This Trip: I have no particular reason I booked a flight to Sardinia, “seems like a good idea” and “sure” was my internal dialogue. A week before my flight, I met some people who told me about a 5-day trek through the a rugged, seaside landscape called Selvaggio Blu (Wild Blue) where you have to pack all your own water and food. I planned on doing this hike until a heat wave of 110ºF weather came, making the desert hike quite dangerous. I decided it would just be better to stay at hostels and do day trips and explore the cool beaches. Melo. After learning that hostels didn’t really exist, AirBnbs were booked in advance and hotels were way too expensive for my broke-ass, I discovered that renting a kayak and sleeping on beaches, although slightly illegal, was the cheapest and best alternative possible. I paddled from Golfo di Marinella to Santa Maria Navarrese and – back – a trip along the Eastern coast of Sardinia, passing the Selvaggio Blu region. The tour took me 10 days and paddling about 250 miles of salty, Mediterranean Sea. The mosquitoes ate me alive each night. The rats were more curious than fearful. Canned tuna became a breakfast food. Cuts never healed. The Mistral Wind made paddling extremely difficult, dangerous and almost worthless. Through this all, I discovered the coolest sea caves I have ever seen, saw some of the most gorgeous seaside cliffs, found peace in myself, discovered love for the Sardo people, and re-discovered extreme admiration and respect for the natural world.
