“I knew I needed stitches after a young horse jolted back and hit me in the face. What I didn’t know was where I’d get the best care. My biggest fear was being left with a big scar. But that all changed when I went to Bronson Battle Creek. I didn’t wait long. And everyone in that emergency department was so comforting and kind. My doctor was fantastic, too. He made me laugh when I needed it most, and my face healed up nicely. So thanks, Bronson, for making my bad day a whole lot better.” Talia Champlin, Battle Creek, Michigan, December 30, 2013

Word on the Street What makes the city of Marshall unique? Editor’s Corner by John Hendler Here we are, on the brink of another school year and a new season, autumn, meteorologically speaking. And of course, football season is upon us. Finally. There’s something about September that just brings a certain spring to our step, doesn’t it? As students and teachers can attest, coming back in September to the start of a new school year is a very exciting time as people catch up with old friends and see familiar faces. It’s also a chance to start anew, with a clean slate. Although my job has no real start or ending to the year, I do get excited each fall as high school sports get back into full swing and the community is abuzz with all that’s going on. Of course, when the spring sports season winds down in June I’m always happy to see the school year (and sports year) come to a close as bouncing from game to game certainly takes it toll after nine months. But, just like the marathon runner who vows never again when crossing the finish line only to run another day, I start to long for those sporting events after about a month and when the first day of fall sports practices arrive, I can’t wait to get out there and see the coaches and players. I don’t go to many professional sporting events anymore - the distance and expense do play a part, but it’s mostly because I have no desire to go to those events. I’d much rather go to see our high school teams play where I actually know the kids and just like their parents, want them to go out there and do their best. I may not shout it from the sidelines of the games I cover, but I am a homer. I remember as a kid when I’d get excited about a particular team or player, my father would always warn me that those teams and players had no real allegiance to me or the community and would leave town for more money or a better stadium deal and not give me a second, or rather, a first thought when they did that. Of course, that was a very broad generalization, but it no doubt stayed with me all those years. Sure, these kids grow up and move on, but our allegiance to these kids will stay with them for the rest of their lives and they won’t forget it no matter how much money they make or whatever great stadium deal they’re offered. Until next week, may the good news be yours.
Marshall will be celebrating its 51st Annual Home Tour Sept. 6-7. With hundreds of people visiting town to see the historical architecture, downtown shops and local draws, we asked these six people what makes Marshall special.
Lisa Fisher Ragan, Duck Lake
Jenn Lawrence, Jackson
Paula Wilson Towery, Homer
"The unique mix of small town charm with big city diversity and the friendliness of the people who live work and visit here.”
"There are so many unique shops and places to visit. You can get a tattoo, fix a leaky pipe, shop for antiques and get a meal all within the downtown area.”
"I love the laid back hippie attitude.”
Joe Caron, Marshall
Megan Harvey, Marshall
Karen Burghdorf, Marshall
"The City of Hospitality says it all. Marshall brings together history, tradition, industry, commerce, and treelined neighborhoods - all in a smalltown setting with a welcoming spirit. It doesn’t get any better!”
"Marshall is a town where you want to move out of as a kid, but then when you have your own kids you realize there is no better place to raise a child than Marshall. It is great being a part of a small-knitted community that pulls together.”
"Marshall has been our hometown for four generations. Many families love it so much, they do whatever they can to find a job and make a living here. Growing up in Marshall, we all knew each other as we passed on the streets and in the stands at high school games. Marshall is a lovely town, and we are blessed to live here.”

Wishing homes to be shielded from parking lot lights To the Editor: For past few months, homes near the Oaklawn Hospital expanded parking lot project on Prospect St., have endured the clouds of dust raised and sounds of construction equipment in operation - for nearly 10 hours every working day. Now the pavement has been laid and border fences
installed, which gives promise that completion is not too far off. But, I’m concerned that the lighting to be erected will flood the area like a prison compound - once they’re operational. I certainly do not look forward seeing a neon glow nightly that will ruin the tranquility of darkness and intrude an icy cold glare
over neighboring homes. I’m new to the area and hope the presentation Oaklawn made and approved by our city council, included a provision to have parking lot night lighting with shields that would allow downward light for security purposes, but block out unwanted illumination above and at 90 degree angles
from operating light sources. This might supply some comfort to the residents of the historical district of Marshall and wishes that our homes keep the atmosphere that attracted us to this city to begin with. Bruce Gillespie, Marshall
Thanking letter writer for ‘Masks in the Sun’ explanation To the Editor: Thank you, Wanda Warner, for the excellent letter last week regarding “Masks in the Sun.” I couldn’t follow

Thanks again, Wanda. David Ratajczak, Marshall

Marshall Redhawks FALL SPORTS PREVIEWS MHS varsity hopes hard work pays off After a set of scrimmages in Eaton Rapids Aug. 21, Marshall High School varsity football coach Jim Hendershot was mostly pleased with what he saw. “I thought the scrimmage was a perfect scrimmage because it proved to us that we could play, that we got a lot of work done and that we need to be in better shape. That’s the trifecta of a scrimmage. “The scrimmages showed that we can play with other teams, that we can be a good team when we want to be.” Marshall opened up its regular season at Milan Aug. 28. Alex Walton will be the starting quarterback and Tyler Horn, Forrest Jackson and Chris Upright are expected to play prominent backfield roles. Key receivers include Brandon Turner, Travis Mumaw and Bryce Blanchard. “We’ve got to stay healthy; that’s key,” said Hendershot. “We don’t have a lot of depth but we have hard working kids. “The senior class leadership has been excellent. It’s not just one or two guys.” Hendershot said he’s looking forward to Marshall being in the new Interstate 8 Athletic Conference. “I think the league will be

