Hellenic Heritage Achievement and National Public Service Award
The illustration of the Hellenic Heritage and National Public Service Award is based upon the many images of the Goddess of Victory that appear on the approximately 300 extant Panathenaic amphorae which—filled with oil from the olive trees sacred to Athena— was the highest prize bestowed upon the victorious athletes, musicians and poets of the quadrennial Panathenaic Festival, the single most important festival celebrated in ancient Athens. The award is carved by sculptor Constantine L. Seferlis. Inspired by the glorious architecture of his birthplace Athens, Mr. Seferlis was best known for his craftsmanship at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC, where for 18 years he designed and carved more than 150 original pieces on the interior and exterior including gargoyles, flowers and the universe of decoration that is the heart of Gothic architecture. Mr. Seferlis worked extensively in Washington, D.C. including at the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument. Since 1982, he had been the preservation architect at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington DC where he was in charge of restoration of the “Castle” and thirteen other Smithsonian Museum buildings. He was inducted into the National Sculptor Society in New York in 1971 and the National Academy of Design in 1974. He also starred in the 1984 Academy Award winning documentary film “The Stone Carvers.” Mr. Seferlis passed away March 27, 2005 at the age of 76.

International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) For its extraordinary and generous response to the needs of a suffering world, AHI Presents the Hellenic Heritage National Public Service Award to IOCC.
International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC) was formed in the crucible of crisis more than two decades ago and has continued to meet the needs of the world’s most vulnerable people and communities in the midst of historic upheaval — from the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the wars in the former Yugoslavia, to the current civil war in Syria and ongoing economic crisis gripping Greece. As the official humanitarian aid agency of the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of North and Central America, IOCC has provided $438 million in humanitarian assistance to vulnerable people in more than 50 countries. Prior to 1992, Orthodox Christians in North America had no mechanism for responding in a unified way to emergencies in the United States or around the world. Additionally, with the Eastern European revolutions of 1989 and the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991, the plight of people of all faiths living in historically Orthodox countries came to new light in the West. The idea was to set a new standard for Orthodox philanthropy, both in terms of quality of service and efficiency of delivery. Since then, IOCC has maintained a steadfast commitment to offer emergency relief and development programs to those in need worldwide, without discrimination, and to strengthen the capacity of the Orthodox Church to respond. The organization’s close cooperation with the Orthodox Church in the host countries where it serves provides an opportunity to reach that country’s most vulnerable. When massive wildfires swept through southern Greece in 2007 and destroyed large swaths of farmland, homes and forests, IOCC provided more than 3,300 metric tons of animal feed to 3,000 farmers in the Peloponnese, and partnered with a local economic development agency to implement a longterm recovery program. Since 2011, IOCC in cooperation
with Apostoli, the humanitarian arm of Archdiocese of Athens, has responded to the country’s economic crisis with more than $10 million in the delivery of medical support, heating fuel, food and job assistance programs to Greece’s most vulnerable children, families and elderly. Support for these activities came from the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America and the pan-Orthodox community in America. In Syria, where more than six million people have been displaced by a three-year civil war, IOCC with church partner, the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Antioch and All the East, is among very few humanitarian organizations still inside Syria, delivering food and medical assistance, blankets, bedding and heating stoves to families living in some of the most volatile regions. IOCC is also responding to the urgent needs of thousands of Syrian people living as refugees in Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq and Armenia, reaching more than 890,000 people impacted by the war. IOCC’s relief work in this embattled region builds upon past successful experience serving in other conflict affected countries such as Bosnia-Herzegovina, and the Occupied Palestinian Territories of East Jerusalem, West Bank and Gaza. IOCC also works closely with the Church’s humanitarian arms in Serbia, Romania, Ethiopia, Kosovo and elsewhere to assist millions of people whose lives have been torn apart by natural and manmade disasters throughout the world. IOCC is there, helping improve lives, strengthening communities, and taking care of people when no one else will. In recognition of the commitment of its members and extraordinary and generous response to the needs of a suffering world, we present the International Orthodox Christian Charities with the Hellenic Heritage National Public Service Award this eighth day of March, 2014 at our Thirty-ninth Anniversary Dinner.

