ur area is said to be the one piece of Lower Michigan that looks most like places that stir the soul with their natural beauty in the North. For those fortunate enough to call this place home, every day can bring a sigh of amazement at nature’s beauty and a whisper of wonder at its majesty. Visitors who come to kayak or walk our trails, who swim in our 300 plus lakes or bike and ski on our more than 20,000 acres of public land wish they could stay -- or make immediate plans to return. Beyond nature, though, we offer similar charm with the life of culture, shopping, and dining offered in our communities. We celebrate every season with festivals, concerts, children’s activities, and more. With this edition of 101+ Things to Do, we offer a guide to the fun, enjoyment, and satisfaction that awaits in our area whether you’re a resident or just lucky enough to be passing through. Use the calendar to plan, read the more detailed articles and use them to map a path of discovery. You’ll be greeted with smiles and old-time handshakes, welcomes that express our gratitude for your choice to spend your time and invest your entertainment dollars with us. We love our natural beauty gifts and we’re happy to share them because, whether you’re a resident or just passing through, when you help promote our local economy, you allow us another lasting investment in our region. Shop the ads and browse the highlights inside this year’s issue of 101+ Things to Do and we’ll look to welcome you with a good old-fashioned smile and handshake at one of our natural, cultural, and recreational wonders.

HASTINGS CITY BAND CONTINUES SUMMER TRADITION The Hastings City Band will continue its more than 150-yearold tradition of bringing music to visitors and residents through free summer concerts. The Wednesday concerts will be on the courthouse lawn June 12, 19, 26, and July 3 and 10, beginning at 7:30 pm. The Hastings City Band and John Philip Sousa arrived the same decade — Sousa in 1854 and the musical group in ² VR LWÂśV HYHQ PRUH ÂżWWLQJ that works of The March King are part of the repertoire nearly every week. Musical pieces by contemporary composer James Swearingen also add to

the weekly concerts, as does Hoagy Carmichael’s “Georgia on My Mind, a favorite of conductor Joe LaJoye. A mix of marches, big band pieces, ballads and contemporary tunes round out the free concerts, and guest performers often join the band. As the calendar gets nearer to the Fourth of July, patriotic music is added to the play list, culminating with special recognition of veterans attending the concert just before July 4. Although the band plays in Hastings, the volunteer musicians who make up the

band hail also from Delton, Middleville, Lake Odessa and many other communities. Any musicians high school age or older who are interested in joining the band need only show up at the Hastings High School band room the Tuesday prior to the concert at 7:30 pm. Concert-goers should bring along chairs or blankets to sit on. In the event of rain, concerts will be at the Barry Community Foundation building (formerly the First Presbyterian Church) in the former Leason Sharpe Hall.

After several years of performing at Fish Hatchery Park, the Hastings City Band last year returned to its original venue, the Barry County Courthouse lawn. 20

CONCERT SERIES HIGHLIGHTS MICHIGAN FARMERS HALL OF FAME For more than 30 years, the Aukerman family of Prairieville has done its part to keep oldtime, family country music alive. Now that Bill and Maggie Aukerman have turned over operations of their Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame Music Barn to son, John, new family music traditions are being mixed in with the standards, to the delight of everyone who visits. After having already kicked off the season with three dates, including the May 4 return of Elvis Presley Jr. to the Prairieville stage, concert promoters are tuning up for a thunderous summer and fall schedule that

will feature the June 1 Rick Fox Gospel Show, along with All About Him followed by the June 22 appearance by Denny and Michelle and Friends accompanied by Sentimental Journey. Both shows begin at 6 pm. The Railroad Junkies play Aug. 3 at 7 pm with the Country Music Hall of Fame Induction Show slated for Aug. 30, also at 7 pm. A memorial concert in honor of Prairieville friends and regulars Jim Fritzler and Homer Jones is scheduled for Aug. 31 with the series’ last two shows being highlighted by the Thunder Floor Cloggers and North Country Flyers Sept 21

and Oct. 12. The Cloggers will begin each of those concerts at 6 pm with the North Country Flyers following at 7 pm. Tickets range from $6 to $8 and are available at the door. For more ticket information, call Denny Crum, 616-723-6329, or Dave Dickerson, 517-6452937. Proceeds from the summer concert series fund the Michigan Farmers Hall of Fame, also located at the Music Barn’s home at 7650 Milo Road, just south of Delton. More information is available on the concert series website at www.MichiganHallofFameMusicBarn. org.

