In The News: Redhawks soar with the Fabulous 4 Respectful. Responsible. Safe. Kind. Those words, known at Hughes Elementary School as the Fabulous 4, have helped create a positive school experience for teachers and students alike. At Hughes, the Positive Behavioral Intervention Supports program, known as PBIS, seeks to teach students proper conduct by telling them what is expected of them rather than telling them what they should not be doing. “It’s truly a positive approach to dealing with behavior,” said Hughes Principal Andrea Nessel. “It’s proactive, rather than reactive, which is huge. We’re teaching behavior that we want instead of reacting to behavior that we don’t want.” See story on page 6
A local powerhouse of creativity and technology FUG Inc., located at 7950 S. Old US 27 across from Lyon Lake, specializes in custom screenprinting, embroidery and vinyl printing services, “Everything except letterhead, envelopes and business cards,” said CEO Don Kujawa. The company, which was formed in August 2011, moved into its current location in January 2012 after purchasing the equipment of Graphic Embroidery, which included seven embroidery heads. It now also has a high speed, 10-head, eight-color screenprinter from Portugal. See story on page 20
City Council approves sign ordinance changes The Marshall City Council held a public hearing on Feb. 4, with no public comment, for proposed changes to the sign ordinance. “The ordinance said that dilapidated or unsafe signs were prohibited, but there was nothing that governs the maintenance, so they wanted to apply that in the ordinance,” said Director of Community Services Natalie Huestis. The council approved the changes unanimously. At the meeting, the council also set a public hearing for March 4 for the Oaklawn Hospital Overlay District ordinance and filled numerous vacancies on Marshall boards. See story on page 14

Forks Senior Center announces upcoming trips Since Forks Senior Center in Albion first organized eight years ago, trips have always been a popular feature on the monthly calendar. This year's trip schedule planned through October offers a wide variety of interesting destinations. The local trips provide travel in the company of friends and safety within a group. Micki Ogilbee, FSC Vice president, coordinated the calendar with a committee, and notes that “our goal is to provide trips that appeal to all interests, while keeping the costs affordable.” See story on page 47

ohn and Margaret Taylor have a love that they say cannot be measured. The Taylors, both 72, of Marengo Twp. have been married for 53 years. Not only has their marriage survived the test of time, but also a recent scare. In September, when they learned that John needed open heart surgery, Margaret said, “All I could think of is, ‘What am I going to do without him?’ It makes you realize not to take love for granted.” Read the couple’s love story on page 32

Editor’s Corner by John Hendler
Loafing on the job I saw a segment on the Today Show last week that dealt with cyber-loafing or cyber-slacking, the practice of being online at work for non-work purposes. A new study reports that most of us spend more than half our time at work and in some cases, as much as 80 percent of our time at work looking at things that have nothing to do with our jobs. You know who you are. You know how easy it is to take an at-work detour: You go to retrieve that important e-mail message, but first you’re just going to take a “quick break” to check your Facebook, just in case anything important has been posted, like photos of the sunrise, photos of cats wearing hats or photos of dogs walking on logs. Or you check out the postings about recipes, your friend’s kid’s “funny” story at dinner or someone waxing poetic about the years passing them by: Life is good, but it’s just not what I dreamed it would be. Now, you’re kind of bummed out and you look at the clock as that quick break has turned into 90 minutes. No way you can get to work after reading that sad post about your friend’s life not turning out the way he dreamed it would be, so you give yourself a few minutes to perk up by playing Words With Friends, Song Pop or Slot-O-Mania. You tell yourself that, absolutely, positively, you will get back to work just after you chill for a few minutes. And after you check the weather forecast. You notice it’s going to snow and just for fun, you check the weather in the Bahamas and start wondering how much it would cost to get away for a long weekend to beat the winter blues. Finally, at around 11 o’clock and some two hours later, you are finally ready to get to work. That is, until a co-worker asks if you want to take an early lunch. After the morning you’ve had, how can you refuse? Apparently this so-called study has a “cure” to solve this scourge in the workplace that is known as cyber-slacking. And I will find out what this cure is, just after I check on the weather in Kathmandu and check the cricket scores from Australia. Five minutes, that’s all. Okay, 10 minutes, but that’s it. Promise. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

“Love is family. For Valentine’s Day, I’m going to ask my step-mom to make cupcakes for my class.”
“I think it means you have to get along with all your friends and caring for them. For Valentine’s Day, we usually get gifts at my house and Valentine’s stuffed animals.”

