In The News: Mood upbeat as MPS Board, community discuss Albion students coming to Marshall High School
Sun, shade and return summer to
Approximately 100 people attended the May 22 community forum at Marshall Middle School concerning Albion High School students attending Marshall High School and the Marshall Alternative High School beginning with the 2013-14 school year. On May 14, the Albion Public Schools Board of Education voted to close Albion High School due to budgetary issues and approached Marshall Public Schools as becoming the designated destination for Albion High School students. City Council rescinds HCOD, tables vacating of Prospect St. At its May 20 meeting, the Marshall City Council unanimously voted to rescind the Oaklawn Hospital Campus Overlay District and send it back to the Marshall Planning Commission for a public hearing due to a “defect” in a public notice. Mayor Jim Dyer challenged the Marshall Neighborhood Association to bring an alternative plan to the proposed HCOD to council at a public hearing in June. The council also tabled a decision on the vacating of E. Prospect St. so city staff and Oaklawn officials can review other options. See story on page 14
MPS Board moves forward with year one of elementary change At its May 20 business session, the Marshall Public Schools Board of Education voted to implement the first year of its three-year elementary school transition plan that will ultimately turn Walters Elementary into a K-2 school with Gordon Elementary and Hughes Elementary going to a 3-5 model beginning in the fall of 2015. The first year of the plan will keep all elementary schools K-5, but in order to balance out classroom populations at all three elementary schools, some 50-60 students will be reassigned from Walters to attend either Gordon or Hughes. City Council passes FY 2014 budget; includes tax increase Last year at this time, the Marshall City Council anticipated it could have a $714,174 budget shortfall for 2014, but Monday night, the council passed a balanced budget without any staff reductions or service cuts. This year to balance the estimated $29 million budget, the council used $4,006 from the general fund reserve and chose to levy up to 1.7 mils to increase general fund millage for $330,610 of additional revenue to support the debt service payment for the Regional Law Enforcement Building and Fire Station/City Hall renovation project. This increase would be $85 per year for a $100,000 home. See story on page 19

Word on the Street What does Memorial Day mean to you?
The meaning of Memorial Day
As the nation honors its fallen heroes on Memorial Day, May 27, we asked these six people what the holiday means to them.
Editor’s Note: This column originally ran in 2010 from then VFW Commander-in-Chief Thomas J. Tradewell Sr. Its message is just as poignant today.
It’s a sacred day to all war veterans: none need to be reminded of the reason that Memorial Day must be commemorated. But what about the general public, and more important, future generations? Do most non-veterans really recognize the importance of the day honoring their fellow Americans killed in war? Judging from what Memorial Day has become— simply another day off from work—the answer is a resounding no. Perhaps a reminder is due, then. And it is the duty of each and every veteran to relay the message. Sacrifice is meaningless without remembrance. America’s collective consciousness demands that all citizens recall and be aware of the deaths of their fellow countrymen during wartime. Far too often, the nation as a whole takes for granted the freedoms all Americans enjoy. Those freedoms were paid for with the lives of others few of us actually knew. That’s why they are all collectively remembered on one special day. This should be regarded as a civic obligation. For this is a national debt that can only be truly repaid by individual Americans. By honoring the nation’s war dead, we preserve their memory and thus their service and sacrifice in the memories of future generations. They came from all walks of life and regions of the country. But they all had one thing in common—love of and loyalty to country. This bond cemented ties between them in times of trials, allowing a diverse lot of Americans to achieve monumental ends. We remember the loss of loved ones, a sense of loss that takes group form. In essence, America is commemorating those who made the greatest sacrifice possible—giving one’s own life on behalf of others. Means of paying tribute vary. Pausing for a few moments of personal silence is available to everyone. Attending commemorative ceremonies is the most visible way of demonstrating remembrance: placing flags at gravesites, marching in parades, sponsoring patriotic programs, dedicating memorials and wearing Buddy Poppies are examples. Whether done individually or collectively, it is the thought that counts. Personal as well as public acts of remembering are the ideal. Public displays of patriotism are essential if the notion of remembering war dead is to be instilled in youth. As America’s older war veterans fast disappear from society’s landscape, there are fewer and fewer standard-bearers left to carry the torch of remembrance. Such traditions will live on only if there is a vibrant movement to which that torch can be passed.
Jeff Scott, Marshall
Howie Singer, Lansing
Katy Jay, Lansing
"To remember friends and family that have passed away. We go to their graves every year and plant flowers and have a family get-together, cook, have a good time.”
"It’s a day to honor all fellow Americans. We all contribute to society in some way.”
"I’m Canadian, so not much. But if I was American, it would be a day to say thank you to the veterans.”
Dave Lawrence, Horton
Rob Winkler, Juno Beach, Fla.
Rolene Amsler, Marshall
"Two things: it is the official kick off to summer and it’s a day to think of my grandfather who served in World War II. We used to spend the day with him. He’s gone now, but I still think about him on Memorial Day.”
"Sacrifice by million of previous veterans since 1776 so we can enjoy the life we live today.”
"Because of being in the military, for me, it’s a day of getting military people together for camaraderie and patriotism. And it’s about remembering and showing respect for our fallen soldiers.”

