For nearly 175 years, the YMCA has not only addressed the social needs of people from all age groups and backgrounds, it has been an advocate of nurturing potential, especially for young people. New shopping festival embraces Lowell Weekend in the Country (WITC is set to call the .ent County Fairgrounds home on June 21 and 22. The original Weekend in the Country started in 2011 about thirty-Âżve minutes north of Detroit in Davisburg, a town very similar to Lowell. The idea was to gather artisans, crafters, makers and doers to create a weekend of great shopping and memories. In September 2012, the inaugural Weekend in the Country was held. After recognizing the popularity and demand for an event like this in West Michigan, Handcrafters Show Management Co. (HC Shows started looking for the perfect place to mimic what worked so well in Davisburg. This led them to Lowell. With everything from gourmet foods, vintage Âżnds, apparel,
accessories, home decor and more, Weekend in the Country offers a little of something for everyone and suits the saying “You’ll leave happy you came.â€? In addition to great shopping, Sisters on the FlyÂŽ and their uniquely decorated trailers will be in attendance and offering tours of their trailers along with Camp Cooking: 101 demos. A certiÂżed appraiser will also be on site hosting “What It’s Worth Appraisalâ€? on Sunday from 11 am to 3 pm. Each item appraised is $5. Hungry? WITC is also known for great food. The delicious offerings range from the Alto Lions Club serving their famous elephant ears, spiral fries and fried Âżsh to giant homemade cinnamon rolls baked fresh in northern Michigan...and plenty in-between. So what makes WITC so special? “Many have said it’s like Pinterest
and Etsy come to life while others appreciate us bringing all the things they love to one place. In all honesty, it’s a certain ambiance we strive to achieve. It’s all about gathering what makes us happy and sharing it for all the experience. This year, those four miles have been restored by adjusting the route to pass through Freeport. Last year’s race was shortened by a three-hour suspension for a lightning storm. The pair will return this year, competing with .aren Myers of Lowell and Colleen Anne Myers of Grand Rapids. The 2 -Hour Challenge will begin at am June 1 and ¿nish at am Sunday, June 15.

Clear Lake Located on M-37, south of Hastings about 11 miles, this fairly shallow body of water only averages about six to eight feet in depth, with occasional pockets of 20 feet. Spanning 300 acres, it is a clean lake near two campgrounds and provides beautiful scenery and a peaceful place for children and adults to catch Âżsh, such as crappie, largemouth bass and sunÂżsh. A boat launch, rustic restrooms and bait store are nearby.
Deep Lake West of Hastings (M-179 south of Yankee Springs Road , Deep Lake offers a rustic campground, hiking trails, mountain bike trails and a boat launch within Yankee Springs State Park. The lake has a maximum depth of about 35 feet and is surrounded by forests and wetlands. The 32acre lake offers Âżshing from shore, pier (handicap-accessible

There is also a wonderful opportunity this summer for youth to experience the art of theater at LowellArts!. Students ages 7-1 are

They will learn the basics of acting and will be cast in a show - The Adventures of Peter Rabbit and His Friends - to perform for their family and friends at the last class! Also this summer, LowellArts! is hosting at its facility a program by the organization Arts in Motion. And to culminate a great summer of fun, an outdoor Âżlm will be shown on the Riverwalk Plaza on August 22. The Âżlm is not yet named, as the community will be asked to vote for the one they wish to see! LowellArts! would also like to remind you to mark your calendars with the Fallasburg Fall Festival for the Arts on September 20 and 21, 10 am - 5 pm, at Fallasburg Park. Barry County Fair provides fun for the whole herd Summer just wouldn’t seem right to many without a trip to the Barry County Fair, which is set for July 1 to 19 at the Barry County Expo Center on M-37 between Hastings and Middleville. The theme for the 162nd Barry County Fair is “Fair Fun for the Whole Herd.â€? The week-long event includes games, rides, attractions, livestock shows, contests, nightly grandstand entertainment events and good food to suit every taste. A “seasonâ€? pass is $15 for adults and is good for all six days of the fair. Parking, and plenty of it, is always free. Grandstand events begin before the fair opens with a mule pull and Michigan championship pony pull Saturday, July 12; and Michigan heavyweight draft horse championship pull Sunday, July 13. Great Outdoors fun at “No Family Left Indoorsâ€? No family should be left inside on a beautiful summer evening in Michigan. That’s why three years ago Pennock Health Services teamed with several area nonproÂżt organizations to offer programs that encourage being outside and playing during the months of June, July and August. Several new locations and organizations are participating in this, the fourth year of the program.
All programs, which will be Tuesdays from 6:30 to pm, are free and include light refreshments. Participants are welcome to just show up, but preregistration is helpful for planning purposes. Registration can be done online, www.cedarcreekinstitute.org or www. atbarryoutdoorfun .com or by calling Pierce Cedar Institute directly, 269721- 190. The program has its origins in the No Family Left Inside national
initiatives that began after publication of the book Last Child Left in the Woods by Richard Louv. After research indicated children are spending less time outside just playing — which leads to poorer health, less understanding and appreciation for the natural world and declining social skills — No Family Left Indoors program organizers structured outlets by which children and families can interact with each other in the outdoors.
THIS YEAR’S NO FAMILY LEFT INDOORS PROGRAM SCHEDULE INCLUDES: June 3 ____ June 10 ___ June 17 ___ June 2 ___ July 1 _____ July _____ July 22 ____ July 29 ____ Aug. 5 ____ Aug. 12 ___

Bernard Museum peaks into area’s past on summer weekends The Bernard Museum has been operating steadily for more than 50 years with the help of several dedicated volunteers. This year it will get back to its youth. This summer will bring a special celebration, a birthday party honoring the people who were born at what was once Dr. Prosper Bernard’s hospital. Last year, volunteers put out a call to anyone who was born at the hospitalturned museum. Sunday, July 13, the museum will celebrate the babies who were born there in the late 1930s to early 19 0s. The Bernard Museum, which contains more than 25,000 preWorld War II artifacts spread throughout eight historic buildings, is open Sundays from June through September, and Saturdays, as well, in July and August, from 1 to 5 p.m. Admission is free; donations are encouraged.
