiple searches in connection with a money laundering case against jewellery designer Modi and others following a complaint by Punjab National Bank. Addressing a press conference here, PNB Chairman and Managing Director Sunil Mehta also said the bank will take "full-capacity" action against the wrongdoers in the fraud case, which started in 2011. PNB has suspended 10 officers over the scam and referred the matter to the CBI for investigations. Mehta said the bank detected the fraud and has referred the matter to the law enforcement agencies. "Nirav Modi has not come out with any concrete plan to repay so far. But they're coming out with some vague offers, which are under examination," Mehta said. Mehta further said he has not come to the bank "personally" and "we have requested

On questions regarding recovery of the amount, Mehta said the process has been initiated and the Enforcement Directorate has started seizing assets. "We are trying to protect the interest of all the lenders," he said. He said the bank was examining its whole system. "If we find any loopholes, we will plug them up," he said, adding it was a standalone case limited to one of its branches in Mumbai. He also said all other branches of the bank have been scanned to check any fraudulent activity. Mehta further said that the government too was examining the issue on day-to-day basis. "The matter is under investigation. We have not received any direction from our regulator RBI in the matter but they are our regulator, whatever direction they will give we will comply," Mehta said.

He also said Forensic audit the bank conduct forensic audit where it has doubt that fraud has been committed and let it be unearth. "This is the thing which is already documented so we may not require it. But if there is need be we may go for it," he said, amid volley of questions from reporters present on the occasion. The PNB CMD further said the bank has informed all its lenders about case. "We have issued advisory as well to them. We were the first to inform SEBI about this under the disclosure norms. So all these things are as per our clean banking agenda," Mehta added. In the last 123 years, he said the bank has seen many ups and down. "The bank at its full capacity will take every action to book wrongdoers. This fraud had started in 2011. Our own bank detected first and told the law enforcement agencies about this. PNB is fully committed to its clean banking policy. That is why we are the first one to detect and report this to the various law enforcement agencies," he said. PNB shares continued to bleed for the second day in a row, ending with a steep loss of 12 per cent at Rs 128.35 apiece on BSE. n

Policy and Progress: WGC Update A coherent policy framework Could help make India’s gold market!

Outlook:

I

We believe the policy announcements made in the Union Budget should be positive for India’s gold industry. A coherent policy framework could help make India’s gold market more efficient, transparent, and – most importantly – trusted by all stakeholders.

n a row the WGC announced their Market Update, India's Budget: policy and progress. The update says, India, a nation that accounts for around a fifth of annual global gold demand, has a long history of goldfocused policies. These, however, have often distorted the market rather than achieving policymakers’ aims. Announcements in the Union Budget on 1 February 2018, however, suggest this might change. Arun Jaitley, India’s Finance Minister, explicitly highlighted the government’s desire to formulate a comprehensive policy to develop gold as an asset class, create gold exchanges, and revamp the Gold Monetisation Scheme. The Budget also included policies designed to boost rural incomes. Better gold policies combined with rising incomes could bode well for India’s gold industry. Coherent gold framework: In the 2018 Union Budget, the Finance Minister made three key announcements on the government’s plans: 1: It intends to formulate a comprehensive gold policy to develop gold as an asset class. This represents a significant change of tack and could have positive implications for India’s gold market. For example, it could encourage regulators to embed gold in India’s financial architecture and financial institutions to develop gold-backed financial products, making it easier for institutional and retail investors to access gold. 2: It intends to establish an efficient system of regulated gold exchanges. This is an ambitious aim. India’s gold market is highly fragmented and riddled with inefficiencies. For example, gold trades at different prices in different cities. A regulated exchange can result in a more efficient and transparent market, which should boost investors’ trust in gold as an asset class. It could also support the development of India’s recycling market, as well as the Gold Monetisation Scheme (GMS). 3: It intends to revamp the GMS, which, if done correctly, could make it easier for consumers to open Gold Deposit Scheme (GDS) accounts. These policy announcements are all interlinked. Revamping GMS can support the gold exchanges, and the development of the exchanges can support GMS. And this could boost liquidity in India’s gold market, thereby supporting the development of gold-backed financial products. In our view, the government’s new approach is positive for India’s gold market. As we explained in Why India needs a gold policy, jointly published with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry in 2014, a gold policy focused solely on imports will only encourage smuggling. As we see it, an effective policy needs to recognise the positive role gold plays in Indian society and strive to create a transparent and efficient gold industry.

These announcements, however, were light on detail. They set the direction of travel, but not the exact path, and over the coming months government officials, including the think-tank NITI Aayog, will flesh out the next steps. We believe there may be some important developments in the short-term, though. For example, the Bureau of Indian Standards is working on regulatory guidelines to make hallmarking mandatory. This is expected to come into effect in 2018. This should ensure the integrity of India’s gold supply chain, protect consumers from under-carating, and enhance the reputation of India’s jewellery industry. After receiving a positive recommendation in the recent Economic Survey, momentum is building behind the development of modern infrastructure in the form of new jewellery parks, which will be home to manufacturers, hallmarking centres, banks, and logistical support. This can help make India’s gold industry more formal and potentially boost employment and exports. Many in the bullion industry expect the Bureau of Indian Standards to produce good delivery standards for 1kg bullion bars processed by local refineries. This could be an important step in creating a standardised bar that can be accepted by local banks, commodity exchanges (MCX and NCDEX), and the proposed gold exchanges. Some policy areas may take longer to progress than others.

Boosting rural incomes: India’s Finance Minister, Arun Jaitley, delivered a budget designed to drive the country’s economy forward. It focused on the rural economy, healthcare, education, infrastructure, and digitisation. The focus on the rural economy is especially important in the context of gold. Rural India accounts for around two-thirds of India’s gold demand, and this is heavily linked to income levels. Indeed, our econometric analysis reveals that, as a rule of thumb, a 1% increase in income leads to a 1% increase in gold demand, all else being equal.

As we outlined in our recent paper A gold spot exchange for India: Delivering structural reforms, the formation of a national gold spot exchange will entail a detailed process of engaging with banks and other market participants to design and build the right solution for India’s gold market.

The government’s aim to double farmers’ income by 2022, therefore, can bode well for the gold market. The Finance Minister announced an increase in the Minimum Support Price to 1.5 times the production cost of crops, and farmers are already benefiting from market infrastructure reforms. At present farmers sell their produce in local mandis – market-places where food and agri-commodities are sold. But under an initiative spear-headed by the Ministry of Agriculture, existing mandis will now be connected to a pan-India electronic trading platform. This will connect farmers, traders, and producers all over India so that they get the best price for their produce. Finally, to boost farmers’ access to finance, the annual agricultural credit target was increased to Rs 11trn (US$170bn) in 2018–19, up from Rs 10trn (US$155bn) in 2017–18. n

We believe that as well as benefiting from these reforms, India’s gold market can be supported by the economic boost recent financial and fiscal reforms could deliver. The World Bank, for example, predicts India will become one of the world’s fastest growing economies in the coming years, while rural India should benefit from the government’s aim to double farmers’ income by 2022. n Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 39

Gem Visions 2019 presented! Swarovski Gemstones Presents the latest trends, designs, themes & innovations 2019

S

warovski organized a dazzling private event “Gem Visions 2019” on 12th February 2018, in Mumbai for its exclusive branding partners & retail partners only. A Live webinar was also organized. Ms. Roza Topolnicka- Head Creative & Retail Marketing from Swarovski Gemstones Business presented the latest trends, designs, themes & innovations 2019. The extensive research done, foresightedness of preparedness was exemplary which made the event a grand success and the attendees were delighted to take back abundance of knowledge shared during the trend presentation. At a time of radical change in our jewelry world, Swarovski Gemstones, the prestige brand for genuine gemstones and created stones, transforms the format and focus of Gem Visions, its industry leading trend and design service. Gem Visions will now be presented twice yearly, each issue with a seasonal slant, so that the first new-look Gem Visions is targeted specifically on Spring/Summer 2019. The dynamically different design, and notebook layout, with a fresh, playful freedom, are intended to ignite innovation, stimulate imagination and capture the essence of the season’s theme:

Yes To All: In this Gem Visions we embrace and invite freedom of creative expression, we celebrate free spirits and thinkers, a sense of liberation in all facets of design, concept, color, form, craftsmanship, a new freedom in gem-cutting and setting. Looking ahead to spring 2019, we nurture today’s youth-fueled collective imagination, and the energy and ingenuity that drive change and progress, shaping social and cultural megatrends and diversity of design direction. We explore colors, mixing them with fantasy and originality, to harness their energy and the energy of light, which together make up the heart and soul of every gemstone. Inside the new lively magazine-style Gem Visions, as always you will find both in-depth, authoritative research and analysis of global megatrends, and our projected design directions, backed up with influences, icons and inspirations. This year, however, we have integrated the design directions into the text, throughout the book, reinforcing their relevance through short, sharp trend-related editorial features and news items, showing how these social, cultural, fashion and design shifts are making their presence felt in our world. New too for Gem Visions, Spring/Summer 2019, is a special focus feature: as the new freedom of thought and spirit is led by the millennials who are shaping our future and our consciousness, we take an informative look back at times of similar social and cultural revolution, specifically the 1960s and 70s, showing just how the “swinging” and “disco” decades impacted jewelry design, fashion and lifestyles.

Spring/Summer 2019: This season, we start by delving deep into three social and cultural megatrends, showing the design directions that we believe each will

generate, along with relevant market insights and key items of jewelry:

1. Millennials: It’s what everyone is talking about: we examine the profound changes brought about by Millennials, especially in the realms of luxury and communication, and ask how the jewelry world is responding. We highlight Chopard’s collaboration with Rihanna, journey to exotic places with the Digital Nomads, analyze the Millennial preference for experience and emotion over material possessions, and the fixation with an “Insta-Life”.

