Kumar House, Mumbai

Interior Design project in collaboration with Hardik Dedhia

The project involved designing a duplex for the Kumar family on the 15th and 16th floor of a high rise building in Malabar Hill. The family consisting of ten members required two bedrooms, two suite rooms, two living spaces, dining area, home theatre, kitchen and maid quarters. The suite rooms would be divided into two bedrooms; one for kids and one for adults. The design includes two separate living rooms on each floor as well as a home theatre/guest room on the lower floor. The main family spaces are concentrated on the lower floor. The balcony includes a covered water body which would act as a cooling agent against Mumbai’s heat and adds to the aesthetic of the living space. These are some Concept Designs for the same.

Phahurat Asian Cultural Centre and Plaza,Bangkok Sem ll, Third Year B.arch

Bangkok is a global city in every aspect. Its acceptance of world culture has given it an identity which is more global than local. This evolution of Bangkok’s identity is largely due to the fact that there are a large number of migrants from India and China residing in the city. The local language itself is considered as an amalgamation of Sanskrit and Chinese. Hence, there has been a coalescence of culture and identities that has taken place over a large period of time. It has resulted in a very homogeneous experience of city life. Going forward, Bangkok will evolve further as it gets introduced to different cultures and beliefs. The project is an attempt to understand identity using adjectives to describe an existing condition and an operative on the site. Experimentation using these adjectives enables the project to attain its own identity and language. Circulation , structure and material expression were used to create the language of the building. The two words used to describe the site chosen in this project are coalescence and evolution.

The box is an part of an experiment in which the two words are to be explained using an installation. The box is just a device through which the installation is viewed. The installation is made of watchmaker sticks and straws to explain different stages of evolution and coalescence.

Site Plan The project is an attempt to create temporary housing and infrastructure for the Kumbh Mela. The studio also had an added parameter of understanding and using prefabricated elements in the design. The Kumbh Mela is considered the largest peaceful gathering in the world which lasts for about 2 months every 4 years and is attended by 10 million pilgrims. The action of dipping oneself in the holy water allows the Hindus to wash away their sins. Thus people have a desire to be purified by bathing in the sacred water during the Mela. The Kumbh Mela signifies the search of the pilgrims to be pure. To be pure is considered to be divine, the ideal Understanding Temple Architecture form. The space created tries to reflect the aspirations of the people who are going to live in it. The space tries to acquire the quality of divinity by inferring from ancient religious ideas about how a sacred space is created. The site posed an interesting challenge with respect to the organisation of temporary infrastructure and amenities on a very large scale. The most important aspect of this site was that it had the flexibility to handle the flux of people traveling for the Kumbh Mela and also act as an agricultural and during the interim period.

The Water Link: Alternate Healing and Research Centre, Vrajreshwari Sem l, Third Year B.arch

The project aspires to create a public realm which is capable of attracting both tourists and the local community. Water from the river is channeled through the building acting as a connect between the public and the private spaces. This project was a part of third year studio which focused on exploration of diagrams and design through models.

Bhopal Diaries: Wetland Conservation and Research Centre, Prempura, Bhopal Sem ll, Fourth Year B.arch

The project involved studying as well as providing alternative ideas for conservation and restoration of Bhoj wetlands. The main aim of the project was to create awareness among villagers about the wetlands and their importance to a balanced ecosystem. The design revolves mainly around circulation with respect to the path connecting the two villages on site and manipulating the path in such a way that it encourages villagers to walk through and hence, acquaint themselves with the institute and what it does on a daily basis.

Building Narratives : The Storyteller, Harihareshwar Sem ll, First Year B.arch

This project involved building narratives around characters we observed from our study trip to Harihareshwar. The character which i chose to build a narrative around was a buggy owner(Naresh) who used to ply his trade on the beaches of Harihareshwar. He would meet different people from all over the world and they would share their stories with him along with taking his buggy for a spin all at just Rs.10. My narrative involved how Naresh eventually decided to leave his small town and follow his dream of living in the city. How things don’t plan out the way he dreamed and he ended up living on the road. Too embarrassed to go back to his hometown, Naresh was left with nothing but the stories that he had heard in his previous job. The project involves providing basic shelter for him along with a means for him to earn a livelihood. To earn a livelihood through his stories, Naresh would move from playground to playground telling stories to small children who would huddle up around him and listen. The design brief required a mobile home which would be easy to be taken around from place to place. The final design is that of 1 meter dia geometric ball which can be rolled around wherever the storyteller would want to take it. The ball would open up into a 3m x 3m tent. The design provided storage, bathing and living facilities. The petals of the ball had cushions so that the children could sit on them while listening to the storyteller walking around on the base.

The Graft, Khechuperi Village, Sikkim Sem lll, Second Year B.arch

The project involved a personal understanding of the conditions prevailing on site. Khechuperi village, unlike the other villages of Sikkim, had not undergone drastic changes when tourism became a rage all over Sikkim. It is still relatively new to tourism since there is no easy access route. However, small seeds of tourism had already been sown and it seemed to be on similar trajectory as that of other villages where tourism became the primary mode of income and local traditions eventually fade away. To enable a more smoother transformation and supporting the locals in keeping the sanctity of their land, the project proposes to become a graft. The project involves refinement plant cum exhibition gallery where local produce is refined and packaged while at the same time the entire process is open to the tourists to observe and learn. There is an exhibition gallery as well which displays handicrafts and works of local artists and traders.
