COLLABORATIVE COMMUNITY MUSIC LEARNING CENTER This design attempts to answer the need of the music communities proliferating in Yogyakarta, which is more space and the ability to collaborate among communities. The challenge is to design a new typology of space which could connect music performers, communities, and learners, and also creating new spaces for the music communities to express themselves by creating impromptu performance spaces.

ISSUES FACED BY MUSIC COMMUNITIES OF YOGYAKARTA

(source: private doc.)

Music communities proliferating around Yoygakarta, and lack decent space to practice, perform, or just to hang out and gather. A number of communities became inactive or died because of this very reason. If it continues, the development of music communities around Yogyakarta would perish.

APPROACH

(source: snazzy maps)

The approach is to design a collaborative center, focusing primarily on visual connection between music rooms. Placing performance spaces on the design will further ensure communities to thrive.

Contextual analysis of the location of major music communities in Yogyakarta

VISUAL APPROACH TO COLLABORATION

Visibility studies conducted on different alternatives of music rooms configurations and opening placements, to create the most optimal visual connection between each room, opening probabilities of collaboration

CONCEPTUAL MASSING

The open performance space is located on the 3rd floor, giving music students place to perform. Concert hall is used as a commercial performance venue. The restaurant gives visitors a chance to eat in the restaurant while listening to local music performance. The entrance gives space for a larger outdoor performance such as rock bands.

The structure of the building is emphasized to serve as a metaphor for the stuctural aspect of music, mimicking the lines on a musical sheet. The curvy lines of the roof and facade shows the fluidity of music, mimicking the legato lines of a musical piece.

PLENGKUNG GADING - KRAPYAK HERITAGE CORRIDOR The brief is to create a heritage corridor of the Krapyak to Plengkung Gading Corridor, which is a rather neglected part of the Yogyakarta imaginary axis despite of its rich culture. The concept is to bring back the historical and philosophical value of this part, which was the sultan’s hunting ground, philosophically interpreted as the human’s journey through life. The idea was to bring back the forest on this corridor, both literally and connotatively. My design was the “youth” section of the philosophical axis, thus giving birth to the concept “Forest of Creativity”

Academic Work | 3rd Year | 2016 Supervisor: Ir. Ikaputra, M.Eng., Ph.D. ikaputra@ugm.ac.id

ISSUE OF YOGYAKARTA’S PHILOSOPHICAL AXIS The philosophical axis of Yogyakarta stretches from the northern Tugu Pal Putih, along the Malioboro Street, Sultan’s palace, Plengkung Gading, to the southern Panggung Krapyak. The northern part, from Tugu to the Sultan’s palace is a vibrant cultural tourist destination, whereas the southern part is rather neglected. The rich philosophy and history of the whole axis could not be fully understood by the tourists, due to the condition of the southern part which lack attention and care.

a traditional market becomes the main local economic wheel

Philosophy of the Axis The axis is philosophically interpreted as the journey of human life from birth to death, whereas the Panggung Krapyak is the start point, a metaphor of embryo. The journey continues to childbirth, up to the Plengkung Gading and Keraton, which means marriage and adult life, and ends on the Tugu, interpreted as death.

MACRO CONCEPT APPROACH OF THE AXIS

The concept I used as the theme of the historical corridor is “Alas Budaya”, which has a dualism of meaning. Alas means both “forest” and “base” at the same time in Javanese language, and “budaya” means “culture, which arguably corresponds to the Philosophical Axis. Cultural Base A concept which emphasizes and strengthen the existing Philosophical axis. The philosophy is expanded from Birth-Marriage to birth-childhood-teenage life-marriage, which then would need a new landmark.

MICRO CONCEPT OF DESIGN SCOPE The area of design that was given to me is the area 450 meters south of the Plengkung Gading, an area which covers the Tirtodipuran Street Junction, 150m long. Thus, based on the expanded philosophy, this area is interpreted as the “teenager” philosophy. existing area potentials

my design scope LITERAL FOREST

source: Nafas Art Magazine

The existing area consists of mainly small bussiness buildings, a modern supermarket, Cemeti art gallery, an abandoned and vandalized Art Deco styled house, and other Indische styled residential houses, which could be the main attractor of the region.

CREATIVITY “FOREST”

Literal Forest. Bringing the past history of the Panggung Krapyak - Plengkung Gading corridor as a forest back with an urban reforestation by creating guidlines of the streetscape to be planted with greeneries. Creativity “Forest”. With a connotated meaning of a forest, it bears the meaning of a place with diversities. Creativity forest is interpreted as a place entirely serving the youth of Yogyakarta to express themselves creatively.

Indische/Colonial styled buildings which are privately owned may be built with a fence 1.5m high to ensure privacy. The enclosure must allow vines to grow on it, or by creating a green wall with living plants on the desired fence.

Private bussiness buildings must be built with a living enclosure (with vines or green wall) 1.5m high to ensure public comfort. A canopy is designed to create shadings for the pedestrians walking by the private bussiness building.

