In The News: Winifred Lautzenheiser awarded 2013 Legend of 4-H Award Marshall resident and longtime 4-H supporter Winifred Lautzenheiser was presented with the 2013 Legend of 4-H Award on Aug. 17, following the Show of Champions at the Calhoun County Fair. “She is very deserving,” said Harold Thomas, who presented her with the award. “I was completely surprised,” said Lautzenheiser, with tears in her eyes. “I’m honestly amazed. I didn’t know all these kids could keep a secret. This awards means a lot me me. Anything to do with 4-H and things with kids has always been important to me.”

As of Aug 16, there were already 1,000 participants signed up. “We are capping it off at 1,500 participants,” Hackworth said. The last day to register for the event is Sept. 1 by midnight, unless the cap is hit before that. To register, go to bakersdozenbeerrun.com.

In the Batman movie The Dark Knight, Alfred Pennyworth’s character says to Bruce Wayne, “Drive sports cars, date movie stars, buy things that are not for sale... who knows, Master Wayne? You start pretending to have fun, you might even have a little by accident.” Lenard Ganey, 55, of Ceresco may not be driving sports cars or dating movie stars, but on Aug. 17, he sure was having fun when he drove his Batmobile onto the Calhoun County Fairgrounds infield for the 2013 demolition derby. “My grandsons thought of the idea to do a Batman theme this year,” Ganey said. “They love following all the superheros, especially Batman. All three of them watch it and are really into it. When I showed them the car, they thought it was pretty neat.”

Word on the Street What are looking forward to returning to school? Editor’s Corner

Marshall High School registration took place on Aug. 21 and these six students were asked what they’re most looking forward to for the new school year, which begins Sept. 3.

by John Hendler It was Sept. 13, 1995 when my newborn son came home from the hospital with two excited, but weary (and wary) brand new parents, somewhat clueless on what to do with this child we made. I figured that a newborn baby would cry the entire night so when he fell asleep in my arms, I told my wife to go get some rest while I held him in my arms and let him sleep. I figured he would wake in a matter of minutes, but it turned out to be four hours that I got to hold him while sitting absolutely motionless, afraid that the slightest movement would break the midnight silence. While holding him, I tried to imagine what he would look like as a boy, as a young man and as an adult. Being the happy and proud papa, I imagined him going off to college at some prestigious university like Harvard or Yale 18 years later. That seemed like a lot of time-18 years. And then I remembered something my grandmother would often tell me: “This too shall pass.” She meant it not only in bad times but also in good times, a reminder to live in the moment and enjoy the ride. That night was just over 6,500 days ago. Who knew that that many days would pass much more quickly than I could have ever imagined? This week, my son heads off to college and for he and I and my daughter, this week will be filled with many emotions. I’m sure he will miss us, but I believe that I, and my daughter, to some extent, will have it worse as the ones being “left behind.” He is getting ready for what I hope for him will be the start of an incredible journey. But as he goes out to stake his claim, I know that my role in his life is diminishing. That’s what I think happened with my parents when I went off to school. I was so thrilled to get my life started that I never considered the sadness or loss that my parents and younger sister felt when I drove off for college 30 years ago. Michael Gerson, in The Washington Post last week wrote about saying goodbye to his child, the youngster: Parenthood offers many lessons in patience and sacrifice. But ultimately, it is a lesson in humility. The very best thing about your life is a short stage in someone else’s story. And it is enough. I feel privileged to have been part of my son’s story and I know I’ll feel the same way about my daughter when her time to leave comes in two years. It has been the best ride of my life, but it’s a ride that ended much too soon. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Letters MLK’s ‘I have a dream speech’: 50 years later To the Editor: Fifty years ago, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. shared his dream. On Aug. 28, 1963, on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C., Dr. King said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident that all men are created equal.’” On the 50th anniversary of this memorable event, Wednesday, Aug. 28, the Albion Historical Society, the Albion branch of the NAACP, the Albion Business and Professional Women's Club and the Greater Albion

Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Bureau will hold a celebration, at 7 p.m. at the Ismon House, 300 South Clinton St. in Albion. Several local residents will read the entire speech. They include: Tonya Arnett, Sylvia Benavidez, Nina Davidson, Vivian Davis, Mae Ola Dunklin, Ron Gant, Barbara Gladney, Ed Kernish, Ken Ponds, eighth grader Akaiia Ridley, sophomore Jontaj Wallace II and Pastor Steve Williams of Grace Temple. Then, Albion College History Chair and Professor Wesley Dick and local volunteer Tom Brown will share their experiences of meeting