Jerry Couvaras
President & CEO, Atlanta Bread and Bake One For innovation in the hospitality industry and life-long commitment to the promotion and preservation of Hellenism
It takes a strategic person to accumulate tools that he knows may only serve a distant goal. It takes a visionary to look to a far-reaching future confident of an outcome that exists only in his mind. And it takes a true leader to do today what he knows will be of most value to the greatest number of people tomorrow. Jerry Couvaras is that strategist, that visionary, and that leader. He applies the same principles for achievement in both his business endeavors and in his active support of the causes he holds dear. To his clients, this means they can trust that he has a clear sightline to the outcome that will best meet their needs, delivering exactly what they want while bringing new ideas to the market for the need they haven’t yet identified. To his charitable causes, he exemplifies action. On a visit to Greece as a teenager in 1974, he learned what he knew would be a lifelong compulsion to exact change, and he identified ways his passion could best serve and make a difference. Throughout his adult life, he’s been devoted to Hellenic causes in three countries; his support spanning political, cultural, and social sectors. He graciously serves as a Trustee of Woodruff Arts Center, and sits on the Boards of Directors with The Hirsch Academy, FOCUS (Families of Children Under Stress), and Concorde Fire Soccer Club. Jerry’s early career success in South Africa saw him
thrive in investment banking, where he gained invaluable internal exposure in a wealth of industries. This afforded him limitless opportunities once here in the US. Upon making Atlanta his home some twenty years ago, he saw a sandwich chain as a smart early investment not for what it was, but for what it could be, and he soon capitalized on the company’s expansion potential to set new standards in the market. Recognition for such initiatives came rapidly. In 2003, he was a finalist for Ernst & Young’s Southeast Businessman of the Year. Today, Bake One and Atlanta Bread develop and supply new product innovation for some of the largest global customers based here in the US, while exporting to fifteen countries worldwide. Jerry continues to stand as a model of success. He’s been featured in high-profile business publications, including Donald Trump’s The Way to The Top, and has been a guest speaker at such recognized establishments as NYU and others. Among the life achievements he’s most proud of are his devotion to his wife Helen and their four children; Alexandra, Anastasia, Steve, and Dino. In his downtime, Jerry enjoys soccer, tennis, skiing, and spending quality time with his family. With gratitude for his outstanding achievements and life-long service to our nation and community, we present Jerry Couvaras with the Hellenic Heritage Achievement Award this eighth day of March, 2014, at our Thirty-ninth Anniversary Dinner.

The Ambassador Message by the Greek Ambassador Christos Panagopoulos I feel, once again, very proud and honored to extend my best wishes to the leadership and this year’s honorees of the American Hellenic Institute (AHI), as well as to all of the distinguished guests, who will be joining us tonight, on the occasion of the 39th Anniversary Hellenic Heritage Achievement and National Public Service Awards Dinner. It is a widely accepted fact, both here in the United States and in Greece, that the American Hellenic Institute, since it was founded, almost forty years ago, has constantly been one of most important pillars of the Greek-American activities in the nation’s capital and beyond. AHI is making its presence felt, in a very professional and effective manner, in Washington’s opinionmaking circles. It plays a very active and energetic advocacy and policy-shaping role on the Hill, while it offers valuable and well researched opinions and ideas to government officials, foreign policy analysts, journalists and the wider public, using all available tools and avenues. It organizes successful events, it contributes articles and commentary to influential local, national and international media, it offers in-depth and timely analysis of current events and, more generally, spares no effort in strengthening the voice of the Greek-Americans in Washington. US decision makers, in and out of the Administration, have always welcomed and appreciated AHI’s work in helping them understand, explore and analyze the major foreign policy issues that involve Greece and Cyprus, but also the US, in the wider region of the Balkans and the Eastern Mediterranean. Also, let us not forget the visits that AHI is very successfully organizing every year for its leadership, but also for students and young professionals with the aim to foster stronger bonds between the members of Greek-American Community and the motherland. Furthermore, during the last few years, AHI has started a promising relationship of dialogue and cooperation with the Jewish-American Organizations, based on interests and principles that these vibrant communities share in the United States. But this evening we are also here to pay tribute to the four distinguished honorees. They are Jerry Couvaras, International Orthodox Christian Charities (IOCC), Timothy J. Maniatis, Poulette Poulos and Representative Dina Titus. I would dare to say that their work and their achievements speak for themselves. Tonight they get the recognition they so much deserve, thanks to AHI, that has put together tonight’s event and has made possible for these brilliant and worthy individuals to receive a hard earned award of everything they do inspired by the same values that Greece and the United States of America share. I highly appreciate having been offered this opportunity to acknowledge the work and achievements of such a leading organization as AHI and I am looking forward to many more years of a close and fruitful collaboration with its members and leadership, so we can together promote our common values and interests.

