Celebration Time

S

ummer is my favorite time of the year because of all the festivities and celebrations: graduation parties, wedding receptions, July 4th picnics and fireworks, and the merry annual bash at my home for my staff and their families. There isn’t a lot of good news about the housing industry, but there is a lot to cheer about when it comes to building products, materials, and technologies. Here are just a few examples of new or revamped products introduced during the past year that are worth celebrating: ■ The iconic Kohler Wellworth toilet, which is 75 years old, sports an updated look and a WaterSense-certified model at 1.28 gallons per flush. ■ TimberTech’s Earthwood Evolutions is the first fully capped composite deck board that is thoroughly protected from the elements, according to its maker. Its 25-year stain and fade warranty and exotic good looks have deck builders applauding. ■ USG’s Sheetrock Ultralight Panels are the lightest ½-inch gypsum wallboard panels available, the manufacturer says, and stronger pound for pound than competitive products. Tool makers—especially Bosch, DeWalt, Duo-Fast, M. Power Tools, Paslode, and Ridgid—deserve special recognition because these major brands continue to conceive

products with technological and ergonomic advances, but with little or no extra cost over previous models. All the products and manufacturers I mentioned here, and dozens more, are winners of B P’ Most Valuable Product Award. The annual MVP program recognizes new or revamped products and materials that help you run your business more efficiently, cut labor costs or installation times, make your work easier or less physically demanding, or just make your clients say “wow!” (See all the winners starting on page 12.) I am delighted that 10 out of the 30 MVP winners earned a special “green” designation by our panel of judges. Although green building is the most-talked-about trend in the lackluster housing industry, many builders and remodelers haven’t embraced the movement for one reason or another. Nevertheless, homeowners and buyers are demanding green products (at least ones that save energy or water), so you need to educate yourself about the leading ones. I know some contractors don’t want to try new wares at a time when making even a small mistake could be very costly. Nevertheless, this year’s MVP winners can help you be more productive, save time and money, make customers happy, and maybe even make you more money.

Lenox. Tackling a common user frustration, the bi-metal Speed Slot hole saw offers easier plug removal, thanks to a staircase slot that is wider and placed lower on the saw with multiple leverage points; the slot also removes dust and chips during cutting to further ensure smooth plug extraction. An enhanced tooth form, thin kerf, and advanced coating combine for more efficient, faster cutting, says the firm, thereby generating less heat and doubling the saw’s life span versus the previous model. Leather-Look Beauties Granite fabricators are offering a “leathered” finish, honing the polish off stone slabs for a slight texture that won’t show water spots. “You can take an absolute black and [make] it look like a leather sofa,” says Debbie Comito of Comito Building and Design in Colorado, who suggests using polished granite on perimeter countertops and a leathered-look slab on kitchen islands. Textured granite is slightly more susceptible to stains and scratches and costs about $5 to $10 more per square foot than a polished finish, fabricators say. udging by this year’s Most Valuable Product Award winners, a sluggish economy hasn’t stopped building product manufacturers from unveiling a slate of innovative products to satisfy and excite a weary market. This year’s MVP honorees represent a diverse group boasting an array of valuable attributes—from stunning aesthetics to time-saving technologies to simple solutions for old problems. Building Products challenged our judging panel—made up of pros like you—to single out entries that are most valuable to the contractor, either by reducing installation time, callbacks, and

