INFORMATION ABOUT INFECTIOUS DISEASES A large number or infectious diseases could be discussed here. In this brochurewe will focus on the ‘popular’ diseases. More information you will find at www.tropicare.eu
Hepatitis A
Buiktyfus What is it? A bacterial intestine infection. How do you get it? Contaminated food and drinks. One dirty drinking glass is enough. How can you get rid of it? This disease can be treated with antibiotics. How to prevent it? Personal and food hygiene. Immunisation.
What is it? A viral infection of the liver (hepa). How do you get it? It is transferred through contaminated food and drinks. How can you get rid of it? This Pfeiffer-like disease will wear off after time. There is no cure against this disease. How to prevent it? Personal and food hygiene. Immunisation.
Hepatitis B
Yellow Fever
What is it? A viral liver infection that strongly increases among travellers. How do you get it? It is transferred through contaminated blood and unsafe sex. How can you get rid of it? No proper treatment is available.Usually the body’s immune system cures it, but it can have chronic and even fatal consequences. How to prevent it? By avoiding blood contact and unsafe sex. Vaccinations are available.
Malaria
What is it? A very dangerous, oftentimes lethal viral infection. How do you get it? The virus is transmitted by contaminated mosquitoes (aedes). How can you get rid of it? There is no treatment for yellow fever. How to prevent it? Prevent mosquito bites and get a yellow fever immunisation (which is mandatory in some countries).
Dengue What is it? A parasite infectious disease that can be fatal if non-/bad treated. How do you get it? Is transmitted by a with malaria parasites contaminated mosquito (anopheles). This mosquito is active between dusk and dawn. How can you get rid of it? Effective anti-malaria drugs. How to prevent it? Prevent insect bites. Take malaria tablets when prescribed.
What is it? A viral infection that results in severe head and joint aches. It’s mostly not dangerous but sometimes is. How do you get it? The virus is transmitted by contaminated mosquitoes (Aedes). How can you get rid of it? There is no treatment for Dengue. It usually is cured by the body’s immune system. How to prevent it? Prevent being bitten (there is no vaccine available).

INSECT BITE PREVENTION Biting and stinging insects are not only irritating; they can also transfer a number of sometimes serious infectious d iseases, including: • malaria (almost all (sub) tropical destinations) • yellow fever (large parts of Tropical Africa, South America) • dengue, also referred to as dandy fever (Latin America, Southeast Asia) People generally use malaria tablets to prevent malaria. These give good, but NOT full protection. Every year, more than two million people die from malaria. There is currently no vaccine or medicine for dengue. You therefore need to prevent mosquito bites as much as possible.
INSECT REPELLENTS
TROPICARE TIP: The malaria mosquito is only active in the evening and at night; the dengue mosquito primarily during the day. So protect yourself continuously!
Insect repellents are products that can be applied to the exposed skin. A repellent will make your skin unattractive for biting insects. The smell of the active ingredient (i.e. DEET or a natural active ingredient) is highly unpleasant for the insect however hardly noticeable and not harmful for humans. This smell will distort the sensors of the insect, resulting in the insect detouring to another victim. For the best result the repellent has to be applied sparingly and evenly on the exposed skin. The efficacy of the repellent is determined by the active ingredient. The longevity is determined by the percentage used active ingredient. The lower the concentration, the more often you will have to re-apply. Care Plus ® Deet Anti-Insect Tropicare has developed the strongest insect repellent on the market: Care Plus ® Deet. This product has been registered by the government and meets all requirements for safety and effectiveness. DEET is an effective repellent against stinging insects (mosquitoes, midges, horseflies) as well as ticks. It is suitable for both tropical destinations (risk of malaria, dengue, yellow fever) and for European regions. In 1997 and in 2001, Care Plus ® Deet was tested the best by the Dutch Consumer Association. Care Plus ® Deet Lotion was tested ‘GOOD’ in 2004 by the German consumer association. The percentage of DEET determines how long the repellent remains effective. Consumers can choose which form of application they prefer.
80166 Infoguide GB 2008.indd 7
ALSO EFFECTIVE AGAINST TICKS!
7
29-04-2008 16:11:50
Care Plus ® recommends a DEET percentage of between 30% and 50%. An insect repellent with a DEET percentage of less than 30% is not sufficiently effective and a percentage in excess of 50% has no added value.
GOLDEN RULES
Care Plus ® Deet Anti-Insect is available in the following c oncentrations: DEET Appli. Cont. Effective for 50% Lotion 50ml 10 hours 40% Spray 60ml 8 hours 40% Spray 100ml 8 hours 30% Gel 60g 5,5 hours
These are Tropicare’s three golden rules for preventing mosquito bites: 1 wear light-coloured, finely-woven clothing (long-sleeved shirt, long trousers, socks, closed shoes 2 apply a strong insect repellent containing 30-50% DEET to exposed skin 3 sleep under a good quality mosquito net, preferably impregnated
TROPICARE TIP: Care Plus® Natural cools the skin.
Natural PRODUCTs Besides DEET there are a few natural alternatives that are effective. These products are highly suitable for young children, pregnant women and people with sensitive skin. Care Plus ® Natural In 2005 Tropicare introduces a wasp deo and a tick deo. Both products have been developed by a Swiss pharmaceutical laboratory and have been scientifically tested fore effectiveness (at least 8 hours). One out of every ten people is allergic to wasp stings. An allergic reaction can be very d angerous. Ticks represent a greater threat every year. A tick can transmit various infections, among which Lyme’s disease. The use of the wasp deo and tick deo disorientates these tormentors. De Care Plus ® Natural Wasp Deo and Natural Tick Deo are both available as a pump spray in the following sizes Application Cont. Effective for Wasp Deo 60ml 8 hours Tick Deo 60ml 8 hours
Mosquito Nets A mosquito net will keep insects and other vermin at bay and will provide hours of undisturbed sleep. A mosquito net will only provide additional protection against (malaria) mosquitoes when the net is fully closed, it is made of durable polyester and the mesh size is no larger than 1.75 mm. In a humid (sub) tropical climate a mesh size that is too small will make the net feel oppressive, which is why it is not suited for this purpose. Care Plus ® Mosquito Nets have been designed in our own workshops and have been manufactured in compliance with the most stringent quality standards. The top-notch multifibre polyester is eminently suited for durable impregnation and will guarantee a long lifecycle for the net. 8

