SHANAG IS A QUIET HAMLET ABOUNDING IN APPLE ORCHARDS, ENSCONCED IN NATURES PEACE, TRANQUILITY AND SOLITUDE WITH THE SWEET SCENT OF APPLES HANGING IN THE AIR.
SHANAG Shanag village is located 5 kms from Old Manali. It can also be reached by beas bridge near Nehru kund. The village is located towards the northern part of kullu valley and is blessed with an amazing view of Rohtang Peak. Shanag also has an adjoining river that derives from the glacier on the mountain behind the river.

It is located 22 KM towards North from District head quarters Kullu. 133 KM from State capital Shimla Shanag Pin code is 175103 and postal head office is Bahang . Shanag is surrounded by Kullu Tehsil towards South , Spiti Tehsil towards East , Drang Tehsil towards South , Lahul Tehsil towards North . The village is a part of a cluster of 3 villages Bhang, Burwa and Shanag. The village of Shanag is situated along the river Shanag below the majestic peak Shanag Shila. The population is predominantly engaged in Agriculture and Plantation along with Tourism related activities. There is also a rural handloom industry existing in the village where few women in the village spend there time working on handloom machines. The road divides the village into two parts, upper shanag consists of only a few houses and the Organic House is located at the very end of the habitation. The location is peacefull and surrounded by the forest area at the back. At a distance of 500 m from the Organic House lies the Eco-Village Shanag Retreat Centre. This centre has a mountain and some forest at the west end, towards the north lies the river Shanag, on the east lies the Shanag Shila and towards the south is a mountain with conferrous forests. The centre has an adjoining road, Apple Orchards, Lawn, Parking, and a Chalet.
Highlights The landscape, with an altitude of 2000 m, is typical of the Middle Himalayas. Temperatures drop to sub-zero levels during winter, accompanied by heavy snowfall. The summers are very calm and comfortable with moderate sunlight and occasional rainfall due to cloud formation upon most evenings in the valley. The Monsoons are beautiful and are accompanies by the apple harvest season. The ecosystem can be described as a steeply sloping conifer forest with species like deodar, khanor, akhrot, bhojpatra or birch, rakhal, rai or spruce and tosh. The region is rich in fauna like the brown bear, Himalayan black bear, leopard, barking deer, musk deer, Himalayan monal, Koklass pheasant, kalij pheasant and the Western tragopan. The Manali Sanctuary lies within 10 km of the community-conserved area. The legal status of the land is demarcated protected forest.
Two main communities; rajputs and dagis (scheduled caste). The primary occupations are horticulture and tourism-related. Some villagers also derive income from jobs. The total livestock population is 680. The forest is mainly used for grazing by 200 cattle (for 6 months), 400 sheep/goats (for 6 months) and 150 migratory buffaloes (for 4 months). All the requirements of fuelwood, timber, biomass and 30 per cent of the requirement of leaf fodder for the 121 households is also met from the forest. The villagers have legal rights (codified during forest settlement) to biomass, fodder, fuelwood and timber in the forest.