A.O. Smith. Combining a tankless engine and a small buffer tank, the NEXT hybrid water heater installs much like a conventional model, using PVC venting and standard ½-inch gas connections. It uses exhaust gas from the tankless engine to transfer heat into the water stored in the buffer tank, operating at 90% thermal efficiency, compared to a conventional water heater, which typically hits 78%, or a standard tankless unit’s 82%. Propex. NapaWrap Coastal housewrap, designed especially for areas that experience severe weather, keeps water out but allows moisture vapor to escape from the inside of the wall exterior. A judge liked the “tear-free guarantee,” which says if the housewrap tears under normal use according to manufacturer’s guidelines, the company will replace it for free. An energy usage study by an architectural/engineering firm showed annual heating and cooling cost savings of at least 17% and up to 30% (depending on climate zone) for SRT windows versus ASHRAE 90.1-2004 standard glazings, the maker claims. Windows with the film vary their tint level based on the directness of the sun, maintaining the view while decreasing solar heat gain. The film also blocks more than 99% of ultraviolet light, protecting carpeting and fabrics. “I really like the possibilities this product has to offer,” said a judge. Cosella-Dörken. The problem: capillary wicking in fully insulated basement walls, trapping moisture behind the vapor barrier and leading to mold, rot, and structural decay. The solution: the Delta footing barrier, installed in freshly poured concrete footings and designed to act as a capillary break between the footings and the foundation wall. The three-ply sheet membrane consists of a polyester needle-punched fabric, a polyethylene barrier, and an anti-slip surface layer. “A smart construction practice,” one judge said. USG. Sheetrock Ultralight Panels are the lightest ½-inch gypsum wallboard panels available, the manufacturer says, and stronger pound for pound than competitive products. Contractors who use the panels instead of ⅝-inch type X board or ½-inch interior ceiling board may find cost savings and will definitely save their backs, too, said Mike Pahl of A&B Drywall in Menomonee Falls, Wis., in a written statement. “I have heard numbers that you are saving a ton of lifting per day [by using this product]. That’s basically a car that you are not lifting over your head. So it’s certainly going to save on our worker’s comp, help the crews stay healthy,” and cause less downtime due to injury. With up to 95% recycled content, the panels are the first product to earn UL Environment’s Gold Level Certification for environmentally preferable gypsum board. 2011 Rinnai. Working in tandem with the manufacturer’s tankless water heater, the hydronic furnace produces hydronic heat that is less dry than heat from traditional furnaces. The unit uses hot water from the water heater to heat the air, which is then distributed via the unit’s blower and the home’s existing ductwork. It’s “truly unique,” a judge commented. Because it requires neither venting and gas connections nor complex wiring, the furnace can even be installed in attics or closets. A

number of leading green building programs have adopted the ASHRAE 62.2 standard that calls for constant air movement throughout an ultra-tight new home. An energy recovery ventilator or a central exhaust system will fulfill this whole-house ventilation requirement, but a single, relatively inexpensive bath fan can do the job—that is, if it’s smart enough. Manufacturers including Broan-NuTone, Panasonic, and Air King have surpassed this whole-home challenge with fans that leave homeowners out of the equation entirely. These units can communicate with each other; know when to cycle 80 cfm and when to drop to 40 cfm; and can factor dew point, occupancy, and humidity into how long and fast to run. Broan-NuTone’s SmartSense technology, for example, ties fans in multiple bathrooms together via wires servicing other systems in the home to share the daily air-exchange requirement and evenly distribute airflow. “The key is that they all talk to each other,” says Pat Nielsen, marketing manager for ventilation fans at Broan-NuTone. “Instead of one running at 60 cfm all the time, these fans will talk to each other and take turns.” When a bather turns a fan on, it remembers how long it ran at a higher cfm and deducts the time from the home’s daily requirement. The sister fans then run less throughout the day to avoid over ventilation, says Nielsen. “It’s great for the builder because there is no extra low-voltage wiring to install to get them to communicate,” he adds. A time delay leaves it running at that level for up to an hour before slowing back down to the pre-set continuous speed. “You have a fan that can be a whole-house indoor air quality fan but also a bath fan depending if you’re in the bathroom,” says Jim Shelton, national sales manager for Panasonic. “The homeowner doesn’t have to worry ‘Did I turn the fan on? Did I not turn it off? Am I using it enough?’ The fan does the job for you.” With bath fans running non-stop, energy efficiency and noise level matter more than ever. A DC motor in a WhisperGreen fan draws the energy equivalent of a night light at low speed, according to Panasonic. To meet green building standards, round-theclock fans must operate at no louder than 1.0 sone, and some are even quieter. For instance, the AKF100D Deluxe Quiet dual-speed exhaust fan from Air King runs at a barely audible 0.3 sone in continuous mode. Smart controls and DC-powered technology come at a premium price. But as air quality becomes increasingly important for owners of super-insulated homes, one bathroom fan can free a whole house of off-gassing, formaldehydes, chemicals, and humid air, manufacturers claim. “More and more you’re hearing people say ‘Build tight and ventilate right,’” says Shelton. —Evelyn Royer

