In The News: Albion trying to get the word out on Sinking Fund Millage About 40 people turned out July 15 at the Albion District Library to learn about Albion Public Schools’ attempt to pass a Sinking Fund millage that goes before voters on Aug. 5. Last year a similar measure failed, but community leaders are hopeful that meetings such as last week’s will help get the word out. A Sinking Fund is a special building and repair and renovation fund from which "big ticket" building repairs, upgrades and renovations can be paid. These funds are kept separate from other funds utilized by the school district for other purposes because state law requires it. Voters will be asked Aug. 5 to approve the Sinking Fund which would be 4 mills a year for five years. A mill represents $1 for every $1,000 of taxable value on a property. The taxable value is usually considered to be about 50 percent of a home’s market value. For example, a home with a market value of $60,000 would have a taxable value of $30,000, meaning that that homeowner would pay $120 for the Sinking Fund each year for five years. I don’t want anyone to have a death sentence hanging over their heads.” Sullivan is an eightyear survivor of breast cancer. See story on page 24

Word on the Street What would you do if you knew you could not fail? Editor’s Corner by John Hendler When people used to hear about “Albion schools” the first thought that used to come to many minds had to do with low test scores, declining enrollment and dilapidated buildings. Well, the times, they are a changing. Students’ test scores are on the rise as is student enrollment, as Albion strives to make its mark as one of the best K-8 districts in Michigan, if not the country. An important of this puzzle is the Sinking Fund Millage which Albion citizens will have a chance to approve on Aug. 5. The Albion Opportunity School, formerly known as Albion High School, is in dire need of essential repairs. When it rains, staff are forced to deploy numerous 80-gallon containers to catch the rainfall leaking in. The moisture in the building has led to swarms of gnats and the presence of mold. Other top needs include a new pool liner or the pool will be forced to close; a new fire protection system just to bring the building up to code; new windows to literally keep the elements out; and a new boiler and HVAC system, which has been in use for nearly 50 years. At a meeting last week in Albion on the Sinking Fund Millage, supporters talked about Albion finding its niche with its STEM and robotics programs and attracting students back to the district. I may sound a bit dramatic, but after hearing the passion from those supporters, Albion students truly are on the path to doing great things. Who knows what kind of impact the students’ performance will have down the road on other children as they go through their academic careers and see the bar being raised? Schools, as is oftentimes the case, bring the community together in a way that no other entity can, whether at a sporting event, a science fair or an academic ceremony. Schools are the lifeblood of the community. Fewer students today will mean that fewer adults in the future will stay or come back to Albion and call it home and raise a family of their own, impacting the city’s ability to thrive. Conversely, more students returning to Albion increase the likelihood that the community can secure a successful future, a future long overdue for Albion. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Thank you AGLP leaders, participants for positive experience To the Editor: As you can imagine, prior to sending our daughter on a trip to Alaska with many persons we did not know; we did a little community research. The Alaska Great Lakes Project has been a Marshall tradition. As we first moved into the community in 1994, we attended pancake break-

fasts and car washes for the various AGLP fundraising events. Who would have known this year our daughter had the opportunity to also be a part of the tradition. In this 2014 trip, we monitored the AGLP events on the AGLP website, Facebook and Instagram outlets and were thrilled to somehow be a part of the adventures and

learning opportunities. As she returned home from the 25th year of the AGLP – we found out what the trip meant to her and what a wonderful time she had with her AGLP family. A sincere thanks to Dale Rosene for his efforts these 25 years. For the chaperones and junior leaders this year and past years – thank you.

For the communities and people of Alaska that welcomed AGLP, thank you too. Thank you for the positive AGLP experience for our daughter and for all the work it takes to coordinate and bring this together for 25 years. Jeff and Joanna Johnson, Marshall

Marshall ‘Welcome to My Garden’ Tour a success To the Editor: Last weekend, July 12 and 13, the Marshall Area Garden Club held our annual “Welcome to My Garden” tour, and once again, it was a great weekend. The gardens were amazing, each one beautiful and different, and we can’t thank the garden owners enough for their hard work and generous willingness to share their gardens. The volunteers who worked the tour, the committee members who helped organize and run the event, and the city joined together to make it a great weekend.

Thanks to all who were involved. We are delighted to provide another event to share Marshall’s beauty and hospitality with visitors. From the guest book that many visitors signed, it is clear that we get hundreds of out-oftown folks in for this event. It is worth mentioning as well that the proceeds from the Garden Tour go toward making our city a more beautiful place. As you admire the plantings around Fountain Circle, the west end gardens and Carver Park, just to name a few, think of the Garden Club. And, if you missed it

this year, plan on attending next year as we celebrate our 25th tour – again, your ticket purchase helps us keep the city of Marshall beautiful. Go to www.marshallareagardenclub.org for more information. Thanks for supporting the Marshall Area Garden Club, and we welcome new members. Marshall - it’s your marathon, put yourself on the map To the Editor: We are gearing up for the 4th annual Baker’s Dozen Beer Run on Sept. 20, a half marathon through the streets of Marshall. It was our desire when we first organized this event to celebrate the place that we all were born and raised in by highlighting some of the small businesses and providing citizens with a good, cheap time for the heck (or health-your pick) of it. Now, as the event has expanded and

