Word on the Street What’s your favorite part about MHS Homecoming? Editor’s Corner
Marshall High School will conclude its Homecoming Week tonight (Oct. 4) with the Homecoming Dance. Friday night was the annual Homecoming football game where the Homecoming Court was honored at half time. Last week, students were involved in various activities and dress up days for the annual event.
by John Hendler Some of the familiar names of Marshall’s football past - Rich Hulkow, Paul Herman and Bob Vaught have teamed up and organized a Marshall squad of alumni players that will face off against Olivet High School alumni tonight, Saturday, Oct. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at Olivet High School. I spoke with Hulkow on Thursday, and he said it’s been a lot of fun for him to see many of his former players at the practices and he’s looking forward to the game. “Some of these guys are still very talented,” said Hulkow. “These guys just want to play one more game of tackle football.” The game was organized through alumnifootballusa.com and Olivet was originally going to play DeltonKellogg, but when Delton backed out, Herman said the effort to get a Marshall team together got underway. “We retired coaches...we love football,” said Herman, whose two sons are expected to take part. “It’s really cool for the alumni.” Hulkow said at practice, the guys just seemed to quickly pick up the old plays. “When we put the plays in, you could see the light bulbs go off in these guys’ heads,” he said. High School rules will apply, with 12-minute quarters but a timeout will be called every four minutes. Only the four down linemen can rush the quarterback. “I’m really out there for organization and to make sure nobody gets hurt,” said Hulkow. It should be a fun night. When my friends and I were in high school and our early years of college, we used to play a tackle football game each Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s Day. We called our “league” the Holiday Football League or HFL. Unlike what you’ll see on Saturday night in Olivet, we played without pads or helmets and it was just the 10 of us, playing five on five. There we were, the Sun Goggles and the Gate Blazers facing off on our high school field. Our nicknames hardly instilled fear in each other - my name was Joaquin and there were guys by the names of Fud, Turbo, Danish, Conehead, Seve, Franco, Baboo, Hairdu and a guy too cool for a nickname who just wanted to be called Sandy. (By the way, our name for him was the Village Idiot.) Our most memorable game was the 1984 Thanksgiving classic played in a driving rainstorm. We played well past sunset, when unable to see and caked in mud, we decided to end it as a 39-39 tie. In all, there were 15 games between 1981 and 1985. We’ve talked about having one more tackle game one of these days, but as the years pass, that dream becomes more distant. But, when we do get together from time to time, just talking about our football “careers” takes us right back to that rain-soaked, muddy field 30 Thanksgivings ago. Priceless. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

"Dressing up in pajamas was my favorite favorite day (Monday) because you usually don’t get to do that at school. It was fun.”
"My favorite part was the competition between the grades and then on Friday, we all get to come back together as a school.”
"I really like the dressing up days. My favorite was throwback Tuesday because we could go all out and dress up as fun as we wanted.”
Letters Marshall Alternative/Opportunity School gives back To the Editor: Have you ever been to a park and thought, “Someone should clean up a little?” Well, students at Marshall Alterative High School in the TOS program thought just that. So we did something. You are probably wondering what is TOS? The Opportunity School is a pro-
gram at Marshall Alternative High School which allows students to have a chance to not only take college classes but to be an active member in the community. On Sept. 19, some young adults in The Opportunity School were with Cheryl Vosburg, environmental program coordinator with the city of Marshall, and
Mitch Robbins, a park volunteer. They took action in Marshall’s very own Ketchum Park, painting benches, planting native Michigan species and getting rid of some pesky invasive plants and some dead trees. All of the helpers had lot of fun and also got tons done. Why does TOS volunteer each month? The young
adults in TOS like to think of it as repaying the community for all they have done for them, such as helping pay for books, classes and resources. We at MAHS/TOS would like to thank the community for giving so much. Alexa Blair, MAHS student
Kari Schuerig would be a breath of fresh air for council To the Editor: It is my privilege to be able to endorse Kari Schuerig for Marshall City Council. She is one of the most vivacious personalities I have met in quite some time. Her zest for life is contagious and she draws people to her by
her welcoming smile and warm handshake. If you want a job done and done right, ask Kari. I think she would be a breath of fresh air and would bring fresh ideas to Marshall. She is a dedicated wife, mother and a true woman
of faith. She loves our city and is striving to have a voice on the council who will go above and beyond. Please consider voting for Kari; she truly cares. Pamela Gerten, Marshall
Joe Caron will serve community in dedicated fashion To the Editor: I am writing to encourage the election of Joe Caron to the Marshall City Council. Joe is an exceptional young man who has advanced his professional career by using his intellect, people skills, listening skills and his ability to think through issues to insure an overall positive result. Joe has impressed me with his knowledge of local issues and what he feels is important to help to keep Mar-
shall the wonderful community it is. I have known Joe since he was a preteen, when he would come to my parents’ home and take care of odd jobs for them. I’ll always remember how impressed my parents, Bob and Beryl Kempf, were with Joe and his ability to “follow through” at such a young age. He has done nothing but improve that skill set as he has grown to age in our community. As I see the leadership in our local
community change with the next generation of leaders now starting to “step up to the plate” and dedicate themselves to Marshall for the long term, I am encouraged. Joe is a leader in that generation and will serve our community in a dedicated fashion. Please join me in voting for Joe Caron for City Council. Craig K. Kempf, Marshall