hen builders think of going green in coming years, which products are they most likely to put into their homes? After low-E windows, it’s engineered wood beams, trusses, and joists, a National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) survey found. “It’s by far the material of the future,” says builder Al Durden of SF Communities in Macon, Ga., adding he’ll never go back to dimensional lumber for roof trusses or floor joists even though I-joists and LVL trusses cost more up front. “When you factor in the time you save, the less material waste, it’s cheaper to use engineered wood by far.” APA-The Engineered Wood Association predicts I-joist usage in new single-family homes’ floors, which shrank from 52% in 2008 to 43% last year, will climb back to 49% by 2014. Engineered wood products (EWP)

are a more logical choice now that 20 states have adopted the 2009 International Energy Conservation Code (IECC), which calls for homes to be 15% more energy efficient than those built to the previous code. To bolster R-values, iLevel by Weyerhaeuser introduced TJ Insulated rim boards and structural corners backed with foam to achieve thermal values of R-10 and R-30, respectively, and a header that sandwiches insulation between LSL and OSB for a R-17 factor. Similar products such as rSTUD headers by EC Manufacturing, ExpressHeaders by SJS Components, and Ray-Core’s header systems offer more ways to meet the code. routing ducts through EWP trusses between the first and second floors rather than putting them in cold basements and hot attics. Boise thinks its system can cut a home’s energy bill by 35%. “The energy codes are becoming more and more stringent, so builders are trying to find the most cost-effective ways to meet those energy codes,” observes LP Building Products director of corporate marketing Rusty Carroll. And none too soon: The International Code Council (ICC) plans to tighten requirements in the 2012 IECC to boost energy efficiency by another 15%.

TIME SAVERS Another way EWP win paybacks is by saving builders work. Pre-cut I-joists, pre-fabricated floor systems, and lumber labeled with its precise location in the field enable the project to come together in a fraction of the time, says dealer Brad Butts, products manager at Atlanta-based Lummus Supply. Most EWP manufacturers offer downloadable design software systems, like iLevel’s Nextphase Site Solutions. Take-offs and design schemes link the framing plans to the saw and can save up to 50% construction time compared with standard framing practices, says iLevel’s Don Schwabe, director of marketing and U.S. sales for EWP. When the dealer delivers the stacks, he

says, “builders simply put it together like a Lego building. It’s very, very simple.” High-tech cutters are not the only way to shave time. Rosboro took out steps for builders and dealers with the X-Beam, an architecturally finished glulam beam in full 3½- and 5½-inch widths. “As an industry, this is something we’ve been asked for years: ‘Why doesn’t glulam match up with standard wall widths?’” says Rosboro’s glulam sales manager, David Smith. With the time-saving advances in EWP, Durden can frame a two-story, 5,000-squarefoot house in three and a half days; with dimensional lumber, it takes about three weeks, he says. But faster construction time is not the only reason EWP is fast overtaking the conventional methods. “There’s literally a zero-waste factor,” says Durden. “I have more Sheetrock waste than I have lumber waste.” Besides traditional engineered products, Mississippi-based Shuqualak Lumber is experimenting with Scrimtec, which is manufactured from immature pine cuttings. There’s also Lamboo LVB, laminated veneer bamboo beams and trusses. Although builder Durden loves EWP, he says: “I don’t want everyone else to find out about [EWP] or they’ll be able to build as cost effectively as I do.” —Evelyn Royer. The Search for Siding ONLINE TOOLS HELP REMODELERS ATTRACT WEB-SAVVY CLIENTS WITH INSTANT DESIGN OPTIONS.