2013 Annual Report Introduction Dear Members and Friends: It affords me great pleasure to present the 2013 AHI Annual Report. All of AHI’s policy-based programs and initiatives that advance the best interests of the United States on issues of importance to Greek Americans are encapsulated in this report. In 2013, AHI issued 71 press releases detailing our numerous policy activities and events. These activities included: the 38th Annual Hellenic Heritage Achievement and National Public Service Awards Dinner; the 12th annual “Future of Hellenism in America” conference; the 10th Annual Awards Dinner in Athens; our annual “Congressional Salute to Greek Independence Day” on Capitol Hill; our annual trips to Greece and Cyprus, including our 5th Annual Study Abroad Program; and our numerous public policy conferences and forums. At AHI, the majority of our efforts focus on advancing U.S. relations with Greece and Cyprus as in the best interests of the U.S., and to support the Greek American community. To this effect, we engaged policy makers in the administration and Congress through numerous action alerts, letters, testimony, and face-toface meetings with a significant number of congressional staff persons in 2013. When appropriate, AHI showcased commentaries, letters, and op-ed pieces critical of Turkey’s foreign policy positions as well as crafting our own op-eds and letters to the editor to mainstream and Greek American media outlets. We also continued to keep our audience informed with our Policy Statements, Capital Report, and foreign policy forums. Moreover, the AHI Foundation contributes to keeping our members engaged with the publication of its Online Policy Journal. The journal addresses a set of national and international issues pertinent to the interests of Greece, Cyprus, and the United States. Finally, with respect to the policy front, we saw the early fruits of our collaboration with the Hudson Institute titled the “Eastern Mediterranean Security Project” as a set of high-profile commentaries were published. In 2013, AHI wrapped-up its ambitious series of Town Hall Screenings of “Cyprus Still Divided: A U.S. Foreign Policy Failure” throughout North America. All told, AHI brought the AHI Foundation-supported documentary to 25 major metropolitan cities. I appreciated the tremendous community support for the project that made this important public awareness campaign a grassroots success. Although this campaign concluded, I am proud of
an AHI-backed congressional resolution on Cyprus introduced in April that has received bipartisan support. Also, AHI’s annual commemoration of the invasion of Cyprus held on Capitol Hill in July led to outspoken bipartisan consensus for action on Cyprus. In addition, AHI hosted a series of Noon Forums that included a timely look at Cyprus’s banking crisis and remembered pivotal moments of our Hellenic history such as Oxi Day and the Smyrna Catastrophe. Furthermore, we had a parade of visiting dignitaries from Greece and Cyprus visit Hellenic House. This included Greece’s Minister of Defense Dimitris Avramopoulos, Cyprus’s new Ambassador to the U.S. George Chacalli, and a host of top Greek diplomatic and military officials, among others. We accomplished all of these initiatives and much more thanks to the dedication of AHI’s Board of Directors and Policy Fellows, and with the assistance from our staff, and support from our members, who I encourage to take advantage of wonderful member-benefit program AHI launched in 2013 with Stream Energy. The program also benefits AHI. Please visit AHI’s website for details.
