ou’ve been accepted here, so we know you’re pretty smart.
You don’t need us to tell you that the ways in which we communicate are changing. That’s why our mission here at the Temple School of Media and Communication (SMC) is to connect the lessons of the past to the rapidly changing technology of the present and future and to prepare you for a career in the exciting and dynamic world of media and communication by immersing you in it. Look around you. Smart phones. Laptops. Tablets. Interactive Television. They’re each changing the way we interact. And their potential is only beginning to be realized. The communication landscape has shifted more in the past five years than in the 25 years previous. Not too long ago, getting ideas published was a painstaking process. And even when they were, the print medium had limitations in its reach. Today, anyone can publish their ideas free online, and reach billions of people in a matter of seconds. With tools like these, and more sure to come, your generation has the incredible opportunity to redefine communication.
— Confucius
He’s still being quoted after thousands of years, so he must have been on to something. Sure, things are different now, and many older forms of communication may seem dated to you. But although the technology may change, the principles of media and communication are still the same. Whether it’s read on paper or on an iPad, the qualities that make up a good press release are the same. HD screens can enhance good broadcasting, but they don’t make the work good. And long before Twitter, a good, attention-getting headline was less than 140 characters. Our professors will lay for you the foundations of communication, giving you the knowledge, tools, and confidence to step into the real world as an innovator. You’ll learn to lead, work with others, manage communications within organizations, and communicate strategically. When you leave here you won’t just be adapting to new trends, you’ll be making them.

“You don’t learn to walk by following rules. You learn by doing, and by falling over.” ~ Richard Branson
But in order to CREATE your own path — you must understand that these opportunities aren’t given.
The best teacher is experience. That’s what we believe.
Learn by doing. Take what you learn in the classroom to go out and experience real scenarios, working with real professionals, while still in college. That’s the way we do things here at SMC.
The philosophy is simple.
they’re made.
We provide you with an education that will prepare you to go out into the real world and thrive. Our professors will open your mind to trusted wisdom and experimental thinking. And you’ll be tapping into your creativity both in and out of the classroom as you explore exciting new ways to apply that knowledge. When you get your first job, there should be no learning curve.
“The lessons I learned in the Communication Studies program extended far beyond lecture slides… they taught me how to be a professional.” ~ Charisma Williams, Class of ‘06
Some of the best and the brightest minds both in and out of the classroom are here. Professors here don’t just teach the textbooks, they write them, and share experience from their lives working in the industry today. The case studies you’ll see are their case studies. No one knows the field like the people working at leading broadcast networks, advertising agencies, public relations firms, and production houses.

The city is yours. USE IT. You can’t learn how to make it in the real world by going to school in a bubble. Real experiences prepare you for real life challenges. And with our prime location right on Broad Street in Philadelphia, Temple is as real as it gets.

We aren’t just a school that resides within city limits.
Much in the same way the city’s attitude and work ethic has shaped us as a university.

Philadelphia helps create our curriculum. You’ll learn by getting out and exploring a city in the midst of a cultural renaissance and taking advantage of the opportunities that you will have to contribute to that renaissance. Internships. Jobs. You name it. You can find it here. When you’re broadcasting from our student-run radio station or our TV network, you’ll be heard by the world, not just your friends in the dorms. And when you’re looking for an internship, you’ll find everything from start-ups to established media and communication leaders right down the street. Your professors here will be your bridge to the city, helping guide you to where the opportunities are. You’ll learn from their knowledge, and you’ll be able to take advantage of their connections here in the city. As the saying goes: “It’s not just what you know, it’s also who you know.”
In a city where 1 in 7 college graduates earned their degrees at Temple, you’ll come to know a lot of people in your time here.

There’s a certain attitude here. Students understand that those who make it in the world of media and communication are those who can tell a story, and those who are driven to tell their own. The fundamentals of communication learned from our faculty provide a solid base of knowledge to begin creating and exploring your passions. But after that, it’s time to get out there—time to have some fun and get your hands dirty. We understand that the rapidly changing world of communications needs people who don’t just adapt to new trends. They create them. Take, for example, Julia Nietsch (’07), the Manager of Communications at Bravo at NBC Universal Inc., and Tamron Hall (’93), a national correspondent for NBC’s Today, and host of NewsNation with Tamron Hall on MSNBC. Each came to Temple with incredible drive and determination. We helped them focus their passions, and gave them the knowledge and experience to get a head start in their pursuit of their dreams. As a student, you’ll have every opportunity to tell your own story. Our student-run organizations allow you to practice in a professional atmosphere right on campus. And our campuses in Rome and Japan, as well as our Study Away programs in New York City, London, Dublin, and South Africa give you the chance to broaden your horizons and study media and communication in different cultures and settings. Working on projects for class is a great exercise, and there is no substitute for the level of knowledge you’ll receive from your professors here, but ask any Temple students, faculty, or alumni, and they’ll tell you only a real-world education can prepare you for real-world challenges.