A

nn Merino of St. Paul, Minn.-based Twin Cities Siding Professionals captivates homeowners contemplating exterior upgrades with James Hardie’s computerbased design program to show how new siding, trim, windows, shutters, and doors could look on their homes. Free, online design programs that allow homeowners to change the exterior look of their homes—from cladding material to window frame color—with a digital photo and the click of a mouse have been available for more than 10 years. But recently, siding manufacturers have invested in improving the tools as more remodelers use them to tip the scales against their competition by catering to homeowners’ desire to add curb appeal, visualize more options, and picture the end result. Many of the online tools are free, but enhanced pro versions to use in-house cost around $500. While ideal for retrofit projects, new-home builders also can use the technology to upload drawings in the design stages. “The homeowner is spending a lot of time researching what materials and siding are best for their home,” says Sean Gadd, trim business unit manager for James Hardie. “All you need to do is go to Google and type in ‘siding’ and you can get drunk on the information.” Even though the new wave of Internet-educated

clients irritates some pros like exterior remodeler Cameron Robidoux of Robidoux Brothers in New Berlin, Wisc., he has turned to online tools like the Dream Designer from Exterior Porfolio by Crane to attract business. “If we’re at a home show we can use it as a tool for, ‘Hey, go onto our website; you can tinker around with what your house could look like,’ ” says Robidoux, “or you can use it after you’re already in the home and the homeowners are unsure of what colors would look best on their house.” Remodelers can embed programs like Dream Designer into their websites to draw potential clients and keep them there. Jim Ziminski, president of Exterior Portfolio by Crane, says its Web diagnostics show site visitors stay an average of 60 minutes on the Dream Designer page. At Twin Cities Siding, office manager Merino employs the pro version of the James Hardie Design Center program to upload a photo of a client’s home and then “masks out” tree limbs and bushes—anything that should not get covered with siding—and in about 15 to 20 minutes has the façade ready for swapping materials instantly. “The prep work takes the longest,” says Merino. “Then if the homeowner says, ‘Now I want to see my house with blue siding,’ it takes two seconds, and then I e-mail them a picture.” The contractor offers the service for ❯❯

To show products from its 10 largest vendor partners, national distributor Norandex created its HomeVisions Design Visualization Tool. “We’ve been able to expand our HomeVisions tool to be much more than just a vinyl siding tool, but windows, roofing, stone, and shutters, in multiple brands,” says Van Garber, vice president of marketing. “We are getting more and more customers interested in using things like this.” HomeVisions generates many customer leads, which the company passes on to local dealers, and beyond: “A neighbor could send [the design] to another neighbor or a relative across town and it should have a snowball effect,” Garber speculates. The Web-based programs also impel consumers to take risks. Merino will often throw in a bold color with the beige options preferred by most homeowners. “It helps them push themselves and be a little more daring,” she says. However, some pros find the programs are too difficult to learn, too costly, and not realistic enough to be worth it. Maintenance fees cost $99 per year for the James Hardie Design Center after the $499 initial price, a deterrent for dealer Patrick Droesch of Florence Corp. in Long Island, N.Y., who believes the tools could never replace seeing and touching samples in a showroom. tudies estimate the market for “smart” gadgets that allow users to remotely access their home’s operations via electronic devices will more than double by 2015 largely due to the ability of these systems to reduce energy use, improve security, and place total home control on the screen of a small phone. The recent explosion in residential products has taken them beyond the realm of luxury home builders into the hands of production builders and remodelers looking for a competitive edge. The latest home automation systems are loaded with high-tech features. For example, systems from companies including Vantage, HAI, and ADT Security Services link security ADT Security Services. The ADT Pulse allows homeowners to control security systems, lighting, thermostats, and small appliances, and view video cameras in real-time via an Internetconnected smartphone from anywhere in the world, claims the company. An appliance/lighting module plugs into outlets enabling the connected appliance, whether a curling iron, crockpot, or lamp, to be turned off or on with a smartphone. 866.746.7238. www.adt.com. Meawhile, systems including the Belwith Products’ SecuRemote technology, Schlage’s LiNK, and the ADT Pulse allow a smartphone to lock doors, grant temporary access, and receive texts when someone enters the home. With live-streaming security camera capability, these systems also can detect flood, fire, or an intruder; take a picture of the situation; and e-mail it to the homeowner. Meanwhile, SecuRemote technology allows a parent to text the door key code to a locked-out child from anywhere with wireless phone service. Finally, when a smartphone is within 100 feet of the door, it communicates directly with the lock through a Bluetooth connection to ensure the lock works even when the Internet does not. Building pros and installers like the new high-tech systems because they are wire-free and easy to install. “Wireless technology certainly streamlines installation,” says electronic systems contractor Rob Dzedzy of

