In The News: MPS Board to explore restructuring of elementary schools A larger than normal crowd turned out for the Marshall Public Schools Board of Education meeting on Jan. 14 to hear what Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis had to say about the possible restructuring of the district’s three elementary schools. Davis explained how there were imbalances in class size at each of the three elementary schools-Gordon, Hughes and Walters, with class size operating, in most cases, below the “ideal.” “We have a threeelementary system here in Marshall,” said Davis. “You really can’t get away from three buildings. You can’t close down one, because we can’t serve 943 students at two buildings. We have to use three buildings. How do we do this in the most economical way possible considering the incredible budget crunch we have in front of us? How do we do it without negatively affecting academic performance or social development?” See story on page 36

Bill Russell Memorial Blues Jam returns Jan. 26 to Marshall The 21st annual Bill Russell Memorial “Red, White and Blues Jam and Chili Cook-Off!” will rock the Marshall United Methodist Church (721 Old US 27 N. Marshall) on Saturday, Jan. 26 at 6 p.m. Blues Jam Coordinator Dee Russell said that she and her committee are gearing up for what has become a very popular event in Marshall. “The Blues Jam has built up a reputation of pulling together a wide variety of talented performers and top-notch vocalists,” Russell said. “Many bands come back year after year to share their talents and to help raise money for the Haven [of Rest Ministries in Battle Creek and its Veterans In Progress program].” Along with the music, there is a homemade chili contest which has more than 50 contestants. Woman plays 60 pipe organs by age 60 When Ellen Tipton of Battle Creek sought to come to terms with the aging process, she decided that instead of going into denial, she would embrace her next milestone birthday by embarking on a journey of self-discovery. That was back in September of 2010, when Ellen, at age 58 started a blog, SixtybySixty.tumblr.com. Since that date, Tipton’s goal is to play 60 pipe organs by her 60th birthday. “It’s just a good feeling to have completed my goal, and, I feel like this is what I need to do with my life,” Tipton said. Out of the 60 organs, four have been played in Marshall. On Jan. 27, Tipton will perform a recital in celebration not only of her completion of that goal, but in celebration of her birthday that day. The event, Sixty by Sixty: A Musical Journey Recital, will be held from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 61 N. 23rd St. in Battle Creek. See story on page 56

Word on the Street What makes your life meaningful? Editor’s Corner

According to Gallup, happiness levels of Americans are at a four-year high, with nearly 60 percent feeling happy without a lot of stress or worry, but according to the Center for Disease Control, about four out of 10 Americans have not discovered a satisfying life purpose and nearly a quarter of Americans don’t have a strong sense of what makes their lives meaningful.

by John Hendler

A crook, a cheat and a swindler From the “No Kidding” department: Lance Armstrong admits to Oprah Winfrey that he used performing enhancing drugs while competing in the world of cycling. If that were his only sin, most of us would eventually get around to forgiving him, more sooner than later. But like all great scandals, it’s not the initial lie, it’s the coverup that is hard to forgive. Or forget. Some people have that ability to flat out lie. Armstrong went on TV shows time after time swearing he never cheated, he “never doped.” Said Armstrong a few years back to Larry King: “If you consider my situation, a guy who came back, arguably, from a death sentence, why would I then enter into a sport and dope myself up and risk my life again? That’s crazy.” Crazy is as crazy does. What is harder to forgive is that Armstrong went after his detractors, even taking legal action against his accusers, knowing all the while that they were telling the truth and that he was telling lie after lie and ruining reputations in the process. I have told a fib or two (or three) in my life, but never have lied about something that would harm another. Lying about doping in a sport where it is an everyday occurrence can, on some level, be understandable. But Armstrong’s failure to come clean after hurting others was gutless. And that’s why so many people feel that Armstrong will be nothing more than a crook, a cheat and a swindler. Those words, if they sound somewhat familiar to you are from the movie, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, after Charlie’s grandfather expresses his displeasure with Mr. Wonka after denying Charlie his lifetime supply of chocolate. Even after that, Charlie still had the decency to return the Everlasting Gobstopper to Wonka. In Les Miserables, Jean Valjean, after years of hiding his identity, reveals himself so that an innocent man can go free. These of course, are fictional characters who did the right thing and every day, nearly all of us do the right thing as well. Sadly, it seems, that fewer and fewer of so-called “high profile” people do the right thing when the situation warrants. So Armstrong comes clean now, but it seems more about what’s still in it for Lance. Why now? Money, money, money. Armstrong lied to protect his lifestyle then and he’s “coming clean” to maintain what’s left of his lifestyle now. Armstrong confessed, but just enough to avoid lawsuits and keep his foot in the door to get back in the public’s favor someday. As has been the case from the start, it’s still about Lance. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

“My family, wonderful friends, my health and time spent in the great outdoors. These things make my life better and less stressful.”

“If I haven’t found my meaning in life yet, I don’t think I ever will because of my age. I guess I’ll keep searching. But I would say that intelligence, education and the freedom to think is meaningful.”

“Family and friends. It’s more prevalent now to spend time with family and friends because people are broke, but they are more happy because they are spending their time with family and friends.”

“The job I have. It’s important to find a career you love. And having family and friends to celebrate the good times with.”

“The love and support of family and friends through the adventures that have occurred throughout my life and those still to come in the future.”

“My family and being healthy and happy. Having the ability to wake up every day and smile and make others smile.”