MOSqUITO NETS Impregnation For optimum protection it is essential to impregnate the mosquito with the proper concentration of contact insecticide. The contact insecticide used on the Care Plus® Mosquito Nets is deadly for mosquitoes and other vermin, but harmless to people. Impregnation provides extra protection as mosquitoes do not even get the chance to land on and bite through the net. The WHO recommends Long Lasting impregnated mosquito nets for high-risk malaria areas (tropical Africa, Amazon region, parts of South East Asia). Mosquito nets are available in three varieties: untreated, standard impregnation, and Long Lasting Impregnation (LLI). Untreated mosquito nets are ideal for at home. When travelling to areas where malaria is a risk factor, impregnated mosquito nets are recommended. Standard impregnated mosquito nets remain effective for 6 months when used. The nets are washable but no longer effective once washed. After being washed just once they must be impregnated again. The useful lifespan of the impregnation improves if impregnated mosquito nets are stored in a dark space after use. Besides these standard impregnated mosquito nets there are also Long Lasting Impregnated (LLI) mosquito nets. Tropicare was the first to introduce them in 2003. By using this new technology the impregnation remains effective 5 times longer than standard impregnated mosquito nets. Furthermore, the nets can be washed without losing their effectiveness. All LLI mosquito nets manufactured by Tropicare meet the requirements of the WHO (World Health Organization). The Tropenzorg organisation uses the patented DawaPlus ® technology. This impregnation will provide a long-lasting effect of 4 to 5 years, even when used daily. These mosquito nets can be washed up to twenty times.
80166 Infoguide GB 2008.indd 9
TROPICARE TIP: Care Plus® Mosquito Nets meet all the requirements a mosquito net should meet: • a fine-meshed structure that does not let through mosquitos but is breathing sufficiently • a good quality polyester (cotton and nylon are less suitable) • close fitting all round and offers sufficient room so that the sleeper does not have to touch the net • impregnated according to WHO-standards

