In The News: MPS superintendent proposes three-year transition plan for elementaries At the May 6 Marshall Public Schools Board of Education workshop, Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis presented the board with his recommendation on reconfiguring the district’s three elementary schools over the next three years. Davis proposed a three-year plan of transition beginning this fall with all the elementaries remaining K-5 with a reduction of five classrooms at Walters Elementary. See story on page 10
City Council finds petition to be sufficient The Marshall City Council received a report on May 6 from City Clerk Trisha Nelson that the petition filed April 29 regarding the Oaklawn Hospital Campus Overlay District was found to be sufficient. The council took no action at the meeting regarding the request to rescind the HCOD, but said the topic would be discussed at the next meeting on May 20. Councilwoman Kathy Miller said she will not be voting to rescind the HCOD because she feels it should go to a vote of the people to “bring closure to this emotional and controversial issue.” See story on page 14

What’s your favorite memory of your mother? Mother’s Day is May 12. Looking back over the many years with your mother, what is your favorite memory of your mom?
Editor’s Corner by John Hendler With Mother’s Day this weekend, it occurred to me the other day that I have rarely written about my mother in my column. Over the past six years, I made mention of my father on several occasions, but nary a word on my mother, who passed away in 1996. As a kid growing up, I was a relatively good kid, staying mostly out of trouble, but still being a bit of a pain in the you-know-what to my mother. My mother was a stay-at-home mom in the most literal sense: She didn’t work outside the home and also never learned to drive. We were a one-income, one-driver family, and with my dad being a salesman and being on the road 12 hours a day, my mom was always home. She was always there, and I never had the chance to tell her how much I appreciated all that she did for me and my sister. I take that back - I had the chance to tell her, many chances, but I never did. Not because I didn’t think it or feel it, but because expressing one’s feelings or showing emotion was something that we just didn’t do in our house; everything was just implied. Despite the numerous mistakes I have made in my life, I have few regrets, but my biggest regret is not getting out of my comfort zone years ago and letting my mom know how much I appreciated all that she did for me and that I loved her. When I was a kid and causing my mother grief, she would always invoke that old standby line used by mothers and fathers since the beginning of time: Wait until you have kids of your own. It is a mantra I have used countless times on my kids. Of course, to them, the words ring hollow, because, well, they’re just kids and won’t fully appreciate all I’ve done for them until they have their own kids. The circle of life. When my mom died, I had only been a parent for nine months, so I was just starting to get a sense of what she and my father went through when I came along. I often imagine that had she lived longer, I would have shared my feelings with my mother. Instead, and as a tribute to her, I tell my kids how much I love them every day, and sometimes, my kids actually share how they feel about me, which at least means they’ll have one less thing to regret when they are adults and parents themselves. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

“I credit my love of singing and music to my mother. My first memory is singing in the bathtub with my mom.”
“I have the utmost respect for my mom. I talk to her all the time. I am one of five, and we all turned out okay. I have three girls, and it’s hard in an activity-driven world to be a parent. I don’t know how she did it,”
“She still to this day saves everything I’ve I ever done - photos, newspaper clippings, awards. I didn’t see any importance, but they are special to her.”
Sue Woodliff, Homer
Teresa Hoag, Battle Creek
Tony Solitro, Lansing
“When I was in high school, my dad would go deer hunting, and my mother and I would eat out every evening, something we normally wouldn’t do.”
“I respect her having seven children and staying connected in all our lives. She’s been married 59 years and that says a lot. She taught me how to love and how be a great spouse and mother.”
“It’s her continued, perpetual efforts to make me successful. I think I owe part of my GPA to her.”

