In The News: Autocam and the changing face of manufacturing
Exercise is ageless
Ask the average person their impression of manufacturing, and chances are, a noisy, dusty and dirty workplace will come to mind. That may have been the case even as recently as a decade ago, but today, manufacturing is taking on a more computerized and technological look as manufacturers try to get the word out in hopes of changing the negative perception. Manufacturers, like Autocam, located in the Brooks Industrial Park in Marshall, are also trying to get the word out that they are in desperate need of qualified workers. “One of the difficulties everyone in manufacturing has right now is finding people,” said Autocam General Manager Jeff Goodman. Police apprehend three suspects of home invasion A 25-year-old Marshall woman called 911 on Jan. 21 after three masked men broke into her home on Mulberry St. in search of drugs. One man held the woman down on the floor with a knife pressed against her face as the other two searched the home, which in the past was used to grow medical marijuana. Within two days, police were able to track down the three suspects who were located in the Homer and Albion areas. The man are now facing several criminal charges for robbery, kidnapping and electronic interference. See story on page 42

espite last Monday’s single-digit wind chills and driving snow, Marshall resident Jare Klein (page 20) was out on S. Kalamazoo Ave. for his daily run. Klein, 77, says he took up running 40 years ago and that has been the key to his good health. Marshall residents Mari Leamy, 65, left, and Kay Bossard, 91, (page 14) stay healthy by swimming their troubles away three times a week with an hour-long water aerobics routine. Word on the Street
What do you do to stay healthy? Editor’s Corner
This week’s special section “ Health, Mind & Body” focuses what to do to maintain a healthy lifestyle. We asked these six people what things they do to improving their health?
by John Hendler Most of us are familiar with the adage about postal carriers: Neither snow nor rain nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. Apparently that creed also applies to Jare Klein, even though he’s not a mailman. I knew Jare was an avid runner and had asked him the week before last if I could get a photo of him running for our Health, Mind & Body issue. He said he’d run by the office on Monday. Last Monday was preceded by Sunday night’s crazy windstorm and we woke up Monday morning to temps in the teens, wind chills near zero and bursts of heavy snow that caused numerous accidents out on the roadways. Yet, there was Jare, who will be 78 in May, running down S. Kalamazoo Ave. to our office for our photo op. Does anything slow this man down? Apparently not. What an inspiration he is, taking it to the streets every day with his can-do spirit. He says his running not only makes him better physically but also mentally, allowing him, as he says, to think things through. I have heard the same thing from others and have experienced that myself: that regular exercise can improve one’s mood and help liberate us from all that stresses us. Speaking of liberating or being free, here’s a story or two from the other end of the spectrum. I recently talked with a friend who was complaining about how much of her daily life was consumed by technology designed to make our lives more “liberating” texting, e-mail and Facebook. “It's ruining my life,” she said. “I'm just typing all day long. I hardly ever talk on the phone anymore, because nobody calls me.” A while back, I read that many people are starting to leave social networking sites just to get their lives back. One guy said he needed to take a break because he felt obligated to update his status on Facebook every hour, afraid he would disappoint people who were expecting those hourly updates. Ever hear of Dale Webster, the man who once surfed for more than 10,000 consecutive days? Since he always had to be near water, he said he was forced to take menial jobs that were compatible with his surfing. Eventually, Webster said the streak seemed more like a curse and he couldn't stop even if he wanted, often wondering what his life would be like if he had actually missed a day and not felt compelled to come out and continue his streak. With our increasingly busy lives, we seem to take on more and more, “enslaving” ourselves to the things we have chosen of our own free will. The Eagles had it right more than three decades ago in their song Already Gone: So oftentimes it happens that we live our lives in chains That we never even know we have the key Something to think about while we work on our health, mind and body. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

“I just lost 47 pounds and I workout at Oaklawn Life Improvement Center.”
“Regrettably, I’m not doing enough to support my health and well-being. I watch what I eat and monitor my portions. I recognize I could do more.”
“I just joined Weight Watchers last week and I lost six pounds.”

“A brisk walk with my dog and watching what I eat. I eat lots of vegetables and healthy snacks.”
“I try to workout two to three times a week and make better food choices than brownies.”
“Eating fruits and vegetables, drinking lots of water and walking as much as possible.”
Letters A brightening of the dark days of winter To the Editor: If you haven’t taken a trip to downtown Marshall within the past couple of weeks, you are missing the opportunity to put a smile on your face. All of the new baby trees along the side-
walks have knitted or crocheted covers on them and are so colorful in their warm blankets. You can see everything from a Bumble Bee to Sparty’s colors, a baby‘s blanket to a rainbow of primary colors, grandma’s
afghan to a barber pole. You’ll even see some owls in a tree. Thank you to all the talented people for their tree sweaters and to Donna Daines and Cheryl Vosburg for coordinating this special “coverage” and bringing to
us a different approach to art. What a great way to brighten the dark days of winter. Lois Zuehlke, Marshall
Columns Law that helps people...delegation of parental powers By GEORGE M. STRANDER Ingram County Court Administrator and Probate Register We with small children are all used to dropping our little ones off temporarily with a grandparent, aunt, uncle, friend or care provider. In doing this, we are not transferring our parental powers over our children; there is no need, since we later pick up our child after running the errand we are on, getting off work or even returning
from our weekend out of town. But what if parents are going to be gone for an extended time? How can those caring for a child over a period of months be given the authority and responsibility to make decisions (e.g., medical) for the child, but on an extended temporary basis? Power of attorney: Michigan law specifically authorizes a parent (or a court-appointed guardian) to delegate powers to another person via a “power of attorney,” which is simply a written and signed declaration of such a delegation. Any such power of attorney is valid for a maximum of six months; if care is needed for a longer time
a new power of attorney would have to be created. A parental-power-delegating power of attorney can transfer almost any power a parent or legallyappointed guardian has. However, a parent or guardian’s power to consent to the minor marrying or to consent to, or release for, the minor’s adoption cannot be transferred. Armed Forces: As expected, the use of these powers of attorney can be beneficial for parents in the military who are deployed away from family. And since deployments overseas typically extend beyond six months, state law provides for this. Hence, if a parent or guardian serving in the
Want to voice your opinion?
U.S. Armed Forces is deployed to a foreign nation, the delegation of powers in a power of attorney can (if so designated in the document) last until the 31st day after the end of the deployment. Court notification: In the case of a parent delegating powers, there is no requirement for any notification of anyone (beyond, of course, the person(s) receiving the delegation). However, if a court-appointed guardian delegates powers the court is to be notified within seven days after the power of attorney is executed. In this way the court is apprised of who actually is caring for the child.
