In The News: Three-year battle comes to an end with Hospital Campus Overlay District passed unanimously In what some would call an uneventful end to a three-year-long debate, the Marshall City Council had a short discussion on the topic of the Oaklawn Hospital Campus Overlay District ordinance at its Sept. 3 meeting and then passed it unanimously. “After everything we have been through, I want to thank you sincerely for all the work you’ve done on the HCOD,” said Oaklawn Hospital President and CEO Ginger Williams addressing the council. “You’ve stayed focused and consistent on what you believed to be best for the community. I commend you and thank you for that and for your service to the city.” See story on page 20

The beginning of a new year: Marshall High School welcomes Albion students It was the first day of school for students at Marshall High School on Sept. 3, the day that saw the start of a new era as Albion students were welcomed into the MHS fold. For some of the Albion students, it was the first time that they had stepped foot into the building, but for all students, it was the beginning to a new year. “We’re really excited with Albion joining the Marshall family,” said MPS Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis. “This is what it’s all about; kids coming to say hello and get connected. I’m hoping that everything goes smoothly as far as all the logistics.” See story on page 61

Marshall receives $26,000 refund from 911 Dispatch Authority The Calhoun County 911 Consolidated Dispatch Authority has voted to refund $300,000 in savings to local municipalities who were signatories under the CCCDA Interlocal Agreement. “Rather than to purchase capital improvements or to invest those monies, we decided to issue rebates,” said 911 Dispatch Executive Director Jeff Troyer at the Marshall City Council Sept.. 3 meeting. “Those who entered into that agreement, started this (the consolidated dispatch authority). If it wasn’t for them, we wouldn’t be here today.” See story on page 30

A love affair with art: Philip Carey brings his dreams to life What started as vivid dreams or memories of a scenic view on the way to a dialysis treatment have now become unique works of art on either a 3x5 Post-it or a mailing envelope. “The envelope starts blank, and as I look at it I imagine something and then bring it to life,” said California artist Philip Carey. Carey began his envelope artwork to impress a woman from his past, who is now his girlfriend. His art display entitled, “Dear Linda” can be viewed this weekend during Home Tour at the Postal Museum or at East End Studio & Gallery. See story on page 58

Sydney Reichenbaugh steps from the soccer field to the gridiron There weren’t many things that went right for the Marshall High School varsity football team in its 56-14 season-opening loss at StevensvilleLakeshore on Aug. 29. But Marshall kicker Sydney Reichenbaugh had what many would call a perfect night, driving two kickoffs deep, converting on both extra point attempts and saving a touchdown on a kick return by tackling the ball carrier. Not bad for her high school football debut. See story on page 41

Word on the Street Should the U.S. get involved militarily with Syria? Editor’s Corner by John Hendler There’s always something exciting about the first day of school, and last Tuesday at Marshall High School was no exception. There was this buzz, this energy in the air as students gathered in the four corners of the school reuniting with friends and meeting new classmates as the Albion-Marshall cooperative officially got underway. Talking with some kids from Albion, they talked of the excitement on the bus ride to Marshall as well as some of the nerves that come from the first day of school, let alone the first day of school at a new school in a new town. But to walk in the school and hear the din of the kids’ conversations, things seemed like business as usual as they were talking about what they did over the summer or what they wanted to do after school. Kids just being kids. Beginnings are a time for fresh starts, and it looks like the new start of this Albion-Marshall cooperative is headed in the right direction. As legendary baseball manager Sparky Anderson said: Good seasons start with good beginnings. So far, so good. Sure, there will be bumps in the road and unexpected challenges, but it looks like Superintendent Dr. Randy Davis and his team, that also includes folks from Albion, have painstaking in their approach and I believe that when this school year is at a close, the naysayers who said this arrangement would never work, will be silenced. Harold Nicholson, the late English diplomat, author and politician once said that the “great secret of a successful marriage is to treat all disasters as incidents and none of the incidents as disasters.” I believe this “marriage” of sorts between Albion and Marshall will be OK if all parties heed Mr. Nicholson’s words. As Principal Dan Luciani said on Tuesday: “It’s going to be an awesome year.” Now time for my football prediction for this week’s home opener (Sept. 6) versus Mattawan. I think the team will bounce back from last week’s loss at Stevensville-Lakeshore and will provide the home fans with a satisfying 28-14 victory to even their record at 1-1. By the way, fans will most certainly notice the newly refurbished bleachers that no longer feature plants and trees growing out of the cracks. So, no need to bring your watering cans. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

After saying the United States should take military action against Syria after their use of chemical weapons against its own citizens last month, president Obama, last week, decided to seek congressional approval first.

