Building SCHOOL
ChiArts, an established public highschool for visual and performing arts in Chicago, is facing space constraints due to the increasing needs of the students and staff. To accomodate this growth, the school is planning to relocate to a spacious heavy timber loft building at 224 N Des Plaines. The new facility will require adaptation to effectively house the school’s five main disciplines: Writing, Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts.

COMMUNITY DESIGN CENTER
A dynamic and engaging community design center where visitors are encourage to actively participate in the exhibits. The community design center provides an after class extracurricular activities that focuses on multi-media, drafting, design and art. The interactive museum at the design center seeks to create a more immersive and participatory learning environment , encouraging a deeper knowledge and connection with the site’s history through its many interactive features.
Rectangular form comes from the overall boundary of the site Copied the same form then rotate

L shape was then subtracted by the circular geometry to create the circulation going up

Emporium, a market hall that is a multifunctional building that integrates various community-focused amenities within its structure. The hall features a library, providing a space for learning and literacy, and a greenhouse, promoting urban agriculture and environmental education. Additionally, the hall includes a playground designed as a water garden, which serves the dual purpose of recreational space and a flood mitigation system by collecting and managing rainwater. This innovative design not only enhances the quality of urban life but also addresses environmental challenges, creating a sustainable and resilient community hub.
SITE ANALYSIS
Month: July – the highest temperature
Wind from the South and West brings in hot air. Blocking this area will lessen the use of cooling system.
During the summer night, South and West wind produces cooler air. The North and East provides the coolest air. Operable windows at the SW and NE will cool the building during night flushing.
WIND ROSE
During the Fall 2021 semester, the works of Heinz Isler were a focus of research. The exploration of pure compression and tension influenced the proposed structure. Isler's use of a physical approach to optimal form finding resulted in shell structures with impressive performance.
The stress gradient of the parabolic shape illustrates its functionality. Gravity acts perpendicular to the ground, causing the force acting on the member to result in bending.
Calculating the elements and checking if the structure can withstand specific loads and calculating the effectiveness of the structure to the members assigned.

DESIGN
The combination of different programs adds diversity to the architecture. Café spaces are placed next to market stalls, and the hydroponics system is designed to engage consumers.
- The development of the Dan Ryan Expressway has negatively impacted the area. Adding a park attached to the building creates a welcoming space for everyone in the neighborhood.
The main entrance of the building is located next to the mini park, which is adjacent to the CTA Blue Line.
The construction of the Dan Ryan Expressway not only affected the parks but also turned the area into a flood zone. The accumulation of water from the highway overflows onto the site. Creating water gardens for water collection helps the community reduce the risk of flooding. Additionally, the plants act as a buffer to the noise from the expressway.
Vaulted roof for effective water drainage and promots optimal airflow.
The greenhouse utilizes ETFE material to enhance heat transfer and exchange.

This structure is intended to encourage people to slow down and appreciate their surroundings. The ability to unwind and appreciate nature in a hectic metropolis. The tree's rings served as inspiration for the design. By manipulating with the elevation and depression of the ring, many scales of shapes are created. The contours provides an area for social interaction and conversation.

Building GARDEN
An outdoor garden environment that has been carefully developed to accommodate the physical, psychological, social, and spiritual essentials for the visitors. The gardens are designed to attract and support plant life and friendly animals. Raised planters for horticultural therapeutic activities are only one example of an active use that may be included into the landscape design, while passive applications like secluded seating places near to a pond are also possible.