Media Rooms in West Chester, Pa. However, there’s a downside: The router must be fast and able to handle multiple IP addresses, something many home networks cannot do. “Just because it is wireless does not mean it works flawlessly right out of the box,” Dzedzy says. The systems cost $200 to $500 installed, but return on investment is fast, manufacturers say, because they can lower energy costs by controlling the thermostat, monitoring energy use, and turning off lights and appliances in one touch. The ADT Pulse, for instance, will cut an average utility bill by 10% to 20%, helping to recoup the system’s monthly $40 to $57 fee, the company says. The challenge for manufacturers is to change consumer perception that high-tech home control comes with a high price. “The homeowner knows there’s this technology out there,” says Jay Dauksas, sales director at Belwith Products. “They carry their smartphone with them all the time, it’s part of their lives.” And for some of them, smart homes will soon be too. —Evelyn Royer

or the last decade, the efficiency story for dishwashers has been mainly about energy, but in recent years, manufacturers realized that water savings is just as important to sustainability efforts. In fact, the two go hand in hand: The less water an appliance uses, the less there is to heat, and, therefore, the less overall energy used. The government has caught on, too, adding water standards to its dishwasher requirements in 2010, and Energy Star has included water consumption as part of its efficiency equation for the last two years. The efforts are paying off, as today’s dishwashers use 60% less water than they did 10 to 15 years ago.

SUPER SAVERS The good news is, the list of water-efficient dishwashers is vast. Thanks to technology advancements such as soil sensors, most well surpass the current federal standard, and the majority meet or exceed Energy Star requirements. There is also a subset of extremely efficient appliances that qualify for the Consortium of Energy Efficiency ’s (CEE) Super-Efficient Home Appliance (SEHA) program. The initiative calls out products, including dishwashers, that go above and beyond Energy Star requirements for both water and energy, categorizing them within two or three tiers, depending on the appliance. Still, while this growing number of water-efficient dishwashers is certainly beneficial, it can be overwhelming for contractors and specifiers. A good place to start is with the Energy Star label. Standardsized offerings (eight or more place settings) can ❯❯

❯❯ use no more than 5.8 gallons of water per cycle to qualify for Energy Star, and compact models (less than eight place settings) use a maximum of 4.0 gallons per cycle. (Federal standards require 6.5 gallons or less per cycle.) To add to the confusion, hefty changes are in the works. In 2012, Energy Star is expected to raise energy and water usage requirements for dishwashers significantly— so much so that the percentage of qualifying dishwashers will likely drop from 80% of available units to 25%. Both of CEE’s dishwasher tiers exceed current Energy Star requirements, making it a safe bet for builders who don’t want to re-specify once the new Energy Star standards are put in place. Currently, Tier 1 dishwashers only use 5.0 gallons of water per cycle, and Tier 2 models use 4.25 or less gallons per cycle. It is important to note that while Energy Star and CEE specify both water and energy requirements, they qualify appliances on overall efficiency; therefore, it is better to trust the rating systems that are in place— both Energy Star and CEE—as opposed to trying to specify using water attributes alone. 50 | SUMMER 2011 | BUILDING PRODUCTS