2. Retail Revolution: As radical change sweeps the retail landscape, transforming the way we shop, the long-established ritual of the jewelry purchase seems out of date. Here we look at new jewelry-buying environments, catering to the demand for experiential, immersive storytelling in retail. We follow the latest trends in renting, sharing and the versatility offered by monthly boxes of exchangeable jewels. 3. Powerful Women: The rise of the strong, fiercely individual yet resolutely feminine woman has gone hand in hand with a growing awareness of women’s issues around the world, resulting in a call to action. Over the past few years Gem Visions has tracked evolving ideals of femininity, and here we analyze the growing power of the female, the freedom of women to be themselves, whoever they want to be. This short glimpse at through the key messages of the season can be explored in greater detail at: http://swarovs.ki/gv Esteemed attendees for the event were Emerald Jewel Industry India Ltd, RKR Gold, Surya Golds, Veera Gold, SENCO Gold, Waman Hari Pethe Jewellers, Titan Industries Ltd, Anmol Jewellers, Reliance Retail Limited, Divinus Creations, Poonam Jewel, Blue Lotus Jewellery Pvt. Addressing the inaugural session, Shri Pramod Agarwal, Chairman, GJEPC, said, “We are proud and privileged to have a father figure and an institution - Shri Arunkumar Mehta to inaugurate the 11th Signature IIJS and 5th IGJME to set the tone for a very significant buying season and reaffirm our leadership. India a global manufacturing hub for the gem & jewellery business.” He added, “We appreciate the recent Government’s initiatives such as reducing GST on cut & polished diamonds and precious stones from 3% to 0.25%; reducing corporate tax from 30% to 25% on companies having turnover of up to Rs. 250 crore; and Government's move to contribute 12% to Employee Provident Fund (EPF) in wages of new employment for three years in all sectors.” Mr. Agarwal added, “GJEPC has been proposing the world diamond industry for generic promotion of diamonds continuously in the last few years and this has seen an effective solution in the form of Diamond Producers Association’s recent campaign, which will help create a strong top of mind recall value for diamonds in the luxury segment. The points raised in the last India Gold & Jewellery Summit on comprehensive Gold Policy, Gold Exchange and reframing of the gold monetization scheme has been announced in the Union Budget. GJEPC has the view that import duty on precious metal should be reduced and we have recommended the same to the Government.” “We have requested the Government to roll back the recent increase in import duty on cut & polished diamonds and colored gemstones. Our efforts on presumptive tax

SHOW TALK for diamonds and colored gemstones will continue. GJEPC has requested Government to allow exporters for procurement of precious metals on bond instead of advance payment of GST,” Shri Agarwal said. “We have requested Government to review FTAs with countries for giving level playing field to Indian industry and sign new trade agreements with countries such as the US, Canada & Russia amongst others where our exports can grow. Council will work on making our exhibitions world-class. We have to upgrade our manufacturing continuously to keep up with technological development to maintain our leadership position in diamonds and colored gemstones. We have to promote Brand India by focusing on increasing value addition of the sector,” Shri Agarwal said. “GJEPC will promote costume and fashion jewellery, which has great potential due to its cheap raw material and higher value addition,” Shri Agarwal said. Shri Agarwal added, “GJEPC is setting up Common Facility Centres in 13 identified clusters of the gem and jewellery in India with Government Grant. This will increase productivity and quality of small and medium players and karigars who are the backbone of our industry.

We have seen challenges emerging in the last decade due to lack of a global diamond promotion campaign. If a product is not promoted and rough production increases then every player in the value chain pipeline are squeezed. GJEPC has to help attract young talent to the gem and jewellery sector as well more trade constituents to worldclass infrastructure such as Bharat Diamond Bourse, Mumbai.”

This year, the overseas visitor registration too witnessed a steep increase when compared to last year indicating the growing importance of the show across the globe to source exquisite jewellery. The ‘on the spot’ registration facility increased visitor footfall significantly. The show, which featured well defined sections of Diamonds, Gemstones and studded Jewellery in addition to International Section.

Shri Colin Shah, Vice Chairman, GJEPC, said, “Signature IIJS 2018 is important as the tides are slowly but surely changing and I foresee better times ahead for the gem & jewellery industry. GJEPC continuously fosters a holistic environment to conduct business by organizing buyer-seller meets and dedicated diamond weeks. Trade shows such as IIJS and IGJME facilitate growth at every stage of the pipeline. GJEPC is leaving no stone unturned to ensure that the gem & jewellery industry continues to thrive and prosper.”

This year, the Gold section extended to accommodate more number of exhibitors under this category. The main highlight of the show is the Signature Club which showcases the most exquisite couture jewellery by the leading Manufacturers of the Country.

Shri Shailesh Sangani, Convener–National Exhibitions, GJEPC, said, “Signature IIJS and IGJME achieve the dual goal of presenting India’s finest jewellery creations to the world as well as providing Indians and international visitors with a comprehensive showcase of all the latest updates in technology and machinery. We need to continue to stay relevant in the luxury world with high quality designer jewellery and finishes.

The Government is willing to give grant for more CFCs in future. GJEPC will start a helpdesk, where members can seek guidance for increasing their exports. The infrastructure of the laboratories of GJEPC will be strengthened and we will make their certificates at par with the best international ones. We have gem and jewellery institutes in Mumbai, Delhi, Jaipur and Surat; we recently inaugurated IIGJ Varanasi and the Council will soon open another one in Udipi. We shall be doing Buyer-Seller meets in overseas markets for all gem & jewellery products.”

The gem & jewellery industry is regaining traction after GST regime has ushered in a new era and increased demand. buying purpose.” Mr. Milan Chokshi, Convener PM&BD said, “India is omnipresent in the world of Gems and Jewellery, and consequently the largest stakeholder inevery way. As the leader, it's essential that we extend our lead over the others by constantly striving to improve in every area. Definitely, Design Inspirations is a move in that direction and I am sure this would help the industry to move in sync, if not ahead of the industry.” RozaTopolnicka, Head of Creative and Retail Marketing, Swarovski Gems during her address on value chain said, “Brands today are shifting focus to target younger generation who believe in adorning the jewellery rather than locking it away. It is imperative to understand the consumer and cater the designs in line with their needs and preferences. Jewellery is viewed as an adornment rather than an investment. Revolutionary charms, eccentric ear wear and contemporary engagement rings are the trends to look out for this year.”

Mr. John Varghese, Associate Partner at IBM India said, “India is at the cusp of a first of its kind digital disruption. With the emergence of the Digital economy, brands have evolved in the last five years to adapt to new business models. Consumers spend majority of their time in the digital world giving designers an opportunity to leverage this platform to enhance visibility and interactivity.” “The digital economy will be a trillion dollar economy by 2025,” Varghese said. He went on to exhort the jewellery industry to pay heed to this and align strategies to take the digital world into their plans and see how they could leverage it for the growth of their own companies and industry. Paula De Luca, founder of The Futurist, said, “Design Inspirations is a platform for forecasting the jewellery trends which is essential knowledge for designers to enable them to plan with methodology and system. Understanding the consumers culture, taste and preferences, translates into knowing what they will buy and how.” “Trends are not to be confused with fashion or fads,” Paola clarifies at the outset. “Rather it is an understanding of social changes. Of seeing how these will effect what people wear, buy, and spend on.” Like the first day of Design Inspirations 2018, Day 2 also had speakers talking on a range of relevant topics. n

CLOSER TALK

It is key for us, as a global player, to be at Baselworld. - Nathalie Colin, Swarovski Creative Director

“Creativity is in the air” From your point of view: What significance does Baselworld have for Swarovski? Nathalie Colin: Even though we design and conceive our watches as true fashion accessories, they all feature expert craftsmanship, Swiss-made quality and refined details. For that reason it is key for us, as a global player, to be in Baselworld to present our novelties and innovations to international buyers, press and public. Participating in the fair since the launch of our first watch collection in 2009 definitely helped us gain credibility on the timepiece scene, and it gave us a fantastic opportunity to show the world how much the brand cherishes brilliance for all, offering watches in a rich variety of styles from timeless to on trend, for all personalities and across occasions.

What do you expect from this year’s Baselworld edition? Nathalie Colin: I am thrilled to be here this year, we have some exciting new lines to unveil, starring the Crystal Lake family which features an amazing dial made of a single piece of faceted sapphire crystal. So once more, we demonstrate that style and technical expertise can harmoniously join forces. Generally speaking, I look forward to the excitement of the fair, to the rich exchanges and feedbacks we get from various stakeholders, to the creativity we can feel in the air … and I must say it is very energizing to do so on our dazzling booth, which for sure remains one of the most eye-catching ones of the entire fair.

IN LIME LIGHT

At a star-studded red-carpet event in New York City, world-renowned Swiss watch brand Breitling celebrated the launch of its new Navitimer 8 collection and exhibited 60 vintage watches for the first time ever in North America. More than 300 distinguished guests from Australia, Latin America, Canada, and the United States were welcomed by Breitling’s new global CEO, Georges Kern, who introduced his vision for this storied brand’s latest chapter in a beautiful setting against the backdrop of the iconic New York City skyline. Houston Astros World Series pitchers Justin Verlander, Dallas Keuchel and Lance McCullers Jr., motocross champion Ken Roczen, former NFL quarterback and CBS NFL commentator Boomer Esiason, former astronauts Mark and Scott Kelly, and American actors Darren Criss, Olivia Munn and Armie Hammer were also in attendance for the festivities.

