In The News: City manager updates City Council on MPS agreement The Marshall City Council received an update regarding the agreement with Marshall Public Schools for space at the city’s garage. City Manager Tom Tarkiewicz said the city discussed the “unique condo agreement” with the school district, where MPS would purchase part of the property with its bond proceeds. “They said they will be looking into that and other options for land and will be getting back with us sometime around Thanksgiving or shortly thereafter,” Tarkiewicz said. Ambulance Authority holds open house for new building The Marshall Area Fire Fighters Ambulance Authority held its open house on Nov. 17 at its new facility, located at 16984 Burlingame Dr. “It’s functional, but modest,” Executive Director Mark Burke said. “We are just looking to achieve the goal of providing services, not a lot more than that.” The facility, which began construction in May and was completed in October, cost just over $711,000. Local talent showcased at Riverside Pub Some have said that Riverside Pub’s open mic nights are one of Marshall’s best kept secrets. “We just wanted to support our local talent,” said Riverside owner Steve Bank. “And it doesn’t matter what your talent is, just come out and share it.” Every Wednesday night, a dozen or more local musicians come together to jam from 8-11 p.m. “It is supposed to be for true amateurs to sing or play who otherwise wouldn’t get any opportunity,” said former open mic manager Chris Bocanegra. “There is no other venue like this that caters to them. You don’t need to be a professional or have experience singing in front of people. We’ll invite anyone down.” See story on page 29
Fredonia Twp. board members recognized After two decades of service, Fredonia Twp. Supervisor Dave Sebring has stepped down from the helm. “I’ve enjoyed my time being on the board and have enjoyed the people who attend the meetings,” said Sebring, who retired following the Nov. 19 meeting. Also retiring from the board was 16-year Trustee Floyd Beneker. “After 16 years, it’s time for new ideas and new people,” Beneker said. “I’m happy to let go of the reins at this point.” Fredonia Twp. residents Doug Damon and Jerry Diver will replace the outgoing board members. “I think they’ll both do a great job,” Beneker said. “They’ve been attending the meetings for several years now.” See story on page 44
Welcoming the
MHS student-athlete Parker Cruz and his decision to not compete on the Sabbath Prior to his sophomore year in the summer of 2011, Marshall High School student and crosscountry runner Parker Cruz made a decision that he would no longer compete on the Sabbath, which for Cruz, a Seventh Day Adventist, is Saturday, the day many cross-country meets take place. Cruz says he reached his decision after hearing a sermon about the Ten Commandments. “Most people would have thought that I’d focused on the Sabbath commandment, to keep it holy,” said Cruz, now an MHS junior. “But, what struck me most was the commandment, Thou shalt have no other gods. The pastor was talking about how anything we had in our lives that we would put ahead of God, could become our god. For me, that was running.” See story on page 38

Word on the Street Do you get caught up in the Black Friday hype? Editor’s Corner by John Hendler On Thanksgiving, besides eating until we are just about to explode, watching football and eyeing the newspaper ads for Black Friday (or again in this year’s case, Black Thanksgiving Night) many of us take stock of our life and count our blessings. I’ll tell my family how thankful I am that, well, they’re my family, because despite the everyday ups and downs, I don’t know where I’d be without them. So, what’s the deal with the big retail stores kicking off their big sales Thanksgiving night? I thought the stores opening at 4 a.m. was bad enough, but 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving? I know that Thanksgiving is not considered a religious holiday, but it’s one of those few days each year that are usually devoted to being with family and dear friends. And now, it seems to also be spent with fellow shoppers and grumbling employees that will look fondly back on those midnight wakeup calls on Black Friday. You know, the good old days, when shoppers were a more hearty lot, heading out after Thanksgiving, not during. I’d often scoffed at those people who headed out in the middle of the night to line up for hours at a store, and I enjoyed watching people on TV fall over each other in a mad rush once the doors opened. But then I got to thinking about how extra special a gift would be because someone thought that I was important enough in their life to make them stand out in the cold and battle the masses to get that item just for me. On the other hand, maybe they’d only get a gift for me if they could find it at a bargain price. I’m only worth 50 percent off? Thinking positively however, I wonder if all those recipients of gifts purchased after Thanksgiving dessert know how special they are. Aside from Thanksgiving, how many of us remember to reflect and give thanks on a daily basis? Why can’t every day be Thanksgiving? I’m talking about the giving thanks part, not the eating part or else we’d never get up off the couch, or in my case, the floor. I think giving an all-encompassing thanks once a year is not what Thanksgiving is about. Think of it as a starting point for how we should be thankful the other 364 days of the year. I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving and survived Black Thanksgiving Night/Friday. Until next week, may the good news be yours.
Black Friday started even earlier this year, with some stores opening as early as 8 p.m. on Thanksgiving. With the holiday shopping season officially underway, would you say you get caught up in the Black Friday or Cyber Monday hype?