Sun protection
CALCULATION MODEL When staying in the sun longer than your skin can bear without protection, sunscreen measures must be taken. A sunscreen product with an SPF of 25 protects the skin 25 times longer against UV-B and UV-A radiation than without it, so in the above example: 25 x 15 minutes = approx. 6.25 hours. A sunscreen product with an SPF of 10 protectsthe skin 10 times longer against UV-B and UV A radiation than without it.
Sunlight is good for our wellbeing and for the vitality. It stimulates the circulation and is essential to the synthesis of vitamin D, which the body needs for calcium production for the bones. However, sunlight can also pose a danger for your skin: • UV-A radiation can cause allergic reactions and promotes premature ageing of the skin. • UV-B radiation can cause dangerous cell damage (sunburn). And sunburn is something the skin never forgets! www.careplus.eu for more information. Besides wearing headgear and protective clothing it is recommended to apply some sort of sunscreen on exposed skin. It is important that the substance blocks UV-A as well as UV-B radiation. This should be stated on the packaging. In the tropics and subtropics radiation is more intense than in the Netherlands. So it is wise to always use sunscreen with a high protection factor, referred to as SPF (Sun Protection Factor). Incidentally, this does not mean that you will not tan! Your skin is only protected against the harmful effects of UV radiation. It also prevents ageing of the skin. SPF and UPF SPF is a standard for products that protect your skin, e.g. sun lotion, which indicates how much longer you can stay in the sun using it. In case your skin normally allows you to stay in the sun for 10 minutes without getting sunburned, then a product with SPF 30 extends this period by factor 30: up to 5 hours. Besides this SPF, which is visible on every sun tan product, there is also the UV Protection Factor (UPF). This index was developed especially for clothing. Clothing does stop direct light but does not stop UV rays resulting in possible sunburn, even when your skin is fully covered. The UPF standard is similar to SPF: the factor indicates how much longer than normal you can stay in the sun without getting burned. Length of time in the sun The maximum time in the sun can be calculated: • Sun strength / UV index • People with skin type II (prevalent) have a sun strength of 100 • If the UV Index is 7, they can safely stay in the sun for 100/7 = approx. 15 minutes without taking extra measures

HOW TO AVOID SKIN DAMAGE FROM UV RADIATION • Try to stay out of the sun between 11.00 and 15.00 hours, as the solar radiation is most intense at this time • Children should preferably stay out of direct sun. If this cannot be avoided, they should wear protective clothing and cover their exposed skin with a reliable sunscreen product with a high protection factor (>SPF 20) • Sun screening pro ducts should always be applied 30 minutes before going out into the sun so that the protection factor can do its protective work

Clothing as an UV protection
TROPICARE TIP: Reapplying a sun protection product does not extend the sunbathing time.
The advice to wear covering clothing is logical. The aspect of protection against the sun is quite another story. A pair of denim jeans has a UV Protection Factor of more than 1000, but in the tropics or during outdoor activities they are very uncomfortable and too hot. A standard quality cotton T-shirt only has a UPF of 10, while a wet T-shirt has an even lower UPF of 5. This means you can still get sunburned with clothing on! The thinner and more open the fabric, the lower the protection factor against the sun.
For this reason, you should wear clothing in hot climates that breathes, is comfortable, lightweight, strong, durable, regulates humidity and protects you against the sun. Tropicare has developed special UV-protective clothing that is comfortable, breathable, water and filth repellent, moisture controlling, mosquito proof and sun protective. Caretex is a microfibre fabric with special fibre treatments that guarantee these properties. Caretex has been tested under the most extreme circumstances. Independent research has shown that Care Plus ® Gear Caretex clothing complies with the European UV protection standard for clothing NEN-EN 13758 This means that the clothing has a guaranteed minimum UPF of 40+. Care Plus ® Gear Caretex clothing goes even further, and has a UPF of 50+. Functional designs The Care Plus® clothing range is extremely convenient: the trousers have lots of pockets, back pockets and side pockets. And very practical too: they have legs that can be unzipped. This is handy if you want to make a pair of shorts from your long trousers. The shirts have roomy top pockets, sleeves that you can roll up and keep rolled up with a handy fixture and a secret pocket to keep things like your credit card or passport in. NEW Care Plus ® Medikeeper Pocket Keeping your medical file with you at all times, everywhere. The Care Plus ® Medikeeper is a medical aid and travel dossier on a USB stick. It can store all the data that will be important in case of an accident of any kind, anywhere. The data stored could be such things as blood-group, current medications and contra-indications, as well as information about family members to be contacted in emergencies. Thanks to this handy device you never arrive in a hospital completely without your medical data available! On the Care Plus ® Gear Caretex shirts and zip off pants a special SOS Medikeeper pocket has been added, in which the USB stick can be kept.