Dr. King when he visited Albion and Detroit earlier that year, and the marches they participated in. Mr. Dick will also talk about his journey to Washington, D.C. to march on Aug. 24, as part of the commemorative celebrations there. During the Albion event, Dorothy Dickerson, owner of Books & More, will be on hand to sell the beautiful color versions of the “I Have A Dream” book for all ages, by Dr. King and with paintings by Kadir Nelson. It includes a CD of the original speech. Also at this celebration, NAACP President Bob Dunklin will speak about its

recent convention. This event is free and open to the public. Hors d'oeuvres will be served. The Albion Historical Society preserves and displays the heritage of the Albion area. For more information, visit the Gardner House Museum, 509 South Superior in Albion, call 517- 629-5100 or visit www.albionhistoricalsociety. org. We don’t need or want another dam removal To the Editor:

As a canoer, kayaker and fishermen, I know it will be almost impossible to go from 15 Mile Road to Ceresco. All that will be left is a large stretch of mudflats and inadequate river water left for pleasure crafts and fishing. It will be impossible to get to the portage or just get off the river in that area. A beautiful portage/park was installed at a large expense, which will now be useless. Ask the people who use and enjoy the river, not the people who do not use it. Use the money to replace or repair

oil pipelines instead. If you want to take out some dams, take out the ones on the Grand River in Lansing, leave the Kalamazoo alone. About 5 years ago, Rice Creek (Marshall) was destroyed for recreation by-passing the Mill Race dam (removal was planned but still here - ugly - the city ran out of funds). This was all under the direction of grants by the DNR (70,000), Great Lakes Basin ($14,000), U.S. fisheries and Wildlife ($25,000). Plus $89,000 from Marshall taxpayers as the project ran out of

money. Many changes had to be made to keep the smell down. At Ketchum Park more grass has to be cut by the city now, no ducks to entertain the children, and Rice Creek is too low for recreation. The project was never finished. The removal of the dam will surely increase gas prices. In other words, we don’t want/need another dam removal in our area. Augie & June Triebold, Marshall

After two weeks of practice and just a week before the season opener at StevensvilleLakeshore Aug. 29, Marshall High School varsity football coach Jim Hendershot is looking to put the right players in the right place. The only “locks” in the starting lineup are quarterback Danny Welke, linemen Madison Hautau and Drew Maisner and receiver Landry Reynolds. Other than that, says the coach, he’s still in the process of evaluating his team to hopefully find the right mix to bring the Redhawks a second straight post season appearance. “We still have a lot of positions open and a lot of question marks, said Hendershot, now in his fourth season as head coach. Last year, Hendershot introduced a new offense scheme and believes that with one year of the new system under their belts, there will be less of a learning curve. “For most of the players, a lot of this is now just review,” he said. “I think that we are a little bit farther ahead offensively compared to last year. The important thing will be staying healthy.” Hendershot expects Welke to be the team leader in and out of the huddle. “He’s got leadership capabilities and he has knowledge of the offense,” said Hendershot. “He makes corrections on the fly.”

Marshall Redhawks FALL SPORTS PREVIEWS Volleyball set to repeat as district champs John Miller is in his third season as varsity volleyball coach and shares his thoughts on the upcoming season: The one area of concern was going to be defense because we lost Carmen O’Dell. That was a huge loss for us, so I’m expecting some of the younger girls to step up into that libero position and really anchor our defense. Offensively, we should be a lot stronger than last year with the emergence of both Grace Crawford and Logan Kiessling playing very, very strong on the outside and with Kaylie Bates joining Brooke Mason in setting the ball, we should be very good offensively. I would love to see us repeat as district champions, but Harper Creek is going to be tough; Parchment is going to be tough. Playing at Parchment will make the task even tougher. I also expect Pennfield to pretty good this year. The 2013 Marshall High School Varsity Volleyball Team. Front row from left: Summer Maurer, Grace Corcoran, Chandler Veich and Brooke Mason. ‘Young’ tennis team could be full of surprises Boys Varsity Tennis Coach Kevin Brownell shares his thoughts on the upcoming season: I think we have an even younger team this year than last year. Dustin Dewitt is our only senior. We have a lot of freshmen on this team that also have a lot of potential.Freshman Cole Varvatos will be number one singles for sure. We also have our sophomores that got a lot of playing time on varsity last year that will help us be successful. Still, we’re young. It will somewhat challenging getting back into the swing of things because a lot of our players didn’t play over the summer because the courts at the high school were closed. And because our team is so young, they’re not able to drive themselves to play elsewhere. If we had more juniors and seniors, it would be a different story.
