Marshall Redhawks SPRING SPORTS PREVIEWS Soccer seeks 4th district title and more Marshall High School girls varsity soccer coach Adrian Harkey has plenty of reasons to look forward to this season as Marshall seeks a fourth-straight district title and its first regional title. “This is the most soccertalented team we’ve ever had, said Harkey, who is in his seventh season as varsity coach.. “Our talent goes much deeper than last year. It will be disappointing if we don’t get further in the post season.” Marshall is coming off another historical season equaling the most wins in a season for the second straight year with 16. The 32 wins over a two year period are the most in school history. “We will be a very experienced team with 13 returning varsity players including seven seniors, four of those being four-year varsity players-Lauren Feasel, Tierra Orban, Kelsey Postema and Sydney Reichenbaugh. We will have six juniors that all have varsity experience, a group of sophomores and freshmen that we are really excited about, and we have one of the best keepers around (Kelsey Postema) who has signed to play at Oakland University next year. Most of the juniors and seniors have played a lot of soccer together so we will be able to make a lot of tactical changes throughout the season if necessary. We have a very tough schedule and we are looking forward to again competing for the SMAC East title and for another district championship.” Harkey has dubbed this year’s themes as “This Is It” as his four, fourth-year varsity players seek to add to the school record with its fourth district title.

Golfers look to again to be one of the elite programs in the state After finishing second in the state last year in Div. 2, Marshall High School golf coach Tom Reynolds feels his team has what it takes to make another bid for a state title. “We have a chance; our guys can play,” said Reynolds, whose team finished just six shots back of state winner Grand Rapids Christian in the two-round state finals last year. “These guys are highly capable. It just depends how things break for us.” Returning are seniors Tanor Blowers, Jared Gardner, Brandon Hawkins and Aaron McCoy. Hawkins, Blowers

and McCoy played at state last year with Blowers (76) and McCoy (79) having low rounds in the 70s while Hawkins’ low round was 80. A big factor for this season, said Reynolds is the shape golf courses will be in following a brutal winter and heavy spring rains last week. “Weather will be a huge factor this season,” said Reynolds. “Hopefully, it will be all right, but we need the ground to dry. I have a feeling we will not be able to start the season on time (April 16). I hope I’m wrong.

Marshall Redhawks SPRING SPORTS PREVIEWS Baseball to rely on senior experience this season This season, the Marshall High School varsity baseball team will feature 10 seniors on its roster, five of whom have more than two years of varsity experience. “We will rely on that experience and leadership throughout the season,” said coach Trevor Kelly. On the mound, Dan Welke, John Dorosh, Drew DeVine, Alex Walton, and Austin Busse and Antonio Lerma are experienced pitchers. Newcomers Brandon Wade, Tyler Weck, and Scott Reagle are talented and will provide depth as well, said Kelly. All four starting infielders are back: Mitch Konkle (IB), Alex Walton (2B), Drew DeVine (SS), and John Dorosh (3B) as well as 1B/DH Drew Maisner. Behind the plate the Redhawks will be deep with senior Dan Welke, sophomore Scott Reagle, and junior Zane Knafel. Austin Busse and Will Patters return as starters in the outfield while Antonio Lerma, Jerome Washington and Tyler Weck will also compete for a starting job. “Overall, the program is heading in the right direction,” said Kelly. “We have balance offensively and depth on the mound. Our biggest strength this year is our ability to pick the ball up on defense and make plays. The infield is very strong and they work together well. The SMAC East is very difficult but we will put ourselves in position to win and hopefully be at our best come districts.”

Tennis team a mix of returning and new players The Marshall High School girls varsity tennis team looks to build on last season’s 11-5-1 record. But they will have to do it with a blend of experienced and new players. “I'm very excited about this year,” said coach Kevin Brownell. “We will have a lot of new faces as we return only six players from last year’s varsity team. The girls have had an excellent attitude even with the less than ideal conditions for early season practices. We are all looking forward nicer weather and quality time on the courts.” In a scrimmage a couple of weeks ago versus Stevensville-Lakeshore, Brownell felt his team

held its own. This year’s returning players include seniors Chandler Veich, Olivia Olmstead and Mary Townsend; juniors Jamie DiMoff and Brooklyn Tobias; and sophomore Grace Corcoran. Newcomers include Taylor Karns, Erica Chamberlain, Sydney Bies and Chelsey Bennett. The team is scheduled to open its season on April 15 at home versus Battle Creek Central at 4:30 p.m. The team will also be home April 17 versus Coldwater and on April 19 for the Marshall Sports Festival.

Marshall Redhawks SPRING SPORTS PREVIEWS Softball looks to find its identity with new players Marshall High School varsity softball coach Anthony Miller said that having graduated nine players from last year's team including two-year starting pitcher Katie Jarvis, this season will be a season of “figuring out just who we are.” We will be relying on two returning senior starters in Ashley Kent (pitcher) and EJ Marshall (3rd base) to help guide this young squad through this season,” said Miller. “We will also be counting on a senior transfer student, Tesla Meade, to provide some much needed leadership as well. To complement these seniors will be juniors Brooklyn Patton (pitcher, SS), Hope Earl (catcher), Olivia Meister (2nd), Chelsea Lake (1st base).” The sophomores include center fielder, Madison Couch, catcher Jazmin Yaudes, infielder/outfielder Haley Bennett, and

shortstop Kaylie Bates. “The last member of our team is freshman Lindsay Gardner who will fill the role of infielder and outfielder,” said Miller. “The main goal for this season is to learn how to play together and become a better team each and every day. The girls have worked extremely hard to improve their skills over this long winter and we are looking forward to finally being able to get on the field instead of being in the gym. I foresee our share of growing pains throughout the year, but we will work hard to put things together and compete at the highest level. I think our strengths include team speed and our infield defenders.” The team is scheduled to open its season with a home doubleheader on April 15 versus Battle Creek Central.

Girls track and field expects ‘rewarding season’ The number of athletes on the Marshall High School girls track team may be smaller than in years’ past (30), but coach Steve Wissink said he still expects a “rewarding season.” “We will be led by last year's double regional champion and All-State long jumper Kitana Espinoza,” said Wissink. “Also leading our team will be captains Monica Lubis (distance), Aundrea Meeks (throws), and Cassandra Barlow (middle distance, relays). Taylor Jungel will lead us in the pole vault and high jump, and help out with relays. Other returning letter winners include Maddie Rayner, Tiffany Gross, Hannah

Koch, Caitlyn Quinn and Alivia Shumaker. Wissink said the team will have a number of new girls that should score points. “Senior Katrina Patterson and juniors Sammi Price and Emily Winkler all show potential,” he said. “Sophomores Asha Ritchie and Madisyn Burkwalt should also make the team stronger. We have some very promising freshmen, including Morgan Armstrong, Morgan Drumm, Desiree Hunter, Audrey Lewis, Ally Nelson, Dymond Stokes, Kaitlyn Turner, Shatara Washington, Hannah Delmotte and Zoey Zacharski.”

Note: Due to scheduling conflicts, the preview and photo of the Marshall High School boys track and field team will be in the April 19 edition of the advisor&chronicle.