Sizes and colours The entire Care Plus ® Gear Caretex collection is available in different colours: Khaki, Midnight Grey, Brown and Army Green. For ladies, the trousers and shirts are available in sizes 36 to 46. Men’s trousers are in sizes 44 to 58 and men’s shirts go from S to XXL. The Plus ® Gear Caretex Cap is available in sizes M to XL. Care Plus ® Gear Caretex is sold at a selected number of outdoor sports shops. Cooperation with Dutch Cancer Society To stimulate research into skin cancer, Tropicare donates 5% of the turnover from each Care Plus ® Gear Caretex product sold (in Holland) to the Dutch Cancer Society. Both organisations are working together to reduce the risk of skin cancer.
New to our clothing collection are the zippable trousers and T-shirts with long sleeves for children. The trousers are available in khaki and brown. Because all versions are made of Caretex (Poly-cotton microfibre), the clothing is UV-resistant (UPF 50+), insectproof thanks to its fine weave, humidity-regulating and dirt-resistant. The fabric composition of the trousers is 80% nylon and 20% cotton. Available in sizes 92 to 176, the T-shirts have been designed to protect children as much as possible against the harmful effects of UV radiation from the sun. For this reason, the shirts have long sleeves and a high UV-protection factor of at least UPF 40+. These T-shirts are made of high-quality polyester (65%) and rayon (35%). They are quick to dry, thanks to the “Wicking Finish” treatment. They come in sizes 92 to 176, and are available in Basil Green, Wine Red, Ash Blue and Desert Khaki colours.

TROPICARE TIP: • Will you be spending a longer time in direct or indirect sunlight? Then cover up and wear a hat or cap. Clothes have to be comfortable, breathe, eliminate transpiration and of course protect you from harmful UV rays (e.g., Care Plus® Gear). Be sure to use suntan lotion with a high protective factor (UPF) on exposed skin.
TROPICARE TIP: Care Plus® Gear not only offers UV protection but also protection against mosquitoes.

How bamboo works Bamboo breaths remarkably well. When it's very hot, bamboo naturally remains cool by taking in moisture and by ventilation. When it's cold, the micro-structure functions as a base layer that keeps you warm. In addition, bamboo has a natural, anti-bacterial property and the Bugsox keep your feet fresh and odour-free. This is more hygienic and healthier. How Coolmax works COOLMAX ® is a high-tech fibre which has been specially developed for dry and comfortable wear. This fibre transports the moisture away from the skin to the outside layer of the sock where it can evaporate quickly. Healthguard™ Vital Protection: A revolutionary insect-resistant product with prolonged effect that prevents annoying, itching insect bites and even prevents serious illnesses. Vital Protection doesn't irritate and its biologically degradable Healthguard™ impregnation remains active for up to about 20 washes.
TROPICARE TIP: - Make sure your feet remain dry as this reduces the risk of blisters. - Always take a pair of extra socks when you go trekking.

FIRST AID KITS
R. Hulsebosch is an expedition doctor and has described his experience in the Care Plus® First Aid Guide. This book is included in all kits, except in the “Basic” kit
Minor accidents easily happen. While travelling, when you are practising outdoor sports or even at home in the kitchen. It is therefore essential to always have a first aid kit handy. In a warm and humid climate in the (sub) tropics, in particular, small wounds can quickly become infected. Proper care of wounds is always essential. A high temperature is a sure sign that you may be infected with an infectious disease (e.g. malaria). We therefore advise always carrying a thermometer when travelling. Another aspect is that healthcare facilities in the country of destination are often not up to the standard of those at home. Scarcity of – often not sterile – needles, syringes and other medical equipment that penetrate the skin increases the risk of infectious diseases such as AIDS and hepatitis B. It is therefore sensible to take an extensive set of equipment with you in addition to a first aid kit. All our First Aid kits have been put together by an experienced expedition doctor and GP: R. Hulsebosch. We have enclosed the quadrilingual 160-page book “Care Plus ® First Aid Guide”, which he wrote, in all the kits, except in the Care Plus ® Basic kit. It includes a wealth of his experience and knowledge regarding frequently occurring accidents. On the back of the cardboard package you will find a quadrilingual table of contents. The size of the bags containing our kits is ample so that you can add your own contents, such as medication.

