What do you think about no mail on Saturdays? Editor’s Corner
To offset its growing budget deficit, the United States Postal Service recently announced that it will terminate Saturday mail delivery beginning in August, although the USPS will continue to deliver packages on the weekend. What are your thoughts on USPS stopping Saturday mail delivery?
by John Hendler
Is there more to life than being happy? Viktor Frankl, the prominent psychiatrist and neurologist who survived a Nazi concentration camp and and wrote about his experience in the book, Man’s Search for Meaning, came up with one of my favorite quotes on life: It is the very pursuit of happiness that thwarts happiness. Think about it; how often have we set out to “be happy” only to find that the experience we pinned such high hopes on turned out to be less than what we expected? Frankl concluded in his book that the difference between those who lived and those who died came down to one thing: meaning. Frankl saw in the camp that those who found meaning, even in the most horrifying situations, were far more resilient to suffering than those who did not. A few weeks back in our Word on the Street, we asked people what gives their lives meaning. We raised that question in response to a Gallup poll that showed that approximately 60 percent of Americans think of themselves as “happy.” On the other hand, according to the Centers for Disease Control, at least 40 percent of Americans say they do not have a satisfying life purpose. In an article titled, There’s More To Life Than Being Happy, Emily Esfahani Smith states that research has shown that having purpose and meaning in life increases well-being and life satisfaction, improves mental and physical health, enhances resiliency, enhances self-esteem and decreases the chances of depression. She also notes, that the pursuit of happiness is ironically leaving people less happy according to recent research. An author of a recent study in the Journal of Positive Psychology has noted that “Happiness without meaning characterizes a relatively shallow, self-absorbed or even selfish life, in which things go well, needs and desire are easily satisfied and difficult or taxing entanglements are avoided.” Happiness, they found is about feeling good and being more of a “taker” rather than a “giver.” The article notes that participants in a study reported meaning from giving a part of themselves away to others and making a sacrifice. To quote psychologist Martin E.P. Seligman: You use your highest strengths and talents to belong to and serve something you believe is larger than the self. One last thing to think about: Researchers found that having negative events happen to you decreases your happiness, but increases the amount of meaning you have in life. Looks like finding meaning in one’s life is the key that just might bring us happiness. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

“If they don’t pay careful attention to their budget, they won’t have a future. I think it’s a reasonable move to cut expenses.”
“It doesn’t bother me. I won’t miss it. I’d hate to see the postal system go private.”
“I guess it will kind of throw me off not getting mail on Saturdays. I’m used to always getting something in the mail.”
Maura McCarthy, Marshall

Shannon Tobin, Chicago
“It won’t really matter to me because I do most of my business online.”
“I think it’s too bad. There are other ways to work around the budget situation. There are businesses that rely on Saturday delivery.”
“From a business standpoint it may hinder what companies do, but personally, I won’t miss it.”

Thanks goes to the men in the red truck for snow removal To the Editor: To the two men in the red truck: Early last Friday morn-

The snow was heavy and wet and removing it would have been a difficult task for me. Your efforts are
greatly appreciated. Thank you. Anita Clark, Marshall
Columns...Legally Speaking Devil in the details with the Homestead Property Tax Credit By DAVI D J . DE G R AW This is one of those “there are two kinds of people in the world” articles. There are those who, on Christmas Eve, will be in bed by midnight because when they put together their 7 year old’s present that has more pieces and parts than the IRS has rules. They did not bother to look at the instructions. Now there may be a few leftover pieces and parts, but the present works fine…we know because it was “tested” from 10 p.m. to midnight. Then there are those who will be awake an additional two or three hours because they are following the mind numbing instruction book to be sure that bolt 2447 has nut 4227 on it and has been properly affixed through part MN and not part NM. There will still be leftover parts. Well, there could be a third kind of people….those who have the elves do it for them. When preparing your state income tax return this year, it is better to be that kind of person who reads the instructions. Why? First, many people do not file for the property tax credit and are eligible for one. For example, you do not have to own a home to be eligible for the property tax credit. You may qualify just by paying rent. Second, the rules have changed and the state of
Michigan has issued new instructions. There are some new nuts and bolts and the income tax software does not always include them when it builds your return. Some of the obvious rules are: (1) be sure your homestead is located in Michigan. That sounds obvious, but credits have been denied because the home is not really in Michigan; (2) you must be a Michigan resident at least six months of the year for which you are claiming the credit. Again, this seems obvious, but if you moved to Michigan and do not have proof of residency (a Michigan driver’s license or voter registration for example), you may be denied the credit; (3) you actually occupy and own or rent the home; and (4) for 2012 your total “household resources” (a new term this year) are $50,000 or less and the taxable value of your homestead is $135,000 or less. Some of the not-so-obvious rules can also cause your credit to dwindle or disappear. While an inheritance is not taxed by the state of Michigan, it does count as income for purposes of determining the homestead credit. Nobody gives you a form that states your inheritance, you will have to do some bookkeeping. About that “new term”: Michigan no longer measures your
“household income” to determine the credit, but now measures your “household resources.” “Household resources” includes more items than “household income” and the instruction book does not list all of the things that can be considered “household resources.” There is a checklist available on the state of Michigan website for “household resources.” Finally, if you own land next to your home, check to see whether the city or township classifies it as “homestead” property. If you believe the taxes on that property are includable in determining your homestead credit, be sure the classification is correct. If you are eligible for the Michigan Homestead Property Tax Credit, this is a good year to burn a little of the midnight oil and read the instructions to make sure that everything gets used so there are no leftover pieces and parts. If you have elves, they will appreciate it too. Attention Advertisers: Offer your customers fresh ideas to improve their home, ways of creating more organized space updating both the interior and exterior to maintain the value of the property. Spring will be arriving soon, so it’s time to do those seasonal maintenance and expansion projects.