Dangerous national curriculum: Now in our schools To the Editor: Common Core (CC) removes local control and accountability: This isn’t the first time the federal government has attempted to form a national curriculum. They’ve never been able to get it through Congress because our congressmen knew it was against the law. So, the Obama administration and Department of Education decided to go around federal and state governments and tempt our state departments of education by bribing tem with $4.35 billion of federal stimulus money to the first states who signed on to CC - even though CC standards and the national assessment test had yet to be written. They also promised that states who adopted CC would have a better chance for a waiver from No Child Left Behind. The states, in need of money, accepted CC without the necessary scrutiny concerning its merit and/or legality. As Dean Kalahar writes on The American Thinker blog: “President Obama and Education Secretary Duncan falsely said the Common Core standards were developed by the states and voluntarily adopted. Common Core was actually developed by an organization called Achieve and the National Governors Association, funded by the Gates Foundation by at least

$173 million dollars. (The National Governors Association is a trade association that does not include all governors.) The administration created two consortiums. When our Michigan Department of Education signed us into the smarter balanced consortium, they passed a line that had never before been crossed. They gave up all educational decisions to an unelected, unaccountable bureaucracy to decide what to teach. It started us down a slippery slope. The test design being developed by Smarter Balanced is heavily influenced by Stanford education professor Linda Darling-Hammond. Darling-Hammond is a former colleague of domestic terrorist-turned education expert, Bill Ayers. Darling-Hammond is the past president of the American Educational Research Association (AERA) and Ayers was elected in 2008 as AERA’s vice president of curriculum. Linda DarlingHammond was also a prominent advisor to then-Senator Barack Obama during his 2008 run for the presidency. Her “Stanford New Schools” is on California’s list of the lowest achieving 5 percent. CC removes the privacy of families: The Fordham Law Center questions the pru-

dence of pushing states to expand student data systems which invade student privacy according to the “Family Education Rights and Privacy Act.” According to Joy Pullman of the Heartland Institute, the federal government will have access to not only the child’s test results but their private information——without parental knowledge or consent. They plan to collect 415 attributes on every child including: 1-Any disease the child has had 2-Any legal problems 3-religious preference 4-sexual preference 5-if child has been excused for a religious reason 6-child’s social security # in two places 7-child’s acceptance of diversity They require the collection of data to link from the school to the district to the state to the federal government and other agencies. As parents are learning about their children’s private information going into a national data bank, they are outraged, but Bill Gates of Microsoft is smiling. All tests are to be taken via computer. CC is against the law: Despite three federal laws that prohibit federal departments or agencies from directing, supervising or controlling ele-

mentary and secondary school curricula, programs of instruction and instructional materials, the U.S. Department of Ed has placed the nation on the road to a national curriculum. The Department has organized 2 consortia to “help” states move to common standards and assessments. Dr. Williams Evers, research fellow at Stanford University’s Hoover Institution and Koret Task Force on K-12 Education member, says, “The two testing consortia funded by the U.S. Department of Ed have already expanded their activities well beyond the limits of the law.” He recommends the actions of the Department warrant congressional hearings. Our U.S. Constitution seeks a healthy balance of power between states and the federal government, and wisely leaves the question of academic standards, curriculum and instruction up to the states (U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, Amendment 10). 4. CC removes Educational Choices: Advocates of CC argue that we need a national curriculum because of students moving from state to state. Data indicate that interstate mobility among schoolage children is 0.3 percent. Letter continued on next page

Rough start on road for Redhawks Marshall loses season opener to Lakeshore, 56-14

photos by John Hendler

Marshall players take the field prior to the start of the team’s season opener at Stevensville-Lakeshore on Aug. 29 where Marshall was defeated 56-14. Marshall’s two touchdowns came on passes from quarterback Danny Welke to receivers Brandon Turner and Landry Reynolds. Marshall played its home opener Friday evening (Sept. 6) versus Mattawan and will host Harper Creek on Sept. 13.

Quarterback Danny Welke threw scoring passes to receivers Brandon Turner and Landry Reynolds.