FIRST AID ACCESSORIES Besides first-aid kits, Care Plus ® also has a wide range of accessories that can come in handy when travelling but also at home. Care Plus ® Emergency Blanket This is an emergency blanket that protects against cold and heat. Can be used for example, in the event of industrial, traffic and skiing accidents, accidents in the mountains, fire and bad weather.
Care Plus ® Emergency Shears These are first aid shears that can be used for emergency situations in isolated areas. The shears cut through clothing, thick plastic and even thin metal, to enable treatment of wounds without having to remove the victim’s clothes.
TROPICARE TIP: Use the Care Plus ® First Aid System Emergency Blanket in case of hypothermia in order to bring the body back to a normal temperature. The blanket can also be used to protect the body from external heat. A real life saver.
Care Plus ® Flite-Mate Over 30% of all airplane passengers complain about pain in their ears during take-off, landing or during the entire flight. These earplugs equalize the pressure on both sides, reduce the pain and prevent the ears from ‘popping’ since they only allow a small amount of air to access the eardrums. This process is simple and comfortable; added to that, the sounds filtering ensures a very quiet flight. On arrival, you will be more relaxed and the jetlag will be less intensive. Blister prevention and treatment Every walker/hiker has to deal with blisters. There is no perfect remedy to this. Each person has different feet and blisters can have a wide range of causes. Prevention of b listers starts long before the hike. Blister prevention before the hike Hike regularly! This way, your feet can get used to your shoes. Ensure that your shoes fit well. The shoes should offer enough support and prevent that the feet start moving in the shoes this is an important cause of blisters – but at the same time the toes should have enough free space. Choose shoes made of the right material. Leather shoes breathe better than synthetics.Another disadvantage of synthetics is that it adapts less well to your feet. Buy thick, seamless socks, p referably with a thin inner-sock. Sometimes good insoles can relieve blister-sensitive areas. Embrocate your feet with with campherspray or foot powder on a daily basis, starting 4 weeks before the hike. This toughens the foot’s skin and makes it less sensitive to blisters. Wash your feet with cold water only and without soap. Otherwise the horny skin will become softer. Callus is good, but too much can also cause blisters.
80166 Infoguide GB 2008.indd 25
TROPICARE TIP: Pull on two pairs of panty stockings and then your usual walking socks. The first pair of stockings will adhere to your foot while the second pair will be able to move around freely between the first pair of stockings and the socks.

TROPICARE TIP: While resting, take off your shoes and socks and spray Care Plus® Camphor Spray on your feet. This immediately gives a feeling of coolness and refreshment. During a break: take off the shoes and socks. This way excess moist can evaporate. Possibly you can change your sock at this point, or wear them inside-out. Even better: bring an extra pair.
PREVENTION DURING THE HIKE Sensitive areas can be preventively taped right before the hike. Ensure that no ridges form in the tape. Does the tape stick to your feet? Rub some talcum powder on the tape. Instead of taping, feet can also be treated with Care Plus® Foot powder. Care Plus ® Camphor Spray Strengthens the skin and prevents blistering. Spraying the feet on a daily basis with Care Plus ® Camphor Spray should start well before (2 to 3 weeks) a long hike or a hike of several days. Care Plus ® Camphor Spray can also be used during and after a long hike. It cools, freshens and relieves tired muscles and feet. Contains 60 ml.
Care Plus ® Foot Powder Dries the feet and helps prevent blisters. Reduces and prevents the burning feeling. Cools the skin (menthol) and absorbs moisture. Sprinkle over the feet before every hike. 40 gram per container.
Care Plus ® Click-Away Een revolutionaire nieuwe behandelingsThis is a revolutionary new treatment for itching and insect bites. Just a couple of clicks and the itching is gone. It reduces itching and swelling without the use of sticky creams or chemicals. The product is clinically tested, safe for children (over 4 years) and lasts for more than 4,000 treatments. Care Plus ® Click-Away requires no batteries and has no expiry date.
Care Plus ® Bite-Patch A mosquito bite can be very itchy and hard not to scratch. Scratching can lead to infections, which should be avoided, especially in the tropics. Tropicare introduces the Care Plus ® Bite-Patch, a round plaster with a patented, transdermal adhesive that introduces the active substances directly into the skin. These active substances reduce the itch and relieve the bite. Obviously, the patch also prevents you from scratching the bite! The convenient, resealable package contains 14 patches. 26