G

eorges Kern, who was named CEO of Breitling in the summer of 2017, recounted the brand’s rich heritage to the assembled guests at the seated dinner, and committed himself to taking Breitling into what he described as “a legendary future.” He added that he was particularly excited about the newest product line. “I am very proud that tonight we will unveil the new Navitimer 8 collection,” he said, “which is a salute to the brand’s innovations and accomplishments in the pioneering days of aviation.” The guests were excited to experience the newest watches and were impressed by the carefully curated collection of 60 vintage watches showcasing Breitling’s remarkable legacy. At the afterdinner party, they had the opportunity to immerse themselves in the brand’s rich heritage and precision watchmaking techniques through a series of interactive activities that highlighted the brand’s design, innovations, and pioneering achievements.

Breitling’s Newest Collection: Innovating into a Legendary Future Breitling launched a brand-new collection at the event as a tribute to Willy Breitling and the Huit Aviation Department he founded in

1938. Its name is an allusion to the number “eight” (huit in French), which Willy Breitlingchose as a reference to the eight-day power reserve that was considered essential for onboard timekeeping instruments on planes, but not necessarily for the wrist chronographs of that era. The new collection has been built on the legacy of the Breitling brand and its earliest pilot’s watches, and signifies a historic milestone on the company’s path to a legendary future.

An Extraordinary Moment: The Future Is Revealed and Classics Are Admired Another highlight of the evening was Breitling’s oppor- tunity to welcome chronograph collector Fred Mandelbaum to New York City, who brought a selection of 60 of his classic vintage Breitling watches to the celebration. The combination of the debut of the Navitimer 8 collection and the display of Fred Mandelbaum’s60 timeless masterpieces allowed guests to not only gain a glimpse into the rich history and heritage of Breitling, but also into the brand’s promising possibilities for the future. n Breitling and Norton Motorcycles

CELEBRITY QUOTE

“I’m preparing for Baselworld with statistics and sales documents.” KIM-EVA WEMPE CEO of Wempe Jewellers

“Quality can be seen and felt.” Kim-Eva Wempe talks about quality, jewellery premieres, and whom she would like to meet at the next Baselworld.

What was the most important premiere in your life? Kim-Eva Wempe: The “Cosmora by Kim” jewellery line, inspired by metropolises around the globe, consists of thirteen fantastic one-ofa-kind rings. I don’t only love this masterpiece of haute joaillerie, I also fondly recall its premiere in Berlin in 2014. To present the rings to the journalists, we created twelve different stagings and transformed the Jandorf department store in Berlin-Mitte into a magical world.

Which “first time”, i.e. which premiere, awaits you in the future? Kim-Eva Wempe: My first rally behind the wheel of my “youngtimer”. I don’t yet know which rally that will be! My Fiat Spider Volumex is still rather young, so it wouldn’t be eligible to participate in the Mille Miglia, for example. While I look for a suitable event, I’ll continue to drive my convertible only in Hamburg.

How do you recognise quality? Kim-Eva Wempe: Quality can be seen and felt in the craftsmanship. Genuine quality results from excellent craftsmanship and it especially manifests itself in the love for details.

Baselworld: Which human qualities do you particularly value? Kim-Eva Wempe: Conscientiousness!

What constitutes the quality of a watch or a piece of jewellery? Kim-Eva Wempe: Quality manifests itself when the watchmaker’s craft and the goldsmith’s art interact with high-quality materials, e.g. gold and platinum, diamonds or emeralds. And the idea, i.e. the design, also makes an essential contribution to quality.

Whom would you like to meet (at Baselworld) and why? Kim-Eva Wempe: I’d like to talk with the designer Marc Newson. He contributed to the design of the Apple Watch and, before that, he designed several variants of JaegerLeCoultre’s fascinating “Atmos”. He was already impressed by mechanical watches as a child, and as a teenager he was enthusiastic about Patek Philippe and ultra-slim watches from Piaget. This tension between modernity and mechanisms interests me. What inspired him in his work on the Apple Watch? Was he also influenced by the traditional watchmaker’s craft? These are questions that I’d like to discuss with him.

How are you preparing for Baselworld 2018? Kim-Eva Wempe: Very objectively: with statistics and sales figures. Before I go to Baselworld, I need to know what items were especially well received by our clientele, what we ought to augment in our assortment, and which purchasing volumes we’re planning. I usually search for inspirations and ideas on trips in advance of the show.

In the fourth generation, Kim-Eva Wempe has, since 2003, managed the fortunes of the homonymous, traditional, internationally active, Hamburgbased jewellery business, which was founded in 1878. Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 60

“The more we network with one another digitally, the more important eye contact becomes.” JEAN-CLAUDE BIVER Head of the watch division at LVMH (Hublot, Zenith, TAG Heuer)

“Quality is the Sum of its Parts.” What was the most important premiere of your life? Jean-Claude Biver: Without a doubt, the most important premiere of my life came in 1983 with Blancpain’s first watch with moon phase and complete calendar. The second important premiere was Hublot’s Big Bang. And fortunately, there was also a third: namely, Zenith’s Defy 21.

What important premieres will we experience at Baselworld 2018? Jean-Claude Biver: Zenith’s Defy Inventor, Hublot’s Ferrari Techframe II and TAG Heuer’s Grand Carrera 2018.

Jean-Claude Biver talks about outstanding premieres, the qualities of a watch, and the importance of Baselworld.

How do you recognise the quality of a watch? Jean-Claude Biver: Design, material, craftsmanship and calibre each influence the quality of a watch. One cannot differentiate the various percentages which each aspect contributes to the overall quality because the product and its quality are the sum of their parts. It is clear that one or the other element plays a greater or smaller role in the various models offered by a particular brand. But ultimately, nearly all parts must be equally represented in a product.

Baselworld offers opportunities to meet people from around the world. Why is this especially important in today’s digital era? Jean-Claude Biver: The more we network with one another digitally, the more important eye contact and personal contact become. That is what gives meaning and importance to events such as Baselworld.

“One does not really know a company until one has slept a night there.” Jean-Claude Biver has an unerring sense for the DNA of watch brands and he has a unique ability to make them blossom again. After reviving Blancpain and working for a time at Omega and Hublot, he became Head of the watch division of the LVMH Luxury Group (TAG Heuer, Hublot und Zenith) in 2014.

Which premiere can be experienced only at Baselworld 2018? Thierry Stern: The complete Rare Handcrafts collection is presented only during the show. These exclusive and unique timepieces are usually ready just in time for the opening of Baselworld. Thereafter, many of these timepieces leave our workshops for delivery, so the show offers a rare opportunity to see this amazing collection in its entirety.

How do you prepare for Baselworld 2018? Thierry Stern: It’s always intense because everything is ready only at the very last minute, but it’s also a time of very positive energy for me and the entire team involved at the show.

What does quality mean to you personally? Thierry Stern: Quality means everything to me. It is one of our most important values, for us as a company. And for our customers, quality is an integral element of a watch.

Is there anyone in particular whom you would like to meet in your life? What would you ask him or her? Thierry Stern: My future clients ... let’s say, in 20 years, to talk watches with the new generations of clients, to see how they think and what they like, and to become inspired for future creations. This is my passion and I always look forward to the future!

“B aselworld offers a global message that digital means cannot relate.” FRANÇOIS THIÉBAUD President Tissot

“ There is no better way to discover a product” François Thiébaud talks about the importance of Baselworld and products of exception.

Which important premiere will we experience at Baselworld 2018? François Thiébaud: One first is the fact that Baselworld will be shorter this year, going from eight to six days. Thanks to the internet, communication nowadays is much faster and allows us to communicate on our new products worldwide within seconds. It is therefore only natural we would adapt the length of the exhibition to the needs. However, Baselworld remains extremely important, as there is no better way to discover a product than to be able to see, feel and experience it for yourself. Furthermore, every brand has the opportunity to communicate their clear message and present its products in one place, which allows to exchange ideas and to truly discover the world of watchmaking. It is a place of excellence to discover watchmaking.

How do you recognise quality? François Thiébaud: Quality is about ensuring the best from start to finish. It is about having the best material for the creation of a product and an excellent assembly, whether it is automated or handcrafted. That is what will produce a product of exception. It will then also need to be associated to a qualitative message to finish it all off.

What would you like to experience at Baselworld 2018? François Thiébaud has been member of the Swatch Executive Group Management Board since 2006, with responsibility for Tissot, Mido, Certina as well as Swatch Group Brazil and the Swiss market. He is also President of the Baselworld Swiss Exhibitors Committee and member of the Baselworld Consulting Committee.

François Thiébaud: Baselworld is a central meeting place, where all the actors of the sector come together, from production to distribution and even clients, consumers and enthusiasts. They come to discover the richness of the industry. Baselworld remains a unique place not only to look but to discuss, exchange and feel all the emotions behind the products, the brands and even just the atmosphere of the exhibition. Baselworld offers a global message that digital means cannot relate.

Dear Mr Meier, what do you expect from Baselworld this year – and what can we expect from Glashütte Original? Thomas Meier: “We are travelling with high expectations to Baselworld, where we again intend to present interesting new products. As a preview to the upcoming trade show, we have already unveiled one of our new models. This wristwatch is a new variant of our innovative time-zone watch, the Senator Cosmopolite. We are introducing this model in a stainless steel case for the first time. Arabic numerals to indicate the hours are another new detail. We are indeed very eager to see how our guests respond to this model and to our other new products that we will present at the show.”

SASCHA MOERI TALKS ABOUT 130 YEARS OF CARL F. BUCHERER, AN INNOVATIVE TOUR BILLON AND THE YEARNING FOR ENDURING VALUES. Which premieres from the house of Carl F. Bucherer can one experience at Baselworld 2018? Sascha Moeri: We are unveiling a world innovation: the Manero Tourbillon DoublePeripheral, which reconfirms our innovative strength. In the context of celebrating our 130th year, which we begin at Baselworld, we are also showing choice vintage watches from the Carl F. Bucherer Museum. These timepieces lead their viewers through 130 exciting years of watchmaking history.