“I’ve always loved to golf. But as my heart condition got worse, I couldn’t do much of anything anymore. Even walking across the room left me feeling tired and out of breath. Fortunately for me, the doctors at Bronson helped change all that. They told me about a new heart surgery called TAVR that could actually give me my life back. And that’s exactly what happened. Within days of my surgery at Bronson Methodist Hospital, I could walk without feeling out of breath, and I wasn’t tired anymore. My nurses, they were great, too. They talked to me, listened to me, even gave me pudding and popsicles in the middle of the night. Better yet, I’m back doing all the things I did before my heart condition: mowing the lawn, going to the gym and playing golf with the guys — terrible as ever.” Roy Kidney, Battle Creek, Michigan, September 17, 2014

Replacing Pain with a Smile Krista Bierbaum is always on the move. She’s a mom and a school counselor. A woman with determination and pride. So it was important for her to get back on her feet as soon as possible after her hip replacement surgery. After four days in the hospital, Krista immediately started physical therapy at Oaklawn Life improvement Center. The Physical Therapy team worked diligently to get Krista back doing her normal daily activities. “I had a great experience from top to bottom at Oaklawn. Now, I can walk without pain.” Krista’s surgery was June 17. Today, she has no restrictions on her activity.

From left: Marshall High School varsity volleyball players Emily Delmotte, Nicole Tucker and Gracen Corcoran versus Lumen Christi on Oct. 1. Marshall defeated Lumen tonight in four sets, 25-9, 27-29, 25-15, 25-20 to improve its season record to 22-8-1 and 4-0 in the Interstate 8 Athletic Conference. Among the highlights: Emily Delmotte, 16 kills, four blocks; Logan Kiessling, 13 kills, 15 digs; Kaylie Bates: 45 assists, 14 digs, four blocks; and Brooke Mason, 23 digs."I was happy with our start,” said coach John Miller. “Then we starting playing a little lazier in set two and it showed. I was happy with our effort again in sets three and four. Lumen is a good team and kept coming after us. That was a critical match for us to put us where we want to be in conference. We just need to get healthy. We are down to nine healthy players. So if someone is not playing well, we are limited on substitutions." Marshall’s next match is at Charlotte Oct. 8.

Marshall girls CC wins Otsego Inv. again The Marshall High School girls cross-country team won the Otsego Invitational for the seventh consecutive year and won its third invitational this season. “It was a nice win for the team, but once again not everyone ran as well as expected,” said coach Steve Wissink. “Abbey Ufkes and Asha Ritchie ran season best times, but I expected more people to do so. I'm extremely pleased with how hard the girls are working in practice, and we're confident our times will drop as the season winds down. Our JV runners did an awesome job as we took the first four places and seven of the top nine.”

Boys cross-country places second at Otsego The Marshall Men's Cross Country Team finished second, at the Otsego Invitational Sept. 27, just being edged out by Bangor. Leading the team and placing second was senior, Kurt Swaton in a season best time of 16:44. He was followed by teammates Jannis Wolff, 6th in a personal best time of17:35; Chris Bell, 9th in a personal best time 17:46; Chandler Cruz, 14th in his best time of the season, 18:12, and Calvin Smith, 19th in 18:21. All five scorers were able to earn medals in the varsity race. "I was happy with the boys' results, not because they brought home a trophy, but because they each raced
well,” said coach Mary Hovarter. “I was able to see them out there trying to beat other teams which has been something we have been working toward all season. And (at Otsego) we saw results.” In the junior varsity race, Hovarter said Marshall had an excellent showing as well. Leading the Marshall JV team and winning the race was Christian Kalisz, in a time of 18:42 followed by Eli Solis, who was 2nd in a time of 19:36. "Many personal best times were set today,” said Hovarter. “It was great to see the guys come alive and to see all of their hard work starting to pay off.”