But, it will be a tough schedule. Marshall’s first home game is on Sept. 12 against I-8 rival Parma Western at 7 p.m.
Golfers look to return to state The Marshall High School girls golf team opened its 2014 season by placing seventh out of 12 teams at the Traverse City Invitational Aug. 21-22 but finished 41 shots better than last year at the same event. “That’s kind of what we are looking for,” said coach Dick Hamilton. On the second day of the event Annie Cape shot a career-best 82 and Sammi Price shot 88 to lead Marshall. Still, the team’s lack of
depth concerns Hamilton. "We really don't have room for error," he said. "Right now, Sammi and Annie are pretty solid. If we can score in the low 370s, we will be competitive.” At the Hanover-Horton Invitational in Jackson on Aug. 25, Marshall finished second out of 14 schools shooting 383. Price led Marshall with a 89, while Cape shot 91. Also breaking 1`00 was Elena Buczynski, who shot 99.

Marshall Redhawks FALL SPORTS PREVIEWS Marshall swimmers eye to make state meet In figuring out which swimmers would be in which events in 2014, Marshall High School girls swimming coach Dave Karns said the plan went into motion as soon as last year’s state meet was completed. “By the end of the season last year, I was already looking to fill the spots that needed to be filled,” said Karns. “This year, we’ve got a good group of freshmen and a good group of returners. We’re going to be a pretty deep team.” In all, the team is comprised of 26 swimmers and five divers which is about 10 fewer overall than last year. “I’m happy with our numbers,” said Karns. “The good thing about this year’s team is that 90 percent of the girls could swim any event on the board. That helps us.” Last year, Marshall sent three individual swimmers and three relay teams to state and Karns expects another strong year. “I think we can get three relays and some individual to qualify for state in season,” said Karns. “I’m looking forward to a strong season.”

Volleyball squad young but experienced With only two seniors- Brooke Mason and Logan Kiesslingon the roster, one might think Marshall High School varsity volleyball coach John Miller would have his share of concerns. "You would think, that with only two seniors that we wouldn't have a ton of experience, but with those two being four-year varsity starters, I'm looking for a lot of leadership out of them," said Miller. "With Kaylie Bates and Emily Delmotte being key returners, I'm looking for a lot of leadership out of those two as well. We've got a lot of new faces, but I'm not worried about inexperience at this point."

Marshall Redhawks FALL SPORTS PREVIEWS ‘Solid’ soccer squad looks to regain district form After going into last season’s district tournament as defending champion, the Marshall High School varsity soccer team saw its season come to an end in the first round. But third-year coach Tony Tartaglia believes this year’s squad may be his best yet. "I think this year is going to be it," said Tartaglia. "Everything just looks so good. I think we have a real solid team.” This year’s captains are Alec Kraushaar, Phil Delapas and Sean Fitzgerald. "But, we've had many other players also stepping
up to take a leadership role which has been great,” said Tartaglia. With Marshall joining the newly formed Interstate 8 Athletic Conference, the coach says he’s looking forward to league play. "I think the schools in the conference are more comparable to Marshall,” said Tartaglia. He added that this year’s group will be entertaining to watch. "I think we will have a winning record and that will put more people in the stands,” he said. photos by John Hendler

Experience hopes to pay off for MHS tennis For the last couple of years, Marshall High School boys tennis coach Kevin Brownell has been forced to field teams made up consistently of underclassmen. But now, those same players have given Brownell one of his most experienced teams. "Last year we didn't have any seniors and these guys have played a lot of varsity tennis," said Brownell. "We have a lot of experience and I think it's going to pay off
for us. We've gone from being very inexperienced to one of the most experienced teams I've ever had." The coach says he was pleased how his team performed in the season opening Marshall Quad Aug. 21. "I was pleasantly surprised how we played,” he said. “We beat Gull Lake by one point." Marshall then went on to beat Leslie, 7-1 on Aug. 25. I’m very excited for this season,” said Brownell.

Marshall Redhawks FALL SPORTS PREVIEWS Girls cross-country looks to raise the bar Marshall High School girls cross-country coach Steve Wissink feels he has a good squad, but in the very competitive world of crosscountry, that may not be good enough. “In order to beat teams that are very good, we are going to have to get better,” said Wissink. “Abbey Ufkes is running well and I think she’s going to have a great year and if I can get my next five or six girls to improve with her, then we will be fine.” Marshall is off to a good start, having won the Big Hill Invitational Aug. 26, marking the 15th straight year Marshall girls have won the event. The girls also won the Barney Roy Invitational in Marshall on Aug. 28. “I had my most dedicated group of girls this summer than I’ve had in six or seven years,” said Wissink, who noted that Hannah Delmotte put in over 300 miles this summer and Hannah Koch put in 350 miles of road work.

Cross-country team has some ground to make up Not a bad start for the Marshall High School boys cross-country team in 2014. The team won the Big Hill Invitational in Three Rivers on Aug. 25 and finished second at the Barney Roy Invitational in Marshall. Yes, the season is young, and coach Mary Hovarter expects things to get better as the season progresses. “This is a younger team than last year and the team isn’t quite where they were at the same point last season,” said Hovarter. Marshall will led by 2013 state qualifier Kurt Swaton.