2014: Keeping our Policy Agenda Visible AHI aspires to build upon the programs and initiatives that were offered in 2013. We are always looking for innovative ways to improve service to our membership base, to better address our core agenda, and to cultivate opportunities to positively influence the Greek American community and U.S. relations with Greece and Cyprus. We aspire to do so amid ongoing challenging economic times. We will continue to seek your support as we strive to meet our basic mission as advocates for the rule of law. The eastern Mediterranean remains a region of immense importance to U.S. interests, and we must advance and promote policies that embrace the rule of law in the region. Greece has assumed the six-month rotating presidency of the EU, and there is hope that 2014 will be a year it turns around its economic condition. In 2014, the division of the Republic of Cyprus will approach a dubious distinction—40 years. We remain vigilant as a joint communique laying the groundwork for resumption of settlement talks is expected. Little, if any, progress with respect to religious freedom in Turkey, the plight of the Ecumenical Patriarch and the Patriarchate was realized. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom’s disappointing “about face” in its 2013 annual report that upgraded Turkey’s status by two tiers cannot be tolerated. Turkey’s troublesome foreign
policy direction, which includes Turkish aggression in the Aegean and bellicose threats against Israel and Cyprus as they develop oil and gas reserves within their Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), is ongoing. The FYROM name-recognition issue remains at a stalemate as Skopje continues to press for NATO membership. All of these issues require our collective attention and action. Together, we continue our ongoing work to educate Congress on the issues. The 113th Congress remains divided. In addition, we must work with the Obama Administration and the State Department to ensure that our issues remain at the forefront of the administration’s foreign policy agenda and that the policy commitments the president made to the community are kept. We must remind legislators and policymakers that despite difficult economic conditions, Greece and Cyprus remain loyal allies and contribute greatly to U.S. security and economic interests in the eastern Mediterranean. Finally, AHI looks to build upon the momentum generated by uplifting programs such as our study abroad initiative for college students or our outreach to the Jewish American community while exploring additional ways to encourage growth in commerce, trade, and investment between the United States and Greece and Cyprus. In particular, AHI continues to pursue efforts with United Airlines, working with AHEPA and American Jewish organizations, to establish a direct airline route from Washington, DC to Athens that continues to Tel Aviv. On the policy front, AHI looks forward to additional initiatives that will spring forth from the collaboration with Hudson Institute, including a policy conference, a congressional briefing, and op-ed pieces. I am deeply grateful and appreciative of the members, officers and staff for their dedication. Everyone worked together to make 2013 another productive year. Alongside our own activities in Washington, AHI’s strength relies on the many significant contributions and generous support of our members. We also look to you to communicate your suggestions, share your knowledge, and provide your insights so that we can continue to fulfill the needs of our most valuable asset—our members. Thank you. Warmest regards,
Nick Larigakis, President
Public Policy: An Overview 2013 Policy Statements on Greek American Issues The American Hellenic Institute released its 2013 Policy Statements, which present issues affecting the Greek American community as they pertain to United States relations with Greece, Cyprus, and Turkey. In essence, the statements set the course for AHI’s policy direction for the year. The policy statements are distributed to high-ranking government officials and policymakers. They also serve as a guide when communicating positions to U.S. policy makers and the media. The positions are based on the best interests of the United States. The policy statements were approved by several membership-based organizations including: American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association (AHEPA), American Hellenic Council of California, Armenian National Committee of America (ANCA), Cyprus Federation of America, Evrytanian Association of America “Velouchi,” Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC), Hellenic American National Council (HANC), International Coordination Committee-Justice for Cyprus (PSEKA), Pancretan Association of America, Pan-Pontian Federation of U.S.A and Canada, Panepirotic Federation of America, and United Chios Societies of America and Canada. The 2013 policy statements also included AHI’s fact sheet detailing Greece’s contributions to United States interests in the eastern Mediterranean and to NATO.
Greece-Turkey Relations AHI closely monitors Greece-Turkey relations to keep key U.S. government officials apprised of developments that affect U.S. interests in the eastern Mediterranean. AHI supports a policy that encourages a normalization of relations between the two countries and is firmly based on international law and a reversal of aggression. AHI also believes that it is in the best interest of the U.S. to support stable relations between these two countries by proactively promoting the rule of law. In particular, AHI notes the following areas as the fundamental causes of problems between Greece and Turkey: • Turkey’s unilateral claims against sovereign Greek territory in the Aegean in violation of international law, and its refusal to refer its unilateral claims to binding international arbitration; • Turkey’s aggression against Cyprus and its continuing illegal occupation of 37.3 percent of Cyprus; • Turkey’s continuing violations of Greece’s territorial waters and airspace; and Illegal immigration via Turkey that threatens Greek democracy. In sum, the threat of casus belli still stands and a considerable number of formal complaints were made by Greece over continued violations by Turkey of the Greek airspace and territorial waters.
