In The News: Hon. James C. Kingsley’s 32-year career honored

When Michigan’s 37th Circuit Court opens for business in 2015, it will be minus one long-term, point player: the Hon. James C. Kingsley. Kingsley, a Union City High School alumnus who went on to attend Albion College and law school at Northwestern University, will retire at the end of 2014. He has presided over a myriad of civil, criminal and family law cases since being seated on the bench April 5, 1982. Those who have known Kingsley personally and professionally gathered at Schuler’s Restaurant in Marshall on Nov. 25 to celebrate a life and career that has been more about relationship-building than legacy-building, which, in itself, led to a legacy of compassion, fairness and consistency. What’s on your Christmas wish list? Editor’s Corner

With Black Friday and Cyber Monday having passed, the Christmas shopping season is now in full swing. These six Marshall High School band members were asked what they’re hoping for this Christmas. Parents, please note.

by John Hendler In my haste to get to my destination for Thanksgiving dinner (I was naturally starving), I got pulled over by the Michigan State Police for (full disclosure here) exceeding the speed limit by 8 mph. After I pulled over, I thought about reaching into the glove compartment to get the registration and proof of insurance as well as reaching into my back pocket to get my license. But, I decided to wait until I was approached by the trooper because the last thing I wanted him to see was me making movements in my car and giving him something else to wonder about what kind of person this Thanksgiving speed demon was. So, I kept my hands on the wheel and when approached by the trooper, did what he told me to do. Yes, we were both equals on a human level, but he was the person of authority and was the authority in this situation. Thankfully, he let me go with a warning and wished me to have a happy holiday. As I proceeded to my destination, driving slightly under the speed limit for good measure, I thought of the situation in Ferguson, Mo. concerning Michael Brown, police officer Darren Wilson and the grand jury’s decision not to indict Wilson after he killed Brown last summer. The evidence determined Wilson was punched by Brown (who moments earlier had stolen cigars at a convenience store and pushed the store owner out of the way as he left). They struggled for Wilson's gun. If the Wilson had lost his gun in that struggle, is there a chance that it could have been used on him? I’m not a gambling man, but I have a feeling that if I punched the trooper and reached for his gun, the odds of my getting shot, I believe, would be at least 50/50. The idea that Brown was killed only for stealing cigars is absurd, but if one were to land from Mars and watch the news networks cover the whole ordeal from the start, they would probably think that police officers in America will kill another human for no reason other than the color of his skin. This person would also think that Brown was an innocent victim, having been absolved of having any responsibility for causing the situation. One question I think the media felt wasn’t politically correct to ask of Brown’s parents: Why did your son think it was okay to steal, assault the store owner, punch a cop and go for his gun? Is there ever a circumstance when it’s good to go for the officer’s gun? Do problems exist between police and minorities in some communities? Of course, and those need to be addressed so tragic situations like the one in New York City involving the death of Eric Garner don’t get repeated. But, in a vast majority of cases, police officers do a great job in helping communities come together for good while they put their lives on the line every day. I know it can be a thankless job, so as the trooper and I wound down our interaction, I thanked him for doing what he does every day. Until next week, may the good news be yours.

Letters Watching our youth thrive on Nutcracker stage To the Editor: We moved to Marshall last year and our girls have been blessed to be part of the youth productions at the Franke Center for the Arts and the most recent Nutcracker performance produced by the Marshall Community Ballet Foundation. Attending these pro-

ductions, we were amazed at the youth talent in Marshall and surrounding communities. These children/young adults are confident, dedicated, enthusiastic and talented. In addition, there are countless adults that volunteer in numerous ways to help the children put on the

plays. If you have an evening free, check out the local youth productions (i.e., Franke Center, local high schools) or make sure you watch the next Nutcracker performance in 2016. These children/young adults are extremely talented and work hard to pro-

duce a high quality and entertaining production. You will be amazed at the local talent and it will surely be a delightful evening watching our youth thrive on stage. Joanne Davis, Marshall Township

Columns Lest we forget...Pearl Harbor, a day of infamy By MERLIN SHAVER Member of VFW Post 4073

On Dec. 7, 1941, a Sunday at 7:20 a.m., two Army privates in an isolated mobile radar station in Waialua spotted a lone aircraft. They had no way of knowing it was a Japanese seaplane. Soon their screen was filled with images. They reported the images to an Army lieutenant who assumed it was a formation of B17s due to arrive that day from the mainland. “Don’t worry about it,” he told them. An hour and 40 minutes later the first 360 aircraft, a group of 49 bombers carrying 1,000 pound armor placing bombs, also 40 torpedobombers each carrying a 500 pound bomb. Ten-thousand feet below Oahu

came in sight and the Aircraft were grouped in the center of the field making them an easy target. The time was 7:55 a.m. The dive-bomber swarmed across Ford Island dropping their bombs on aircraft and hangers below. The torpedo bombers flying at 100 feet above the waters of Pearl Harbor aiming for their targets of a row of battle ships. The Harbor rocked with explosions and dense smoke filled the air. At Schofield Barracks, the fighters tore through the mountain pass and raked the compounds and drill fields with deadly fire. At Hickman Field, near Pearl Harbor, men leaped for cover as bombs tore through buildings and rows of aircraft neatly lined up. Men were swimming in the water trying to escape, burning oil covered the water, the air was heavy and hard to breathe, gunfire mingled with the sounds of screams and curses. The Arizona went down with 1,100

men trapped below, the Oklahoma sank with over 400 men, the Utah lies where she sank, the Pennsylvania was repaired and fought again, the Oglala sank and was salvaged. Ninety-two Navy aircrafts were destroyed and 30 were damaged. The Air Corps lost 96 planes and 128 damaged. The Navy lost 2,018 killed and 710 wounded; the Army lost 218 and 364 wounded; the Marines lost 109 and 94 wounded. Counting local people the lost was 2,403 and 1,178 wounded. President Roosevelt announced the morning the Japanese planes attached Pearl Harbor would be “a date which will live in infamy.” On a personal note, how soon we forget, it seems that schools do not teach history, just ask people what happened on Dec. 7 and you will get a blank stare. “Let’s remember Pearl Harbor.” Also, I will be 91 year old on Dec. 7.

MHS girls varsity open with big win Konkle, Tucker each score 10 as Marshall beats Portage Central, 64-22 The Marshall High School girls varsity basketball team opened its 2014-15 season Dec. 2 with a commanding 64-22 home victory over Portage Central. “The girls played very hard and they played very well,” said coach Sal Konkle. “Once we got over some early jitters, the defense really stepped up.” Konkle added that with six sophomores and seven players overall playing in their first varsity contest, there were bound to be earlyy nerves.

Marshall led 18-9 after the first quarter and outscored Portage Central 46-13 the rest of the way. The Redhawks were led by Jill Konkle and Nikki Tucker, who each scored 10 points. Scoring eight points each were Cortazia Wilson, Logan Kiessling and Carlee Long. Chelsea Tobias had seven points while Chloe McAllister scored six points and Emily Delmotte scored five points. Georgianna Pratley rounded out the scoring with two points.