SQUEEZING OUT EFFICIENCY The question is whether manufacturers can continue to reduce the amount of water dishwashers consume without compromising performance. Sensor technology has played a big role in helping increase efficiency by measuring the clarity of the water and then adapting water consumption, program duration, and wash temperatures accordingly. Improved filtration systems and alternating spray arms have also helped. Still, a lot of the success comes after installation. As part of the homeowner’s manual, builders and remodelers should inform clients of best practices such as running full dish loads and scraping—not rinsing—dishes. The many water-saving dishwashers on the market provide a simple way for building pros to save on overall water consumption, says Brendan Owens, vice president at the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). “When you look at the amount of effort it takes to specify one of these [dishwasher] systems, it’s just not that hard,” he notes. “The fact that it is easy and the fact that it is effective is kind of a win-win.”—Lisa Bonnema. ith homeowners increasingly demanding a fasten-free look to their composite and hardwood decks, new products help pros power through the sometimes slow process of concealed fastening systems. Be it with clips, biscuits, or screws, going “invisible” has become semi-automated. It’s all about looks, durability, and time, says Dave Lombardo, owner of American Deck in Baltimore. “These variables are driving fastener companies to say, ‘What’s the fastest way we can do it with the best appearance and at the lowest cost?’ It’s gotten to be real competitive.” Here are a few time-saving tools and systems to make your next deck job a breeze: ■ With pneumatic guns like Tiger Claw’s 11-inch model, pros can install clips twice as fast, says founder Don Martel. The gun nose holds the clip until it is inserted in the board’s groove. ■ Also speeding up installation time are Fiberon’s “gunnable” Phantom line, butt, and end clip fasteners. Once the builder sets the clips into the groove and aligns the Phantom HS Ballistic NailScrew driver, the clips install with screws as fast as by firing nails. ■ The gun-compatible Mantis deck clip from Sure Drive USA receives screws fired from the RCS Eliminator

Optimizing Windows HOW WINDOW SELECTION, DESIGN, AND PLACEMENT CAN MAKE A GREATER IMPACT ON EFFICIENCY.

W

indows have come a long way from the single-pane, aluminumframed units of 40 years ago. Today’s windows boast highperformance coatings, tints, gas fills, suspended films, spacers, and frame material options, with a variation of specs that enable pros to finely tune and optimize placement and performance depending on a wall’s orientation and exposure to the sun. Consider a bump-out breakfast room facing east, surrounded by tall windows to capture views and morning sun. Specifying triple-pane, low-E windows with a marginal SHGC rating (perhaps 0.40 or higher, depending on climate) for that particular circumstance, says Gary Gaiser, an architect with Pella’s Architectural Support Services division, boosts the windows’ ability to retain heat and create a warmer interior surface (thanks mostly to the third pane) while also benefiting from some solar heat gain to achieve a comfortable morning environment, perhaps without the need to jack up the thermostat. That spec also enhances comfort by mitigating the formation of a “convective current”— essentially, warm room air chasing air cooled by the window’s surface, creating an air stream that most people perceive as a draft from a leaky window. The warmer interior surface of the glass also alleviates radiant heat loss

from the occupants themselves—again, a dynamic of warmth trying to heat cooler surfaces or air. As a result of all that applied science, the heating system doesn’t have to work as hard (if at all) to warm up the breakfast room; it may also cut down on the home’s lighting demand. “With the number of glazing options available, you can pick and choose applications for different parts of the house,” says Gaiser. That kind of “spot specing” of windows, and the resulting impact on other systems and comfort, also may allow builders to balance the premium cost of a few triple-pane windows in a breakfast nook against the savings of right-sized (smaller) heating equipment and distribution schemes (fewer and shorter ducts) and perhaps fewer lighting fixtures, not to mention the energy those systems consume.

RULES OF THUMB Though windows are only one target among several products and practices toward a topnotch thermal envelope, there are still rules of thumb to follow to optimize their impact. ■ Southern Exposure: An all-day exposure, per the sun’s path. In heating (i.e., cold) climates, leverage it with a better U-factor (ideally 0.20 or less) but less-efficient SHGC (perhaps 0.50 or higher) to boost heat gain in the winter and offset heating energy; use overhangs or other shading devices to cut down gain in the summer, when the sun is higher in the sky. In cooling (i.e., hot) climates, spec windows with U-factors and SHGC ratings of 0.30 or better and use shading