DID YOU KNOW THAT: One in four ticks is a carrier of Lyme’s Disease. That this illness can cause serious symptoms of illness in the muscles, the joints, the heart and the nervous system? That one in ten tick bites will lead to a contamination with this disease.
FIRST AID ACCESSORIES TICKS
Ticks can be infected with the Lyme bacteria. This disease can lead to serious symptoms in the muscles, joints, nervous system and heart when left untreated. Roughly 10% of tick bites lead to infection with Lyme’s disease. It is essential to remove the tick carefully within 24 hours. The chance of infection is then minimal. You should take care to avoid irritating and damaging the tick as far as possible when removing it. Care Plus ® Tick-Out Tick Remover Ticks are removed easily and safely with the Care Plus ® Tick-Out Tick Remover. The special gripping head ensures that the tick is held securely, with the minimum risk of damaging the tick. There is also a notch in the gripping surface for removing nymphs, one of the life phases of the young tick. The tweezers are supplied with clear instructions and two alcohol swabs for disinfecting the site of the bite AFTER removal.

TROPICARE TIP: The following tips will help you protect yourself as much as possible against tick bites: - Wear a hat - Wear protective clothing, preferably with long sleeves - Use an insect repellent which contains DEET on exposed skin.
DID YOU KNOW THAT: Bees only sting when threatened or when their hive is endangered? The harpoon-shaped stinger remains lodged in the victim’s skin after a bee has stung. The bee will die after the sting. Wasps are more aggressive. They will usually sting in autumn, when food runs out. The wasp’s stinger is needleshaped and will not remain in the skin, so that a wasp can sting several times.
Care Plus ® Trixx Remove ticks directly and safely with the unique lasso technique. It’s very simple to use: press down the button at the top and lay the lasso over the tick flat on the skin, press the cap into the skin slightly and then release the button. Turn the pen slowly round one full turn – the tick will be removed and the site of its bite disinfected.
Care Plus ® Venimex In the summertime stinging and biting insects, which can be quite a problem, are unavoidable. Normally an insect bite is no real problem: it causes an itchy spot that usually goes away quickly. Use the Care Plus ® Venimex venom aspirator for insect stings and bites (including wasps, bees, hornets, horseflies, mosquitoes) and for scorpion and stingfish bites. The venom remover can also be used for spider and snake bites. The Care Plus ® Venimex venom aspirator is a vacuum pump that can remove surface venom from the bite location safely and painlessly. What is unique about this pump is that it can be used with one hand, even in difficult to reach spots. The Care Plus ® Venimex venom aspirator has suction strength of 803 mbar (when using the small suction cup). The Care Plus ® Venimex venom aspirator consists of: • venom aspirator • 2 suction cups • detailed instructions Care Plus® Venimex is available in your specialist oudoor sport shop, see www.careplus.eu

PERSONAL HYGIENE By personal hygiene we mean all the hygienic measures you can take for yourself, such as washing your hands and brushing your teeth, but also caring for wounds and precautionary measures in the event of sexual contact! HYGIENE WHEN TRAVELLING Most travellers run into problems by failing to observe hygiene rules. Hygiene when travelling comprises three aspects: 1. personal hygiene 2. food hygiene 3. water hygiene Lack of attention to or not using the proper resources with regard to hygiene can result in: • gastrointestinal infections • dehydration • sexually transmittable diseases
TROPICARE TIP: On average, one out of every three travellers are plagued by gastrointestinal infections. Diarrhoea is the most common example here. For more information about hygiene go to our website: www.tropicare.eu