2013 ANNUAL REPORT
The Cyprus Problem AHI supports a settlement of the Cyprus problem through negotiations based on a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation in a state with a single sovereignty and international personality, incorporating the norms of a constitutional democracy embracing key American principles, the EU acquis communautaire and EU Founding Treaty, UN resolutions on Cyprus, the pertinent decisions of the European Court of Human Rights and of other European Courts -- as is the best interests of the United States. One of AHI’s primary objectives is to keep the Cyprus issue, the basis for a solution, and the ongoing violations of religious freedom and destruction of cultural heritage in Turkish-occupied Cyprus at the forefront of the policy debate in Washington. Fundamental to this approach are AHI meetings with U.S. government officials and their staffs and government representatives from Greece and Cyprus. These meetings are important tactics to help forge closer cooperation, foster greater understanding, and stimulate new ideas as all parties work toward a Cyprus resolution. For example, AHI worked to introduce a congressional resolution that condemned any attempt to use Cyprus’s economic crisis as a means of imposing a settlement on the people of Cyprus (H.Res.187). Additionally, AHI continues to push for greater public and governmental awareness of the issue. AHI accomplishes this task by submitting numerous letters to the editors of prominent print media outlets, sending letters to government officials, producing op-ed pieces, and the dissemination of action alerts. However, it was AHI’s series of “Town Hall Screenings” of the one-hour documentary “Cyprus Still Divided: A U.S. Foreign Policy Failure” that has helped to keep the Cyprus issue in the public’s eye. Thanks to AHI, the documentary has been screened internationally and in 25 major metropolitan areas in North America since its launch in 2010. The documentary has aired on Detroit Public Television and Maryland Public Television. Finally, AHI’s commitment to Cyprus is demonstrated by two annual visits to Cyprus. Finally, AHIF continues to introduce a younger generation of Greek Americans to Cyprus and Greece with its second annual Foreign Policy Study Abroad Program.
FYROM Name-Recognition The FYROM name-recognition issue is included in the AHI Policy Statements, which call on the U.S. “to consider withdrawing its 2004 recognition of FYROM as the ‘Republic of Macedonia’”if FYROM refuses to cooperate in negotiations. The statements also advocate for a position that FYROM will not join NATO and the European Union until the name dispute is resolved. Throughout 2013, AHI embarked on initiatives to raise awareness to help end the misappropriation of the name “Macedonia” by the Former Yugoslav Republic of “Macedonia” (FYROM). For example, AHI submitted written testimony to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations that opposed U.S. aid to FYROM and applauded favorable language on the FYROM issue that appeared in a foreign relations reauthorization bill.
The Ecumenical Patriarchate AHI reiterated its unequivocal position on what actions the U.S. government should take to secure religious freedom for the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Turkey in the 2013 Policy Statements. AHI urges the U.S. government to use its influence with the Turkish government to safeguard the Ecumenical Patriarchate, its personnel, and its property; and to reopen the Halki Patriarchal School of Theology. AHI underscores that, “Under the International Religious Freedom Act of 1998, the President is obligated to oppose violations of religious freedom in any country whose government ‘engages in or tolerates violations of religious freedom and promote the right to religious freedom in that country.’” Furthermore, the Act obligates the President to take one or more of 15 enumerated actions with respect to any such country. In 2013 AHI continued to raise awareness of religious restrictions in Turkey, including in statements such as the one highly critical of the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF), which significantly upgraded Turkey’s status in its annual report. AHI also activated the grassroots to urge U.S. representatives to cosponsor a resolution calling for Turkey to respect the rights and religious freedoms of the Ecumenical Patriarchate.

AHI observed the 39th anniversary of Turkey’s illegal invasion of the Republic of Cyprus by hosting a congressional briefing and forum to discuss the current state of affairs on the island at the Rayburn House Office Building on Capitol Hill, July 25, 2013. The briefing’s forum allowed members of Congress on both sides of the aisle to engage in a candid discussion about how issues affecting Cyprus can be advanced on Capitol Hill and within federal agencies, including its 39year division and its energy findings. The briefing, held in cooperation with the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, featured U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-NJ), chairman, Senate Committee on Foreign Relations; U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs; U.S. Rep. Gus Bilirakis (RFL), co-chair, Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues; U.S. Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), cochair, Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues; U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (RFL), former chairman, House Committee on Foreign Affairs; U.S. Rep. AHI celebrated the 192nd anniversary of Greek Independence Day by hosting its annual “Congressional Salute to Greek Independence Day,” on March 20, 2013. The common democratic ideals held by Greece and the United States were reaffirmed by several members of Congress at the event which was held in cooperation with the cochairs of the Congressional Caucus on Hellenic Issues, U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis (R-FL) and Carolyn Maloney (D-NY). AHI President Nick Larigakis served as Master of Ceremonies. Members of Congress who addressed the audience included (in order of appearance): U.S. Reps. Gus Bilirakis (RFL), Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Brad Sherman (D-CA), Dina Titus (D-NV), and Frank Pallone (DNJ). Special guest speakers were Ambassador of Greece to the U.S. Christos Panagopoulos, Chargé d’affaires Olympia Neocleous, Embassy of Cyprus to the United States, and AHEPA Executive Director Basil Mossaidis.