required us to limit participants at 1,500 (so get registering if you want a spot), our focus has also expanded. Our new goal this year is to liven up the course. We want to involve as much of Marshall as we possibly can. So, here is our challenge to you - if you live on the course, we would like your help in making the trek of 13.1 miles as tolerable as possible for the runners and bikers who have committed themselves to it. Music, sprinklers,

silly signs, squirt guns, costumes-use your imagination, people. Check out the course route (and also register to run, bike, or sign up to volunteer) at bakersdozenbeerrun.com. This is your half marathon, Marshall. Put yourself on the map. Your Marshall Beer Run team, Jessica Hackworth Dawn Zaki David and Stacy Giesen

Former Marshall High School football coach Rich Hulkow talks to participants at the start of the 2014 ‘I’ve Got Your Backs’ football camp July 17 at the MHS Football Field. The I’ve Got Your Back Foundation’s (www.ivegotyourbacks.org) mission is to take care of families, friends and neighbors who need help and was established in memory of Isaac Loughrige, who died from H1N1 in 2009. Sheriff Saxton’s 6S Open to held Aug. 8 The Calhoun County Office of the Sheriff is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Sheriff Saxton’s 6S (Success) Open. The open will be held on Friday Aug. 8 at Riverside Golf Club in Battle Creek. The 6S Open is based on Sheriff Matt Saxton’s six points for student success: STUDY (promoting the importance of study habits and education) SMART (encouraging smart choices among our youth) STRONG (developing strong character traits, values and morals) SECURE (protecting our schools and communities from violence) SAFE (teaching safe behavior in personal choices and in recreation) STRIVE (Be the best you can be) Sheriff Saxton’s golf

open supports the 6S program. This teaching, educating and mentoring program is a school- based, law related education program taught by trained Sheriff Deputies. In addition to promoting success, the program provides an understanding of the law, consequences for unlawful and risk taking behavior. It offers age appropriate instruction related to gangs, violence, substance abuse, truancy, weapon possession and traffic safety. Additional focal points of 6S include hunter, boater, and ATV safety. Sheriff Saxton and Undersheriff Hurtt have also began a new program in the Calhoun County area schools with all 4th graders to initiate an early impact on their success and life path. Funding for this pro-

gram is solely based on the profits raised at the annual golf open. Your participation and support is critical in helping the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office continue their valuable work with the youth in our community. Sheriff Matt Saxton, Undersheriff Tim Hurtt, Chief Deputy Jim McDonagh and 6S coordinators Deputy Jeff Edwards and Deputy Jessica Hazel invite you to participate in the golf open Aug. 8. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The four person scramble is $75 a person and includes 18 holes of golf, breakfast, lunch, dinner, door prizes, raffle drawings and awards. Last year’s event sold out and we are hoping for the same in 2014. You may pre- register by sending your name, ad-

dress, phone number, who you will be playing with, along with a check made payable to Calhoun County. Thank you very much for your participation. Please mail to: Sheriff Saxton’s 6S Open 161 E. Michigan Ave. Battle Creek, MI 49014 For questions, please call 269-969-6362 or 269781-0880.

Allen Harmon Insurance Agency and Auto-Owners Insurance team up with the Battle Creek Bombers By KRISTEN SHARPLEY

The Boys of Summer are Back! It's summer time which means baseball season. Tonight, Saturday, July 19 at CO Brown Stadium, the Battle Creek Bombers will not only be playing the game we all love, but have partnered with Allen Harmon Insurance Agency and Auto-Owners Insurance for a very special night. What makes this event so different than the others? Before the Bombers were created, they were almost called “The Cereal City Krunch. For this night only, they will be wearing special limited edition jerseys, which will be auctioned off during the game. The proceeds will be going to the Williams Syndrome Association, which is very dear to Allen Harmon Insurance Agency. The owner's daughter, Callie Harmon, has this cardiovascular disease which affects speech and physical development. Something that this disease does not affect is their love for life, especially music. Callie will be singing the National Anthem before the game. You won't want to miss that.

But wait, there's more. Allen Harmon Insurance Agency is proud to introduce the addition of new agent and long time area baseball coach/player, Tom Sharpley, to their staff. He will be throwing out the ceremonial first pitch at the game. In doing so, this commemorates a new beginning (big inning) for him in the insurance business. To symbolize that he has moved on to "greener pastures," the first 1,000 people will receive a cow bell (make some noise) at the gate. Following the game, there will be a beautiful display of fireworks. Now that the bases are covered, we hope to see everyone come out to CO Brown Stadium, located on 1392 Capital Ave NE, in Battle Creek tonight, Saturday, July 19, at 7:05 p.m.. Gates open at 6:05 p.m. To celebrate Tom's many years in the insurance industry and involvement in baseball, he has made arrangements for complementary tickets. Call the Allen Harmon Insurance Agency office at 269-441-5156 for more information. Play ball!