How are you preparing for Baselworld 2018? I like to compare Baselworld with the Olympic Games or a World Championship, in which we compete as a unified team. I see myself in the role of the trainer, where all the various aspects come together and who appropriately prepares himself and his team for the show.

What does quality mean for you personally? For me personally, quality is a concept that conjoins a number of different values. Sustainability, authenticity, history and stability all contribute toward creating a perception of quality. In a fast-paced era like ours, I believe that the yearning for enduring values is greater than ever.

Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 64

Is there someone you would like to meet, either in your life or at Baselworld? What question would you ask this person? Especially on the occasion of our 130th anniversary, I would be particularly honoured to meet our founding father Carl Friedrich Bucherer. The first questions I would ask him: “Which place in Lucerne means the most to you? And what is the personal history of your favourite watch?” I would proudly show him how the store that he established in 1888 has grown into an internationally successful watch brand with presences in more than 25 countries and over 350 points of sale. Established in 1888, Carl F. Bucherer is an international Swiss watch manufactory with its headquarters in Lucerne. The brand is a member of the Bucherer Group, over which Jörg G. Taimyr Peninsula at $4.4bn JV

R

ussia is on track to overtake South Africa as the world’s largest platinum producer after its two mining giants Norislk Nickel and Russian Platinum this week announced that they are to invest $4.4bn in a joint venture to develop some of the richest known precious metals deposits on Siberia’s Taimyr Peninsula. The deposits contain proven ore reserves of 4,300 tonnes of platinum and palladium , they said, and the JV will hold three mining licenses to deposits in the Norilsk Industrial District in the Krasnoyarsk region. The deposits are close to each other, creating “one of the world’s largest clusters for the production of platinum and palladium,” according to Musa Bazhaev, president of Russian Platinum. ‘ The joint venture will start operations at the end of this year and is targeting eventual annual production of 70 to 100 tonnes of platinum and palladium starting in 2020, he added, reversing a trend that saw output drop last year and set to do the same in 2018 , largely due to South African production falling due to mine closures. After hitting a seven-year low in 2016, platinum prices rose by 5% the World Platinum Investment Council (WPIC) reported last November – but lagged palladium, which jumped by 45% overtaking platinum for the first time since 2001.

Both metals are used in the vehicle industry for emissionscutting catalytic converters but platinum is used more in diesel engines which have fallen out of favour following the Volkswagen emissions scandal in 2015. It is also increasingly used in jewellery with double-digit growth in India and a stable market in China expected to drive demand up by 3% this the first rise since 2014, while a rebound in demand from the petroleum and glass sectors is projected to raise industrial usage by 9%. n

BRAND WATCH

TOURBILLON “TOMORROW” In 2017, the Alexander Shorokhoff watch manufacture has celebrated its 25th jubilee. And for this special occasion some exclusive watch models have been created. The tourbillon “Tomorrow“ is one of them.

B

y making this watch the designer Alexander Shorokhov remained true to his principles. The extraordinary futurist design is well suited to the shaping of his successful watch collection “Avantgarde“. And it is not purely coincidental that the name of the watch is “Tomorrow“. The exceptional futurist design of this watch has been modelled on nature. It can be interpreted in several ways being similar to a cobweb, a bat or something other. However, the plan of Alexander Shorokhov was to make a decentralized front side. The centre has been shifted with the focus now on the brand’s logo due to the celebration of “Alexander Shorokhoff’s” 25th anniversary. The lines are neither straight nor passing proportionally, they are showing a strong individualism and intensifying their importance. The lower part of the dial is colored in a pleasant blue tone and have a sun beams polishing. Despite the multitude of elements and the displaced centre, the watch guarantees clarity with clear demarcation of the gold-plated hour marks as well as contrasting watch hand that stands out from the background of the dial. All in all this design brings something new into the “Avantgarde“-collection completing it by another highlight. The watch movement is a hand winding tourbillon of the well-known company “Concepto” of Switzerland. The movement bridges have been hand-engraved by the manufacturer “Alexander Shorokhoff“ and returned to Switzerland for inal assembly. The watch “Tomorrow“ will be produced encased in 18 ct. rose gold or in stainless steel and is limited to 5 pieces of each dial version worldwide. 

6 ARGUMENTS FOR A WORLD RARITY Unique Chrono-Regulator by “Alexander Shorokhoff”

I

mmediately, at irst sight the new Chrono- Regulator-Skeleton fascinates with its innovations in design and engineering. The aim of the designer and producer Alexander Shorokhov was to prove that even in a “skeleton” version, a Chrono-Regulator can be functional and of great readability. The Chrono-Regulator presents a rare execution of a mechanical chronograph – this fact can serve as i r s t a r g u m e n t fo r m a k i n g i t collectible for every watch enthusiast. The displays for hour, minute and second are placed at three separate locations: The minute display is located at 6 o’clock and the second display is located at 9 o’clock. In addition to this there is also the timer feature with two hands: The large second hand from centre and the small minute hand counting the minutes at 3 o’clock. Due to the blued hands and the clear division of time, time is easy to read. Another feature is the rhodium-plated and skeletonised date indicator dial. In order to see the date clearly in one position, a special bridge with a small window was developed and applied at 6 o’clock. On the plate below this window is a circular area that was covered in a thin layer of dark blue enamel to increase visibility. Such a date indication is unique and only made by the Alexander Shorokhoff watch manufacturer – this can be counted for the second argument in favour of the “world rarity”. 

KANDY CLASSIC Elegant and of enduring beauty in “Alexander Shorokhoff“-style

B

esides the unusual „Kandy”-watches with guilloched dials, the Alexander Shorokhoff watch manufacturer has produced two elegant models of this watch line in classic style. Actually, it is contradictory to interpret a watch in a square case as a classic and timeless beauty. It is exactly this idea behind the model and many other watches of the “Avantgarde”-collection by “Alexander Shorokhoff“: to interpret things in a new way, to create controversially, to provoke. If this model turned out well, is in the eye of the beholder. Fact is that it does not break the ranks of the Avantgarde-line, but rather completes it with new attributes. Consequently, Alexander Shorokhov has once more proves that he is able to connect the contrasts of classical and modern art into one harmonious ensemble.  Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 69

MINI SWEETY CHOOSE YOUR OWN MOOD Clouds of colour, touches of beauty, portions of happiness? Whatever we call them, the delightful jewellery collection by the Belgian brand Bigli is a treat for the senses. An even larger range of colours and incredible effects: the smooth and gentle, round or triangular cabochons of the Mini Sweeties offer you a palette of 49 shades. All 100% natural, 100 % mineral. The rings, earrings and pendants are produced with the greatest care in 18-carat gold with the best quality diamonds and precious stones.

49 Colours Laurence Aerens and Thierry Spitaels have always dreamed of being able to offer every woman her ‘own’ piece. An individual talisman which is entirely unique due to the interplay of materials. In order to extend the range of colours for the mini sweeties, Bigli uses an age-old technique favoured by Italian gem workers layering. Precious stones are carefully placed in layers on top of each other, in order to create completely new fascinating colours. Subtle or very intense, velvety or with a lot of depth.

Variety is the spice of life Two shapes and two sizes, or even three for the rings, the collection is getting bigger and bigger. Just replace one colour in a trio of rings and itimmediately looks completely different. They combine perfectly with designs featuring a pavé setting or with arabesque motifs.

MINI WAVES PERFECTLY BRILLIANT Belgian jewellery brand BIGLI is celebrating its 20th anniversary in the business. This autumn Thierry and Laurence (the founders of the brand) are launching their new pavé line, the Mini WAVES. The new collection is a sequel of BIGLI’s WAVES from 2007. The Mini WAVES have the same undulating shape which intensifies the reflection of the diamonds. They are smaller and therefore perfectly suitable to combine on one finger, but of course they are also splendid as a single piece of jewellery! Four formats, four variations. The rings are available in white, yellow and pink gold combined with white, brown or black diamonds, either or not finished with black rhodium. The Mini WAVES are also available in four sizes. Finding the right combination thus becomes a fine challenge.

CHLOÉ A BEAUTIFUL STATEMENT Belgian jewellery brand BIGLI launches a new line: CHLOÉ. The power of women

Laurence Aerens, the woman behind Belgian jewellery brand BIGLI, got her inspiration for the new CHLOÉ collection from the atmosphere of the seventies, the years of her own youth. She named the collection after her youngest daughter because with Chloé she wants to tell a story about mothers and daughters. The round, explosive and irregular shapes are a reference to the unpredictable and unexpected nature of life itself. CHLOÉ is a wonderful tribute to the female spirit, to resilience and generosity. The CHLOÉ rings are available in three variations: A combination of stones in sparkling white: the rutilized Quartz Moonshine, A combination of stones in mysterious black: the Rutile in the Dark A combination of stones in sparkling green: the Green Lemon. The unexpected colours are the result of an ingenious superposition of different gems, including rutilized quartz, pearl, onyx and agate. Due to the volume and the curved lines, a sample of sublime craftsmanship of BIGLI’s grinders, the CHLOÉ rings are real statement rings. The double golden curve of the ring ensures a contemporary and innovative design.

Winner determined for She said YES! contest!