“I don’t go because I’m a deer hunter. I spend all my time out in the woods.”
“Our TV just broke, and I bought another one, but if there is a good deal I might take that one back. But there are already people waiting in line now. They must not have lives. If they were giving out beer and candy, I’d be there.”
“I do not partake. I’d rather spend time with my family and friends and sleep in.”
Kirk Schultz, Battle Creek
Robert Moubray, Springport
Dan Odette, Marshall
“Depends on if there are good deals or not. I follow the Black Friday ads through my e-mail. I have to work, so I can’t go, but I’ll be shopping from my phone.”
“Not at all. I’m not a shopper. I have my wife take care of that.”
“I hate that stuff. I’ve never went on Black Friday. I have a hard time going out one day a year to go shopping.”

The generosity of Marshall never ceases to amaze To the Editor: The generosity of Marshall never ceases to amaze me. This year, with the help of Delagrange Farm and
Steury Farm from Quincy and Black Cat Pumpkin Patch of Marshall, OERTHER’S was able to raise over $900 in donations
thru pumpkin sales. The proceeds were split this year between Marshall Area Community Services and the Fountain Clinic. Thank
you, Marshall! Kathleen Oerther, Marshall
Granddaughter writes Grandpa on Veterans Day To the Editor: After hearing about the letter my daughter had written me in 2001 that was published in the Nov. 10 ad-visor&chronicle, my granddaughter decided to write grandpa a letter, too. This is my 9-year-old granddaughter’s letter (prior to this year’s Veterans Day cere-
mony): For Grandpa on Veterans Day, I was curious how was it in the war? I hope Veterans Day will come soon. You are a good Grandpa. I hope you will have a good life, Grandpa. You are great at everything because you are the best at building stuff. My life is good
with you because you are really nice, Grandpa. I can’t believe you were in the war. I’m happy you didn’t get shot. Madison Joe Stephens, Marshall
Press release - Changes to Blue Cross not a ‘treat’ LANSING - A recent press briefing warned that Senate Bills 1293 & 1294 changing Blue Cross to an insurance company were a ‘trick - not a treat’ for Michigan citizens. Area Agencies on Aging Association of Michigan Director Mary Ablan said that if the bills pass as is, seniors will wake up one morning to find their Blue Cross insurance cancelled or their premiums nearly doubled. “The protections of the Affordable Care Act do not apply to Medicare Supplemental policies. That’s why we need Blue Cross to remain the insurer of last resort for Medigap policies,” said Ablan. “Unless the bills are amended by the House, Blue Cross will be able to – for the first time – turn away sick people and eliminate the policies altogether after four years. Ablan disagrees with statements made by Blue Cross Vice President Andy Hetzel that Medicare beneficiaries will be protected for 10 years under the legislation. “Hetzel says that the subsidy lowering premiums is guaranteed for 10 years, but that assumes the policies continue. Blue Cross had language inserted in the bills that allows them to eliminate the policies after
four years,” Ablan notes. “And most people I know plan to live for more than four years or even 10 years!” Rick Murdock of the Michigan Association of Health Plans spoke to his members’ concerns, noting that a state order for Blue Cross to change anti-competitive practices is scheduled to go into effect in January of 2013. He thinks the Blues’ push to pass the bills in the lame duck session is an effort to avoid that state order and continue business as usual. Former Attorney General Mike Cox . . . is challenging Blue Cross as well, specifically their practice of refusing to sell their “Legacy” Medigap policies to Ford and Chrysler retirees. Cox is now in private practice. In October, he filed a class action lawsuit against the Blues on behalf of a retired nurse who gets $150 a month from Ford in a health retirement account. She was told that she is not eligible for the BC Legacy policy because she is part of a group plan. However, Cox maintains that neither federal laws nor state laws allow any Medigap insurer to deny coverage for any reason in the first six months a beneficiary is on the Medicare program.
The Blues’ practice started several years ago when auto companies downsized their retiree health benefits. The Blues say that because the Ford and Chrysler retirees get a Health Retirement Account, that makes them ineligible for Medigap. However, the Blues will sell Medigap to GM retirees, because the company increased their pension benefit to make up for the loss of health insurance. The Blues’ practice has also been challenged by Attorney General Bill Schuette. Remember item pricing? Two years ago, the Michigan Legislature repealed Michigan’s longstanding law requiring all retailers to affix price stickers on most individual items in the store. The law was repealed at lightning speed, at the request of the Michigan Retailer’s Association, which said eliminating the law would save consumers $2.2 billion and improve the shopping experience. A study just released by Michigan Citizen Action says that consumers haven’t seen any savings as a result of the repeal and in fact, prices in Michigan have been consistently higher than the national average and growing at a faster rate than the national average – www.michcitizenaction.org.
