Word on the Street What makes hunting season special? Today, Nov. 15, marks the start of the 2014 firearm deer hunting season. Hundreds of Michigan hunters have been looking forward to this annual ritual.

Editor’s Corner by John Hendler Last week, it was revealed that one of Obamacare’s architects, Jonathan Gruber, had said in a video last year that lack of transparency was a major part of getting Obamacare passed because of “the stupidity of the American voter,” Also revealed last week was a video from 2012 where Gruber discussed the law’s “Cadillac Tax” which mandates that insurance companies be taxed rather than policy holders. He said taxing individuals would have been “politically impossible” but taxing companies (who would then pass the costs on to consumers) worked “because the American people are too stupid to understand the difference.” Rather than be incensed, I can see some truth in Gruber’s comments. In an era where more people are concerned about Kim Kardashian or Honey Boo Boo or Facebook or Twitter or their smartphone, there are fewer of us out there aware of what is going on, and sadder still, there are those who don’t care what is going on as long as they get theirs. In this case, it was free health coverage, a symptom of our want more “free”-dom from the government. Does more free stuff from the government or the promise of free stuff really make us free? Barack Obama got re-elected by saying that he was going to give us this, this and this. And when people didn't get this, this and this, no longer was he popular and we see how the midterm elections turned out. What it all comes down to is this: government is a reflection of the people that go to the polls. The reason we have the society we have today is based on the people of the United States, not the government. We have the government that we have chosen. We have the president that we have chosen. We have the economy that we have chosen. The problem is not the politicians; it's the people who vote them in. I believe that the American public should get what they vote in. Politicians make careers out of their office because the same people vote them in. It's the ideology, not the person. In Ancient Rome, the poet Juvenal used the phrase panem et circenses, Bread and Circuses, to decry the selfishness of citizens and their disregard for important issues. The leaders of that time figured if they gave the people things to keep them entertained and distracted, they wouldn’t care about the important issues and decisions being made for them. Sadly, much like today. Until next week may the good news be yours.

"I love being outside, sitting quietly and watching what Mother Nature wants to show me. Maybe, the gift of taking an animal.”

"When I used to hunt, I enjoyed the solitude of sitting in the woods, watching the wildlife and waiting for the chance to get that big buck.”

"I get to be with my two sons. We’ve been going hunting together for 25 years. We get together to reminisce and have a good time.”

Ralph Miller, Marshall

Bill Andrews, Olivet

Randy Davis, Marshall

"I like the camaraderie, being with friends and being outside. I love the outdoors, especially early in the morning. It’s a chance to get away from it all.”

"What makes hunting season special is the camaraderie and brotherhood with family and friends. It’s a time to enjoy the outdoors and the beautiful landscape.”

"I love getting out in nature and the solitude. I like being able to think.”

Letters

Thanks to community for supporting local veterans To the Editor: Thank you everyone very much for the large number of people attending the Veterans Day Service at the fountain. It shows the support the peo-

ple of Marshall have always given veterans in the past and now the present. It was very good to see several classes of young children at the service. True, they

do not yet understand all the meanings, but it’s an important beginning. Thanks to the teachers for bringing the classes to the service. This support means a great deal to

veterans who have served their country and their families. Ken Reddick, Korean veteran, Marshall

Marshall’s next mayor says ‘thank you’ to voters To the Editor: I would like to say “Thank You” to everyone that came out and voted on Nov. 4. More than 50 percent of the registered voters came out despite the drizzling weather. That shows a community that cares, a community that is involved, a community that unites when asked to step up and make a difference. I would like to especially thank the 1,641 citizens that chose to support me with their vote. When running unopposed you realize that the citizens do not have to check your box, but to see so many that took the time to show their confidence. I am humbled. I would like to acknowledge all the many people that

helped run the polls on Election Day. Without those individuals we would not have the opportunity to exercise our freedom to vote. We will have some new faces on the Marshall City Council come January, along with the remaining Council we have been fortunate to work together for years. We all welcome Joe Caron and Kari Schurig. I am ready with excitement to pull my team together and continue the forward thinking progress I have come to know. The Council is comprised of six, soon to be seven citizens, that are all very passionate about Marshall. Our hometown has so much to offer, each and every one of us have chosen to live here for one reason or an-

other. It means a great deal to all of us for different reasons. That passion is what makes Marshall so special, the citizens always come forth as a community to help those around us. I would also like to take this time to thank council members Dave Revore and Jody Mankerian for their years of service on the Council. They have made a difference and I hope they will continue to work in one capacity or another for the city. Their experience and expertise are appreciated and acknowledged. Last but not least, I would like to acknowledge all the city employees that work hard everyday. I look forward to continue working by their

side. I am very proud of the job they do daily. I really enjoy when ever I have the opportunity to work with them on an event, a meeting or a training day. Marshall would not be the place it is without all of them. I encourage each of you to be involved, join us on the first and third Monday evenings for our meetings. Make your desire known if you wish to join a committee, offer experiences, volunteer your time to be a part of a team that preserves our historic heritage and yet moves Marshall ahead into the future to be the premiere place to live, work and raise our families. Jack Reed, Marshall