PERSONAL HYGIENE
TROPICARE TIP: On many (tropical) destinations the food and water hygiene is not of the same standard as you are used to at home. Because of this care should be taken when consuming foods and drinks in these destinations. If the local water is of doubtful quality it is wise to only drink imported drinks such as cola. Do not accept ice cubes. Only eat at restaurants or vendors where more people are eating (a high conversion resulting in fresher food) and see to it that the food is prepared fresh and is heated well.
Care Plus ® Clean Disinfect Gel Dirty hands are a major source of infection, particularly gastroin- testinal infections (traveller’s diarrhoea). People are always picking things up, touching things and then eating a sandwich. This is risky. Clean hands are therefore extremely important on holiday. Washing you hands regularly with soap and water is not always possible on holiday. Either there is no soap and water, the water is not reliable or there is no clean towel available. For all those moments when there is no soap and water available, Care Plus ® Clean Disinfect Gel is the solution. It is a softening and cleansing antibacterial gel that protects your hands against harmful outsideinfluences. Care Plus ® Clean Disinfect Gel eliminates 99,9% of all harmful germs on your hands and contains Aloe Vera. Contents: 80 ml or 18 ml. Care Plus ® Clean Bio Soap A concentrated bio-degradable soap which is made from organic ingredients. This antibacterial soap is very multi-functional. It is suitable for washing hands, skin, hair, lightly soiled cloths or dishes. It also will lathe in fresh, salt or even brackish water. Ideal for the traveller and those heading into the mountains for days at a time. Contents: 100 m l.
FOOD HYGIENE By food hygiene we mean all the hygienic measures you can take with regard to food, such as critical selection and inspection of food and taking the right nutritional supplements to compensate for any deficiencies. Care Plus ® O.R.S. - Electrolyte Dehydration can be caused by (traveller’s) diarrhoea and physical exertion, such as hiking, cycling, mountain climbing and other sports. Small children and older people, in particular, are susceptible to dehydration. The lack of moisture and resulting salt imbalance in the body can be restored with an Care Plus ® O.R.S. (Oral Rehydration Salts) solution. This product contains a glucose/salt preparation with an excellent lemon and lime flavour. Each pack contains 12 sachets of water-soluble O.R.S. (6 duo sachets). It belongs in every travellers’ backpack. 30

WATER HYGIeNE There is no problem with drinking tap water in Western Europe and North America. In all other areas, however, you should take measures to make the water safe to drink. Water can be contaminated with: • micro organisms such as protozoa (parasitic single-celled organisms), bacteria and viruses • chemical pollution from, for example, agricultural chemicals and heavy metals The micro organisms can cause infectious gastrointestinal diseases in particular. Diarrhoea is the most common problem. Disinfection Tap water and mains water can be disinfected with the proper chlorine solution. Chlorine is a safe and effective product for this purpose and can be used over longer periods of time. It takes chlorine roughly 30 minutes to take effect, after which the water is purified and most of the taste and smell of the chorine solution has disappeared.
TROPICARE TIP: On average, one out of every three travellers are plagued by gastrointestinal infections. Diarrhoea is the most common example here. For more information about hygiene go to our website: www.tropicare.eu
Care Plus ® Hadex ® - Water Disinfectant This is a chlorine-based drinking water disinfectant. The use of Care Plus ® Hadex ® is recommended in locations where there is any doubt about the bacteriological reliability of the drinking water ( Care Plus ® Hadex ® deactivates the bacteria). If used correctly, 1 bottle of Care Plus ® Hadex ® (30 ml.) purifies 150 litres of safe and tasty drinking water. This is the only registered drinking water disinfection product.
Care Plus® Neutraliser - Water Neutraliser Care Plus ® Neutraliser eliminates the smell and taste of drinking water following the use of a chlorine-based agent to disinfect drinking water. This product can be used in combination with Care Plus ® Hadex ® or any other chlorine-based product. One drop of Care Plus ® Neutraliser per 200 ml of water completely eliminates the smell and taste.

Prior to departure If you have booked a destination outside Western Europe, please check if the following applies in your case: 1. Check whether vaccinations are required (see page 4). 2. Enquire as to whether your destination is affected by associated health risks, e.g. malaria. 3. Assure you have all your travel health care products. 4. Study your destination’s culture, climate, regulations and customs. 5. Check whether your passport is still valid at least to the date of return. 6. Check whether your destination requires a visa. 7. Do not forget your immunisation passport, blood type, and your own prescribed drugs.
