Technology is not about keeping up with other hospitals. It’s about keeping up with folks like Krista. Krista Bierbaum is always on the move. She’s a mom and a school counselor. She attends Pilates twice a week. She’s a fighter. A woman with determination and pride. A woman in pain. She’s had hip pain for as long as she can remember. After months of physical therapy and numerous interventions to provide pain relief, Krista’s condition was worsening. She finally had enough. She wanted her life back. That’s when her surgeon immediately diagnosed her condition and scheduled her for hip replacement surgery 9 days later. “The first thing I remember when I woke from surgery was seeing the beautiful flowers from my doctor. Everything went so smoothly. I had my own private room and I never had to wait for anything. All those things matter. ” After four days in the hospital, Krista immediately started physical therapy at Oaklawn Life improvement Center. The Physical Therapy team worked diligently to get Krista back doing her normal daily activities. Krista’s surgery was June 17. Today, she has no restrictions on her activity. “I had a great experience from top to bottom at Oaklawn. Now, I can walk without pain.” And that she did. Krista eagerly went back to work in August, pain free, as a Counselor at Pennfield Elementary School. To learn more about Oaklawn at it’s services, visit oaklawnhospital.org or call 888-Oaklawn.

MHS varsity football just comes up short Redhawks stopped just short of the goal line in 26-21 loss at Milan

Tyler Horn’s fourth-quarter touchdown run gave Marshall a 21-20 lead with just over three minutes to play. In a wild fourth quarter that saw three touchdowns in the final four minutes, the Marshall High School varsity football team came up just short in a 26-21 loss at Milan on Aug. 28. Overall we played a tough game,” said coach Jim Hendershot. “We let one get away.” After Milan went ahead 20-14 with just over four minutes to play, Marshall went ahead 21-20 following a touchdown run by Tyler Horn less than a minute later. Milan stormed back to take the lead 26-21 with 1:36 to play. Marshall was able to get down field quickly covering
about 60 yards in just over a minute. But the drive stalled inside the 10-yard-line as time ran out. Horn gained 108 yards on the ground and scored two touchdowns. Quarterback Alex Walton scored Marshall’s other touchdown and gained 42 yards rushing and was 7 of 14 passing for 76 yards. Forrest Jackson gained 86 yards rushing while Brandon Turner had three receptions for 44 yards. Marshall played at Coldwater Friday night and will host its first home game Sept. 12 versus Parma Western at 7 p.m.
Alex Walton’s third quarter touchdown tied the game at 14-14.
Chris Upright carries the ball upfield in the third quarter.
Forrest Jackson gained 86 yards rushing versus MIlan Aug. 28.

