In The News: Albion Board of Education votes to close high school Albion Public Schools made a “courageous” decision to save its community-centered school, while offering through a regional partnership the best education possible for their high school students, noted Albion Public Schools Superintendent Jerri-Lynn Williams-Harper and Marshall Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis. On May 14, the Albion Board of Education considered options on how to restructure its K-12 model that would be affordable and of high quality. After deciding on a K-8 model, the Albion district extended an invitation for Marshall Public Schools to enter into a cooperative agreement to serve the Albion community as their new high school destination. Marshall Public Schools will hold a community forum on the matter on May 22 at 6 p.m. in the Marshall Middle School Auditorium. See story on page 6

Former State Farm property threatened by foreclosure The former State Farm property on East Dr. in Marshall went into foreclosure April 2 by the Calhoun County Treasurer’s Office due to delinquent taxes. The County Treasurer’s Office is now working with a receiver out of New Mexico to determine the future of the building. “We foreclosed on the property for non-payment of (the 2010) real estate property taxes,” Calhoun County Treasurer Christine Schauer said, adding that the title and escrow companies who own the building, Golden Rule, LLC and Willis Asset Management, LLC of New Mexico, have also been delinquent on their taxes for 2011 and 2012. A court in New Mexico will determine if the property will remain as an asset of Golden Rule, LLC, or if it will revert to the county for foreclosure. See story on page 14
Veterans Roundtable held at Marshall High School A Veterans Roundtable was held May 15 in the Marshall High School Media Center at which Marshall residents who fought in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan spoke to small groups about their military experience. Each group of 12 students and one or two veterans spent 20-25 minutes together discussing veterans’ responses to the questions which had been submitted earlier by the students. See story on page 40