LOWELL RIVERWALK FESTIVAL The Riverwalk Festival enters its 19th year, which started as a fundraiser when the Township decided to hire WKHLU ¿UVW HYHU SDLG employee. At that time they held it on Labor day Weekend, and it was quite a bit different then it is now. The only thing we still do is the arts and craft and the duck race. For Liz Baker, the director of the Chamber of Commerce, the past 19 years have been a blur. “Today Riverwalk is the Chamber of Commerce’s major fundraiser and at the same time it has grown into a really fun family festival in Lowell,” Baker said. “Many other events have sprouted since then.” This year the festival added a motorcycle ride and rumble, and a parade where people on the sidelines give out canned food for donation, instead of candy. “We do pontoon rides, kayak and canoe racing,” Baker said. “We have entertainment as well. This year we will be doing something a little different with open mic, where people can come up to the stage and demonstrate their talents.” Baker has called the festival a three day event, which has become one full day and two 68

nights that takes summer concerts and roll it into one. The Kent County Youth Fair royal court will be hosting a royal court breakfast, and are planning on hosting it on the showboat. “We have to wait to see of the showboat is deemed safe to use,” Baker said. “We have had some issues that we have had to address because of the ÀRRG ´ There won’t be a poker run this year, but a regular motorcycle run where they will hand out prizes and ride out XQWLO WKH ¿QDO GXFN UDFH The turnout last year was around 15,000 in those three days, whether it was for just WKH ¿UHZRUNV RU DOO RI WKH RWKHU activities. “I think we will have a lot of people come out whether it was as hot as last year or not,” Baker said. Riverwalk will take place in the historic portion of Lowell on

July 11,12 and 13, going from SP WR SP RQ WKH ¿UVW WZR days, and 10 am into the night RQ WKH WKLUG DQG ¿QDO GD\ Fireworks from Stoney Lakeside will begin at 10:15 pm sharp after the 5 pm duck race on the river. Pre-numbered tickets will be sold for the duck race which goes in the river for a chance to be a $1,000 winner. “The last couple of years the duck sales haven’t been great,” Baker said. “We’ve always been right around 6,000-6,500 ducks.” There will be a photo-booth run by Modern Photographics, where a ticket purchased for the duck race can be used to get a free picture taken. The two decade old festival will provide a food court which will include a pizza cart run by Flat River Grill, with a few other local businesses contributing with vendors.

NEW HOURS FOR LOWELL FARMERS MARKET The farmer’s market that Lowell is so accustomed to seeing in the spring has made several changes. The market will begin June 13 and run through Sept. 12, cutting nearly two months farmers had to sell portions of their crops. The reason for excluding

the eight weeks is due to the amount of competition, with every small town that now have markets of their own. The Lowell market started at the fairgrounds and drew VXFFHVV LQ LWV ÂżUVW IHZ \HDUV until Ada opened a market on Tuesdays. Market Masters Dave and Betty Dean revealed additional changes, which included the XVH RI WKH Ă€HD PDUNHW ZKLFK was only allowed at the farmer’s market once a month. Now it will return regularly every week. “We did try it last year, only doing it once a month and the people liked it,â€? Betty said. “They came to the market and LQ WXUQ WKH YHQGRUV SURÂżWHG from it.â€?

The market used to open in May and was held until the second week in October, but now it is expected to end in September, right after school begins in the area. The market will still take place at the Tractor Supply parking lot, where it has been for the last couple of years. Around a dozen vendors are expected this year for the market which will be held every Thursday afternoon. Closing in on their third year as market masters and their eighth year in participation, the Deans will be allowing the community booth again to expose local programs which included FROM, the library and the museum last year.