1 tactics. “If I have to choose between blocking the summer sun and some solar gain in the winter, I’ll elect to block it,” says Texas custom builder Don Ferrier. ■ Western Exposure: Solar gain mostly in the late afternoon. Bob Saxler, architectural marketing manager at Andersen Windows, advises builders to focus on this elevation first, as it is the most difficult to control. If possible, orient the house and floor plan away from this exposure, such as situating utility areas, bathrooms, and, ideally, the garage on that side, and specify small and fewer operable (ideally casement) windows with efficient U-factors and SHGC ratings to mitigate solar gain and provide some measure of passive ventilation. If you have a view to the west, he says, boost the SHGC even more and look for multiple shading opportunities inside and out. ■ Northern Exposure: In this hemisphere, the least opportunity for solar gain. A dual-pane window with a standard low-E coating on the inner face of the outside pane (cold climate) or the outer face of the inside pane (hot climate) is sufficient. “We always recommend a low-E window for north-facing windows for its insulating value alone,” says Val Brushaber, director of product management, certification, and architectural development for Hurd Windows & Doors. The number and size of windows can be dictated by views, exterior aesthetics, and floor plan as much as thermal efficiency, though fewer windows is always better in that regard. North is also notorious for

prevailing winds, so think about air infiltration and passive ventilation through casement windows (instead of hung units) or fixed windows to lessen leakage. ■ Eastern Exposure: Rich in daylight, but far cooler than its opposite exposure. You can dial up the SHGC rating to 0.40 or more, especially in heating or mixed climates, while a U-factor of 0.30 is plenty to retard thermal transfer through the window.

1 Milgard. Essence windows combine a wood interior and a fiberglass exterior for a wood look with a durable exterior surface. The windows feature traditional butt joinery and no visible fasteners, nail holes, or staple marks; an integrated weep system keeps moisture from penetrating the interior. With the standard glass package, the windows are Energy Star rated and have R-values ranging from 3.33 to 3.57; optional triple glazing is available for up to 30% more efficiency. 800.645.4273. www.milgard.com. 3 Accu-Weld. The Haddon Signature series comprises three Energy Star-labeled window lines. Accu-Vision windows feature a 15-chamber, foam-filled, beveled vinyl frame and come with Solarban60 insulating glass for an R-value of 3.33 and a U-factor of 0.30. Accu-Safe offers the same features, but with tempered and laminated double-strength glass and an improved R-value (3.44) and U-factor (0.29). AN INTEGRATED APPROACH The breakfast room scenario, and even more dramatic examples of homes that use windows of varying U-factor and SHGC values, underscores the merits of a building science (or integrated) approach to efficiency and comfort. “In reality, everything is related [to thermal performance and comfort],” says Saxler. “You need a total home evaluation if you want to fine-tune your windows.” An energy audit by a local rater certified by the Residential Energy Services Network is a good place to start, while most window manufacturers or their dealers employ software programs to determine ideal specifications based on other, whole-house factors, such as wall insulation values. “It’s an opportunity to stay one step ahead of the competition, to offer a house that’s more comfortable and efficient than the next guy,” says Saxler. “If you do the building science, you’re in the top 10% of all builders.” —Rich Binsacca. he exterior of the Concord Green Healthy Home, a Massachusetts Energy Star-certified house from ZeroEnergy Design, offers a traditional look consistent with its historic surroundings, a style that continues inside, where a clean neutral palette and historic-leaning design blend with modern touches and pops of color to modernize the spaces for a fresh, updated take on the traditional vernacular. In the master bath, that styling comes through in the white canvas dotted with natural elements and sleek-yet-subtle product choices. “Simple elegance was the idea, a casual elegance where the home fits in with its historic setting but lives easily and is low maintenance,” says Lisa Kauffman Tharp, owner of Kauffman Tharp Design and the

interior designer for the project. White walls, tub, and sinks create a crisp backdrop for Kauffman Tharp’s creative earthier touches, such as a warm antique wood slab (originally designed for a kitchen) topping a reclaimed base. The geometric sinks and streamlined shower enclosure contrast perfectly against the more rustic Rohl faucet and sailboatinspired shades; polished nickel hardware offers a slightly warmer look than polished chrome. The clean design complements the healthy home, where optimal indoor air quality guided many product and design decisions; in the master bath, finishes and grouts are low- or no-VOC, and a Myson radiator negates the need for a forced-air system. —Katy Tomasulo