Marshall’s Michigan Week is May 16-22. Events include the Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, the Manufacturers Luncheon, Education Day, Tourism/Hospitality Day, Heritage Day and much more. We asked these six people what they love about Marshall and Michigan.
by John Hendler The education landscape in Marshall will be undergoing some rather significant changes in the coming months and over the next few years. For the past few weeks, we have reported on the reconfiguration of Marshall Public Schools’ three elementary schools, culminating in a three-year transition plan that will put the elementaries in a two-tiered model beginning with the 2015-16 school year. About a month ago, the ad-visor&chronicle ran a piece by MPS Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis on the possibility that Albion Public Schools would close its high school for budgetary reasons and become a K-8 district with Marshall High School and the Marshall Alternative High School becoming the destination for high school students from Albion. On May 14, the Albion Board of Education voted to close Albion High School and invited Marshall to consider being the destination of Albion’s high school students. MPS will hold a community forum on Wednesday, May 22 at 6 p.m. at the Marshall Middle School Auditorium to hear what local citizens have to say about the matter. The Battle Creek Enquirer ’s May 16 headline, Race an issue for Albion, Marshall left a bad taste in my mouth. Are we back in the 60s and 70s? Are expectations for this cooperative so low already? I’m sure there are some people out there in both communities that are close-minded about the coming changes and are expecting everything to fall apart. But, I believe that we must follow the lead of our school leaders and expect the best for our young people. Isn’t that what we, as parents, also hope for when it comes to our kids? In this issue, Davis and Albion Superintendent JerriLynn Williams-Harper indicated that this matter is a winwin for both school districts and that they are asking our government leaders to set aside funds to support professional development for teachers and administrators outside of existing contract expectations on differentiated instruction, curriculum diagnostics and working with diversity in developing better understanding. Also, preliminary planning has been put forth in organizing a Youth Summit in the summer for high schoolaged student leaders from both communities to develop a shared vision of what our schools could become in this new cooperative. The piece concluded by stating that this potential collaboration and partnership between Albion and Marshall could create a “diverse educational environment” for students from both communities to learn and grow. I believe this can only help better prepare our kids for life in the real world, where they will meet and interact with people from all walks of life whether they go to college or into the workforce. We need to stay positive and optimistic and expect the best of our young people; that way, great things can happen - for them and for us. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Re-think the elementary school three-year transition To the Editor: I have attended almost every Marshall Public Schools Board of Education meeting since the elementary reconfiguration was first mentioned. Unfortunately, I missed the most recent on May 6 where Dr. Randy Davis gave his recommendations to the Board. As a concerned parent of a current Marshall elementary student (and another scheduled to start kindergarten in 2015), I have several comments and concerns with the proposed three-year plan of transition. I understand that there are serious budget issues in our school district, as well as
many others. Although I’m not happy that teachers may be losing their jobs and class sizes will be increasing, I understand the need to make that change. What I don’t understand are Phases 2 and 3 of the proposed transition. I don’t understand how reorganizing the grades in the current three elementary schools will save any money. I foresee a community of upset parents and children with all the chaos and cost of changing the current configuration. Additionally, there will be a transportation nightmare for those families with multiple children attending differ-
ent elementary schools. Why spend $50,000 plus to move around all the classrooms, materials, furniture, etc? Why move the Shamrock Center to Walters when it was recently redesigned specifically for the Gordon Elementary site? I simply don’t comprehend spending a significant amount of money in order to possibly save money. And if the decline in enrollment continues, the longterm plan seems to favor closing one of the three buildings. How does a twotiered model work when and if that happens? Will students again have to be shuf-
fled around? I agree budget cuts are necessary. However, please re-think the three-year proposed plan and focus on our young children and their best interests. When I think of my current first grader and how she loves her school, her teachers and friends...I can’t imagine her having to change to a whole new building, with new teachers, administrators and support staff and possibly without some of her close friends as well. Hello soccer players, soccer fans and loved ones of Max Buzzell. In June 2012, my best friend, Max Buzzell, lost his life to an unfortunate accident at the young age of 20. Max and I played soccer together for many years; we played for the Marshall Travel Team and then, The Kingdom soccer club in Kalamazoo and then onto the Marshall High School team, graduating in 2010. Max was a true team player, and a great friend to many. Several of you may know his family; father John, mother Helen and older sister Morgan. They are one of the remarkable families I have had the privilege of knowing and being a part of and so I would like to pay tribute to Max by honoring him with a soccer tournament. This tournament is a nonprofit fundraiser that will raise money to start a scholarship in Max’s name, in which Helen will be initiating. We also will
be donating money to the Marshall Verona soccer fields. On June 8-9, we are holding the Crazy Legs Soccer Tournament, a 3v3 soccer tournament, at Marshall Verona Soccer fields. This is an open soccer tournament for all skill levels from ages U6 to adults. Fees are $120.00 per team for U6-U7 and $180.00 for U8-adults. Teams consist of at least 6 players per team and games are 2 - twelve minute halves. This is a fast paced game that will focus on building team skills, communication, passing and of course shooting! Boys/Men will be playing on June 8th and Girls/Women will be playing on June 9th. For registration and tournament rules please contact us by email. Deadline for registration is May 30 but we will accept teams up to registration on Friday June 7 if space is available. We are selling shirts to players and fans to assist with this tournament/scholarship that can be ordered before the tournament or purchased the
weekend of the tournament. The shirts are $12 and come in red with yellow writing and blue with white writing. To place an order before the tournament, contact us by email, the shirts can be seen on our Facebook page; Crazylegssoccer. This will be a fun soccer weekend as we are planning for other soccer activities and games. So please get a team for fun, or for competition to remember a great friend. Max had several friends and also had a love of sailing so if your skills are not on the soccer field and you would like to help with the tournament, we are glad to have you as a volunteer or if you would like to sponsor to help with costs of supplies for the tournament or towards the scholarship please contact us by our email. Corey Dexter received All-American honors with his fifth place finish at the NUWAY (National United Wrestling Association for Youth) National Championships held at the Kellogg Arena in Battle Creek on April 14. Corey, an eighth grader, finished his MYWAY (Michigan Youth Wrestling Association for Youth) and middle school season with a combined record of 47 wins (41 pins) and 12 loses. Corey is trained by Juaquin Sanchez and wrestles for the Marshall Wrestling Club/MYWAY program for pre-K through 12th grade under the direction of Matt Picketts

Marshall High School senior swimmers Gabby Graves, Stuart Murch and Mack Preston were named Academic All Americans for the 2012-13 school year. To be honored, these student-athletes must have a minimum GPA of 3.75. Including these three swimmers, Marshall now has 70 Academic All American divers and swimmers over the years. The Marshall High School girls soccer program raised over $800 during their 6th annual Kick For A Cure cancer fund raiser this spring and donated the money to Andrew Shippell’s family as Andrew is currently undergoing treatment for leukemia.