A

lrosa, the world's largest diamond mining company, summed up the results of the contest “She said “YES!” and chose the most interesting idea of a marriage proposal. A young man from Moscow has become a winner. His name and the idea will remain a secret not to ruin the surprise for his dearie. He will receive a diamond ring as a reward to translate the idea into reality. Alrosa plans to follow the developments and shoot a video based on the winner's script with participation of real characters. The company has reviewed about 100 applications. The most common idea was the proposal during scuba diving: according to scripts, the girlfriend should find a ring in a seashell on the seabed. A few more participants want to propose at the soccer matches during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, as well as on the plane or in the

movie theatre, having bought out all the seats in the hall. The interesting ideas also include a proposal on the shore of Lake Baikal, at the knight's tournament and during the gondola ride through the canals of Venice. One of the participants plans to get a "star from the sky" - a bright diode with a ring attached to it. “Our expert committee has reviewed many interesting applications that came to our e-mail address from different cities of Russia - from Moscow to Khabarovsk. We were amazed by the number of responses and the variety of sincere ideas full of love and romance. This once again confirms the fact that the tradition of engagement rings continues to be formed in our country and people are capable of beautiful deeds for the sake of their loved ones. After all, the diamond is a true symbol of love and loyalty”, Dmitry Komendantov, Deputy Head of the

Marketing and Public Relations of Alrosa said. Alrosa's competition started in December 2017 and is a part of generic marketing campaign aimed at educating consumers and creating a culture and traditions of diamond jewelry consumption. Smolensk Diamonds, a subsidiary of Kristall Production Corporation, a long-term buyer of Alrosa's rough diamonds, manufactured the ring for the winner of “She said “YES!” contest. n

Vincent Calabrese, Baselworld 2018: Pegasus "A dream turned into reality is another dream.”

T

he “Pegasus” is a technical tour de force for it requires the craftsman watchmaker to display the highest mastery of his art in order to actualize this unique movement. As for the engraver, he must immerse himself in the fine details while conceiving of others and yet avoid the risk of overwhelming the work as a whole. Gold and sapphire are the only possible materials for such a creation, producing as they do a splendid, dazzling play of light. And yet the profound nature of this creation reveals more than a mere virtuoso display—for it seeks to explore what is most precious in us: our dreams. What better companion than Pegasus in our journey of dreams? He took flight at the very beginning of mythology, and yet he enjoys the richest iconography in every era: the personification of water, the solar myth, the shaman’s mount, his link with the human

imagination was emphasized by the school of Carl Jung. In our own days, he is omnipresent in virtual games, the cinema and literature. Pegasus is an eternal myth, which is why he could not now be more real, more tangible. Vincent will be present at the AHCI’s stand located in Hall 2, Stand C15. One of Vincent Calabrese’s most notable achievements was the founding of the

Académie Horlogère des Créateurs Indépendants (AHCI) in 1985. Vincent is known throughout the world for his extraordinary creations. For example, in 1988, he was the first to produce a wristwatch with a flying tourbillon. He also created the Golden Bridge for Corum, as well as the Tourbillon and the one minute Carrousel for Blancpain. He is recognized by his peers as one of the greatest of living watchmakers. n

rawing on his mastery of both jewellery and watchmaking, Swiss setter and goldsmith Andreas Altmann thrives on the challenge of creating unique and beautifully unusual timepieces. Following in the footsteps of the artistic sculptures steeped in history and brimming with emotion that he designed under his first brand, Giberg Swiss Noble Forge, the designer is now proud to present a new watchmaking brand specialising in state-of-the- art pieces inspired by art. Niura is an ode to sensual femininity and his first timepiece. The watch features hinges that allow it to perfectly encircle the wrist of its wearer. These articulated case edges enclose a 5N red gold casing measuring 35 mm across, with a transparent sapphire dial and caseback. The watch is powered by a Giberg Flying Tourbillon “Trilevis 6118” Manufacture Calibre, made in-house and designed to ensure a power reserve of 72 hours. A fine structure, entirely set with diamonds, links the edges of the case to the lizard leather strap, on which a diamond-studded drop balances delicately. GIBERG, THE MYSTICAL RENAISSANCE Biel/Bienne, 22 February 2018 – Five years after unveiling Ahton, his now legendary sculpture, master jeweller Andreas Altmann is applying his creativity and expertise to watches suffused with Haute Horlogerie. Timepieces that appeal not only for their style but also their watchmaking mechanisms. Like an extension of the Giberg Swiss Noble Forge, the new Giberg Haute Horlogerie brand is an elegant demonstration of its mastery of time, just as Ahton was proof of its artistic dexterity, and is a worthy guardian of unique expertise. Andreas Altmann’s exceptional and original watches will be unveiled at the forthcoming Baselworld show.

P

rimal, wild, a master of chaos, for many civilisations the dragon was symbolic of evil. For others, it was a protector or an emblem of life and power. Ahton himself symbolises the rebirth of ancient mystical powers. His name, of Nordic origin, signifies “he who sees, he who thinks”. His creator, the Swiss artist Andreas Altmann, has bestowed him with powers of interior conviction founded on the knowledge of his own strength. Ahton is a masterpiece of the most exceptional craftsmanship imaginable, and a unique sculpture entirely handcrafted by the artist and his Giberg Swiss Noble Forge team over a period of almost five years. Five kilograms of solid gold were required to produce the mystical beast, which is studded with 7739 diamonds weighing a total of 108 carats. As if captured in action, the dragon exudes the full power of his ferocity, with the eye drawn to his gleaming armour, his outspread wings, and the phantasmagoric fire he breathes from his savage mouth. Such power in Ahton’s artistic expression is due to the painstaking attention to detail, the strict use of materials and the undeniable expertise of Andreas Altmann’s team. The mythical beast Ahton is a worthy representative of Giberg Swiss Noble Forge, which strives to create unique pieces of the highest quality.

DEVOTED TO ART A trained goldsmith and gemsetter, Andreas Altmann endeavours to create individual pieces in highly limited editions, for which he has no limits when it comes to meeting a customer’s desires. The master jeweller uses the most precious materials available to create incredible sculptures, each influenced in one way or another by history. Wisdom, power, the strength and

courage of heroes, or the virtues are some of the subjects he chooses to give remarkable physical form. With its cutting-edge technical innovation and keen artistic vision, Giberg Swiss Noble Forge has become one of the world’s most accomplished specialists in handling and crafting the finest materials. This recognition is already a powerful affirmation of the haute horlogerie and joaillerie credentials of existing and future watches produced by the Giberg watchmaking brand.

GIBERG RENAISSANCE Giberg Swiss Noble Forge has imbued its new Giberg Haute Horlogerie brand with its artistic expertise and brought a new vision of the art of reading the time. The company’s static art is thus brought to life by the calibre of Giberg Haute Horlogerie watches. This hand-wound mechanical movement, entirely designed in-house by the brand, offers a 72-hour power reserve provided by two barrels that drive the flying tourbillon positioned at 6 o’clock. The transparent sapphire dial reveals the beauty of the watch’s mechanism, as it dances the light and gentle dance of time. n

GLOBAL EDGE

Turkey retains edge in

Global Jewellery scene

T

urkish manufacturers remain a force to be reckoned with in the international jewellery market. Armed with a rich jewellery-making legacy and innovative spirit, Turkish jewellers are once again out to dazzle the world in 2018 as they move to further expand their global foothold through modernisation. Fuelled by solid sales in the gold jewellery sector, the Turkish jewellery industry stood its ground amid economic and political uncertainties in 2017. It also recorded sustained growth in the silver jewellery and jewellery mounting segments, while its loose diamond and diamond jewellery business started to gain steam in the market. Data from the Jewellery Exporters’ Association of Turkey or JTR showed that jewellery exports from January to November last year had already reached more than US$3 billion. This positive momentum also prevailed at the October 2017 Istanbul Jewelry Show – a yardstick to help measure the industry’s strength. Sirzat Akbulak, a manager at JTR, revealed that last year’s show was an improvement on the 2016 edition in terms of buyer quality and volume. “There’s a good volume of people who visited the show. It was busy and crowded with a good mix of buyers,” noted Akbulak. “We organised buyer missions from South America, North Africa and Malaysia, among others. We also arranged B2B meetings for them. It’s refreshing to provide a variety of clients and alternative markets for the jewellery industry.” Apart from a thriving local market, Turkey also exports to the Middle East, the US, Europe and Asia.

Emeralds from Ediz Dereli

“Our most sought-after products are still plain gold jewellery, followed by silver and diamond jewellery. The diamond sector is quite promising,” the JTR official added.

Developments Akbulak cited the ease of doing business in Turkey as a crucial factor in the jewellery industry’s growth. The lifting of a special consumption tax on loose diamond imports in 2015 paved the way for a stronger loose diamond trade while other regulatory reforms made it easier for companies to set up shop in Turkey. In the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business Report 2018, Turkey moved a few notches up to rank 60 due to improvements in registering properties and access to credit. According to Akbulak, the gold and diamond sectors are benefitting from such reforms since these are attracting more investors. “It’s easier to do business in Turkey, and this is opening up new opportunities for the jewellery sector. Turkey is a rising jewellery hub,” he noted. In line with these developments, the jewellery industry also launched a fresh marketing and promotional campaign: Jewellery = Turkey. The new slogan capitalises on Turkey’s illustrious history in jewellery making, which dates back to 5000 BC, as well as Turkish jewellers’ ability to quickly adapt to the times. “We also started a social media campaign on Instagram, Twitter and Facebook to promote our new slogan. This is a novel approach. The industry is going digital, which means opportunities are limitless. We can’t keep doing things traditionally. The time for change is here,” noted Akbulak.

Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 83

GLOBAL EDGE Diversified portfolio Ediz Dereli, founder of his eponymous gemstone trading company, underscored the need to diversify to thrive in an ever-changing jewellery and gemstone business landscape.

