hen we had rhythm, it was mega” - That’s Rallying!
It was destined to be a nerve-wracking journey when Pistonheads journalists, Chris Harris and Dan Prosser, embarked on the Wyedean rally - their second event together and the first time either had competed on gravel. Chris and Dan had given the BMW E30 325i to us at Rally Prep to get ready to take on the challenges of an event which forms the first round of the BTRDA championship. The decision to involve us came after the Brands Hatch Stages, where it became clear that the demands of the Dean would need a far better steering rack and brakes than the car had at that point. We happily took the BMW in and gave her a good sort out before dropping her off with the guys in time for scrutineering. Although the snow and ice of last year’s Dean was absent, the stages were still very slippery
and both Chris and Dan had their work cut out to simply stay on the stages, never mind getting through quickly, but the BMW showed itself to be a great car in the conditions and the guys were smiling ear to ear by the end of the first daunting stage, and were really upbeat and happy with the car. The second stage proved to be the end of the event for many crews, unfortunately including Chris and Dan after they landed heavily over a jump holing the sump. They did get to the finish of the stage, but with the car rapidly dropping oil the only sensible decision was to retire and save the motor for another day. So, an untimely end to what was turning out to be a massive adrenalin rush for the guys, and great to watch for the spectators with Chris spectacular and sideways throughout! Evidence of the difficult nature of this years Dean was the overall rate of attrition with 40% of the field forced into retirement before the end of the rally. Check out You Tube for a taste of how they got on - >
Sideways News So ‘Project Shed’ (as she has affectionately been dubbed) came back to Cornwall for some love and attention – and following the usual post rally TLC, a new sump (and a few modifications to prevent the same problem happening again!) she is ready to grace the stages once more – with the Nicky Grist Stages in July being the next planned outing.