AHI Submits Testimony to House Appropriations Subcommittee on FY2014 Foreign Aid AHI submitted testimony to the House of Representatives Appropriations Subcommittee on State, Foreign Operations, and Related Programs on foreign aid proposals for FY2014 on March 20, 2013. In the best interests of the United States, AHI’s testimony opposed: any military assistance the administration will request for Turkey until Turkey removes its troops and illegal Turkish settlers in Cyprus; aid the administration will request for the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM); and any reduction that might be introduced in the aid levels for the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus. In addition, the testimony strongly opposed any reduction of Economic Support Fund (ESF) funding for Cyprus. However, AHI testified that it supports continued ESF funding for Cyprus as long as it is tied exclusively to bicommunal projects of the island as mandated by U.S. law. The law states U.S. funds are to support only “measures aimed at reunification.”

AHI released a letter to the editor it submitted to the New York Times in response to a Feb. 4, 2013 column titled, “European Union’s Leverage Over Cyprus is Ephemeral” by Paul Taylor. The columnist suggested the European Union utilize the Republic of Cyprus’s current economic condition as leverage for a solution to the republic’s 38-year division. In his letter, AHI President Nick Larigakis states this notion is unacceptable and identifies flawed points made by Taylor. Among them, Taylor regrets the failure of the Annan Plan, placing blame on the Greek Cypriots. Larigakis corrects the record on the Annan Plan, citing the inclusion of last-minute demands in the Plan by Turkey. Taylor also laments the absence of the United States in the Cyprus peace process. Larigakis rebutted Taylor, stating what the United States’ role should be to exert its influence on Turkey to play a supportive and not detrimental role in the peace process. Larigakis concluded, “Clearly, Turkey is the obstacle to peace and its own progress toward EU accession.” AHI released a letter to the editor it submitted to the New York Times in response to a March 27, 2013 article titled “For Cyprus, A Sudden Need to Play Nice with Turkey,” by James Kanter. The article suggests Cyprus may need to “brush up” its relations with Turkey in the wake of its banking crisis, the challenge of bringing natural gas reserves to market, and Israel’s apology to Turkey over the Gaza flotilla incident three years ago. In his letter, AHI President Nick Larigakis rebuts this notion stating, “…it is Turkey that continues a policy of non-recognition of Cyprus and pursues an aggressive and provocative stance toward Cyprus and its right to explore for natural resources within its exclusive economic zone.” Larigakis concludes, “If Turkey yearns to become an energy hub, then it is the one that must normalize relations with Cyprus.”

College Student Foreign Policy Study Trip to Greece and Cyprus June 18 – July 4, 2014
To stand in a place where, for generations, Christians stood in awe and reverence of the Creator of all, where incense and psalmody once rose from earth to Heaven in praise of the God who became man; but now stands abandoned and desecrated, with no respect or honor given to things of the earth or of Heaven, is truly a powerful and moving experience. – Manoli Anagnostiadis, University of Maryland, upon viewing a desecrated Church in occupied Cyprus in 2012.
The AHIF Foreign Policy trip to Cyprus and Greece was an invaluable experience. Through briefings with prominent government officials, and experiences like visiting the occupied territory of Cyprus, I gained an understanding why it is important to lobby for Greek and Cypriot issues in the United States. The study trip made me a betterinformed Greek American and has put me in a position where I can make a difference and advocate for Greek and Cypriot issues in America. – Michael Savvas, University of San Diego (2010 trip)
The AHIF trip is something I will never forget. I am returning to the United States with new friends, amazing memories, and as a more learned person because of this foreign policy trip. I wouldn’t trade those two weeks for anything. – Lia Seremetis, University of Cincinnati (2009 trip)
For more information on how to apply, visit: http://ahiworld.org/for-students/policy-trip.html or email Yola Pakhchanian at yolap@ahiworld.org