In a separate interview, Ali Ramazan Santo, general secretary of the Istanbul Chamber of Jewelry (IKO), said Turkey offers buyers a unique combination of manufacturing know-how and modern business strategies. The 3,000-strong organisation opened the IKO Jewelry Centre, which conducts training sessions on gemstone-cutting, and an IKO gemmological laboratory last year. Both services were set up in collaboration with the Istanbul Development Agency. The lab, which is Turkey’s first domestic gemmological institute, is currently awaiting ISO accreditation, according to Santo. “Turkish jewellers are able to produce orders fast and on time. We also offer a massive portfolio of products in various designs from traditional, Ottomaninspired pieces to contemporary styles. Labour cost is cheaper here too, but the quality of the product remains high,” remarked the IKO official. “Our government also offers incentives for exporters.” This year, all chambers of jewellery in major cities such as Istanbul and Ankara, among others, will be housed under one unified body, according to Santo. “Every city has a different chamber of jewellery. Our plan will allow members to hold frequent meetings throughout the year as part of an umbrella organisation in order to discuss major issues in the jewellery sector,” he added.

Expertise Business was stable for Arpas AS in 2017, said the company’s regional marketing manager Mahir Heybeli, who noted that the local market showed slight signs of improvement compared to previous years. “Buyers are more confident this time around compared to 2016. People felt safer since the political situation is starting to stabilise,” he said in a separate interview. Arpas exports to 79 countries including the US and Europe – its best-performing markets – Russia, Asia and the Middle East. It also has a customer base in emerging markets in the Far East such as the Philippines, Malaysia and Indonesia. These markets, however, have recently slowed down. The jeweller specialises in lightweight and commercial products. Its fastest-moving items are 14-karat to 18-karat gold jewellery at competitive prices. “We are focusing on European buyers at the moment since business is weak in some emerging markets. This is the advantage of having a diverse customer portfolio,” noted Heybeli. Asian buyers prefer lightweight and sparkling gold jewellery pieces, which is why the diamond cut is popular with them, he added. American and European clients, meanwhile, are partial to lightweight, polished products that are less shiny. Heybeli said jewellers are wary of a number of factors that could affect the business such as gold prices and currency fluctuations in 2018. “If the US dollar continues to strengthen, emerging markets will import less. But we remain optimistic about prospects this year. We will continue to produce new items and invest in various initiatives to keep our inventory fresh,” he stated. n Courtesy : By Bernardette Sto. In April last year, Ediz Dereli embarked on a diamond wholesale business, selling smaller-sized stones of up to 70 pointers. “There was a lack of interest in coloured gemstones in the last two years. Mid-range products are still selling but the upper-range items seldom move. That’s why we decided to expand our offerings to include smaller-sized diamonds. Our aim is to be experts in this category,” revealed Dereli. The company has since found new domestic customers that purchase both diamonds and coloured gemstones. Among Dereli’s bestperforming coloured gemstones are perennial favourites such as sapphires, emeralds, rubies and tanzanite stones. He also cited several challenges faced by jewellers in Turkey today, the most pressing of which is competing with technology and other big-ticket sectors for buyers’ attention. “Instead of buying a US$1,000 piece of jewellery, buyers would rather spend on the latest smartphone or perhaps, travel to another country. Buyers’ ever-evolving hobbies and interests, coupled with geopolitical events, are affecting our business,” noted Dereli. “While some companies close down and move to other sectors, we stayed on because we believe in our sector. Through product diversification, we were able to turn things around.” Ediz Dereli mainly caters to the domestic market but it also sells to Russia, the Middle East and Asia. “Our goals in 2018 are to further develop our diamond business and increase penetration in the domestic market,” continued Dereli. For Muhammed Kannouss, regional manager of Ipekyolu Jewellery, the key to staying afloat in a challenging business environment is to keep innovating. An expert in the Turkish silver jewellery sector, Ipekyolu registered steady growth last year compared to 2016. It sells to 95 countries, with Russia, the US, South America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia as its major markets. “We have been in the industry for four decades. This year, we are aiming to grow even more. We can still feel the effects of the global crisis but to combat that, the company continues to find ways to refine its business operations. We always offer new products and designs. We’ll never stop innovating,” said Kannouss.

RED CARPET

HANDCRAFTED SCULPTURE TIMEPIECES THE AGONIUM COLLECTION While Daniel Strom masters all the intricacies of watchmaking, he first and foremost regards watches as a vast field of expression. Far more than a distillation of technical sophistication and design, he sees in them a reflection of what we truly are, deep down inside. A watch viewed not as a means of expressing social status, but rather a certain vision of life – and secondarily also telling the time. He had dreamed of his Agonium collection for years before finding the perfect alchemist’s blend of watchmaking and silversmithing required to create it. The watch becomes a sculpture, an authentic work of art on the wrist that evokes our innermost questions regarding life, death, the finite nature of our existence, as if to remind us to live our time to the full, rather than seeking to control it. n

STROM BRINGS JOY HEAD OF CREATION AND MAKER. The man behind this new reasoning is Daniel Strom. Designer.Watchmaker.Philosopher. With his company, Strom Prestige Swiss Timepieces SA, in Biel, he revisits time, rethinks the watch, invents new symbioses and gives form to his convictions. The common denominator? To design a watch that does more than give time. A watch that also has us think about our very existence. Dragons and skulls thus become charged with positive emotions and shed any morbid connotations. This is art for the wrist, each unique and outside the grip of aesthetic convention. A watch that is art, symbol and belief. n

“In Memorian HR Giger” Strom reveals the final work of Academy Award-winning Swiss artist, HR Giger. Swiss watch brand Strom presents the “In Memorian HR Giger” watch, one of the final projects on which the artist worked before his death in 2014. A veritable “wrist sculpture”, the timepiece features HR Giger’s legendary biomechanoid creature. Acclaimed for his “fantastic-realism” works, HR Giger shot to fame with his creation of the monster in Ridley Scott’s 1979 film, Alien, for which he received an Oscar in the “Best Visual Effects” category the following year. Deeply saddened by the death of this man, who had also become his friend, Daniel Strom waited three years before presenting the watch that they had created together, named “In Memoriam HR Giger” in tribute to him. For the official launch, he has chosen the HR Giger Museum in Gruyères, which features a sculpture of the biomechanoid creature emblematic of HR Giger’s work proudly displayed at the entrance. n Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 85

Calvin Klein minimal Calvin Klein revisits a grand classic. A vintage-inspired icon is now reinterpreted through an authentic anthem to restrained purity, aptly named Calvin Klein minimal. The understated graphic lines of the dial form a perfectly controlled design accentuated by the extremely slim bezel framing the case. This new unisex model comes in two sizes available in various colour variations, either playing with contrasts or taking a tone-on-tone approach. The case comes in stainless steel, yellow gold PVD, pink gold PVD or black PVD-finished variations, teamed with a matching Milanese mesh bracelet or a black leather strap. The hours and minutes tick off the time against a blue, silver-toned or black dial background.

OrisAquis Date The OrisAquis Date is a new milestone in Oris' history as a maker of highperformance diver's watches since the 1960s. Its design brings a touch of elegance to this tool watch, which is just at home under a cuff as under water. The lugs and the bracelet are now thinner, while hands and hour-markers have been given a bolder, sharper appearance. The unidirectional bezel, in black ceramic, is easier to grip, thanks to a small gap introduced between the case and the body, while retaining the same excellent legibility for keeping track of dive time. The sleeker silhouette of the Aquis watch brings a new mark of refinement, without sacrificing any of the technical performance for which it is renowned, including waterresistance to 300 metres.

Harry Winston Emerald Harry Winston has a legacy as one of the world's most important purveyors of diamonds, and the Swatch Group is keeping that heritage alive. Jewelled watches remain an important part of the company, including the new Emerald watch with diamonds, combined with the soft touch of pink sapphire. The Art Deco lines of the eight-sided case, set with 53 brilliant-cut diamonds, are a tribute to the emerald-cut, the favorite diamond shape of Harry Winston, who founded the company in 1932. The emerald shape is repeated on the dial as an outline composed of 44 brilliant cut diamonds set into a background of white mother-of-pearl. The frame is accented by pink sapphires, set at 3, 6 and 9 o'clock and a larger, emerald-cut pink sapphire at the 12 o'clock position. The matching pink satin strap wraps around the wrist twice, reflecting a current trend in ladies' watches. Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 86

Maximus is a surname and superlative adjective, derived from the Latin Magnus, which means "great", and Maximus therefore means "the greatest". No other name could be better suited than "MAXIMUS" to designate this exceptional model of KERBEDANZ; the precision of the mechanical movement is ensured by the largest "tourbillon" for wristwatch in the world. In ancient Rome, the title of "Maximus" was given to the high priest at the head of the College of Pontiffs. The Pontiffs were priests united in a college, charged with the establishment of the calendar of the good and bad days in the heart of the Roman public religion, consecrating the edifices and naming the other priests. This title was then systematically awarded to all Roman emperors during the imperial period following the reign of Augustus. As a result, "Maximus" had become the key title for expressing greatness in all its splendor. And Circus Maximus, a Roman monument, the most gigantic known at that time, became the expression of this greatness. This is the largest arena in Roman antiquity, known as the «Circus Maximus ", located between the Palatine and the Aventine. Mainly intended for horse or chariot races, Circus Maximus was built at the beginning of the 6th century BC by the Etruscan king Tarquin the Elder. Originally, the dimensions of the arena were 370 meters long by 83 wide. Subsequently, it was enlarged successively by Cesar, Claudius and Nero, then by Caracalla and Aurelian, so that in the 4th century AD the track was 621 meters long by 118 wide and it is estimated that more than 150 '000 spectators could take their seats. The Circus Maximus remains to this day the largest sports arena that the world has known. During Roman Antiquity the terms Magnus and Maximus were also used as names or forenames by the Romans or the populations integrated into the Roman Empire. Thus, under the name of Magnus Maximus or Maximus, a Gallo-Roman military leader of the 4th century was proclaimed "Augustus" (that is to say, Emperor) by his troops, Took possession of Gaul and Spain, and finally took Rome in 387. n Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 87