Word on the Street What are you looking forward to for the 2014-2015 school year?
Editor’s Corner
Sept. 2 marked the first day of school for students in Marshall and throughout Michigan and the ad-visor&chronicle asked these 7th graders from Marshall Middle School what they are looking forward to this school year?
by John Hendler A while back I was talking to my friend who lives down in Miami and I was telling him about Marshall’s Historic Home Tour and how it’s one of the biggest events of the year in our little town. “You mean, people, strangers, just walk through your home?” he asked. “Sounds like they should call it Marshall’s Home Invasion.” This is the same person, who, when visiting our Mayberry-esque town (his words) a few years back commented on how cool and retro Marshall looks and that he’d love to live in a place like this where people call you by name on the street instead of calling you a name and where kids here seem to have a multitude of opportunities to participate in sports and in the arts. The high school I attended had more students than all the students that attend Marshall Public Schools, Mar Lee School and Marshall Academy combined. Here, high school students can not only participate in any sport, they can choose two if they like, whereas at my high school, there were usually double the number trying out for a sport than what was needed to fill a roster for every sport, including water polo. Yes, my high school had a water polo team. Hey, they were state champs in 1982! Anyway, as many visitors can attest, we live in a great town and there’s nothing like Home Invasion, I mean Home Tour weekend to show off all that Marshall has to offer. After a warm week, the weekend looks fabulous as temperatures cool off just a bit to make it feel like early fall. Perfect weather for a perfect town. Thursday marks 13 years to the day since the 9/11 attacks against the World Trade Center towers in New York and the Pentagon and those brave souls onboard United Flight 93 which crashed near Shanksville, Pa. Although not as big a milestone as the 10th anniversary, mention of the 13th anniversary will certainly be newsworthy around the country, even in places thousands of miles from New York, especially with what’s been happening in Iraq and Syria with ISIS. I was living in Italy in 2001 and I had just returned home just before 3 p.m. (9 a.m. east coast time) on that Tuesday, Sept. 11 after picking up my son and daughter from school when I received a phone call from my friend Walsh, in Missouri, telling me that a plane had hit one of the towers and to turn on Good Morning America (thanks to the American Forces Network-Europe). It was that uncertainty, that not knowing, that shook us as a nation and allowed us to experience 9/11 collectively as a nation, even though we were hundreds, if not thousands of miles away from Ground Zero. Sadly, what we experience collectively as a nation is more often than not, a devastating tragedy. Perhaps that’s why after the 9/11 attacks, we as a nation came together and showed real concern for one another. Unfortunately, that goodwill seems to have dissipated more and more as we get further away from 9/11. I hope it won’t have to be another tragedy that brings us together as a nation. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Letters Groups attempting to end inhumanity of negligence To the Editor: The Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act just voted on by our elected representatives isn’t a scientific issue as the gun control lobby, aligned with the NRA, want us all to think through fear tactics and false “big bad wolf” stories. It’s a control mechanism put on the citizens of Michigan so as not to take away gun rights. Well, gun control
hasn’t happened yet even after scores of innocent children are killed by gun toters every year. Do you really think the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has the same kind of funding clout as do the NRA and powerful gun industry lobbyists? What a ridiculous argument. I tell you one
thing, the animal groups are out there attempting to end the inhumanity of negligence, cruelty and suffering. That is their premise. This is a senseless, inhumane hunt. Let’s just see if this next wolf hunt will include the steel jaw leghold traps, snares, and maybe even the hunting dogs? I call this unethical slaughter for furs and trophy heads. What a sham.
Citizens beware: By approving the “Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act” our elected officials have attacked our citizen referendum process which is guaranteed by the Michigan constitution. What issue will be next? We’ve been snared by fear and as a result democracy is slowly eroding. Kay Doyle, Bellevue
Columns Law that helps people...horns and other car noises By GEORGE M. STRANDER Ingram County Court Administrator and Probate Register
Fifth in a series. Although in some contexts the use of a car horn can be an irritant, there are good reasons for equipping our automobiles with such sound-making devices. First and foremost, horns can act as a way to alert other people and drivers of the car’s location or movement. They can also be used for other types of communication. Not surprisingly, the law not just allows for a type of horn on automobiles, it also requires it. Other sound-making devices, however, are tightly regulated and in some cases prohibited.
C a r h or n s : Under Michigan’s Motor Vehicle Code (MVC), all automobiles must be equipped with ‘a horn in good working order capable of emitting a sound audible under normal conditions from a distance of not less than 200 feet. As a point of reference, most city blocks are well in excess of 200 feet long. Your car horn has to be heard from a certain distance, but “a horn or other warning device shall not emit an unreasonably loud or harsh sound or a whistle.” Again, as a point of reference, standard car horns emit sounds of around 100 decibels loud. State law also requires a motorist to give audible warning to others through the use his or her horn “when reasonably necessary to insure safe operation.” Otherwise, state law prohibits the use of a horn. Sir en s, wh ist les, b e lls: Non-emergency vehicles may not be installed
with sirens, whistles, bells or air horns, and motorists may not use these sound-making devices. Authorized emergency vehicles, however, can be equipped with these devices, and the audible range of the sounds emitted may be in excess of 500 feet. According to the MVC, use of sirens and other emergency sounds is limited to situations where the vehicle is “operated in response to an emergency call or in the immediate pursuit of an actual or suspected violator of the law.” The standard ambulance siren might register at 120 decibels. One exception to the above prohibition concerns historic vehicles. Such automobiles may be equipped with a siren, whistle, or bell, but these devices can only be used when the vehicle is participating in a parade, exhibition, tour or similar event.