Blood drive at Marshall High School was a success To the Editor: A huge thanks goes to the students and staff at Marshall High School who participated in the American Red Cross blood drive held on Jan. 29. Fifty-six
donors provided 34 productive units. The blood drive was in honor of Andrew Shippell, a freshman at MHS, who was recently diagnosed with acute lymphoblstic leukemia.
Another blood drive will be held Tuesday, Feb. 19 sponsored by Oaklawn Hospital and held in the large classroom on the third floor of the Wright Medical Building, 215 E. Mansion
St. in Marshall. Gloria Briggs, Oaklawn Hospital Auxiliary Bloodmobile Chair
Medicare/Medicaid Assistance steps up counseling service To the Editor: Due to a recent investigation by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office regarding identity theft and mail fraud, we at Michigan Medicare/Medicaid Assis-
tance will be stepping up our counseling service to include this kind of fraud for beneficiaries and their families. If you think you may have been a victim, contact
the Sheriff’s Department at 269-781-0880 or your local police department and the Michigan Office of Internal Revenue Service. For further information, call 800-803-7174.

2013 sesquicentennial salutes to unionism, liberty To the Editor: Marshall area residents are invited to observe unique sesquicentennial of liberty and unionism – the formation of America’s nationwide and the emancipation proclamation by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863 that resulted in the abolition of chattel slavery. Visits to the railroad workers union monument at E. Michigan Ave. and Mansion
St. within the “Triangle Green” along with the homestead monument of Adam Crosswhite who figured prominently in the abolitionists’ fugitive slave rescue in Marshall can be both informative and inspiring in these days of lingering racial animosity and denigration of labor unionism. The struggle for equality of multiple ethnicities and dignity regardless of gender

and class in the workforce remain as challenges. Civil War military installation may also be a reminder of the enormous cost paid in blood and treasure that forgotten millions bore in advance cherished values of freedom, equality and dignity. In the months ahead, perhaps the diverse Calhoun County area from Marshall to Battle Creek to Albion
can come together at events during the sesquicentennial to honor and celebrate a nobler heritage that is identified with historic Marshall – City of Hospitality, not hostility. “With charity for all and malice toward none” we can await realization in these bitter times of despair and hope. Marshall teen Brady Brisson earns ball from pro bowler AYSO spring By JOHN HENDLER News Editor It’s not often that a teenager gets to play alongside one of their sports idols but for Brady Brisson, 14, and an eighth grader at Marshall Middle School, he recently had the opportunity to
meet professional bowlers Rhino Page, Wes Mallot and Pete Weber at the Thunder Bowl in Allen Park, Mich. It was during a special event that Brady, an avid bowler with a 170 average (high game 263), had the opportunity to bowl with Page. “While we were bowling,
Brady, with professional bowler Rhino Page and the ball Brady earned after rolling four strikes in a row.
Rhino said to me that if I was ever going to get to bowl on TV like the pros do, then I’d have to be able to handle the pressure,” said Brady. “He said to me, ‘I’ll tell you what, if you strike out, I’ll give you a bowling ball.’” Brady admitted he was “really nervous and started sweating.” Some would say he handled the pressure like a pro, as he rolled four strikes in a row to close out the game. Page, true to his word, presented Brady with an autographed $200 Storm Lucid ball. Brady says the ball, a 15 pounder, is a bit too heavy to use at the moment but he says he plans to use it one day. Brady is part of the middle school bowling league in Marshall and also bowls with a team in Battle Creek and hopes to be a high school state champion one day. Brady takes part in the North Pointe Junior Gold Championships, which is an annual national tournament
for the top male and female youth bowlers in the United States. The tournament awards $250,000 in scholarships and youth bowlers also have the opportunity to earn a spot on Junior Team USA. Junior Gold qualifying events are held throughout the country and one must be a Junior Gold member to qualify for the national tour-
nament. To be a Junior Gold member, athletes must be a USBC Standard Youth member and purchase a Junior Gold membership prior to participating in Junior Gold qualifying tournaments. Brady will be bowling a qualifier in Grand Rapids Feb. 17.