Beware of identity theft, don’t give out information To the Editor: In April 2014, I went to file my tax return electronically. The IRS said it was already filed. A computer tech got into my computer to fix it (so he said) and stole my tax return that I was ready to send. I called the IRS right away and they had my return right there with the man’s name on it. He did not get the

money and he got a prison term. The IRS is going to publish a six-digit number to everyone to file their tax return with. I lost everything; my social security number, my name, address, money and I am getting bills I did not create and loan companies sending me letters where someone is applying for loans in my name. I got another letter last week from

the IRS that someone is trying again. Then a handful of debit cards were stolen and mine was one of them (of course). Please be careful with all your information. The IRS said it is getting worse. Send your tax by paper return. Try not to use debit cards. Yvonne Howe, Marshall

“I’ve always loved to golf. But as my heart condition got worse, I couldn’t do much of anything anymore. Even walking across the room left me feeling tired and out of breath. Fortunately for me, the doctors at Bronson helped change all that. They told me about a new heart surgery called TAVR that could actually give me my life back. And that’s exactly what happened. Within days of my surgery at Bronson Methodist Hospital, I could walk without feeling out of breath, and I wasn’t tired anymore. My nurses, they were great, too. They talked to me, listened to me, even gave me pudding and popsicles in the middle of the night. Better yet, I’m back doing all the things I did before my heart condition: mowing the lawn, going to the gym and playing golf with the guys — terrible as ever.” Roy Kidney, Battle Creek, Michigan, September 17, 2014

Marshall swimmers win first-ever league title

photos by John Hendler

Marshall swimmers and coaches celebrate winning the Southwestern and Central Michigan Conference championship on Nov. 8. The conference title was the first-ever for a swim team from Marshall High School. By JOHN HENDLER News Editor The Marshall High School girls swimming and diving team beat rival Harper Creek to claim the Southwestern and Central Michigan Conference championship at Allegan High School Nov. 8, the first ever league title for a Marshall team. Following preliminaries on Nov. 7, where swimmers looked to make the top 16 to advance to the finals the next day, Marshall and Harper Creek went back and forth between first and second place on Nov. 8 as the meet progressed. In the end, Marshall had 478 points to Harper Creek’s 430. Going into the meet, Marshall was at the top of the conference based on their regular season

performance. After Harper Creek won the first two events, the 200yard medley relay and the 200-yard freestyle (Marshall’s Brooklyn Tobias was second), Marshall got its first win of the day when Anna Sitar won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.49, breaking the longest standing school record dating back to Heather Brazas in the early 1980s. In the 50-yard freestyle, Marshall had a third place finish as Taylor Karns had a time of 25.96 seconds. In the diving competition, Harper Creek had the third and fourth place divers, while Marshall’s Ally Johnson finished sixth. In the 100-yard butterfly, Tobias was third (1:04.9), finishing behind swimmers

from Allegan and Alma, while Harper Creek’s Sydney Houghtalin was fifth. In the 100-yard freestyle, Karns was third (56.75), just finishing ahead of Harper Creek’s Heather McDaniels (57.00). In the 500-yard freestyle, the schools switched spots as Harper Creek’s Sophie Marshall (5:37.11) just edged out Marshall’s Natalie Steiner (5:38.31) for third place. Marshall then started to add to its lead following its victory in the 200-yard freestyle relay as the team of Tobias, Karns, Sitar and Erin Culp finished first with a time of 1:43.56, which was just under half a second faster than the Harper Creek team. Harper Creek did close the gap some in the 100-yard

backstroke, finishing 1-3-4, with Marshall’s Jane Turner coming in fifth with a time of 1:05.49. In the next to last event, the 100-yard backstroke, Sitar, with a time of 1:10.99, finished just ahead of Harper Creek’s Jena Wager(1:11.20). all but assuring Marshall of the conference championship. Harper Creek won the final event of the meet, the 400-yard freestyle relay as the Marshall team of Culp, Tobias, Sitar and Karns finished just a half second behind. Following the trophy presentation, the Marshall team, including coaches Dave Karns, Steven Weaver and Ron Warlick, took a celebratory dive into the pool.

Anna Sitar passes Plainwell’s Abby Ernst on her way to winning the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:17.49 , about three seconds faster than Ernst. On the podium, Sitar celebrates with third place finsiher Sophie Marshall from Harper Creek.

Veterans Day 2014: Remembering the sacrifices of our veterans

Army Staff Sgt. Christopher Cazinha was the guest speaker for the event. “My dad never talked about the war, but I remember when I was young playing with G.I. Joes and watching war movies. The day I joined the Army was the first time I saw my dad breakdown. He told me his only wish in life was that his son would never see the things he saw. I understood that after my first tour. But I have pride every day I put my uniform on. If they asked me to do it all over again, I would. Why go again? It’s America. This is what we fought for. I want to thank those veterans who came before me. If you hadn’t, we wouldn’t have freedoms to enjoy this day.” (Photo by Corinne Harter)

Diving clinic at MHS Pool begins Nov. 17 The Marshall Community Pool will be hosting a Diving Clinic starting Nov. 17. The clinic will be held Monday –Friday from 6-7 p.m. The clinic is offered to all ages and levels of expertise. The goal is to teach the basics of diving, refine skills that divers may already possess and

push divers to try new challenges through the diving instructor’s supervision. Middle school aged divers (grades 6, 7, 8) will also compete in middle school meets (schedules will be handed out). A sports physical form must be turned in for middle competition.

The cost of the clinic is $100 per diver. Please make checks payable to Marshall Athletics. The pool is located at 701 N. Marshall Avenue, Marshall, MI 49068. Please call with any questions at 269-781-1331.