MOONMACHINE 2 MB&F + Sarpaneva

A

s strange as it might sound, moonlight doesn’t exist. It is an illusion, and even the word “moonlight” is misleading. The moon gives off no light of its own, it only reflects light from the sun. In effect, moonlight is sunlight, projected onto Earth via the moon. If there’s one person who can be relied upon to thoroughly grasp this concept, it’s Stepan Sarpaneva, the independent Finnish watchmaker whose work has become synonymous with the moonphase display. Little wonder, then, that the second collaboration between MB&F and Stepan Sarpaneva has resulted in a horological creation that occupies the same elusive space as moonlight, somewhere between illusion and reality. The MB&F MoonMachine 2 brings us the world’s first projected moonphase display. MoonMachine 2 comes housed in the case of Horological Machine Nº8, the first MB&F creation to possess two design icons of the Horological Machine collection: the battle-axe rotor, and the heads-up time display first seen in Horological Machine Nº5. The stripped-down case construction of HM8 emphasised the illusory nature of the projected hours and minutes, and MoonMachine 2 uses the same mechanism to highlight the visual impact of a moon disc appearing in a space too small to fully contain it. n

Legacy Machine No 2

L

egacy Machines are wondrous reinterpretations of significant horological inventions by the greatest watchmakers in history. So the contemporary look endowed by the otherworldly appearance of Legacy Machine No.2's dual flying balances, suspended high above the dial from four gracefully arcing arms, may at first appear paradoxical. But make no mistake; LM2 is a timepiece tracing its lineage back over 250 years to three of the greatest watchmakers who ever lived: Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747– 1823), Ferdinand Berthoud (1727– 1807) and Antide Janvier (1751– 1835). These horological legends of the 18th century are united not only by their inventive genius, but also by the fact that they have all constructed clocks and watches with two balances. Oscillating on high, the exalted double balance wheels of LM2 were inspired by, and pay homage to, one of the rarest mechanisms in the history of watchmaking: the dual regulator. And rarer still, the average rates of Legacy Machine No.2's dual regulators are transmitted by a differential to a single gear train, where the majority had two separate movements. n

LONGITUDE

L

ongitude and the epic search for coordinating navigation to the imaginary vertical lines that delineate the planet remain part of the epochal history of Thomas Earnshaw. Thomas Earnshaw received an award from the Board of Longitude in 1805 following his work in creating simplifications that made trans-navigation all the more achievable and safer. The Shadow edition of the Longitude references this via subtle hints through the see through caseback now lightly lined with vertical lines and with a great detail of finish and detail on the dial. Crafted out of solid stainless steel, the 44 mm diameter case continues the flowing lines of the Longitude family silhouette and completes itself with a vintage serrated “pumpkin” style crown. A smoky translucent dial frames the see through skeleton movement which displays sun/moon display, a secondary timezone and a view into the rotating flywheel – which creates a look of intricacy and complication without being confusing. An hour and minute track is comprised of facetted baton markers – that correspond to Breguet style hands sweeping over the dial face effortlessly. A stunning update to an already impeccable collection of dress watches the Longitude Shadow automatic hugs the wearers wrist courtesy of a supple, elegant genuine leather strap that fits snug and comfortably. n

BIG BANG UNICO RED MAGIC MAKING THE IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE, HUBLOT CREATES THE FIRST VIBRANTLY COLOURED CERAMIC

HUBLOT “There is a quote which perfectly illustrates our ongoing desire to push watchmaking, materials, and fusion to the limit. A conviction that nothing is impossible. In the words of Charlie Chaplin: "Let us strive for the impossible. The great achievements throughout history have been the conquest of what seemed the impossible". Today, with the world's first vibrantly coloured ceramic, Hublot has once again demonstrated that the impossible really is possible!” Ricardo Guadalupe, CEO of Hublot

A

lways unique, always different. This time, Hublot has devoted its innovative approach to ceramic. By creating a new material – the first vibrantly coloured ceramic – Hublot has once again used its limitless imagination to achieve a world’s first. Exclusively designed and produced in-house, in the Hublot Research & Development (R&D) department, this invention has been patented. A triple tour de force, the coloured ceramic invented by Hublot is innovative both in terms of the material itself, and the manufacturing process. In addition to the vibrant colour it is also harder than conventional ceramics.

Hublot brings depths of colour to ceramic The Hublot R&D department and Metallurgy & Materials laboratory have succeeded in inventing a magic formula that allows the creation of vibrantly coloured ceramics. This has previously not been done in industries using technical and aesthetic ceramics. In addition, Hublot has refined all the procedures necessary to produce every component of the watch case from this special material. In total, it took Hublot four years to master this discovery and develop it from initial idea to its industrialisation. The invention is 100% Hublot and the expertise has been patented. Hublot continues to make strides in the research into materials. This newly developed ceramic is incredibly dense, boasting a hardness of 1500 HVI compared to 1200 HV2 of conventional ceramics. This results in an extremely resilient material. The colour is achieved through a major innovation whereby a fusion of pressure and heat sinters the ceramic without burning the

Heera Zhaveraat | March - 2018 | 92

pigments. Having mastered the basic hues with this method Hublot is now ready to introduce a whole new world of coloured ceramics to its watch collections. The first vibrant colour release is vibrant red, which also increases the harness of the Hublot ceramic.

The power of red For this first coloured ceramic, Hublot has chosen a vivid red, which symbolises power, passion and glory. The Big Bang Unico Red Magic is undoubtedly an ultra-resilient ceramic watch full of fire. With just 500 pieces released, its 45 mm case and bezel are made from Hublot's patented red ceramic, boasting a polished finish. The flange, indexes, minute and seconds counters, Arabic numerals and hands all match this hue, adorned in the same red to highlight the contrast with the mechanism of the Unico HUB124 manufacture movement and its column wheel, visible on the dial side through the sapphire crystal. This theme encompasses the entire watch, matched with a lined structured red rubber strap. Drawing attention from every angle, and captivating all who see it, the red ceramic is set to be a showstopper. A major invention which once again demonstrates that Hublot is continuously pushing its Art of Fusion further, and that, under its impetus, the world of materials and alloys will never cease to be reinvented. This is a material true to the Hublot motto: "be the first, be unique, be different!” n

Balthazar ‘B4’ & ‘B5’: Two new editions Are you currently living on planet Earth? If so, you certainly haven’t missed the latest episode of Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

W

hether you absolutely love, moderately appreciate or just hate the saga, we all have in common the never-ending search for a hero. Our hero is without a doubt a robot from Tatooine – an adventurer despite himself, who lost an arm on the battlefield and was built by Anakin himself: C-3PO. Inspired by this gold humanoid robot, L’Epée has developed a very special gold edition of Balthazar: ‘B4’, limited to 20 pieces. His brother, straight out of the dark side, Balthazar B5, features a fully black PVD armor and a light palladium-plated movement. The balance between light and dark side is respected. Balthazar B4 and B5 are respectively the fourth and fifth, final editions of Balthazar: after blue, black and green editions, the B4 / B5 limited editions are now fully gold plated, from head to toe and fully black (except movement that couldn’t be PVD due to technical reasons). Unlike C-3PO, these new editions may not be fluent in six million forms of communication, but they can indicate the moon phase with extreme accuracy: all he needs is a single day of adjustment after 122 years! They will also unfailingly tell you the time. Standing nearly 40 centimetres tall (16 inches), Balthazar is composed of 618 beautifully finished, micro-engineered components. More specifically, Balthazar is a sophisticated high-precision robot clock displaying “slow” jumping hours and trailing minutes via two discs on his chest. A power reserve indicator is located on his belly – he boasts an impressive monthbusting 35 days of power reserve. His friendly face may seem serene, but he remains nonetheless always on guard: his red eyes, which continually scan the surroundings, are actually 20-second retrograde displays. But beware… there is also a dark side to Balthazar, as there is in all of us. Balthazar rotates around the hips like the high-precision machine that he is; you can feel the miniscule bumps of each micro-roller as he turns, and each distinct notch when he rotates the full 180°. Then everything changes: smiling Balthazar becomes rather terrifying. To quote another Star Wars figure, the infamous Darth Vader: "If you only knew the power of the dark side.” On this side, the nature of Balthazar's darkness is revealed by the cold hard skull with menacing teeth and deep-set ruby-red eyes. Fortunately, it's not all threat here as Balthazar's chest also contains the moon phase display. You can adjust the moon phase manually, providing one of many of Balthazar's tactile pleasures.

Balthazar does more than display horological events: as well as rotating around the hips, his arms articulate at both the shoulders and the elbows, and his hands can clasp and hold objects. Finally, Balthazar's shield conceals and protects the secret of his awesome power: an integrated clock-winding and time-setting key. Balthazar B4 is a limited gold-plated edition of just 20 pieces. Balthazar B5 is a limited palladium-plated movement and black PVD armor edition of 20 pieces. n

nfluenced by Wassily Kandinsky’s Basic Shape Test, the Weimar Calendar is a harmonious blend of design homage and precise functional utility. A 42 mm solid stainless steel case with a sleek urban profile houses a sweep hand quartz movement that indicates day, date and 24 hour display with the fluid graceful movement of the second creating a quiet flow of elegance. “Kehren Aus Zweiter” at the 1 o’clock position circles back to the German roots and provenance of the Weimar Calendar indicating this watch as a sweep second hand timepiece. Lightly etched into the watch are three iconic shapes of the Square, Circle and Equilateral triangle creating in step a Bauhaus inspired graphic design of their own. Each line of brushed and polished finish is carefully and thoughtfully articulated to produce a watch that is beautifully executed in composition, fabrication and balance. With a caseback that reference this most Bauhaus of iconography the Weimar Calendar hones in on the beautiful while paying tribute to the cerebral. n

The AV-4052 seemingly brings the instrument panel and cockpit of the Hawker Hunter to the wrist of the wearer with a homage and representation that is still utterly practical and balanced as a timepiece.