Pastrami Joe’s, Subway support Marshall NHS students

To the Editor: The Marshall High School chapter of the National Honor Society would like to recognize and extend our sincerest gratitude to two outstanding businesses of the Marshall community. Pastrami Joe’s and Subway on Winston Drive both generously helped NHS students reward the two top seminar classes that col-

lected the most food for our annual MACS food drive. During the holiday season, NHS students organize a school wide food drive to help provide food for the MACS food pantry. NHS students compile a list of desired food items from MACS and distribute this list to each seminar class. The students in the seminar classes then take it upon

themselves to bring in as much of the items as possible. Over the years, the food drive has become not only a MHS tradition, but a way for all of our students to help others and understand the importance of giving to those in need. The support of both Pastrami Joe’s and Subway helped encourage students to bring even more food in hopes they would

enjoy the delightful pizza party or sub platters for their efforts. Again, on behalf of the staff and student body of Marshall High School, we hold PJ’s and Subway in high esteem. Shannon Clark and Tracy Haroff, National Honor Society Co-Advisors

‘One with a gun gets you two’ years in jail To the Editor: 2012 has shown a large increase in gun-related crimes in Battle Creek, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids and Detroit. Detroit had over 400 homicides; Chicago over 500. These statistics only reflect the dead, not the injured. 2012 also showed a large increase in police officers being injured or killed with illegal weapons. There is a subculture of those who dislike anyone in uniform and they are able to easily obtain guns, putting police officers in great danger. If we can’t get the guns out of these communities, let’s take illegal gun

users out of the community. Anyone can get a weapon, even juveniles, drug dealers, mental cases, convicted felons and gang members. The media never reports how many people with previous criminal convictions are convicted again of weapons possession. Since weapons are used so regularly in crimes, I suggest anyone convicted of possessing or purchasing an illegal weapon be sentenced to a mandatory two-year prison sentence, even is a crime has not been committed with the weapon. Eliminate all plea bargaining, specifically the reduced charge of attempting carrying a con-

cealed weapon and probation. A second conviction would result in a mandatory five-year prison sentence. Forget about probation, the psychobabble and other diversionary programs – they don’t work. Send the offenders to prison. The message is “one with a gun gets you two.” Two full years in prison may deter a person from having an illegal weapon while probation or a short period in jail probably will not. Edward O’Dowd, Marshall

Don’t rely on gov’t to make informed decisions on gun control To the Editor: Regarding the talks of banning guns, people really need to do their research. First of all, military-issue weapons are already illegal for civilian use and have been since 1986. Secondly, a Department of Justice study showed that

so-called “assault weapons” were used in only 2 percent of all gun crimes. Third, during the 11 years that there was an assault weapons ban (1993 to 2004), studies showed that it did nothing to curb gun crimes. The ban was not renewed, citing that it did

very little when it was in effect and would most likely do very little if renewed. Fourth, the AWB of 1993 was purely cosmetic. If a rifle had a pistol grip, it was illegal. Or if it had certain collapsible stocks or flash hiders. Not one of those things added to the lethality

of the gun. Do your research, people. The news media and the government aren’t going to tell you enough to make an informed decision about gun control. Don’t rely on them. Jason Toney, Marshall

January 22, 1972 to January 22, 2013 40 years of Legal Abortion through nine months of pregnancy. OVER 55 MILLION abortions have been performed in the United States since that time. 16 week unborn baby

The incredible photograph above by Dr. Rainer Jonas shows what a healthy, action intrauterine child looks like at 16 weeks. Like the bud of a flower, beautiful. But, unfortunately, a candidate for elective abortion.

Too Many! Too Long!

She Can Make A Tiny Fist Get Hiccups Suck Her Thumb Feel Pain

Yet She Can Be Legally Put To Death By Abortion Until The Day She Is Born

Putting Numbers into Perspective 65 million abortion is greater than the 2010 population of the following states combined: Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, Vermont, Massachusetts, West Virginia, Maryland, South Carolina, Mississippi, Montana, Wyoming, Arizona, Oregon and Alaska. The estimated 1.2 million abortions performed a year in America is higher than American deaths in combat during every war and conf lict in all of American history from 1775 to 2012. Using Gutmacher Institute figures through 2008 and estimating 1,200,000 abortions for 2009 through 2012 gives us an estimate of 55,757,299 lives ended prematurely in their mother’s womb since 1973, the year Roe v. Wade was decided. About 1 percent of these were performed for reasons of rape and incest. Only 4 percent list “physical problem with my health” as the most important reason for the abortion. We will never know what the world could have looked like with our missing generations. But we do know that the reality of abortion is gruesome.

Understanding and repairing today’s transmissions has become as complicated as the engines in today’s new cars. We generally put it off, as we do with most things in our car until it’s too late. We’re educated through the help of television to change our oil and lube the car to prevent major problems down the road, but what about our transmissions? Yet, it’s true a new or rebuilt transmission can run into hundreds of dollars. It may be prevented with a simple, inexpensive check-up from ALL STAR TRANSMISSION located at 454 N. 20th St. in Battle Creek, phone 962-1234. Most shops advertise that they repair transmissions in addition to many other services offered. It makes sense, like most other specialized services today that someone who builds a business on repairing and installing transmissions should and generally does understand their complex inner workings better than a general repair shop. Why take chances? ALL STAR TRANSMISSION, can supply you with a written estimate before any repairs are done and will complete the job in the shortest time possible. Don’t wait for the noises, and by all means don’t overlook the slippage. All are signs of bigger things to come. “Get it in gear” call 962-1234 and schedule an appointment with the transmission experts at ALL STAR TRANSMISSION. Let them show you just how inexpensive a little preventative maintenance may be.