The “creative walk stretches from the Cemeti Art Gallery to the old art deco building. The pedestrian walkway is designed so that local artists may paint and express themselves on the street, rather on the buildings. It accommodates the local community especially the youth to hold street performances or street art

MOSQUE

OF

CIMENYAN

The project was a commission from the Baitul Muttaqin Islamic Foundation to design a public mosque for the region of Cimenyan, which is located on the hills of northern Bandung, Indonesia. I was given the task to be the project coordinator, thus designing from the concept to design development. The project is now awaiting confirmation from the foundation.

SITE PROFILE

ANALYSIS

Qibla The Qibla (muslim praying direction) is 90ยบ, or perpendicular to the site. This makes it more simple to design, as there is no need to tilt the building

Riverside The site is located behind a slope to a local river. The design near the river has to be free from construction obstructing the water infiltration

Main road A relatively busy main road is traversing on the front of the site, giving a challenge on reducing the noise pollution for the mosque

Community The site is located in the center of the local community, giving an easy access to the mosque

The site is located between a slope pointing to the river below, and a relativey busy main road

The ground which is intended to contain the mosque is lowered 3 meters to ensure the noise pollution does not interfere and disturb the “jamaah of the prayers.

Structural columns are placed in the position and dimensions which does not disturb the Jamaah. The column distance is 3,9m for a clean shaf (jamaah line) which needs a clean 1,2m width

East Elevation

The mosque is given 2 floors to assure the local community to be accommodated during the weekly friday prayers. With a floor area of 400sqm, this mosque can accommodate 550 jamaahs.

The roof of the mosque is tilted towards the river. This results in the rain water to fall to the slope on to the river below.

The Baitul Muttaqin Mosque of Cimenyan is using bricks from local craftsman, and is exposed to be the icon for Cimenyan.

Ablution

Due to the islamic belief that women and men can not touch each other before marriage, the circulation for women and men for ablution and toilets has to be separated

The sunken mosque gives blockage from noise pollution while still maintaining maximum natural lights and natural ventilation

The Mihrab, or the place for the prayer leader has a split on it walls. This is a spiritual reminder that in Islamic beliefs there is only one God, portrayed by the split which inserts light, giving the jamaah a focus. The ceiling design also brings focus to the frontt. The dimension of the columns ensures the shaf (jamaah line) not to be interrupted, as it will disturb and also spoil the whole prayer.

BENTENG BARUNG: SUPADIO ROUNDABOUT MONUMENT The competition brief is to design a monument on the roundabout located in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan (West Borneo), specifically in the Kubu Raya region, as a main landmark of West Kalimantan. The issue faced in this competition is that the area is at the conflux of major cities, and also the main artery from the airport. Thus, the landmark has to be a major point of interest of the region. We found out other issues faced by this area such as ecological, cultural, and economical issues. The concept of “Benteng Barung” (Sanscrete) is then chosen which means “a fortress which goes hand in hand with ecology, culture, and economy.

CONCEPTUAL APPROACH

The current paradigm of development in Kubu Raya is developing by removing and ruling out the culture, community, and ecology in the region. The new paradigm we propose is the concept of “Barung” which means “together / hand in hand”. Thus, cultural, communal, and ecological aspects and values are incorporated within the design.

MUSIC OF CITIES: MUSICAL EXPLORATION ON THE STREET NETWORK OF THE PHILOSOPHICAL AXIS OF YOGYAKARTA Street networks can be considered as an identity of a certain city, as no city has the same street network. Networks of streets, roads, canals, rivers’ morphology will eventually become an identification system just like a finger print. One of the easily recognizable street networks is the city of Yogyakarta, as the philosophical axis forms a structure where roads are aligned towards the points of the compass. Exploring these networks of streets as a graphic notation will create a certain music which is specific to this region, blurring the boundaries between music and urban design.

SPARK OF THOUGHT

All the street networks of the cities below are easily recognizable such as Amsterdam, London, Mecca, and Manhattan because of its unique and distinctive morphology. Inspired by the works of Iannis Xenakis, a mathematician and composer, the street networks of a certain city can be interpreted as a musical graphic notation, which can be translated into sounds, harmonies, and notes.

TRANSLATING STREET NETWORKS INTO MUSIC

The street network which is used on this exploration is the city of Yogyakarta, due to its philosophical axis which embedded the meaning of human life journey from birth to death. As the city of Yogyakarta is rather extensive, only a fragment of its network will be musicalized, which is the philosophical axis spanning from the southern Panggung Krapyak to the northern Tugu Pal Putih. For this experiment, the segment is rotated 90ยบ clockwise to emphasize the philosophy of human life journey. The instrument used is the violin, due to its flexibility of sounds which can be created with a single traditional instrument.

curved lines are interpreted as glissando, a technique where the note is dragged up or down to create an ascending or descending pitch

Tugu Pal Putih straight horizontal lines are interpreted as normal notes, the length of the line corresponds to the length of the note. The higher the line, the higher the pitch, and vice versa.

Panggung Krapyak (source: snazzy maps)

Straight vertical lines are read as sforzando double stop notes, a technique playing multiple notes simultaneously in a stringed instrument with sudden power. It is read so because of the firm vertical line