HAWKER HUNTER

With the angled off squared shape that echoes the key pieces of the Hunters own instrumentation, the reference to the famed military jet that first flew in service for the RAF in the early 1950s, is obvious. A sturdy yet precisely finished marine grade stainless steel case houses a Japanese retrograde split time chronograph that sits under the dial. The dial itself is a perfectly designed assembly of indentations, tension rings and carefully positioned subdial frames that continue the look and feel of this

CENTENARY 1920s EDITION

watch as a piece of military instrumentation. Outlined hands are bold yet skeletonized to offer clarity and visibility of all subdials on the multi-layered dial that offers depth and detail for the wearer. With piston like pushers and level upon level of Hunter inspired aesthetic touches, the AV 4052 pays suitable tribute to the famed jet without being cluttered and fussy in its carefully considered design. Snugly strapped to the wrist with a hand stitched vintage genuine leather strap – the AV 4052 is an impressive, functional and unique aviation inspired timepiece like no other.

CENTENARY 1940s EDITION

The 1920s edition of the Centenary Flyboy collection interprets the field or pilot watch through the prism of early military watchmaking. Perfectly proportioned and sized, the 42 mm diameter 316 L Stainless steel case is affixed with a scratch resistant slightly domed sapphire lens and see through exhibition caseback. A vintage inspired slightly oversized “pumpkin” crown is used, reminiscent of those found on early pocket watch to wrist watch conversions in the early 1900s. The crown in addition to its serrated edge design has the blue and round circles of the Royal Air Force roundel applied as an epoxy filled cabochon. The dial is explicitly a homage to 1920s watch and typeface design. Neo-gothic fonts mark out the hours with ample super LumiNova for enhanced low light visibility. Railroad minute markings frame the dial suitably. Cathedral or squelette hour and minute hands have been chosen, reminiscent of watches of the era,as well as to provide clarity and legibility in time readout. Powering the timepiece is the reliable Miyota 8218 uniquely customized by the Avi-8’s own watchmakers with a signature “Centenary” edition rotor and subdial seconds display at the 5 o’clock position, with date display at the 3 o’clock position. Echoing the earliest iterations of pilot watches as refashioned pocket watches the robust shape of the 1920s edition is as much a bookmark within the history of watch design as it is a functional and robust field watch. Hugging the watch to the wearers wrist is sturdy yet supple handstitched buffalo hide leather strap that is comfortable yet long lasting .

ROAD RACER FAS C I NATI O N F O R AM E R I CAN V I NTAG E CAR The Road Racer collection marks the debut of Le Rhöne’s first timepiece collection. With direct references to the Pony cars of the 1960’s inspired by Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros or Dodge Challengers, the design of the Road Racer chronographs cultivate the fascination for American Vintage Car to be worn on the wrist exclusively. The genuine engine parts of the first generation of Camaros can be found inside the case of the watch. The two counters put at 9 o’clock and 3 o’clock respectively indicating the seconds and the chronograph bi-compax indicators enhance the sports look of the watch to perfection. The Road Racer full collection is offered in different color combinations, including rose gold and stainless steel, with or without black DLC coating for every style to match and every man to love.

PAUL WILD CELEBRATES THE GODDESS IN EVERY WOMAN “THE GODDESS DOESN’T ENTER US FROM OUTSIDE; SHE EMERGES FROM DEEP WITHIN. SHE IS NOT HELD BACK BY WHAT HAPPENED IN TH E PAST. SHE IS CONCEIVED IN CONSCIOUSNESS, BORN IN LOVE, AND NURTURED BY HIGHER THINKING. SHE IS INTEGRITY AND VALUE, CREATED AND SUSTAINED BY TH E HARD WORK OF PERSONAL GROWTH AND THE DISCIPLINE OF A LIFE LIVED ACTIVELY IN HOPE.”

AMERICAN SPIRITUAL AUTHOR MARIANNE WI LLIAMSON 2018 is set to be significant for women around the world. A growing awareness of women’s issues is sounding a call to action that is empowering women in the workplace, in government and in their public and private lives. Paul Wild has chosen the theme of the goddess in every woman to inspire its diverse and dynamic collection of gemstones in a range of colours, with a focus on blue, green and red hues seen in Pantone’s spring 2018 fashion colour palette. The freedom of women to be themselves and to pursue their dreams is playing out in evolving ideals of femininity and how women express that in their personal style. “Every woman should feel like a goddess and every goddess has her own unique qualities, talents and strengths to celebrate,” says CEO Markus Paul Wild. “What was empowering to us in selecting this theme was to create designs that were graceful yet bold, that explore different shades and shapes in gemstones like tanzanite, emerald, and various tourmalines and spinels. The magnetic energy of passion and purpose that is the goddess in every woman draws people in. That is what we strive to inspire in our colourful gemstone layouts.” Colour continues to be a key influencer of fashion trends for spring 2018. For the first time in the 23 years since Pantone began identifying its top 10 hues, the Pantone Color Institute announced 16 colours for the season, which Wild says bodes well for the colour variations and combinations it inspires for gemstone jewellery designers.

WHAT TO BUY IN BASELWORLD INTENSE LUMINESCENCE

SEEING RED Dramatic, warm and eye catching, red is the colour of passion, desire, romance and love. Emotional and intense, red is energising and motivates us to action. It increases the pulse and heart rate and boosts metabolism. Forming the outer arc of the rainbow, red signifies a pioneering spirit, inspiring courage and strength. Envisioning images of jewels befitting the goddess of love and passion, Aphrodite, Paul Wild has created layouts featuring red and pink spinels from Tanzania. Most notable is a set of nine heart-shaped red spinels totalling more than 112 carats; a flower-inspired earring layout with 80 mauve spinels weighing over 21 carats with two tanzanites totalling 9.78 carats; and two single red spinels: a 17.15-carat marquise-cut spinel and 11.67-carat heart-shaped spinel. “Spinel has an immense range of shades, from purple to violet and mauve to pure red,” explains Markus Wild, who notes that spinels in sizes over 5 carats are rare on the market. “We have single stones and sets in captivating red, but also layouts in the softer shades of violet and mauve. We love spinel because of its intense luminescence. Its brilliance, even in more muted colours, adds a lot of beauty and sophistication to a design.”

IMAGINATION AND INSPIRATION

SINGING THE BLUES Blue represents trust, loyalty, wisdom, stability, truth and faith.

Blue is the colour of the sea and the sky. It is associated with open spaces, freedom, imagination and inspiration. Blue represents trust, loyalty, wisdom, stability, truth and faith. The colour blue is fundamentally important to the human eye as a stable icon of the balance in our universe. Even in an uncertain world, we remember that the blue skies represent constancy, as they’ve neverfallen! Summoning images of jewels befitting Amphitrite, goddess of the sea, Paul Wild has created stunning tanzanite layouts in colours from cool lilac blue to deep violet blue and in a mix of shapes. One of the most notable storyboards in this colour is an outstanding 31-piece necklace, earring and ring suite of natural tanzanite totalling nearly 252 carats. Equally tantalising is a four-row tanzanite and rubellite wave bracelet layout composed of 78 pieces totalling nearly 144 carats; tanzanite and red spinel chandelier earrings totalling 51 carats; and an 82-carat cushion-cut tanzanite cabochon that awaits to be transformed into a magical creation. “Sapphire is limited in big sizes and in quantity for layouts. In this case, tanzanite is the winner,” says Markus Wild. “The combination with red in the use of rubellite is a connection to the three classic colours we are highlighting for the season.” One mine in Tanzania, providing a good supply of this popular gem. In the Pantone palette for spring, blue is represented in a navy Sailor Blue and a sky blue Little Boy Blue. Furthermore, the Pantone Colour of the Year, Ultra Violet, is a bluebased purple.

A life-affirming shade, green is emblematic of vitality and the pursuit of one’s passions.

Imagining the jewels that might adorn the earth goddess Artemis, Paul Wild has designed a bold, organic bib-style necklace layout featuring 208 Zambian emerald cabochons and nine faceted pink tourmalines totalling nearly 358 carats; and a multi-row organic bracelet layout of 113 Zambian emerald cabochons weighing nearly 315 carats with a 25.65carat rubellite. Such a stunning collection of emeralds is unusual to find. In the Pantone palette for spring, green is reflected in Arcadia, described as sweet green perfection! This blue-green colour is a cross between an emer ald gr een and a mint green.

PANTONE’S C OLOUR OF THE YEAR

ULTRA VIOLET Inventive and imaginative, Ultra Violet is Pantone’s 2018 Colour of the Year. As Pantone describes, Ultra Violet is complex and contemplative. This blue-based purple suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible. Historically, there has been a mystical or spiritual quality attached to Ultra Violet. The colour is often associated with mindfulness practices, which offer a higher ground to those seeking refuge from today’s over-stimulated world. The use of purple-toned lighting in meditation spaces and other gathering places energises the comm unities that gather there and inspire connection.

In the Pantone palette are lighter shades in this colour range — Spring Crocus and Pink Lavender. In this spectrum of hues, Paul Wild has brought together outstanding sapphire and amethyst layouts. A bold, daring necklace and earring layout featuring amethyst cabochon and navette-cut stones totalling nearly 190 carats with a 139-carat amethyst carved rose pendant exudes romance and femininity. Reflecting vintage flair is a 47-piece old-cut amethyst and morganite suite totalling over 189 carats designed in cascading gem collar and earrings with ring stone. Also goddess worthy, a glorious bib-style necklace and chandelier earring suite composed of 460 briolette-cut sapphires from Madagascar in shades from pink to violet, totalling nearly 175 carats; and bold earring set topped with two sapphires weighing nearly 56 carats and dangling 74 sapphir es totalling o ver 48 car ats.