Thanks to the Fountain Clinic of Marshall To the Editor: My co-workers and I want to express deep appreciation to Marshall’s Fountain Clinic for its role in helping to improve and save lives. March was Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and this was the fifth year the clinic and Oaklawn Hospital worked together to provide free colonoscopies to underinsured Calhoun County residents. Based on referrals from the clinic, our endoscopy nurses and certified registered nurse anesthetists collaborated with
Drs. Mahesh Karamchandani, Freda Arlow, Guy Power, Andrew Gordon, Caron Warnsby and Thomas Casale, as well as with other hospital departments, to provide 12 people colonoscopies with no out-ofpocket costs. Four patients were found to have pre-cancerous polyps that were successfully removed. That means four people in our community have a better quality of life because of this project. All of the physicians donated their services to help
bring attention to this effective way of reducing colon cancer, and the hospital provided the staff, facility and supplies required to make this happen. We all know how expensive health care is, but I am gratified thinking of these patients who may well have avoided colon cancer, the associated surgery and costly treatment some years from now. Colon cancer is the No. 3 leading cancer in men and women, but it’s easily cured and treated. Early detection is necessary for that to happen,
however. With the advances in sedation, patients find there is no discomfort or memory of the exam. It’s impossible to overemphasize how important this life-saving procedure can be. Our thanks go to all who supported this effort and shared our vision. Nan Brown, Clinical Nurse Director, Endoscopy Department Oaklawn Hospital
City Council should lead community to compromise To the Editor: Shame on Eric Ebner (in his May 4 letter) and others who are laying the burden of the Oaklawn Hospital zoning plan on the shoulders of the Marshall Neighborhood Association. The MNA is a group of Oaklawn Hospital’s unfortunate neighbors who have been “manipulated” for three years into thinking that they would have valid input into the plans Oaklawn Hospital has plotted for the future of our historic district (including the Franke Center for the Arts and the American Museum of Magic). The honorable, respectable, tax-paying owners of gracious and historic homes and businesses who formed the MNA are entitled to use all legal means to protect their businesses, homes, property values and the integrity of their neighborhood/our historic district. How can any of us berate the MNA for attempting to prevent a takeover from a land-grabbing Goliath and city government that has not been transparent with the MNA or the community? Our civil justice system is for everyone; this system is how we deal rationally with conflicts that cannot be settled amicably. Eric Ebner, your letter attempted to put fear into residents by claiming that litigation costs of “$100,000 or more” to fight the MNA would eliminate city services. This
suggests that using the civil and legal rights entitled to all of us should not be utilized. Please remember that Oaklawn Hospital started the whole issue at hand by attempting to claim zoning rights to the residential and commercial blocks around it with no clear explanation of how the new zoning would be implemented. If a plan is in place, sharing it with the community now might make it very clear as to whether the residents of Marshall approve of this new zoning and subsequent changes to the immediate area. With no specific information, the zoning plan is carte blanche for a frightening scenario of 55-feet high additions to the hospital, various parking areas, and commercial enterprises in a previously residential area. There will be no litigation costs to the city, if the City Council negates the ordinance of April 1, or if the Oaklawn CEO would withdraw this zoning plan, the litigation would be avoided. It is possible for Oaklawn and the City Council to see reason and to back down. Think about the previous sentence. It is possible to see reason, and what a great public relations coup that would be for the new CEO. If there are no great plans to dominate the area around the hospital, what is there to be lost? Oaklawn Hospital is a nice-sized hospital. It is possible to get around in it fairly
easily, and it has many services. It could use a small parking area near the emergency entrance. Why does Oaklawn have to keep enlarging to compete with the hospital in Battle Creek? It isn’t necessary to have a metropolitan hospital in our small town. One thousand employees is wonderful. Does it have to have 200 beds and 2,000 employees to make the Oaklawn’s administrators happy? David is standing up to Goliath. If the City Council would sincerely listen to all residents and taxpayers equally and not be made fearful by the economic and political power of the Oaklawn administrators, perhaps Marshall can maintain its historical and moral integrity. I didn’t move here for the greatness or size of the hospital, and I doubt very much if others did either. We have excellent hospitals north, west, and east. I would simply like to see the City Council lead our community to compromise and peace and approve a small, historically-attractive parking area for emergency visitors, period. Can we not agree that this is really a tempest in a teapot and settle for some compromise from everyone? Remember the Redskins? Chris Wettle, Marshall

AYSO registration for fall is May 15 Marshall AYSO Soccer will be hosting registration for the fall 2013/spring 2014 season on Wednesday, May 15 from 5-8 p.m. at Marshall High School. This registration is open to anyone ages 4-19 and will register the player for an entire year of soccer. Marshall AYSO offers trained coaches and referees and every player will receive a full uniform including jersey, shorts and socks. Marshall AYSO is quite possibly the best value in youth sports. Full details including
fees and how to register can be found online at MarshallAYSO.org under registration. As an all-volunteer organization, all parents must register as a volunteer for at least one hour of service over the course of the year. Players and parents must register online and bring their printed forms to registration or may use the computers provided on site. This is the only in person registration for the fall season. Registration payment must be in the form of cash or check. In addition, the first 50
players and volunteers who register will receive a free drawstring bag and water bottle. Representatives from the Chicago Fire Soccer Camps will be on site as well to answer questions, provide giveaways and can also register you for the camp that Marshall AYSO will be hosting in July. For full details on registration and for summer camp information visit MarshallAYSO.org or email registrar@marshallayso.org.