We have a great opportunity before us today
To the Editor: The Battle Creek Enquirer’s May 16 headline “Race an issue for Albion, Marshall” regarding the outcome of the Albion School Board’s decision to close their high school and send the students to Marshall High School was offensive to me as a citizen of Marshall. It painted a picture that was negative to what these people are trying to do. I do understand that this will be a challenge for parents and students of both communities, but it is also a great opportunity that is before us today. It will require two things from all of us:
the desire and the will. The desire, surely, is there. Can we summon the will? Both Albion and Marshall parents must summon the will themselves to getting this done. It may be difficult in the beginning, but the future for all students could be a bright one if everyone is sensitive to the needs of these young people. The two communities may be different, but they also are the same in wanting a quality education for their children. Negative, one-sided articles by the media will only sensationalize the challenge at hand. I, for one, feel that the press should report unbiased, fac-
tual news, not try to make it. There are positive things going on with all of the students and their respective towns. It’s also a shame to see adults “shooting from the hip” with negative remarks. Remember, these students did not cause the dollars to dwindle away from the school district. Times are different now and school districts are finding themselves with severe financial problems. Positive dialogue is needed on both sides. Let it begin. Remember, these students are our future and we must promise them the best education for a suc-
cessful life. Do the citizens, parents, teachers, students and administrators have the strength of will to change the perceptions that exist? Remember, you cannot change the past, but you can learn the lessons of the past and dedicate yourselves to perfecting the future for all students. I commend both Albion and Marshall school boards with making a hard decision and know that they will work together for the best outcome for all students. Kathy Miller, Marshall
Marshall High School thanks veterans for sharing To the Editor: On behalf of the Social Studies Department at Marshall High School, I would like to take this time to thank all of the veterans that participated in our 1st Annual Veterans Roundtable. The experiences that our students received are ones that they will remember for a lifetime.
From the bottom of my heart, I express my gratitude and appreciation to the veterans and their service to our country, the Marshall community and the students of Marshall High School. I would also like to thank Wilber Breseman of the Marcellus VFW Post #4054 for donating artifacts

from their war memorial museum for our display and to Cornwell’s Turkeyville for donating lunch to our veterans. Christine L. Davis, Social Studies Teacher and Department Chair

Kitana Espinoza wins 200, long jump at regional; qualifies for state Freshman sets school records in both events Marshall High School freshman Kitana Espinoza came into the May 17 regional meet as the number two seed in the long jump and eighth seed in the 100 meters and 200 meters. According to Marshall High School girls track and field coach Steve Wissink, Espinoza hadn't been at her best all season, nursing a sore hamstring. She started her day with the long jump, where she needed a top two finish or a jump of 16' 1" to qualify for state. She jumped 16' 4" on her first jump to qualify, and 16' 7 1/2" on her last to set the school record (previously 16' 7") to win the event. After taking her first jump she checked out to run her 100 meter preliminary race. “Unfortunately she twitched just prior to the gun and was disqualified for false starting,” said Wissink. “She was very upset and frustrated, but showed a lot of heart and maturity by not letting this effect her performances. I think she would have won this event also if given the
chance.” Espinoza breezed through her 200 meter preliminary and semifinal races, winning easily. When the 200 meter final gun went off, she blasted out of the blocks and “destroyed” the field, winning by .2 seconds. Her time of 26.53 seconds converts to a 26.13 hand timed, both eclipsing the previous record of 26.6. "Kitana had what has to be one of the best days in Marshall High School track and field history,” said Wissink. “She felt healthy for the first time all season, and it certainly showed. Coach (Bill) Dryer had her excellently prepared for the long jump, and we anticipate even better jumping at the State finals. I also think her 200 time can drop, as she hasn't been able to run too many due to injury. She has the ninth-fastest time going into the finals, but I think the top eight is very with reach, and that would make her All-State. We really look forward to coaching this young lady for the next three years."
