Sheriff Al Byam says goodbye after 16 years After 16 years, Al Byam will end his tenure as Calhoun County sheriff on Dec. 31. “It’s been an honor and privilege to have the trust of the citizens and to be the elected sheriff,” Byam said. Byam, 68, of Fredonia Twp. announced in March that he would not be seeking re-election for a fifth term. “I’m at the age and time in my life where I want to have more personal time with my wife and family,” Byam said. “I have hobbies I would like to pursue and some volunteer work as well.” See story on page 28
Environmentally speaking... Looking back on a good year for Marshall
LOOK BACK at
2012
Environmentally speaking, 2012 was a good year for Marshall and thanks to the combined efforts of many Marshall citizens, 2013 will usher in a greener community with cleaner rivers and parks, well managed nature areas, preserved natural resources, many new trees and more people dedicated to greening up their lives and their community. 2012 saw several projects that were initiated and facilitated by grass roots groups and funded mainly by local donations. See column on page 31
Editor’s Corner: Where did the time go? With another year drawing to a close, Editor John Hendler laments the apparent speeding up of time as the years pass by and looks forward to a new start in 2013. “Regardless of what year it is or what part of the year we are in, we should strive to always do things with the same spirit and determination that is present when we start a new year.” See column on page 3
The year that was: Sports 2012 The year in sports is recapped in four pages with more than 25 photos as a look back at sports in the Marshall area for 2012, including several district and regional team championships as well as Marshall athlete Henry Swett’s first state championship, who was the first person in three decades to win a state championship in an individual sport. See photos on pages 35-38
Local businesses say
THANK YOU to their customers!

012 was a year when we continued to reach out to each other through activities at school, church, and in the community. We said “goodbye” to friends gone too early and “hello” to friends yet-to-be. The summer’s heat broke records as did fundraising volunteers for Relay for Life. Oaklawn Hospital and Mar Lee Schools announced changes in leadership and hopes for the future. Each reader and writer has her/his TOP STORIES of 2012. We at the ad-visor&chronicle are sharing four of our selections as a way to offer a snapshot of the year that was. See page 10
